KwaDukuza's biggest Diwali celebration
49 Mahatma Gandhi Str. Tel : (032) 551 1522
KwaDukuza Mall is excited to host over 4,000 people from all faiths at the community's biggest Diwali Celebration. This FREE and power packed event is set for Saturday the 19th of October from 2pm till late. Following the success of the 2018 event, the KwaDukuza Diwali Association has decided to go bigger and better by taking the mainstage to the lower end of the mall parking below entrance gate 3. The festivities will kick-off at 2pm with a jampacked entertainment programme followed by dinner after 6pm; the much-anticipated fireworks display will take place after 9pm and the event will culminate with its first time ever bhangra bash with DJs Suren, Kishor and Nikesh. "Although Diwali is a Hindu festival, KwaDukuza Mall along with Sibaya Community Trust, two of the events main sponsors are proud to go beyond social barriers and host our community as one, noting the public needs KWADUKUZAS BIGGEST DIWALI CELEBRATION," said Raveshin Veerasamy, Centre Manager for KwaDukuza Mall. Scintillating performances by artists from across the region are sure to entertain our attendees thoroughly. Trisha's Dance Academy, Riya's Dance School, Caitanya's School of Dance, Precina's Dance School, Kumari Lucy Dance Academy and Janitha's Dance School to name a few will bring their dance moves to our stage this year. We also have local singing sensations Dinny Ramharat, Suvena Jaimungal as well as Omesh & Nerasha of Naya Savera to seranade you and not forgetting performances by the Stanger & District Association for the Aged (SADAFTA) as well as the ever popular Tyles and Super Tyles (Juniors). “The main attraction for the night is yet again well-known comedian and stage personality Muthu Murugan, who had the crowd roaring with laughter last year. His slot this year will include the Leona Dean Dancers (pictured). This award winning and highly acclaimed dance group will be making their debut at KwaDukuza's Diwali Celebration with a spine-thrilling performance,” concludes Veerasamy. As a means to ensure safety, KwaDukuza Mall and the KwaDukuza Diwali Association have employed strict security and reserve the right to admission. For more information about the event contact the organisers directly on 072 726 5357 or 076 505 6825, or like the KwaDukuza Mall Facebook page.

“Decaying flats” given to Ward 16 residents members. She also added that some of the flats were occupied by tenants, while the rightful owners were difficult to locate. She said in cases where the rightful owner had deceased, “Siblings that still occupied the flats often bickered about the family member in whose name the title deed should be made out”. She said this delayed the issuing of the title deed. Many of the residents who attended the meeting, which was attended by Ward 16 Councillor Jennifer Vallan and ANC PR Councillor Mohammed Suleiman, complained about the dilapidation of the flats being transferred. Thungo said while the municipality was fully aware of this situation, a request had been made to the provincial Department of Human Settlements for the flats to be renovated. She said the department had told the municipality that there was no funding to carry out the renovations. “I am an elderly pensioner. How am I supposed to afford the expensive renovations to my flat? Living in a place that is practically falling down is not safe for me and my family,” pointed out one of the residents.
DECREPIT: Some of the flats being occupied by residents of Ward 16 are crumbling, posing a serious safety risk to the occupants. Photo: Musa Mnyandu
The long suffering residents of Ward 16, mostly elderly pensioners, are elated to finally become rightful owners of the
flats they have been occupying for decades…only most of the flats are now in a state of advanced decay.

IDM commemorates hand washing day By Xpress Reporter
On 15 October 2019, ILembe District Municipality joined the Global Community in commemorating hand washing day. ILembe in partnership with the Department of Health and Unilever headed to Maphumulo where they hosted
Global Hand Washing Day at Nyamazane Primary School. This event was aimed at spreading word of Hygiene and raise awareness to prevent the spread of germs, to mobilize individuals, households, communities, colleagues, friends, schools and health establishments, on
hand washing and hygiene as a proven intervention to curb life threatening preventable diseases, such as diarrhoea. Lifebuoy brand ambassador, author, businesswoman and renowned disc jock Ntombezinhle 'DJ Zinhle' Jiyane was also present at the event.
MAPHUMULO: ILembe District Municipality joined the Global Community in commemorating hand washing day
It's time for Feminist Foreign Policy “This policy consists of three laudable R's: rights, meaning the promotion of women's issues, including by countering genderbased violence and discrimination; representation, including support for women's participation at all levels of decision-making, from parliament to private sector boards to the legal system; and resources, to ensure equitable allocation among people of all genders, whether in government budgets or development
projects,” (Foreignpolicy.com). Indeed, Sweden five-years ago adopted this radical approach and other countries followed. South Africa needs to adopt this policy as the spate of heinous women's rights violations and fatalities calls for this. This approach although radical is holistic at its core and is the kryptonite needed currently and going forward. Gender equality is critical to broader foreign-policy objectives, including economic development, prosperity, and security. Although the African Women's Development Fund was recently granted $7 million (CAD) dollars as part of the Canadian government's Feminist
Councillor’s Corner
International Assistance Policy, if these types of major announcements continue, women's rights organizations could be seen as the most legitimate and effective channels of local development especially in SA. Cllr Vernon Pillay DA Spokesperson KDM Youth, Sport and Gender Portfolio Committee

