KDM assists learners By Xpress Reporter

ince 2012, KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) has delivered over 1200 school uniforms to underprivileged learners from rural schools. Speaking at a special uniform hand-over ceremony on Tuesday, 07 February 2017, KwaDukuza Mayor, Councillor Ricardo Mthembu said, “This is an indication that we have not lost sight of our commitments as government in placing education
within our line of work as a local authority responsible for mainly basic service delivery.” He used the platform to underline the need to improve the schooling system and described why council is taking action to improve primary education. “After taking into consideration the amount of challenges that are facing rural schools and learners in particular; five years ago, council in its view made the necessary changes in a bid to improve on the standard and quality of education
are rolling out the programme, targeting 18 schools and 350
for underprivileged schools. The biggest spirit killer is to see a learner taking to school without shoes. “It is in this sense that we see it fitting to assist those who are unable to provide for basic necessities within our local schools. We adopted the programme in 2012, clearly as one of our flagship projects that is making a significant impact on challenges facing youth and vulnerable children. This year alone we

President Jacob Zuma made his 10th State of The Nation Address on Thursday, 9 February 2017 in Cape Town. As many analysts had predicted, the Economic Freedom Fighters did cause a moment of unrest in parliament disturbing the president from addressing the nation for one hour, accusing him of being a thief that broke his oath of office thus making him a 'constitutional delinquent'. Things turned sour when members of the EFF exchanged blows with security guards who were asked to remove them from the house. Soon after the EFF's ousting, members of the Democratic Alliance voluntarily stepped out of the building also citing that they cannot be addressed by a 'man who disobeys the constitution'. There was a moment of tranquility after the two parties had left, much to the delight of the president whose first word after the chaos was 'Finally'. In his address, Jacob Zuma said the country was on a path to economic revival as indicators show an estimated 1.3% growth for 2017,

however he did lament that it is still too low considering the fact that a larger number of people in the country are unemployed. In relation to unemployment, the president said the focus areas for job creation include industrialisation, mining and beneficiation, agriculture and agro-processing, energy, small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs), managing workplace conflict, attracting investments,
growing the oceans economy and tourism. “We also added crosscutting areas such as science and technology, water and sanitation Infrastructure, transport infrastructure and broadband roll-out,” said Zuma before adding that the much talked about R3500 minimum wage discussions have been concluded. “Our labour-market environment is also showing signs of stability, due to

cooperation by social partners. The manner in which parties conducted and carried themselves during the wage negotiations in the platinum sector in particular, must be applauded. Unity in action was also demonstrated again this week with the conclusion of the agreement on the national minimum wage and on measures to stabilise labour relations. Meanwhile, the first citizen of the country also urged municipalities to take strict measure in a fight against water leakages in this time of drought and further said the government continues to build modern schools, replacing mud structures and other inappropriate buildings through the Accelerated Schools Infrastructure Delivery Initiative in order to give school children dignity while also adding that a total of 173 inappropriate structures have been eradicated since 2011. In total, 895 new schools now provide a conducive l e a r n i n g

environment for our children. The infamous, Life Esidimeni tragedy also took centre stage as the president called for the protection of vulnerable psychiatric patients across the country. Speaking of the year ahead, Zuma laid out the radical s o c i o - e c o n o m i c transformation which is a plan aimed at “fundamental change in the structure, systems, institutions and patterns of ownership, management and control of the economy in favour of all South Africans, especially the poor, the majority of whom are African and female, as defined by the governing party, which makes policy for the democratic government.” Furthermore, Zuma also said the plan to redistribute land to black people will also be at the front this year. “It will be difficult if not impossible; to achieve true reconciliation until the land question is resolved. Only eight million hectares of arable land have been transferred to black people, which is only 9.8% of the 82 million hectares of arable land in South Africa.

