KwaDukuza Municipality Mayor, Ricardo Mthembu handed over sunscreen lotions and eye test vouchers to people with albinism on Saturday, 10 June 2017. Mthembu joined forces with Nivea and Spec Savers in the quest to make a big difference in the lives of people with albinism, especially children between 6 and 12 years of age as they received free spectacles. During his address Mayor Mthembu said, “The albinism community should not feel inferior and feel pity for their condition as there is nothing wrong with people that have albinism, it is society that has created myths and negative

perceptions about them. Society should collaboratively play a pivotal role to ensure that these negative perceptions are erased permanently.” The Mayor also expressed that the most pressing myth that needs to be changed is that which has been created by traditional healers which endangers the lives of people with albinism. “We should identify traditional healers that are against this ridiculous notion and run programmes of awareness to educate the public that they should not believe in such myths and help protect our children, brothers and sisters with albinism. “Education for children with albinism should not be compromised, there should be no need for them to attend special

needs schools if there isn't a need, they should attend normal schools like any other children and get all the educational opportunities that a child deserves. Employment, skills development and bursary schemes is something that the municipality should look at being able to provide access to people with albinism as so that they can be able to empower themselves and be able to access opportunities that arise,” said Mthembu. He added that KwaDukuza Municipality should work together and create more programmes especially in schools that assist the albinism community and that it should not just end at implementation but programmes should be monitored and observed closely to see if they are bearing the desired fruits.

A Cell C outlet at Ushaka Mall in KwaDukuza is the recent victim of the 'Mall Robberies' that have clouded KwaZulu-Natal in recent months. It is alleged that on Tuesday, 13 June 2017, at around 10h57am, four unknown men driving a silver polo held Cell C staff members at gunpoint and fled with cellphones. Despite the incident, Ushaka Mall Centre Manager, Mr.Aiden Isaac has assured customers that the mall is open for business and as safe as ever. “This was an organised crime, they came in casually and quietly. They did not show any signs that they might be criminals. They then held staff members at gunpoint and led them into the storeroom where they took cellphones and left. Fortunately none of the staff members were hurt. “As soon as the security staff became aware they responded quickly, it took less than 30 seconds, however the criminals had already left. The actual crime took place at the store and did not affect the perimeter of the mall. The mall is operational and still safe for people to use” said Isaac before adding that they are in the process of building a security tower to further strengthen their guard.

A Ford Kuga caught alight on Dick King Road, in KwaDukuza on Monday, 12 June 2017. This was one of many Ford Kugas that have caught alight since the cars hit the South African market in 2010. In South Africa alone, numerous Ford Kugas of the 1.6-litre EcoBoost variant caught fire during 2015 and 2017. In December 2016, Ford South Africa requested that all local Kuga owners take their vehicles in for a safety inspection. However, even after one owner took her vehicle to a dealership, whose mechanics checked it and assured the owner that the vehicle was safe, the car still caught fire the very next day. Another owner was assured by a dealership that his vehicle would be fine as long as the coolant level was correct, but his Kuga burned a few days later. One driver is reported to have died as a result of a fire in his Kuga in December 2015. His vehicle allegedly exhibited several faults, but was checked by Ford and passed as safe shortly before the fire. Decades later, we continue to commemorate those who lost their lives in the resistance against the apartheid regime on that fateful day in 1976. Youth Day has also become a platform for encouraging South Africans to make their own sacrifices and play their part in growing their communities and the country as a whole. Just as the youth of 1976 fought against apartheid, the youth of today are encouraged to fight against challenges such as HIV/AIDS, unemployment, poverty and crime.

Youth Day is observed on 16 June and commemorates the protest of thousands of students from various Soweto schools who took to the streets to protest against the implementation of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction in the local schools. The historic day honours the deaths of hundreds of Soweto school children on a day that changed the course of the country's history. On 16 June 1976, between 3000 and 10 000 marched to demonstrate and protest against the government's directive. The march was meant to culminate at a rally in Orlando Stadium. Stanger Youth Forum have planned a fun-filled family day programme on Friday, June 16 at the Manor Ground commencing at 9am. The Forum kicks off its programme with a 5km fun walk/run through the streets of Manor and Windy Heights before finishing at the Manor Ground. Five well-stocked refreshment stations have been strategically placed throughout the 5km route ensuring runners and walkers are not dehydrated. The fun run cost R10 per person (children and adults). Special commemorative medals will

Volleyball must comprise of five males and one female with netball restricted to seven females. Participation in the tournament is free. All matches will be played on a knockout basis with trophies awarded to the winners and

medals to the runners-up. There will be a miniathletics meeting catering for the young and old. Some of the events will include a 200m walking race and a musical cushion for grandparents, 100m sprints for mothers and fathers, tyre races for the youth, blind search and balloon bursting for toddlers. The highlight will be a tug-o-war comprising of five males and two females per team.

Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in all the athletics events. There will be live gospel music throughout the day with youth/praise and worship teams given an opportunity to showcase their talent on the stage for a maximum of 15 minutes. Guest artists include Jason D (from Phoenix, who toured the United States of America) and guest speaker

KWADUKUZA MUNICIPALITY MESSAGE FROM HIS WORSHIP THE MAYOR OF KWADUKUZA MUNICIPALITY, COUNCILLOR RICARDO MTHEMBU, ON THE OCCASION OF THE 41ST ANNIVERSARY OF THE SOWETO UPRISING Fellow residents, This year marks the 41st Anniversary of the June 16, 1976 Soweto Uprising. We celebrate this milestone under the theme: “The Year of OR Tambo: Advancing Youth Economic Participation”. As we celebrate this Anniversary we are alive to the fact that our youth were at the forefront of the fight against apartheid. We also take pride in the recognition of the fact the Class of 1976 exposed the brutality of the apartheid regime to the world and ignited resistance around the country. Our message, forty-one years later, is that young people must help to keep their legacy alive by taking advantage of opportunities to build our country and change their lives. Young people should join the ranks of active and responsible citizens by participating in democratic structures and processes like elections. They should cherish and jealously protect schools, libraries and centres for learning. All communities must ensure that young people finish secondary school and gain the necessary skills to change

their own lives and grow our country. We must always remember that the youth of 76 fought for equal and quality education for all; let's educate our young people to honour their legacy. Technical Vocational Education and Training colleges deliver skills and training that are essential to addressing the skills gap in our economy. We must encourage our youth to enrol in these colleges. The National Development Plan singles out our youthful population as an opportunity to boost economic growth, increase employment and reduce poverty. Government and the private sector have established a fund for Small Business Support, with equal contributions from both partners. It provides “venture” capital-type funding and mentoring to target groups, especially black entrepreneurs. Our young people must take advantage of such opportunities. Initiatives such as the Social Accord on Youth Employment and Youth Employment Tax Incentive are helping change the tide of youth unemployment. The Small Enterprise Development Agency and the National Youth Development

Agency also support young entrepreneurs. Young people must access these opportunities. In honour of the memory of Oliver Reginald Tambo, the youth must acknowledge their abiding responsibility to protect OR Tambo's legacy. Let us use the Youth Month to honour the sacrifices and contributions of OR Tambo towards a free, non-racial and democratic South Africa. We should also learn more about the immense sacrifices our struggle icons made to be where we are today. The youth need to work together with government to create the country OR Tambo envisaged. The youth have to play an active role in their communities in improving people's lives and making sure the economy works for everyone. Our young lions and lionesses have the capacity to turn the tide and must act against such crimes as human trafficking, abuse of women and children, drug and substance abuse, to create safer environments for our communities.
