Fed-up resident takes pro-active step to patch potholes By Xpress Reporter

The growing problem of potholes on a certain street in Ward 17, Stanger Manor, has prompted a selfless resident and businessman, Salim Tootla to take proactive steps to fill potholes on Geranium Street. On Friday, 11 March 2022 Salim Tootla together with the help of Valgo Brick and Block members filled potholes in Stanger Manor with broken blocks to minimize the threat posed by potholes. Speaking to Xpress Times, Tootla said his neighbourhood is more than just a community of people and potholes pose a great threat on the road, sometimes drivers swerve in front of oncoming traffic while attempting to avoid the potholes. “I'm fed up with the lack of action from the local government to repair the road. It has been for too long that we as residents have been side-lined and (ignored) yet the bulk of the income of the municipality comes from the rates and municipal charges that we pay as residents of Ward 17,” said Salim Tootla. According to Salim Tootla he has been asking the ward councillor to attend to the potholes on Geranium, without any positive outcome. In a letter sent to Ward 17 councillor earlier this year, Salim said he's prepared to mobilize community members to boycott paying for rates. “. As an influential businessman and resident in this town I'm appealing to you as Councillor to immediately engage with the civil department of the municipality and have the road repaired to what it should be within a week or else I will be

calling for a total rates boycott in the ward 17 area and believe you me the tide is changing we will have the majority support to bring your municipality to its

knees. As I speak we are busy with the ratepayers' body that will be representing the residents of Ward 17,” said Salim Tootla in a letter.

Manor Primary suspends two SGB members Corruption allegations resurface as department stalls probe By Xpress Reporter

Stanger Manor Primary School is once again immersed in serious allegations of corruption and malfeasance as the KZN Department of Education dilly-

dallies in its investigation into the school. Xpress Times has learnt that two members of the recently elected School Governing Body (SGB) have been served with letters of suspension. A source at the school has alleged that the suspension comes after some members of the SGB tried to prevent the school

from paying out a huge settlement amount to retrenched SGB-paid educators who took the school to the Commission for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA). It has emerged that several SGBpaid educators were retrenched by the school during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, due to lack of funds. The source revealed that three of the affected educators took the matter up with the CCMA, with the result that the school was forced to pay a settlement amount of R114 000. “The SGB realized that this was wrong and (it) tried to save parents money from being spent. (They) then called in the (affected educators) and negotiated reemployment without paying the compensation imposed by the CCMA. Two of the three (educators) agreed and (the school) would have saved R71 000.00 of parents' money,” a source revealed. The source further alleged that the suspension of the two SGB members came as a result of this process, as the school was apparently “unwilling” to reemploy the educators in question. The new SGB was elected in December 2021, after the first attempt to elect the SGB in May 2021, came to nought as the election was nullified, amid claims of irregularities. A member of the SGB who spoke on condition of absolute

anonymity said in its three months involved with the school. KwaDukuza Child Welfare to commemorate Project L3 By Xpress Reporter

PARADE: Senior Social Work Manager Karnagie Govender

KwaDukuza Child Welfare Society is resuming with its public awareness campaigns, starting with the Project L3 Street Parade, scheduled for Friday the 18th of March 2022. Project L3 (Live, Love, Learn) was initiated by the Society a few years ago as a direct response to the growing scourge of child abuse and neglect. Senior Social Work Manager Karnagie Govender says he project serves a dual purpose for the Society, as it raises awareness, and also provides a fundraising

opportunity. Funding is essential to allow the Society to continue rendering services to children that have been abused and/or neglected. “The Project is commemorated every year on the Friday preceding Human Rights Day. It is very important as a child protection organization, to have programmes that focus on prevention and early intervention. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the past two years we have been unable to have many awareness programmes. However due to the easing of restrictions in Alert

Level 01, we would like to resume our programmes,” Govender stated. The Street Parade will take place in the KwaDukuza CBD, between 9am and 12 noon. It will start and end at the KwaDukuza People's Park, adjacent KwaDukuza Clinic, on Theunissen Road. The initiative will involve schools, business houses and various organizations from the surrounding areas. “We are encouraging all participants to wear green, in support of the Project. Strict