DRIVEN: Elite members of the ANCYL in the Greater KwaDukuza region
By Xpress Reporter
ANCYL in the Greater KwaDukuza region happily announced its delight over the appointment of Dr. Musa Madondo as the new Department of Education Director in iLembe. Speaking at a press briefing held at the party's offices on Friday, 10 February 2017, the youth wig's regional secretary Musa Zondi said, “We would like to applaud the Department
of Education in the province of Kwa-Zulu Natal for proving to the general public, how serious they are when it comes to education. “Its decisiveness has been demonstrated by the removal of Thembi Vilakazi who has been battling to match the expected standards. The Department has shown the public that it is not about individuals but in the interest of learners who are the future of this country.” As part of their quest to
betterment of education in our region, the ANCYL also urged law enforcement authorities to detain all learners in school uniforms who are found wandering in towns, strolling and sitting in areas such as restaurants and taverns during school hours. “Young people should at all times be in class during school hours and at no stage where they must be seen gallivanting around towns and parks during school hours. We further
propose that learners must have a letter of approval from school principals permitting them to be in any space whilst classes are in session, even if they leave school early,” further commented Zondi before adding that this should be a norm in schools across this region. Furthermore, the ANCYL also announced plans to convene an Education Alliance Summit soon.

Local politicians talk SONA By Xpress Reporter
Local politicians have responded to last week's state of the nation address by President Jacob Zuma. With all the highs and lows that happened on that one faithful night, there seems to be mixed reactions around the state of our nation. Musa Zondi ANCYL Regional Secretary “We are happy, we welcome the state of the nation address, because he eluded to what also affects us the most which is the issue of education. We know that we are battling to fund education in our nation. Firstly, we welcome the financial injection that will be increased. Secondly, the issue of land, we want the majority of people in South Africa which is black people to benefit from the economy. With the issue of land the government is moving in the right direction, because you can't talk about the economy and not talk about redistribution of land” Cllr. E M Kolia Al Jama-Ah KwaDukuza “The extreme shows of force and physical blows accompanying the state of the nation address indicate just how

low South Africa has sunk. It becomes very difficult to speak of 'Radical economic transformation' when the president himself is undermining the economy and the minister of finance Pravin Gordhan consistently. The economy is still not growing fast enough to create jobs we desperately need. The president in his speech failed to mention state-owned enterprises, many of these have financial burdens on their fiscus and there's little prospect of turning them to sustained profitability. South African airways is one of those examples that come to mind. Finally, we would like to thank the president for reiterating his support for the Palestinian course as this year marks the 50th year anniversary of the occupation of Palestine”
Cllr. Madhun Sobram Sing DA Caucus Leader “On the social radical economic transformation institutional amendments are required to bear fruit, it could take a while through policies driving the transformation agenda on various fronts with monitoring and evaluation on regular basis once policies are implemented. On land issue we have a skewed ownership patterns which must change so that more land is productive through skills training and development. Of great concern is 90 % of land claimants prefer money over land thus frustrating the process regarding ownership. More educational programmes must be put in place on choices that have long lasting solutions to land ownership that is sustainable and contribute to the economic growth which is struggling below 1%. We cannot change the direction of the ship BUT at least we can adjust the sails and save our country where freedom, fairness and opportunity thrive for its entire people”

