TEACHERS: On Tuesday Lee Primary School Teachers in Darnall wore different school uniforms to commemorate Youth Day.
Teachers and learners at Lee Primary School in Darnall commemorated Youth Month on Monday and Tuesday this week. The purpose of the commemoration was to reflect on the role of youth in liberation of South Africa from the apartheid regime. Pupils were taught about the importance of knowing and understanding their history and the role played by the youth of 1976.
As part of the day's proceedings learners competed in different tasks. Today South Africans are commemorating the 45th anniversary of the Soweto youth uprising, where thousands of students from Soweto protested against Bantu Education which institutionalised in Afrikaans as a medium language of communication.

The next challenge is to resume international flights, though South Africa remains cut off from much of the world due to pandemic travel restrictions. The carrier is among a number of South African state-owned companies to have deteriorated into a state of financial distress over the past several years, in large part due to mis-management and corruption. However, the SAA disposal marks the first effective privatization of a major entity since the sale of former phone monopoly Telkom SA SOC Ltd. about two decades ago.

The League held the Charlotte Maxeke Memorial Lecture at Luthuli Museum in Groutville, on Thursday last week. The Lecture was delivered by the League's provincial chairperson Nonhlanhla Khoza. SAGA chairperson Damien Enslin said the most pressing issue in the proposed Bill is the removal of the citizens' right to choose to own a firearm for selfdefense purposes. “How government could ever think about removing the right to choose to own a firearm for selfdefence, when we are experiencing a severe crime rate and where even the police have previously admitted that they don't have sufficient capacity to protect all citizens, is completely inconceivable. “SAGA is 1442 prepared to 2021 take this matter to Court to protect its members and ordinary South R1785 African's right Per Cattle to choose a firearm for per share self-defence,” Enslin stated. high ranking government officials enjoy round the clock protection from the SAPS and private security firms, courtesy of the taxpayers. “SAGA believes in the right of law-abiding and responsible citizens to choose to own and use firearms for sport, self-defence, recreation and other legitimate purposes,” he reiterated. However, Gun Free South Africa (GFSA) has welcomed this new Bill, stating that gun violence in the country had now reached “epidemic proportions”. The organization further said firearms had now “overtaken knives” as the weapon most used in murders. “All of us living in SA are grappling with ways to protect ourselves, our family, friends, colleagues and wider community from violent crime. The best way to do this is to use available evidence to make the most informed decision. The available evidence shows that reducing access to firearms helps make our homes, communities and country safer,” GFSA said in a statement. Commenting on the proposed amendments, Minister of Police Bheki cele said, “The proposed amendments respond to the overarching policy principles of non-proliferation of firearms in South Africa and the strengthening of the processes relating to the applications for firearm, and ammunition licences and the management of firearms and ammunition”.

Ashville Primary IFP calls on Zikalala to commemorates Child investigate corrupt Protection Week politicians
The IFP calls on the KZN Premier, Sihle Zikalala, to urgently appoint a task team to investigate serious allegations that some politicians are alleged to be funding gangs to commit crimes in Pietermaritzburg and surrounding areas. The IFP's calls comes after the KwaZulu-Natal police revealed that there are some high-profile people, politicians and business owners in Pietermaritzburg surroundings who are funding gangs to commit crimes, “We are concerned about these allegations of unholy alliance between politicians and criminals. The support received by mafias from elected, criminally accused politicians leads to more criminal activities. The link between police and gangs must also be investigated.
The IFP wants to know who are these politicians and business owners who are sheep by day and wolf by night by being in cahoots with criminals. Such politicians must be exposed and be subjected to the full might of the law. It is shocking and embarrassing that we have leaders who should be working hard in protecting the communities that elected them into power yet they are alleged to be the enablers of criminal elements that are terrorising the very same people,” said Inkatha Freedom Party in a statement. “Now we know the reasons behind the latest crime statistics delivered by National Minister of Police, Bheki Cele last month, tracking criminal patterns in the country between January and March 2021 which
painted a bleak picture about KwaZulu-Natal as it recorded a double digit increase in overall crimes of 16.9%. This is a clear proof that we live in a mafia state, where the politicians, law enforcement agencies and criminals work hand-in-hand planning how to kill and rob people of their hard earned money. Citizens' confidence in the capacity of our law enforcement agencies and public leaders to root out crime and corruption has been eroded, and that's not surprising. It is therefore important that this criminal network must be rooted out from all spheres of society, including from inside the law enforcement agencies themselves. Such political leaders do not deserve to be public representatives, they belong in jail. They are a disgrace,” added the IFP.