examinations commence. The initiative of one learner, Micaiah Rajarathnam of Grade 11F, led to an event that is definitely a first for Stanger Manor Secondary School. Micaiah Rajarathnam together with Jeshoran Williams represented all learners and convened a fun filled program that left teachers feeling special. Local Councillor, Jennifer Vallan, the Keynote Speaker, was thrilled and surprised that learners saw the
importance of saying thank you to a team of hard working teachers. A beautiful Appreciation banner is now displayed in the staff room to serve as a reminder to all teachers that their labour of love does not go unnoticed. Teachers and Staff were treated to a lovely meal after the event. Micaiah Rajarathnam and Jeshoran Williams would like to thank all learners and sponsors for their participation and wish all matrics and learners the best in the final exams.

Taking place on October 16 each year, World Spine Day has become a focus in raising awareness of back pain and other spinal issues. World Spine Day highlights the importance of spinal health and wellbeing. Promotion of physical activity, good posture, responsible lifting and healthy working conditions will all feature as people are encouraged to look after their spines and stay active. Spinal disorders, such as back pain, neck pain, scoliosis and disc disease are common, and they can have a profound effect on a person's overall health, impacting a person's ability to work, to enjoy everyday activities, even disrupting healthy sleep patterns. With an estimated one billion people worldwide suffering from back pain, it affects all age groups, from children to the elderly. It is the biggest single cause of disability on the planet, with one in four adults estimated to suffer from back pain during their lives.

Prevention is therefore key and this year's World Spine Day will be encouraging people to take steps to be kind to their spines. Facts about spine disorders: · In recent Global Burden of Disease Study, low back pain ranked highest in terms of disability, and sixth in terms of overall burden. · Up to 80% of people will suffer from back or neck pain during their lives. · 50% of the working population will experience back or neck pain symptoms at least once per year. · Age is one of the most common risk factors for spinal pain, and the greatest effects of population ageing are predicted in low- and middle-income countries. · Back and neck pain is one of the most common reasons for workplace sick leave. The good news is that many of these common problems can be avoided.

BEYOND THE TOUCHLINE The fate of South African cricket hurtles from bad to worse on a weekly basis. A fortnight ago, the Proteas suffered a crushing defeat in the first test by 307 runs despite making more than 400 runs in the first innings and being only about 70 runs behind. But they had already lost the match in the dressing room with the selection of 3 spinners and going into the game with only 2 pace men. The second test that ended over the weekend was none the better. This time the margin of defeat was by an innings, the biggest in test matches between South Africa and India. Again, the Proteas toporder batsmen failed to make an impression against the Indian bowling attack minus injured talisman, Jasprit Bumrah. But replacement U m e s h Ya d a v a n d Mohammed Shami dismantled the SA batting in the first innings and Ravindra Jadeja and Ravchandran Ashwin did so in the second. In both innings
the lower order in total scored more runs than the top order batsmen who failed dismally to stamp their authority. Dean Elgar, after scoring a grinding century in the first test, failed in both innings. Aiden Markram (a pair), Temba Bavuma, Theunis de Bruins and Faf du Plessis hardly troubled the scorers. It was left to Keshav M a h a r a j a n d Ve r n o n Philander with newcomer Senuran Muthusamy to give some respectability to the Proteas scorecard. Maharaj (72) was top-scorer in the first innings and notched his first half-century in test cricket. Muthusamy distinguished himself in the last test by remaining unbeaten in both innings, missing a halfcentury by one in his debut test. This state of affairs should not prevail in a Proteas line-up brimming with batsmen who have the potential to score big. But their shot selection left much to be desired. When well-set, they got themselves out by
becoming impatient rather than imposing a mindset to occupy the crease for long periods. Perhaps it was the heat and the humidity that got to them (as it definitely was not the wicket) that led to their demise but they had enough time to acclimatize to conditions in India. The more backroom staff that the players have to their disposal, the more hopelessly they seem to perform. Perhaps too many confusing signals are coming through and seem to be cluttering the minds of the players. The time has come for an honest appraisal to be made about the state of the Proteas and if heads are to roll, then sooner the better. A big and important series awaits them later in December-January against England and if they are not to lag much behind in the Test Championships, then some drastic measures have to be taken to remedy the situation. Timely intervention is the solution! In the Rugby World Cup,
the group stage is done and dusted and the quarterfinalists have been decided: Japan, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, England, France, Australia and Wales. The only "second tier" nation to have qualified for the knock-out phase is host Japan - much to the relief of all rugby followers. South Africa's date of destiny is this coming Sunday against the team from the "land of the rising sun" - the same team that caused the biggest upset in the last World Cup in 2015 by defeating the Springboks. This time round they meet in the quarter-finals and the home crowd will be hoping for an upset again. Is this possible? In the real world this should not happen as the Springboks are 2-time winners of the prestigious Webb Ellis trophy while Japan has recently entered the realms of international competition. But such is the fanatical support that the home team is receiving that it can lift the morale of even an average team to perform
beyond its capability. And that is what Japan will be hoping for. If the Springboks play anything close to its ability, it should be a victory for one of the favourites. If it's going to be an off-day for some of the key players, then an upset can be on the cards. My heart says Japan but my mind says the Springboks. The outright favourite, the All Blacks, meet Ireland while England play Australia, and France against Wales. An interesting and intriguing weekend awaits us. Last Word. Another wellknown veteran cricketer, shoemaker cum retailer, Vinod Gopal, passed away a week ago after being diagnosed with cancer about a month ago aged 71. Gopal was an all-round sportsman participating in cricket, soccer, tennis and badminton. His main sport was cricket in which he represented the famed Royals CC in its heydays in the late 60s and early 70s. He was a member of the team
t h a t Jayce Singh is a former w o n sports administrator and Patron of the KZNCU t h e prestigious Super League Competition run by the Natal Cricket Board twice in 3 seasons. (1967-68 and 6970). As an opening batsman, he partnered the legendary Jugoo Govender in many a partnership that set the foundation for a big team total. He played soccer for Swans FC as a goalkeeper. But his passion was for walking and was a victor for many years in the popular "Royals Walk" that took place between Stanger (KwaDukuza) and Tinley Manor some 40years ago. Gopal will be sorely missed in KwaDukuza as he was a popular figure in the business world as well as in the community. May his soul rest in peace! Until the next time, a happy sporting week.