KwaDukuza's Chief Fire Officer, Nonhlanhla Mkhwanazi is among the women in the area that holds a high position in the community safety sector. Xpress Times had a one on one with her to find out more about her job, her aspirations and day to day routine as the chief fire officer. She was among the public safety servants that were honoured by the Mayor of KwaDukuza, Ricardo Mthembu for her excellence. What drove you into the fire department and what do you enjoy the most about your job? I listened to my instincts and joined the gymnasium. After being subjected to the physical test I was then subjected to the psychometric test. I was deemed competent and that encouraged me in realizing my dream of being a fire fighter. What excited me the most was the fact that I was able to prove that man and women are basically equal since I was the only female amongst thousands of applicants who was found competent. What does a chief fire officer do? Responding to emergencies, conducting fire risk assessments, advising fire engineers on numerous technical issues, writing reports to Council, issue prohibition notices prior on irregularities identified during inspections and follow up with owners on progress made thereof, assist industries and high risk occupancies in the execution of emergency drills, conducting in depth analysis on accident causation model, monitoring staff training needs and the identification of critical and scare skills in line with the approved personal development plans and motivate for more budget to realize their needs to ensure co mpliance with Skills Development Act, ensure the
implementation of fire awareness campaigns to vulnerable communities, schools and public institutions with a view to reduce number of fire incidents. What challenges do you face, especially since you are a woman? Initially the challenges were related to taking commands from female a officer although we were highly disciplined and semi militant most of the long serving males did not accept the fact that they should take commands and instructions from me as a female officer or be faced with disciplinary measures in terms of insubordination. What is your message to the people of KwaDukuza? Saving people's lives from threats of fires, wreckages on roadways and IN HER ZONE: KwaDukuza Chief Fire Officer, Nonhlanhla Mkhwanazi risking our lives by entering burning buildings when everyone else is running out‌comes with a lot of passion. MEC calls for High rates, poor service for probe into fatal Oceanview crash By Xpress Reporter
By Xpress Reporter
The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Mxolisi Kaunda, has ordered a full investigation into the fatal road crash that occurred on the N2 in Mandeni in the early hours of Monday morning. Three vehicles, including a SUV, a bakkie and a light motor vehicle collided on the N2 Mandeni Bridge, killing five people on the scene while four others were seriously injured. Kaunda has conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished those in hospital a speedy recovery. “I have asked the Department's Road Traffic Inspectorate and the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to this horror crash,” said Kaunda. He said that the crash occurred a few days after the Department tabled a report to cabinet on the outcome of the festive season road safety campaign, which indicated
that KwaZulu-Natal registered an 18% increase in road crashes and fatalities in 2016. Kaunda said that such statistics are a cause for major concern and call for a radical action among all those charged with a responsibility of road safety and the people of KwaZuluNatal in general, because road safety is a collective responsibility. He has assured the people of KwaZulu-Natal that the high visibility of traffic officers that was witnessed during the festive season will continue throughout the year to ensure that the number of road crashes and fatalities are reduced. He has asked the Head of Department of Transport, Mr. Sibusiso Gumbi and the Mayor of KwaDukuza, Councillor Ricardo Mthembu to visit the families of the deceased and those who are in hospital to establish what assistance government can provide to the families during this difficult time.
Oceanview residents in KwaDukuza are furious over the recent electricity outages in their area and 'pathetic' state of their sub-station which is situated in Hill Crescent. On Wednesday, the first day of this month, the area suffered a power cut from 6h30am and it lasted until midday. According to one of the citizens in the area, numerous complaints have been submitted to the municipality but the issue is yet to be dealt with. Oceanview is among the high rate-paying communities in
KwaDukuza. According to one of the dwellers, residents would like the Mayor to do an inspection of the 'pathetic' state of their sub-station and also get the necessary department to secure the substation by fencing it. Furthermore, Oceanview is not the only community that recently suffered from electricity outages as the business community in KwaDukuza CBD is also crying foul over this ordeal. Xpress Times tried to contact the municipality in order to find out what is the real problem behind these outages so that we can be in a

what is going on, however the two emails sent to them were not responded to.

Sciatica and its Reflexology Treatment Sciatic nerve happens to be the longest nerve in our body. It starts from our spinal cord in the lower back and passes down through the hip into the back area of the lower leg. When we say 'Sciatica' we refer to the pain in this sciatic nerve. As this nerve passes down through the pelvis, hip and to the lower leg, the sciatica pain whenever it occurs, is felt in the areas through which it passes. This nerve controls many muscles of the lower leg and also controls the sensation of thigh, leg and feet. Pain that travels from the lower back or from the hip through the back part of the thigh to the lower part of the leg or to the foot is usually very indicative of sciatica. Sciatica pain can range from a simple dull ache to severe electric like shocks. The pain can at times be so severe that the patient may
hardly be able to move out of bed. Usually patients complain of pain while walking or standing but at times reverse of this happens, the pain is worse while lying down in a normal sleeping or lying posture and the patient has no other option other than to stand or walk or lie in certain uncomfortable posture. Patients with sciatica may suffer from additional symptoms such as numbness and weakness along the course of nerve, tingling and pins and needles feeling (mostly in the foot or toes). Sciatica is not a disease in itself but a symptom of the sciatic nerve being irritated or compressed ('pinched' as one may call it in layman's language) along its course. The most common place for this to occur is the lower part of the spine where the nerve roots of the sciatic
nerve are compressed by a prolapsed (slipped) disc. Pinching of the nerve due to a disc prolapse is the most common cause. Other medical conditions including trauma to the spine, spinal tumors, and spondylolisthesis (slipping of one vertebra over the other) and lumbar vertebra canal stenosis can cause sciatica. Reflexology as a natural system of treatment offers distinct advantages to the people who suffer from sciatica. The biggest advantage that reflexology offers is that it is able to treat the pain very effectively and is able to rectify the compression or irritation on the sciatic nerve. Another great benefit of using reflexology is that along with the treatment of sciatica, reflexology also aims at strengthening the patient's constitution in order to prevent further recurrences.

