SONA 2021, Ramaphosa focuses on economy recovery SONA: President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered his State of the Nation Address in Parliament on 11 February 2021.

President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered his fifth State of the Nation Address in parliament on Thursday night, addressing matters on vaccine rollouts, corruption, renewable energy procurement, Covid-19 relief grant extensions. The much-anticipated address was attended by a limited number of MPs while others joined virtually. The president talked tough on corruption, stating that the implementation of the national anti-corruption strategy will soon be under way with the appointment of the members of the anticorruption advisory council. Ramaphosa also announced the extension of some Covid-19 grant relief measures, namely the Temporary Employer/Employee Relief Scheme (Ters) and the R350 unemployment social grant for a further three months. Ramaphosa said the phase of vaccination programme, which is targeted at health and other frontline workers, will now use the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which has been shown to be effective against the 501Y.V2 variant, “We have secured 9 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The first batch, of 80,000 doses, will arrive in the country next week. Further consignments will arrive over the next four weeks, totalling 500,000 Johnson & Johnson vaccines. All provinces have rollout plans in place as the first vaccines come through. I wish to thank all provinces for their level of preparedness for this massive undertaking that we are about to embark upon. In addition, we have secured 12 million vaccine doses from the global COVAX facility. This will be complemented by other vaccines that are available to

South Africa through the AU's African Vaccine Acquisition Task Team facility as well. Pfizer has committed 20 million vaccine doses commencing with deliveries at the end of the first quarter. V11 7 We are continuing our engagements with all the vaccine manufacturers to ensure that we secure sufficient quantities of vaccines that are suitable to our conditions. The health and safety of our people remains our paramount concern. All medication imported into the country is monitored, evaluated, investigated, inspected and registered by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority,' said President Ramaphosa. Over the past year, South Africa has experienced a sharp decline in growth and a significant increase in unemployment, President said poverty is on the rise and equality is deepening, “In the third quarter of 2020, our economy was 6% percent smaller than it was in the last quarter of 2019. There were 1.7 million fewer people employed in the third quarter of 2020 than there were in the first quarter, before the pandemic struck. Our unemployment rate now stands at a staggering 30.8%. As a result of the relief measures that we implemented and the phased reopening of the economy, we expect to see a strong recovery in employment by the end of 2020. As we worked to contain the spread of the virus, we also had to take extraordinary measures to support ordinary South Africans, assist businesses in distress and protect people's livelihoods. The social and economic relief package that we introduced in April last year is the largest intervention

of its kind in our history. It identified measures worth a total of R500 billion or about 10% of our GDP to provide cash directly to the poorest households, to provide wage support to workers and to provide various forms of relief to struggling businesses. A total of 18 million people, or close to one-third of the population, received additional grant payments through these relief measures,” added Ramaphosa. Opposition parties have described President Cyril Ramaphosa's fifth State of the Nation Address (Sona) as out of touch and out of ideas. The DA's John Steenhuisen characterised Ramaphosa's speech as 'the good, the bad and the ugly'; praising him for continuing the COVID-19 relief grants but coming down hard on economic reforms which were yet to reach Parliament. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) described the speech as insanity, arguing that the president was doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results. The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP)'s Mkhulekwa Hlengwa agrees that there was little that was new or inspiring to Ramaphosa's speech, though the party did welcome some of the interventions, “We have heard these things before. It doesn't feel like a pitch for a president who was campaigning for re-election whilst actually in government,” said Hlengwa.

Concerns over COVID-19 regulations at KwaDukuza Home Affairs Chaos and long queues have sparked fears for health and safety for Home Affairs workers and residents as long queues pose virus threat. In the past week and this week Home Affairs Offices in KwaDukuza have experienced a large number of beneficiaries queuing to access services. Businesses have expressed their concerns, citing that the long queues are a danger to the health and safety of the people because there is no social distancing, which potentially increases the risk of contracting the coronavirus. the system is always down, “The sad thing about this Home Affairs is that their system is always down now. Instead of standing in a line we ended up sitting on the pavement. Hence you find us all sitting close to each other. We want to be closer to the door so we can hear when the staff comes out to talk to us,” said the irate resident. KwaDukuza SAPS communications officer Priya Nunkumar said Kwadukuza SAPS have been conducting regular patrols in the Kwadukuza CBD and have been ensuring that social distancing protocols are being followed.

Manager at Home Affairs in KwaDukuza Dion Monsamy said they're concerned over long queues and due to lockdown regulations only a certain number of people is allowed inside, “We have no control over this situation, people refuse to social distance. When they come inside our offices we can control it but on the queue we can't,” said Dion. He added that they try to monitor the situation, inform people on the importance of social distancing and call law enforcement to assist. Sihle Dube pointed fingers at Home Affairs, stating that

TOLLAGATE: MOST toll road fees including e-tolls to increase in March.