Sher starts season with Darts season reaches hat trick screws in the bowling department restricting Dawnheights and bowling them out for 74 in 16 overs, all due to some excellent captaincy by Saieshan Loganathan who used his bowlers masterfully. The pick of Manor bowlers was Ali Sher who was in devastating form with spectacular figures of 4 overs 8 wickets for 9 runs including a hat trick in the last over. Ali seemed to be bowling “grenades” as the Dawnheights batsman seemed dazed and confused at times. The only batsman to reach double figures for Dawnheights was Yousuf Banda with 11 runs. The Manor outfit must be commended for some excellent bowling backed up by brilliant fielding, notably an outstanding one handed, full stretched diving catch by Desigan Pillay to get rid of Indian import S. Chaudry at midwicket of the bowling of R. Mhlongo. Manor won the match by 31 runs.
Man of the match, Ali Sher started of the opening fixture of the iLembe District Cricket Union with a hat trick in their scintillating win with a new youthful Manor Cricket Club over the more fancied KZN Challenge League contenders Dawnheights Cricket Club. Dawnheights, who boasts a host of star cricketers including two Indian nationality professional cricketers, won the toss and asked M a n o r t o b a t . Manor got off to a slow start and lost wickets at regular intervals on a difficult wicket. The top scorers for Manor included, Adesh Bageloo 29, Ali Sher 29 and the new and youthful skipper, Saieshan Loganathan with 16. Manor failed to put runs on the board with rapid pace and were all out in the 20th over and scored a paltry104. However Manor tightened the Ali Sher, man of the match 8 wickets for 9 runs of 4 overs that included a hat trick

Winners of the Red Gold mixed pairs darts championship, Nine Pillay and Yogan Pillay (seated), with runners up, Julian Moonsamy and Devan Govender
The KwaDukuza Darts Association hosted a drawn pairs' competition sponsored by RED GOLD Trading last Wednesday at the Quartz Sports Bar and Conference Centre. The teams were split into two groups with group winners and runners up advancing to the semifinals. In Group 1, the winners were the duo of Julian Moonsamy and Devan Govender who obtained 3 wins from 3 games. Justin Gowtheram and Ajen Singh gained the runner up spot with 1 win from 3 games with a superior point's difference In Group 2 Nine Pillay and Yogan Pillay out did Justin Naidoo and Kevin Govender who both secured semifinal berths. In the semifinal, Julian Moonsamy and Devan Govender came from a leg down to defeat Justin Naidoo and Kevin Govender 2-1 to book their place in the final. Justin Gowtheram and Ajen Singh quickly went one up against the pre match favorites Nine Pillay & Yogan Pillay. The experience
and talents of Nine and Yogan shone through as they rallied back in no time to level the scores 1-1. Some power scores by the 'Pillay twins' proved too much for the less fancied opponents as they went down 2-1. Nine and Yogan quickly got out of the starting blocks to secure leg one in the finals, but Julian and Devan made life very difficult. Leg two was quite evenly contested as both teams threw magnificent darts throughout. Once again, some power scoring and clinical finishing by Nine and Yogan secured the victory and the RED GOLD sponsored mixed pairs competition 2-0. Justin Naidoo recorded 3 x 180 on the night. Tonight, KDDA will continue with the second round of fixtures for the UNL Fresh Produce league. The Quartz take on log leaders Neelan's Auto and Darnall United lock horns with Singh's Fireworks. Games are scheduled to kick off at 7:30pm.