Stanger Primary prioritises development By Xpress Reporter
Recycling, beautiful gardens, creativity and discipline are the order of the day at Stanger Primary as the school is a far cry from what it used to be. Principal, Ms MC Williamson is determined to continue on the path of improvement, and create opportunities for learners to grow and flourish. Commenting on the radical changes and ongoing facelift of the school, Williamson said that the aim is to create an atmosphere that is conducive to teaching and learning. “We've got to create the ambience for the children. The aesthetics of the school has improved and there's an aura of calmness,” she said. Walking through the school corridors, one is sure to notice the creative work done by the learners on display, as well as photos of the 'Learner of the Week' and 'Educator of the Month'. “All murals at the school are informative, and children's work is displayed as well. Children are celebrated for being outstanding and given opportunities to be outstanding at something,” said Williamson. The prefabs have been

has changed at Stanger Primary School as they pledge to “avoid the soft option and to rise up.” “I'm very clear in my mind about what I want the school to be. Our vision is to ensure that each and every learner leaves our institute functionally literate and holistically developed,” said Williamson. The Principal, staff and learners of Stanger Primary School expressed their gratitude to the Xpress Times and Ostrinex Signs for the sponsorship of new signage boards placed at strategic points at the school. During a visit to the school, Ahmed Desai of Xpress Times and Neil Singh of Ostrinex Signs were in awe of the potential shown by the learners.

Suicide prevention Suicide is an act of intentionally causing one's own death. Reasons for suicides include mental, physical and personality disorders, alcoholism and drugs, relationship difficulties, financial difficulties, social problems, emotional blackmail, involvement in criminal activities, failure, disappointments, threats and bullying. Those that attempted suicide previously are at higher risk of future suicides. Suicides have taken the lives of many people in our community. Hopelessness seems to be the leading factor in many suicidal cases. People who have suicidal thoughts cannot see anything positive about their lives. They do not realize their capabilities and worth as individuals. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. 1 of every 10 deaths in our country is as a result of suicides. These statistics are scary but suicides can be prevented if you know what signs to look for and what to do. Suicide should not be a secret. Signs and Symptoms of suicides include: Changes in eating and sleeping habits, spending less time with family and friends, express their preference to be left alone and excessive feelings of guilt, dramatic weight loss, evidence of alcohol and drug abuse, mood swings-anger, aggression, violence, withdrawn, depression, loss of interest in school work and extracurricular activities, talking about death and cutting themselves, unusual neglect of
personal appearance, joking about suicides and writing poems or essays about suicide. One of the first steps to suicide prevention is to recognize suicidal behaviors in adults and teenagers. It is important to be involved in a teenager's life, so that you can recognize when behavior seems a little abnormal and prone to teen depression or teen suicide. One of the most important aspects of teen suicide prevention is support. The teenager needs to know that he/she is loved and supported. They need to know that they will be helped to find hope in life again. The most effective suicide prevention programs consist of identifying and treating the following problems: Mental and learning disorders, substance abuse problems, problems dealing with stress and behavior problems (controlling, aggressive and impulsive behavior). Social Workers and psychologists can provide emotional support and help teenagers develop skills to deal with their problems to prevent suicidal thoughts. A small amount of prevention can go a long way. With support from family, friends and professionals, those who consider suicide can be restored to a healthier path of development. Dube was hospitalized and discharged three days later. Emmanuel Mhlongo (34) appeared in court on Monday. He is due before court this week for a bail consideration.

