h e residents of Zikhalafukwe Township in Etete h a v e b e e n protesting for better houses, roads, w a t e r, t o i l e t s , schools and clinics since Sunday and continued on Monday 12 August 2013. According to the community the cause of the protest is due to their high concern by the state of the area they are living in. A community meeting which was formally a n n o u n c e d o n Wednesday evening was supposed to take place but that meeting was later cancelled on Thursday, 8 August 2013 because municipal officials who were supposed to attend the meeting did not show up. This angered residents of the Etete Township who felt that their complaints fell on deaf ears. Tha Hlongwane, a community member of Zikhalafukwe township, said that it has been eight years now and still no developmental changes have been made in the area. “I got very angry when the mayor was addressing the community telling them that they were misinformed.” He also added that the same community protested about the above issues even last year. ‘Hit and run’ motor vehicle accident… at Gandhi Street

DEAD OF NIGHT: A white BMW smashed into a blue Toyota Corolla and drove off on Saturday, 10 August 2013 at approximately 18h15 to 18h30

By Xpress Reporter

The intersection between Mahatma Gandhi and Chief Albert Luthuli is proving to be a high accident zone with yet another incident that happened on Saturday, 10 August 2013 at approximately 18h15 to 18h30. According to an eyewitness a white BMW smashed into a blue Toyota Corolla that a local was driving in with two female passengers also in the vehicle. “The car (BMW) had a smash on the left side when it drove off,” said the male eyewitness. He added that the vehicle, with ND registration, had graphics at the bottom of the back door. It is alleged that the BMW drove through in spite of a red traffic signal smashing the Corolla. The father-in-law of the driver of

the Corolla said that the people in this vehicle only had 'slight injuries.' The KwaDukuza SAPS was at the scene of the crime and investigations are currently under way. The Gandhi statue adjacent to the Mahatma Gandhi and Chief Albert Luthuli Streets intersection is an in animate witness to the three accidents in the space of 11 days. In the article “Motor vehicle accidents in Mahatma Gandhi Street” (9 August 2013) Xpress Times edition we reported a 'smashed car laying on a suspended mangled ladder and a busted Telkom box freak accident' on Wednesday, 31 July; a domino effect accident in front of ZMS involving three vans on Friday, 2 August and the above hit and run accident. Motorists are urged to be careful, be alert and obey traffic regulations at this high risk accident intersection

Young writers to celebrate their work By Xpress Reporter

Eleven proud young North Coast writers will get to see their work in print at the third annual launch of the “I Write My Mind Out” anthology at the Luthuli Museum on 15 August 2013. The launch is the result of a partnership between the Fundanami Trust established by retired English teachers Michael and Eliz Wood to assist in improving literacy among schools in KwaZulu-Natal and the Luthuli Museum a national heritage

museum opened in 2004 to create awareness about the life and legacy of Africa's first Nobel Peace prize laureate Chief Albert Luthuli. This is the third collection of short stories and poems entitled “I Write My Mind Out” produced by young primary school learners from schools such as Stanger secondary, Mavivane, Nonoti, Glenhills, Melville and Zilungisele Primary. At the launch, the learners will present their work produced during a three

day workshop in May to their peers, parents, educators and members of the media. “One of the key objectives of the Fundanami trust is to produce books which reflect a South African content and have anecdotes that are strongly flavoured by a life experience here. We want learners to have the opportunity to read about things that they can relate to and that reflect what they experience,” said Fundanami Trust director, Mike Wood.

State hospitals could be in trouble By Xpress Reporter

If the KwaZulu-Natal health department's appeal for its current budget to be extended by a further R1.6 billion is turned down, elective procedures may be put on hold and state hospitals will only provide emergency services. Provincial director-general Sibongile Zungu painted a miserable picture in the event of the funding not being received. The amount requested is in addition to the R28 billion budget allocated to the department earlier this financial year. A report tabled to the health portfolio committee last week said of the R1.6 billion, R732 million was requested from the provincial Treasury and R950 million from national Treasury. Of the requested amount, R332 million was to be spent on paying accruals and to attend to critical needs such as backlogs in maintenance, A further R400 million was requested to strengthen tender procedures, absorb nursing staff, registrars and health professionals, filling critical posts for new clinics and intensive care units, and to fund trainees in Cuba. They hope to spend the other

R950 million on infrastructure projects and HIV/Aids programmes. “It will be critical not to implement planned activities in order to remain within the budget,” she said, adding that such a move would put pressures on the department's budget in the following financial years. In the event the department received the funds, Zungu said, it would contain costs and use limited resources effectively, strengthen tender processes and

identify savings, prevent fraud and corruption and ensure optimal use of its employees. But, if no funding was received, there would be no new employees except for critical posts, there would be delays in infrastructure projects that are under way and they would have to defer the decision to acquire new equipment and vehicles. The department is now pinning its hopes for additional allocation on the adjustment budget to be made by Treasury later this year.