Beauty is the illumination of your soul There is no definition to beauty, which is why you should never let anyone dull your sparkle, your beauty should never be defined by mirror but should be defined by your actions, these words were uttered by resurgent model Zanele Khumalo (16) from Mandeni in ward 5. Zanele recently took modelling as a hobby and went on to be among the finalist for Miss Durban 2021. The stunning lass is
currently doing grade 11 at Tugela Secondary School. Speaking to Xpress Times about her journey to Miss Durban, Khumalo said many people were shocked to see her entering the competition since it was her first time competing, “Many people wondered why I entered Miss Durban as it was my first competition was that I come from a small rural area from Mandeni so there aren't many opportunities like this one and so when I saw the post like this on social media I could not let this opportunity pass me and I told myself that I will challenge myself and see where this new venture will lead me and what doors it will open for me, so that when those doors are open I can open them for girls in my community and bring out their talents ,help those in need and show them that not all things need money to be successful ,you just have to work hard enough and you will achieve it .I love modelling cause it teaches me about selfrespect knowledge actually about yourself. Beauty is how you feel inside and it reflects in your own eyes. My dream is to
change what I can with the time that God has given me and to live a legacy that will continue for years and change other people lives,” said Zanele Khumalo. When asked about her role models, Zanele Khumalo said she draws inspiration from her fearless mother and former Miss Universe, Zozibini Tunzi. Zanele entered the competition after she saw a post on social media. Residing from rural areas, plagued by socials ills, Miss Durban Finalist recently volunteered at Ikhwezi Welfare Organisation. The organisation houses psychically challenged children around Mandeni, Khumalo said working with this organisation was a life changing experience for her, “non-profit jobs offer the opportunity to be a part of something that will profoundly impact society. It was challenging at times but you get to meet diverse people from various backgrounds and experience different situations,” reiterated elegant Khumalo. In conclusion Zanele Khumalo thanked her family and further urged the Ilembe community at large to vote for her when voting lines open. If you wish to vote for Zanele Khumalo and help her put ILembe District on the map, SMS DBN 237 to 35180.

The F.D.A. tells Johnson & Johnson throw out about 60 million Reports have emerged in the USA that the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ordered approximately 60 million Johnson & Johnson vaccine doses be discarded, after concerns that the vaccines could have been contaminated at the manufacturing plant. South Africa had approximately 2 million doses of J&J vaccines on hold, awaiting further
instruction from the FDA. South African health authorities, who have been awaiting guidance about two million J&J doses that were compounded and finished at an Aspen Pharmcare facility in Gqeberha have also decided to destroy thoise doses. However J&J has promised to deliver 300 000 new doses to be used to vaccinate teachers. The agency said in a press release that it authorized
some batches for use but not others, but it didn't provide specific numbers, “These actions followed an extensive review of records, including the production history of the facility and the testing performed to evaluate the quality of the product,” Dr. Peter Marks, director of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said in the release.
Wheelchair initiative gains momentum By Xpress Reporter
An initiative started by community activist Cyril Pandaram is gaining momentum. Pandaram recently put out a call for anyone willing to donate a wheelchair for an elderly citizen, and a Good Samaritan came forward. The wheelchair was handed over to the elderly citizen, who will now be enjoying better mobility, at the weekend. Pandaram says there are more underprivileged people that need assistance. Anyone willing to come forward to donate a wheelchair, is welcome to contact Pandaram, or to s e n d a n e - m a i l t o : ommnyandu@hotmail.com. Djokovic completes stunning French Open final comeback to win 19th Grand Slam title
the opener as a series of razor-sharp returns put Tsitsipas back on level terms. In a dramatic tiebreaker, Tsitsipas saw a 4/0 and 5/2 lead disappear. He had to save a set point before claiming the opener after 70 minutes when Djokovic fired a forehand wide. Dropping the opening set at this year's Roland Garros was familiar territory for Djokovic. He had to recover from two sets down to beat Lorenzo Musetti in the last 16 and lost the opener against Nadal on Friday. Tsitsipas, 12 years the world number one's junior, broke again in the first game of the second set as the 2016 champion looked increasingly weary in the 30-degree afternoon heat. The Greek edged ahead 5-2 and pocketed the second set with his eighth ace of the contest. But the top seed wasn't finished, breaking in the fourth game of the third set to cut the deficit. Tsitsipas then called the trainer to treat a back problem which also gave him the opportunity to change the clay-covered shirt he'd worn since a first set tumble. Thirty minutes later, it was two sets apiece after Djokovic secured a double break. As the shadows swept across Court Philippe Chatrier, Tsitsipas' mood also darkened as he slipped 3-1 down in the decider. As the clock ticked past four hours, he fought off two more break points in the seventh game but Djokovic was not to be denied his latest slice of history taking the glory on his second championship point.