Travelling on toll roads will cost motorists more from March 1 due to an annual national increase in fees. From March 1, it will cost Class 1 vehicles R14, 50 to pass through Umvoti toll. The Transport Minister has confirmed that most toll roads in South Africa will experience a price hike, starting from the first minute of Monday 1 March 2021. The increase, which also extends to the controversial e-tolls network in Gauteng, will come into effect in just over two weeks' time. The changes, which were gazetted on Thursday, slipped under the radar yesterday, as all eyes were on Cyril Ramaphosa. He delivered a very differentlooking State of the Nation Address. But, like he's done at his most recent SONAs, the president completely overlooked the thorny issues of e-tolls. Here's how much you will have to pay in the North Coast Toll Roads from March: King Shaka Airport Ramp (Class 1=R6, 50, Class 2= R13, 00, Class 3= R20, 00, Class 4= R27, 00), uThongathi mainline (Class 1= R12, 50, Class 2= R25, 00, Class 3= R33,00, Class 4= R48, 00), Mvoti mainline (Class 1= R14, 50, Class 2= R41,00, Class 3= R55, 00, Class 4= R82, 00), Mandini Ramp (Class 1= R8,00, Class 2= R15, 00, Class 3= R18,00, Class 4= R24,00), Dokodweni Ramp (Class 1= R21,50, Class= R42, 00, Class 3= R48, 00, Class 4= R66, 00) Mtunzini Mainline (Class 1= R50, 00, Class 2= R96, 00, Class 3= R114, 00, Class 4= R170), Mtunzini Ramp (s) (Class 1= R41,50, Class 2= R78, 00, Class 3= R93, 00, Class 4= R135, 00) and Mtunzini Ramp (n) (Class 1= R9, 00, Class 2= R18, 00, Class 3= R21, 00, Class 4= R36, 00). 2021 Comrades Marathon cancelled Covid-a9 has claimed another massive sporting event, this time in the form of the Comrades Marathon that has been cancelled for the second year in succession. The centenary edition of the race was due to be held on June 13 but last Wednesday was cancelled by the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA). The 2020 down-run that was going to be defended by Bong'musa Mthembu was also cancelled, but unlike this year, a very late call was made with regards to the non-hosting of the race. The race is going to celebrate 100 years of existence on May 24, with the first race taking place on that date in 1921. The race is the largest and oldest ultra-marathon in the world. The CMA cited, among other things, that an impending third wave of the deadly respiratory virus expected to impact South Africa from

around April to June made the hosting of the race impractical. The ongoing second wave and a significantly more infectious variant of Covid-19 also played a role in the cancellation of the race. The CMA board said in a statement that they have been in consultation with Athletics South Africa, KwaZulu-Natal Athletics and the National Coronavirus Command Council with regards to the feasible hosting of the race. CMA chairperson Cheryl Winn said the early cancellation of the race was not only made with the health and welfare of athletes and officials in mind, but also the avoidance of committing resources to an event that may not take place. The CMA said that a virtual race will be held on June 13 while the organisation's 100-year activities will commence on May 24.

Bukayo Saka believes Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has struck the right balance between youth and experience. Arteta has not been afraid to back his young talent over more established names and he did so again in Sunday's 4-2 Premier League win over Leeds. Captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's hat-trick grabbed the headlines with Hector Bellerin also on the score sheet at the Emirates Stadium before the visitors rallied and halved the deficit through Pascal Struijk and Helder Costa. But there good performances from Arsenal's precocious talents as Saka and Emile Smith Rowe both claimed assists and full debutant Martin Odegaard

looked good at times. The likes of club-record signing Nicolas Pepe, summer recruit Willian and striker Alexandre Lacazette were only among the substitutes as Saka hailed Arteta for keeping faith with the less experienced members of his squad. “It's perfect,” the England international replied when asked about Arteta picking young players alongside the likes of Aubameyang and David Luiz. “Because as a young player you get experience around you and people to guide you when things aren't going well. They give you confidence, instructions and things like that. I just feel like he (Arteta) has got the right balance for us at the moment.” Aubameyang's first hat-trick came on his return to the side, having not started any of his previous five games after leaving Arsenal's Covid secure bubble to visit his ill mother. “ H e i s amazing, I can't speak highly enough of him,” Saka said of the striker. “He s h o w e d

everyone how much quality he has, when he gets the chance, he is going to put it away. He can do everything, so we are so happy to have him and it's good that he got a hat-trick for his confidence. We have a big week ahead and we hope he can score some more goals for us. The last two games we lost, but I thought we were quite unlucky. So, to get this one over the line, get win, it sets us up for quite a tough week and gives us a lot of confidence going into the games.” Leeds threatened a memorable comeback after Struijk and Costa made their mark, the latter one of the two substitutes made by manager Marcelo Bielsa at halftime. Speaking after the game Bielsa bemoaned a poor first half but felt his side had the better game after the interval. Struijk, whose powerful header brought his first goal for the club, revealed Bielsa had called for more energy during his half-time team talk. “We didn't bring the energy we always bring, so it's a bit disappointing we didn't do that,” he said. “The majority of what was said was to bring the energy back, and then the football will come. It's such a difference when we do that, our football is so much better. It means a lot to me to score my first goal but it's just disappointing that we lost the game.”