Covid-19 protocols will be adhered to at all times during the parade. This includes mandatory mask wearing and sanitizing to ensure that we are compliant,” said Govender. Participants can visit KwaDukuza Child Welfare Society to acquire green-coloured items, including, inter alia, badges, wrist bands, sun glasses, BPA-free bottles, adult / kids tshirts and caps. For more information, KwaDukuza Child Welfare Society can be contacted on (032) 551-2129.

Minister extends National State of Disaster

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Minister Nkosazana DlaminiZuma has extended the National State of Disaster to 15 April 2022. The extension was published on the government gazette yesterday (Tuesday), the day on which the extension made on 15 March 2022 was supposed to come to an end. Government said this latest extension had been made “taking into account the need to continue augmenting the existing legislation and contingency arrangements undertaken by organs of state to address the impact of the disaster”. The extension flies in the face of mounting calls for the scrapping of State of Disaster, amid continuously declining Covid-19 infections. President Cyril Ramaphosa had earlier indicated that government was considering alternative legislative instruments to manage the Covid-19 pandemic going forward, in case the decision was made to scrap the National State of Disaster. In the latest 24-hour reporting cycle, 671 new infections were recorded nationally, with zero deaths reported.

Ilembe faces scourge of teenage pregnancy

Girls as young as 10-yearsold give birth By Xpress Reporter

Girls as young as 10-years-old are falling pregnant and giving birth in iLembe District. This shocking revelation was made by an official from the iLembe Health District Office, recently. Speaking at an event to fight teenage pregnancy which was held at Maphumulo Town Hall, Ms Zamantungwa Khumalo, the district coordinator for Mother Child Health, said there was a high prevalence of young girls between the ages of 10 and 19 that give birth in the various health facilities. According to the official statistics presented by Khumalo at the event:

• April and June 2021; Deliveries in 10 to 19 years in facility rate was at 17.9 with 3, 318 babies delivered. 26 of those were delivered by mothers aged 10 to 14 years and 568 were delivered by mothers aged 15 to 19 years. • July and September 2021; deliveries in 10 to 19 years in facility rate was at 16.7 with 3, 078 babies delivered. Eight were delivered by mothers aged 10 to 14 years and 505 were delivered by mothers aged 15 to 19 years. • October to December 2021: The delivery rate was at 18.6 with 2, 862 babies delivered. 19 babies were delivered by mothers aged 10 to 14 years and 513 by mothers aged 15 to 19 years. “These numbers do not include

the number of teenagers who opted for Choice of Termination of Pregnancy (CTOP), those who had miscarriages and those who delivered at home,” said Khumalo. KwaZulu-Natal Health Department MEC Ms Nomagugu Simelane has made a call to all stakeholders to take the matter of teenage pregnancy seriously as the consequences of such may be dire including school drop-out leading to uneducated and unemployed youth, an increase in HIV/Aids and other STI's as well as babies with stunted growth. Aptly titled She Conquers Teenage Pregnancy Stakeholders and Community Imbizo, the meeting was attended by officials from the departments of Education, Social Development, Agriculture, COGTA, Community Safety and liaison and KZNEDTEA (Liquor authority) as well as non-profits such as South African National Institute for Crime Prevention and the Reintegration of Offenders (Nicro), Love Life, Soul City and other relevant stakeholders. She Conquers is a provincial integrated strategy that aims to seek a stronger collaboration through shared vision and ownership and will be carried out in all 11 districts starting with those with the highest teenage delivery rates.