Hindus across the globe will celebrate the sacred day of Rakhsha Bandhan or Rakhi, which is a celebration of the bond of love and the bond of family on Tuesday, 20 August 2013. On this day, sisters tie sacred threads around their brothers' wrists, symbolizing their love and affection. In return, the brother promises to protect his sister and to always be there for her. Rakhsha means “protection” and Bandhan means a “bond.” Thus, Rakhsha Bandhan

The Hindu festival going by the name “Vara Lakshmi Vratha” is celebrated on the Friday before the full moon in the Tamil Month 'Aadi/Avani' which corresponds to the English months of JulyAugust. It is a festival to propitiate the goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu. Varalakshmi is one who grants boons (Varam). There are many festivals in the

year dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi. Among them, Va r a l a k s h m i Vr a t h a m i s considered very auspicious because it is marked by strict observance of certain practices and austerities. The name Vishnu really means pervading everywhere, and Lakshmi, his consort, is symbolical of the forces found everywhere. Eight forces or energies are recognised and they are known as Sri (Wealth), Bhu (Earth), Sarasvati

Namibia is in the middle of its worst drought in 30 years

(Washington Post) - With crops drying up, there are 780,000 people, or one in three Namibians, officially classified as “severely or moderately food insecure,” which means that they can't count on

consistent access to food. The statistic above includes an estimated 105,000 children under age five. Hunger is already a problem for Namibian children, 29 percent of whom have stunted growth for want of sufficient nutrition. That effects permanent physical and mental development. As many as 400,000 people may be at risk of going hungry, up from 300,000 in May. The government warns that there may not be enough water for the country's people, much less its livestock, which could lengthen the crisis. Aid groups say they are underfunded.

Five dead in Indonesian volcanic eruption (Al Jazeera) - Five people have been killed after an Indonesian volcano erupted, spewing hot ash and rocks high into the air. Mount Rokatenda, on the tiny island of Palue, sent fast-moving red-hot ash onto a nearby beach, leaving three adults and two children dead on Saturday, said volcanology centre head, Surono. "We have found the bodies of the adults, but we are still looking for the children, and it is difficult because the area is still very hot," he added. The volcano began erupting at 4:27 am (20:27 GMT Friday) and it continued for nearly four hours, said Surono. He said volcanic ash travelled as far as 2,000m (6,560 feet) from the crater.

Margo Gonsalves Hairstylist / Cancer survivor

Margo Gonsalves arrived in KwaDukuza 35 years ago to take over her aunt's salon, and has been providing the community with superb service ever since. Her passion for hairstyling and making people look good motivated her to keep doing what she loves. “I am blessed to be able to touch so many clients' lives every day,” said Margo. Margo was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, but her zest for life and faith in God carried her through. “My message to women is when you wake up to a new day or a new week, thank God that you are exactly the person you are, and smile,” she said. “I thank my husband for the support he has always shown me.”

The women educators together with female learners got the rapt attention of citizens and drivers outside the school brandishing placards and chanting slogans all against women and child rape and abuse on Thursday, 8 August 2013. The Keynote speaker, Monica Maphumulo (an Intermediary at the KwaDukuza Magistrates Court), gave Dawnview learners a thorough presentation from A-Z on court procedures and children's rights at an extended morning assembly. “Women should never forget how special they are as in today's world they have the opportunity to achieve anything they want. One of the most courageous things you can do is identify yourself, know who you are, what you believe in and where you want to go. Hold on to that and never let go. Love yourself as there is no one in this world who will love you more. Each and every one of us are born with an inner strength that needs to be revealed and never allow hardships to dictate to you and who you become. This era is for US.”

“Respect for self and others, coupled with determination are the key ingredients to a successful life. However, success is a high rise building that requires a firm foundation. This firm foundation is education.”