Desai leads United to emphatic victory S. Desai scored 37 to lead United Cricket Club to an emphatic 52 run victory over high riding Morningside Cricket Club in an iLembe and District Cricket Union T20 clash last Saturday at the Country Club grounds. Morningside won the toss and elected to field first. The skipper's decision seemed to be ideal choice on a good batting crease. Levan Moodley cleaned bowled prolific opener, A.
Sarwar for a royal duck with the score still at 0. Alveiro Nadasen was joined by I. Mohammed at the crease with Nadasen playing unusually cautious. Mohammed was the more aggressive of the two as he made a quick-fire 14 (3 boundaries) before he was bowled by M. Mhlongo with the score on 15. Untied lost wickets at regular intervals with Z. Ali and Y. Ismail contributing 11 and 12

respectively. In walks in Desai and together with Nadasen, showed scant respect for the bowlers, upping the tempo. Nadasen scored 32 that included just 3 boundaries and a massive 6 before he was stumped by wicket keeper R. Naidoo. Desai contributed 37 with 4 boundaries and a huge 6. United made 141/9 in their allotted 20 overs. Moodley was the most successful bowler for
Morningside claiming 4 wickets 35 runs in 4 overs. R. Devcharan claimed 2 whilst Mhlongo got 1. Morningside never go into the game with L. Rampersad (12), N. Ngabane (22), Jody Chetty (11) and M. Oubalan (16) getting amongst the runs. Morningside 89 in the 17th over. Z. Methar was the most successful bowler claiming 4 wickets with A. Ismail claiming 3.
Home ground advantage did nothing to steer iLembe Cricket Club to victory as they slumped to their second consecutive defeat, this time to visiting DHS Rhythm in a KZN Cricket Union Challenge League (stream I) league game played at the Country Club grounds this past Sunday. iLembe batted first on a good Country Club pitch. Openers, S. Dlamini and A. Sarwar put on a decent partnership of 31 before Dlamini was victim to a R. Moses lbw in the 7th over. After a promising start the wheels came off as the next 6 wickets fell cheaply for 41 runs after 17 overs. DHS captain A.H. Razak was spinning his web around the very fragile iLembe batsmen as they found runs
tough to come by. The last 3 wickets fell also for 41 as iLembe were skittled out for a mediocre 113 in 27 overs. Razak was the stand out bowler with top figures of 6/33 from 9 overs. In reply DHS openers, K. Reddy and Razak were in a real hurry as they put on a quick fire 52 in 7 overs before Reddy was caught by Z. Ali for 21. Razak continued on his merry way as he smashed the weak iLembe bowling attack to all parts of country club, taking his side home with a brilliant 86* (ten 4's,five 6's). DHS finished with 117/1 in 13.2 with Razak deservedly named man of the match. DHS Rhythm emphatically won by 9 wickets.

We know yet... We know domestic workers are our equals yet we see them We know we eat 3 meals a day yet we feed our domestic workers less We know they travel to us daily yet we don’t reimburse them We know they have families like us yet we pay them a penance We know, working eight hours for us tedious enough yet we expect more from them We know how little, a few hundreds will take us yet we expect it to last them We know eating from plastic and enamel is awkward, yet we serve them We know walking without shoes is unclean, yet we expect them to leave theirs at the door We know yet we need reminding

Qwabe United urging close to top spot
Qwabe United players warming up before their encounter against Groutville Citizens
Qwabe United continued to do well in the SAB iLembe Region Football Association following a comprehensive 3-2 victory over Groutville Citizens on Saturday afternoon at KwaDukuza Recreational Grounds.
United won the highly contested encounter, courtesy of a hat trick from their talisman Justice Kabini. Things seem to be going well for the KwaDukuza outfit as they currently sit second on the log standings with two
games in hand. On the other side of the spectrum, FC Thembeni and Tigers are still struggling to shake off their bad luck and get into winning ways as they are currently occupying the two most bottom spots on the log.
Meanwhile Tigers woes continued on Sunday when they were held to a goalless draw by Nkobongo Matrix this past Sunday. There was a fierce battle at midfield but the live-wire and diminutive Themba Luma from Matrix had the better of the exchanges distributing the ball with relative ease with both sets of defenders standing tall and thwarting the efforts. Tigers had the best chance in the 42nd minute but his powerful shot was brilliantly saved by Nkobongo's goal
Nkobongo Matrix hold Tigers to a draw
stopper, Siphelele Ngatha. The draw did little from stopping tigers from
improving their standing away from the relegation zone.