World Social Work Day 2022

World Social Work Day is observed every year on the third Tuesday in March. The day recognizes the hard work and diligence of social workers. On this day, a global organization of social workers advocates for social justice, human rights, and social development while promoting the best practices in social work. Social workers serve many roles in our communities. They assess their client's and community's needs and challenges. As advocates, they speak for their clients, get them access to the resources they need to improve their lives, and educate people about what to do in a crisis. The theme: ´Co-building a New Eco-Social World: Leaving No One Behind´ coincides with the theme of the People´s Summit, of which the Alliance is a partner, which will take place on the 29th June to the 2nd July. The theme presents a vision and action plan to create new global values, policies and practices that develop trust, security and confidence for all people and the sustainability of the planet. World Social Work Day 2022 will be a highlight opportunity for the social work profession to engage all social work networks and the community they work within to make contributions to the values and principles which enable all people to have their dignity respected through shared futures.

“Unvaccinated people pose health risk,” says government By Xpress Reporter

Government has reiterated its warning over vaccine hesitancy, stating that unvaccinated people continued to pose a serious health risk, both to themselves and those close to them. This emerged from a Cabinet meeting held last week, in which Cabinet took decisions

on a wide range of matters affecting South Africa and her people. Cabinet said in its post-meeting statement that while it noted the country's efforts to fight the pandemic, it however warned that the battle was not yet over. “Cabinet is pleased that almost 32 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered and that over 42 percent of our adult population is fully vaccinated. However, unvaccinated people still remain unprotected against

COVID-19 and pose a health risk to themselves and those around them. Vaccination remains the best way to fight COVID-19, and Cabinet calls on everyone aged 12 years and above to vaccinate without further delay. “Booster shots are now freely available for most people and Cabinet calls on those who are eligible to get boosted as soon as possible. We must also continue to wear masks that cover both the mouth and nose, wash or sanitise our hands frequently, keep a safe social distance and ensure adequate ventilation by opening windows,” stated Cabinet.

Letters to the Editor

Press Loadshedding ...unheard of during apartheid, no matter how much the system was despised!! It seems quite apparent that the unacceptably preposterous situation of blackouts has quickly infiltrated our lives, gained momentum and looks like it's going to be a permanent feature of South African lifestyle, pretty much similar to the astronomical price of fuel which has spiralled out of control. Once again the helpless, battered consumer must just pay every time, without as much as a mumble from the ministers. It must be acknowledged that "loadshedding" is not just limited to SA. Other African states also endure, worse than ours. The USA, UK, UAE, SAUDI and some European countries have it, up to a maximum of 2 hours a month. Our situation, as a "first world country" is really bizarre and illogical. To be without electricity for long hours frustrates and disturbs business, health care, students at exams and other serious issues. One cannot continue to blame aging infrastructure and brandish the red card against apartheid. The ANC government is already about 30 years in existence, and never in this country's history has there been so much corruption, looting and brazen lawlessness. Each passing day sees new criminal cases brought to court, tried, found guilty and either adjourned or totally dismissed. How on earth is our country going to progress and succeed if the river of corruption starts from the top and filters all the way down. GREED, NEPOTISM and INCOMPETENCE will annihilate this beautiful country and will be reduced to a typical underdeveloped African country, with its population fleeing to neighbouring countries to seek "greener pastures". Mamelodi Sundowns have started an investigation into the "alleged incident" that brought the Al Ahly team bus to a halt ahead of Saturday's CAF Champions League clash at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg. The Red Devils released a statement prior to kick-off, which was delayed by five minutes, calling out the Brazilians for a lack of organisation. Al Ahly put in a poor performance against Sundowns, as the home side claimed a 1-0 victory courtesy of a Peter Shalulile tap in. Sundowns top Group A with 10 points, while Al Ahly, Al Merrikh and Al Hilal are all on four points. Sundowns statement: Mamelodi Sundowns received information concerning the circumstances and the

Mamelodi Sundowns will take strong disciplinary action including preventing irresponsible supporters from attending future matches if the complaints by Al Ahly are factually justified. Sundowns has a duty and an obligation to ensure that Al Ahly and any other football club that it hosts are treated with the respect, courtesy and dignity that they deserve. Mamelodi Sundowns will also be in contact with Al Ahly to obtain their version of the circumstances concerning this incident.