“I am a daughter, a wife, a sister, a cousin, a niece, an aunt, a friend but most especially, I am a woman a rock. Being a mother and a wife and working at the same time is not easy but it takes a strong woman to manage, and yes we manage because we are strong. That's why we say Wathinta abafazi, w a t h i n t a imbokodo…You strike a woman, you strike a rock.”

“To me, Womens Day is inspirational as it allows women around the world to express their solidarity with each other in facing challenges against men and accomplishing it through hard work and dedication.”

After 7 years in pain I’m finally happy. Many years back before I met this powerful spiritual healer MAMA MADINA there was no happiness in my life. I had visited many healers but nobody could help. They only asked for money. Many years back I lost my husband. He left me with two kids. Fortunately we had built a house and had a small business I am currently running. But my in-laws turned against me and wanted to take my house away because I was not officially married to him. I became so worried about my children because the business wasn’t doing so well. The insurance also delayed to release the money that belonged to my husband. As I read of MAMA MADINA a healer in one of the local newspapers. She helped me so much. My in-laws changed and became so friendly again. They left me in the house. My business started doing well. The insurance also released the money that belonged to my husband. We are happy now with my children. I don’t know how much I can thank MAMA MADINA but only God knows. Long live MAMA MADINA. MAMA MADINA also helps in problems with giving luck, lost lovers, family problems, financial problems, tokoloshe in homes etc. So if you have suffered enough, rush to her for help. Guaranteed you will be happy again. NB. Don’t consider your problem too big because it’s very small compared to MAMA MADINA’s powers.

Essence of Life Women’s Day celebrated across KwaDukuza 9 Tips to Treat Colds and Flu the 'Natural' Way With no cure in sight for the cold or the flu, current treatments can at best bring symptom relief or shorten the duration of those symptoms. You can take one of a variety of medications that may help relieve your symptoms, or you can take the natural approach.

CLEAR MESSAGE: Penny Dhaver (left) addressing the women at the Child Welfare headquarters

By Xpress Reporter

Many businesses, organisations and various local governmental departments celebrated Women's Day last week with pomp, fanfare and joyous fun.

The Child Welfare SA: KwaDukuza organized a Women's Day that had all the e l e m e n t s o f l e g a c y, pampering, flair and all things feminine on Wednesday, 7 August 2013. A select group

of ladies where showered with adoration, goodie bags, “high tea” and edutainment. The Natural Therapeutic Clinic were busy administering special massages whilst the

pampered watched flower arrangements taking place and listened to talks by special guests. The women were treated to lunch and also enjoyed makeup applications.

Radha Roopsingh hosts successfull Games Day

Radha Roopsingh Primary School hosted a memorable Games Day on 8 August 2013 at the school grounds. Learners enjoyed a host of activities with the Foundation Phase learners Grade R-3) engaged in inter class activities that included 50/100m sprints, duck walks, musical cushion and tug-owar to name a few. The bigger learners (Grade 4-7) were enthralled with the 5-aside soccer and netball tournament.

1. Blow Your Nose Often - and the Right Way It's important to blow your nose regularly when you have a cold rather than sniffling mucus back into your head. But when you blow hard, pressure can cause an earache. The best way to blow your nose is to press a finger over one nostril while you blow gently to clear the other. Wash your hands after blowing your nose. 2. Stay Rested Resting when you first come down with a cold or the flu helps your body direct its energy toward the immune battle. This battle taxes the body. So give it a little help by lying down under a blanket. 3. Gargle Gargling can moisten a sore throat and bring temporary relief. Try a teaspoon of salt dissolved in warm water, four times daily. To reduce the tickle in your throat, try an astringent gargle - such as tea that contains tannin -- to tighten the membranes. Or use a thick, viscous gargle made with honey, popular in folk medicine. Steep one tablespoon of raspberry leaves or lemon juice in two cups of hot water; mix with one teaspoon of honey. Let the mixture cool to room temperature before gargling. Honey should never be given to children less than 1 year old. 4. Drink Hot Liquids Hot liquids relieve nasal congestion, help prevent dehydration, and can soothe the uncomfortably inflamed membranes that line your nose and throat. 5. Take a Steamy Shower Steamy showers moisturise your nasal passages and relax you. If you're dizzy from the flu, run a steamy shower while you sit on a chair nearby and take a sponge bath. 6. Use a Salve Under Your Nose A small dab of mentholated salve under your nose can open breathing passages and help soothe the irritated skin at the base of the nose. Menthol, eucalyptus and camphor all have mild numbing ingredients that may help relieve the pain of a nose rubbed raw. 7. Apply Hot or Cold Packs Around Your Congested Sinuses Either temperature may help you feel more comfortable. You can buy reusable hot or cold packs at a drugstore. Or make your own. Take a damp washcloth and heat it for 55 seconds in a microwave (test the temperature first to make sure it's right for you.) Or take a small bag of frozen peas to use as a cold pack. 8. Sleep With an Extra Pillow Under Your Head This will help with the drainage of nasal passages. If the angle is too awkward, try placing the pillows between the mattress and the box springs to create a more gradual slope. 9. Don't Fly Unless Necessary There's no point adding stress to your already stressed-out upper respiratory system, and that's what the change in air pressure will do. Flying with cold or flu congestion can hurt your eardrums as a result of pressure changes during takeoff and landing. If you must fly, use a decongestant and carry a nasal spray with you to use just before takeoff and landing. Chewing gum and swallowing frequently can also help relieve pressure. Remember, serious conditions can masquerade as the common cold and a mild infection can evolve into something more serious. If you have severe symptoms or are feeling sicker with each passing day, see a doctor.