'I don't know whether he'll ever play football again' - sports cardiologist on Eriksen
A sports cardiologist who previously worked with Christian Eriksen at Tottenham said the midfielder, now at Inter Milan, was unlikely to play again. "Clearly something went terribly wrong," Sanjay Sharma, professor of sports cardiology at St George's, University of London. "But they managed to get him back. The question is what happened? And why did it happen? "This guy had normal tests all the way up to 2019 so how do you explain this cardiac arrest?" Sharma, who chairs the Football Association's expert cardiac consensus group, said there were multiple reasons a cardiac arrest could have happened, such as high temperatures or an unidentified
'We're a young team, we're still rebuilding’ Proteas fast bowler Kagiso Rabada said they're still growing as a team despite their convincing innings and 63-run win over the West Indies in the first Test at St Lucia. Rabada's 5/34 in 20 overs in the second innings played a huge role in the game getting wrapped up in an extended third morning where the West Indies were bowled out for 162 after starting the day on 82/4. Rabada, who removed openers Kraigg Brathwaite and Kieron Powell, came back to collect the
Novak Djokovic, first man in 52 years to win a double grand slam
Novak Djokovic claimed a 19th Grand Slam title and became the first man in 52 years to win all four majors twice when he came from two sets down to beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in a gripping French Open final on Sunday. The world number one triumphed 6-7 (6/8), 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 over the Greek 22-year-old who was playing in his first Slam final. Djokovic is now just one major away from equalling the all-time record of 20, jointly held by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. It was a second French Open crown for Djokovic after his 2016 victory and adds to his nine Australian Opens, five Wimbledon titles and three at the US Open. The 34-year-old is the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win all four Slams on multiple occasions and just the third in history. Djokovic had also spent more than four hours on court on Friday to knock out defending champion Rafael Nadal. Djokovic is the first man ever to win a Slam title by twice coming back from two sets down in same the tournament. Djokovic now has 84 career titles in total while Sunday's win pushed him to the brink of $150 million in prize money. Tsitsipas survived a nervy opening service game, having to save two break points. Djokovic, by contrast, didn't concede a point in his first three service games. But suddenly he faced a set point in the 10th game courtesy of an ugly shank but saved it after a 26shot rally. Fired up by a time violation, Djokovic broke for the first time for a 6-5 lead but was unable to serve out
Kagiso Rabada after first Test Windies win:
condition. But he said reports after the match that Eriksen, 29, was awake in hospital were "a very good sign". "I'm very pleased," he said. "The fact he's stable and awake, his outlook is going to be very good. I don't know whether he'll ever play football again. Without putting it too bluntly, he died today, albeit for a few minutes, but he did die and would the medical professional allow him to die again? The answer is no." Former Tottenham player and manager Glenn Hoddle, who suffered a cardiac arrest while working for TV in 2018, tweeted: "Thank God Christian is OK. And to those who did the CPR, it's simple, you saved his life as I know so well.”
scalps of Jermaine Blackwood, Rahkeem Cornwall and Joshua Da Silva to get his 10th fivewicket haul in Test cricket. Rabada though said they needed to maintain their performance for the second Test that starts on Friday at the same ground. Proteas' choice on whether to take a knee: 'Every player has a right when it comes to BLM gesture' Proteas Test captain Dean Elgar said players who are comfortable taking the knee can do so ahead of
their two Tests and five T20Is tour against the West Indies. Cricket The Proteas didn't have a proper warm-up game leading into the series, but had a preparation camp and an internal training game. Rabada said they put in a lot of work in the build-up that paid off in the Test match. Lungi Ngidi, who dismembered the West Indies' lower middle-order in the first innings, took South Africa's other five-fer. The West Indies were bowled out for 97 in the first dig and were unable to fully recover. There also was Anrich Nortje's pace that brought i m p o r t a n t breakthroughs that allowed the other bowlers to prosper. Rabada said Ngidi's effort was a product of the massive behind-thescenes work he has been putting in. Kagiso and the Proteas celebrate
