It is very rare to hear members of the community singing praises for elected councillors. However, wards 16 and 17 councillors, Sanele Mthiyane and Tarzan Naicker, respectively, received much credit from the community last week for their role in finding solutions during a prolonged power outage in many parts of KwaDukuza, including the CBD.
And the praise did not come only from people within their wards. Speaking to the Xpress Times this week, both councillors stressed that being an elected public representative does not restrict one to help only in their particular constituencies.
The two councillors forwent a weekend with their families to be with the suffering communities, doing all they could to ensure restoration of power supply. However they have both been quick to also give credit to Mayor Lindile Nhaca, whom they say
“tasked” the two of them specifically to deal with the crisis.
Cllr Mthiyane also pointed out that many of the local power supply problems were caused by the changes being implemented by the municipality in terms of the working conditions of the employees in that particular business unit. He strongly urged communities to show patience when faced with a similar crisis, but to promptly report the issues to the municipality.
“Of course the problem has been exacerbated by loadshedding. If there is no loadshedding there is no need for constant switching on and off at substations. It's a problem that was not necessarily created by KwaDukuza Municipality. We are dealing with a situation that is beyond our direct control,” stated Cllr Mthiyane.
Naicker and Mthiyane have vowed to continue serving the people to the best of their ability.

Blythedale, Thompson's Bay and Willard beaches obtained the Blue Flag status recently from the Wildlife & Environment Society of
South Africa (WESSA) under the auspices of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).
Mayor Nhaca indicated that KwaDukuza is amongst
thirteen other South African municipalities to have received such recognition and one of two in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.
“KwaDukuza claimed three of the cleanest and safest
beaches within 51 South African sites to have obtained this coveted status. We approach the festive season with confidence knowing that three of KwaDukuza beaches are in the global market, we are stoked and more than ready to host holiday makers from all walks of life.
“I am thrilled about progress that we are making for our people and contributions towards improving the economy of the province. Such accolades are indeed attractive and form part of our long-term goal of repositioning KwaDukuza to become the face of
the province and the preferred tourism destination in the country. This will be achieved by unleashing our strong tourism potential to compete with the rest of the world.
“When I came to office a year ago, one of my priorities was to ensure that KwaDukuza is open for business. We expect more activity along the coastal strip from now until mid-January 2023,” said Mayor Nhaca.
Blue Flag is the world's most prestigious and most recognised symbol awarded to coastal sites and entities. KwaDukuza met a total of 33 international standards across four categories; water quality, provision of decent services, safety & security, and environmental education.

Walking down the Indentured memory lane, out pops the rich memory of Sellan (Chellan) Murugan, who was called to rest in October 1997. Xpress Times met with Chellan's family last week, and our reporter listened to fascinating story of the late Murugan's historical ties with India.
As South Africans of Indian descent today celebrate 162 of Indentured Labourers, Chellan Murugan's last surviving family fondly remember his struggles to reinvent himself from the ashes of apartheid oppression.
The late Chellan Murugan was born on 11 July 1903, in India, specifically in the District of Chingleput (Southern India). He arrived in South Africa in July 1911, aged eight, and started working from the age of 14, employed by Brab Addison in Mbozamo Estate.
The family also recalls that Chellan Murugan was also a devout patron of the then Mbozamo Temple Society.
During his lifetime, Chellan Murugan was lucky to have
visited his home village back in India, where the family says he found only the foundation of what had once been a warm family home. Such is the story of Indentured Labourers, who were uprooted from their home country to come and work the sugarcane fields of Natal.
The majority of Indian South Africans are the descendants of Indentured workers brought to Natal between 1860 and 1911 to develop the sugar industry in this province. In 1911, India prohibited the Indentured labour to Natal because of the ill treatment of its citizens in the Province.
Not all Indians came to Natal as indentured labourers. A large number of Indian traders came to Natal at their own expense. They were referred to as “passengers”. The majority came from the Gujarati region of India. The Indians therefore did not constitute a homogenous group. Whereas most of the indentured

Darnall residents live in fear
The Darnall robots are a major concern to motorists and pedestrians. The Darnall Community Policing Forum members and the members of the community have been complaining to all concerned who are in charge of robots but this was all in vain.
The robots work for 2 months and don't work for 10 months. Many accidents already took place, thank God there were no major injuries and deaths. I am asking, are we waiting for people to die and then repair, are we waiting for one of the ministers that's going to visit KwaDukuza (before) we quickly repair before he or she visits? Is this fair?
As a government are we not worried about the wellbeing of our people? I heard people say that thieves are stealing cables. But my concern is whether it is going to be fixed or not? At the moment there are no points-men at the robots.
Therefore, I am calling on the minister of transport to intervene before we lose innocent lives and also look at the robots in KwaDukuza that are not working.