Seen engaged in fierce competition are the learners of Radha Roopsingh at the Games Day

A preview of the English FA Premier League

The start of the FA English Premier League is upon us with the season kicking off on Saturday 17 August at Anfield where Liverpool will host Stoke City. Our expert AK Hoosain looks at the key players for each club. ARSENAL The key players remain the same Arteta, Cazorla and Koscielny. With his performances on tour, Giroud appears to have responded well to the threat of competition and similarly the 16-year-old Gedion Zelalem might well be a star in the making. Arsene Wenger has admitted the squad is not good enough to compete for the whole season so expect a few signings. ASTON VILLA A dangerous number of the players could catch secondseasonitis, so it's vital that the likes of Lowton, Westwood, Sylla and Benteke continue to progress. Paul Lambert will be looking for a much improved finish this season. CARDIFF The club have broken their transfer record twice with young centre back Steven Caulker who could be a huge influence for them in defence and the addition of and Chilean International Gary Medel nicknamed the “Pitbull” who is the clubs record signing. The young South Korean midfielder Kim Bokyung, signed from Cerezo Osaka, could be a Premier League star while the still have a player like Craig Bellamy who always relishes the challenge. CHELSEA Hazard will really come into his own as we saw flashes last season but he was often overshadowed by Mata also Lukaku is back from a successful loan at West Brom and seems a more accomplished player and the return of the special one Jose Mourinho will be looking forward to lead his team to success. CRYSTAL PALACE Mile Jedinak, player of the year last season, will be key in midfield. I expect Speroni will see a lot of action in goal, while Campaña has had a cracking pre-season, as has Stephen Dobbie. Jonny Williams, meanwhile, will hopefully be the next academy player to make it big while the additions of Marouane Chamakh EVERTON Kevin Mirallas is the key figure. He showed some real quality last season, but it was a

campaign badly disrupted by injuries. If he can stay fit he can score plenty of goals in this side. Two youngsters to watch out for are the former Barnsley defender John Stones, who I'm tipping as a future England international, and talented academy product Ross Barkley, who I hope will finally become a regular in the side and if Martinez can keep hold of Felliani, Baines then he has a real chance of challenging for a top six spot with Martinez making his side play more attacking football with our very own Steven Pienaar being a key member in the Everton squad with the likes of new signing Arone Kone looking to impress. FULHAM If they can maintain a smile on Berba's face, via a decent supply of the ball and support up front, then things will be going well. Watch out for Noe Baba and a lad called Moussa Dembélé (yes, really) from the U-18s. The club have also bought Dutch keeper Maarten Stekelenburg, Adel Taarabt, Fernando Amorebieta. Martin Jol will look for his team to push for a top eight finish and even push for Europa league qualification. HULL CITY Sone Aluko was the best player in the Championship last season until he got injured. He could light up the Premier League. Neutral fans will love him. Steve Bruce will use his experience to keep his relatively unknown up this season. LIVERPOOL Coutinho could be crucial. We saw at the end of last season what he can do. Lucas, with luck, will be back to his best finally after injury and the skipper … he can still cut it. At the back, Agger (provided he remains at Liverpool) will star, while the new kid in midfield, Luis Alberto, looks to have all the tricks although the Suarez saga put some strain on the squad the longer it plays out. MANCHESTER CITY
