Local councillor survives assassination attempt By Xpress Reporter

local IFP Councillor was shot while travelling with his wife and child in KwaDukuza yesterday, 16 July 2019. It is alleged that the family escaped with minor injuries, after assailants fired multiple shots at the car. According to KZN SAPS Spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane, at 07:00, the victim was travelling on the N2 freeway towards KwaDukuza with his family when he was attacked by unknown suspects. “They fired shots towards them and they sustained injuries. An eleven-year-old child sustained injury on the leg and the victim was injured on the neck. Circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated. Charges of attempted murder will be opened by KwaDukuza SAPS.” KwaDukuza Municipality Acting

Mayor, Councillor Dolly Govender released a statement saying: “Today we awoke to the sad news that Councillor Aubrey Baardman, who represents the IFP, had been shot. We are not yet aware of the thorough details which may have led to this atrocious act. “Information at our disposal is that when he had been shot, he was able to drive to one of the municipal offices, Lavoipierre Building. Luckily, his condition was not critical at the time he arrived at Lavoipierre. It can also be confirmed that he was travelling with his wife and child. His wife was also shot in the process. The KwaDukuza Municipality Crime Prevention Unit officers immediately escorted the Baardmans to a local hospital. Further details on this incident will be shared once local SAPS has concluded its investigation on the matter.”

Local actor stars in hit movie By Xpress Reporter

42-year-old actor, Amith Sing of KwaDukuza has turned his dream into a reality. Sing, who stars in the movie Kings of Mulberry Street, says that a career in acting has been a lifelong desire. “My entire life, I wanted to be an actor and always mentioned to my parents that if Spielberg or Cameron (Directors: Jurassic Park and Titanic respectively), would offer me a ten second role where I would just have to hold a light post in the scene and there would be no pay but just food and shelter provided, I would quit my job and accept their offer. “My grandfather, together with my father and uncles created a mobile cinema named Broadway Talkies in the 70's/80's and showed Indian movies to the communities around Natal in the apartheid era. Years later, when the video machine and VHF touched the shores of South Africa, my family opened up Broadway Video Inn. So my thought is, the film industry was in my bloodline,” he said. Back in 2016, Sing was in an accident resulting in a broken jaw, broken nose, as well as a lacerated eye and lip. “As crazy as it may sound, the accident turned out to be my lucky charm or someone above pointing me in the right direction. After that, I got to meet Judy Naidoo, the director, writer and producer who decided to take a chance on me.

“Basically, Kings of Mulberry Street is about two boys from different social backgrounds that team up to take down the local community gangster, forming more of a friendship made up of trust

between family and emotions which leads them to an adventure that every audience would like to be a part of or relate to imaginary - or at some point, reality.” Sing said that the role involved him putting on weight a n d changing his up stance posture. “I also

got to meet other talented artists in the industry with the likes of another Stangerite, Kimberly Arthur who is a part of the cast of Kings of Mulberry Street. “Thanks to Judy Naidoo, I had found my ten seconds of achievement when she cast me in the Kings of Mulberry Street. So to all out there who are hoping, wishing and trying never stop. Faith will have its way eventually. As the saying goes, 'Aim for the moon. If you miss, at least you land amongst the stars.'”

Suspect arrested for kidnapping By Xpress Reporter

Last week, numerous reports were made on social media regarding a male in a Toyota Camry who was allegedly accosting and robbing women in KwaDukuza. It is alleged by social media users that the suspect robbed various women of their cellphones after giving them a lift or approaching them on the pretence of wanting to know the time. The victims were threatened with weapons before being robbed. On Thursday, 11 July 2019, Kegan Govender

(21) was apprehended, after he was positively identified in a kidnapping case which occurred on Wednesday, 10 July 2019. It is alleged that the suspect, together with his friend, stopped a 19-year-old female outside the KwaDukuza Library, pulled out a firearm and forced the victim towards the suspect's motor vehicle, and forced her into the car. According to KwaDukuza SAPS, the suspect drove the car in the KwaDukuza area, while the suspect's friend threatened the victim and sexually assaulted her in the backseat of the vehicle. “The suspect and his friend robbed the victim of her cellphone and dropped her off in the CBD. It is alleged that the suspect and his friend have been targeting women walking alone in KwaDukuza and robbing them of their cellphones. The suspect has been charged by KwaDukuza SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offense (FCS) Unit. He is charged for Kidnapping, Armed Robbery, and Sexual Assault. The suspect has appeared in KwaDukuza Magistrates' Court on 15 July 2019, and will remain in police custody as bail was denied.” KwaDukuza SAPS Acting Station Commander Colonel M.N Novandla commended all those involved in the arrest of the suspect. “Members of the KwaDukuza SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offense (FCS) Unit will leave no stone unturned to ensure that suspects are arrested for their wrongdoings”, said Novandla.

On Monday night, a number of irate Townview residents burned tyres and barricaded roads in the area, demanding that KwaDukuza Municipality provides free electricity. The protest came after a series of

power outrages that has been going on for the last few months. One of the concerned citizens said it's disturbing that the municipality cannot work towards providing the basic need. “This has been an ongoing problem for two months now. These daily outages last for about

3 hours, and this is damaging some of our household items. We complain to officials, to no avail,” said the resident. It's alleged that power outages that plague the area of Townview is mainly caused by people who steal electricity.

Suspects arrested at Mandeni taxi rank Police responded swiftly to a taxi related incident that was reported recently at the Mandeni Taxi Rank. According to KZN SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, this was a cause for concern from the local community and people using the taxi rank. A number of police officers were deployed to the taxi rank to stabilise the situation and bring peace in the area. “Police officers from the Ilembe Cluster conducted an intelligence driven operation at the taxi rank following up on information with regards to illegal firearms. The police officers spotted a vehicle fitting the same description given to them at the rank with three occupants. “The said vehicle was stopped and searched. Radha Roopsingh Primary School in Etete was in the spotlight over the last few months following reports of unhygienic facilities. Ex learner, Vinothan Reddy nominated the school in the Woolworth's My School My Village My Planet, fortunately the school was one of 21 institutions that was a recipient of a R100 000 donation. The main objective of the donation was to be used for

renovating the toilets and reform the school's sewer system. The Deputy Principal C. L. Naidoo cited that the refurbishment of the facilities will give the school the dignity it deserves. “I'm delighted to announce that the project that broke ground on the 24th June is now completed. The existing toilets were revamped and an additional toilet was added for the boys and one for the girls. There are now 6 boys' and 6 girls' fully

functional toilets available for learners to use. Sewage will now drain into a septic tank without any spills on the playground.” “As a sponsorship to the school, Mr Pillay erected an additional toilet for female educators. On behalf of the school I would once again express our sincere thanks to My school My Village My Planet for the donation which we received to renovate our existing ablution blocks for our learners,” he added.

The youthful Heights Volleyball Club, under the astute eyes of veteran Neren 'Bob' Reddy and Sandhir 'Tin Boy' Jugmohan, put on a stellar performance to outsmart Glenhills, under Moola, in the KwaDukuza Volleyball Association league game played last Thursday. The game proved a humdinger with both teams fielding young and upcoming players which bode well for the survival of volleyball in KwaDukuza. Other teams need to take heed of these two teams and take on youngsters at their clubs to ensure volleyball is alive and kicking Jubilant Heights in another few years time. They matched each other in every department whilst the lead changed on several occasions. It was Heights that drew first blood winning the tightly contested set 26-24.
