Press release Ricardo Mthembu weighs in on KwaDukuza Mall crime in KwaDukuza acts on By Xpress Reporter
The KwaDukuza Office of the KwaZulu Natal Parliamentary Constituency Office led by Ricardo Mthembu held a meeting last week Friday, 13 March to discuss challenges that plague the town, mainly crime. A number of Government institutions together with stakeholders graced the gathering, presented measures that need to be put in place to combat crime that drive away investors continuously. During the meeting it came to light that over the past few years KwaDukuza has seen rising levels of crime, it is an issue that affects everyone. Former KwaDukuza Municipality Mayor, Mthembu did not mince his words when he stated that drug dealers are wreaking havoc in town as law enforcement is nowhere to be seen especially near King Shaka Museum. “I don't have a sense that KwaDukuza is serious about eradicating crime. People no longer have confidence in Government due to the high rising number of crime. Crime in town drives away investors, we need to engage each other as Government institutions to find applicable solutions,” said Mthembu. Disturbingly high levels of illicit drug use remains a problem among schools in ILembe District. The Department of Education in ILembe revealed that it is working with law enforcement to eradicate and prevent
Coronavirus Pandemic
KWADUKUZA: Ricardo Mthembu speaking on Friday at Town Hall during a meeting aimed at finding solutions to curb crime in KwaDukuza
the scourge of crime in schools. KwaDukuza SAPS Station Commander Brigadier S.F Mhlongo said SAPS need community to eliminate crime in the CBD and in communities. “Criminals are known but people don't want to bring them to justice. We invite our people to join us
in fighting this scourge,” said Mhlongo. In conclusion Mthembu pleaded with Government Institutions and stakeholders to have another meeting where they will be blunt about crime and work on finding solutions without pointing fingers.
Heeding the call by President Cyril Ramaphosa for shopping centres to put into place hygienic practices to ensure they lessen the risk of the spread of the virus. The mall and it's tenants have placed Hand sanitizers at - All mall entrances - All ablution passages - In various positions in the mall walkways - Installed the WHO posters behind all ablution doors and wash stations -The tenants have been asked to place sanitizers at the door of their shops. The Restaurants have increased their level of hygiene ensuring that tables are thoroughly sanitized after each use. - The cleaning staff have been trained to sanitize all surfaces, door handles and seats. - Tenant trolleys are also being wiped down with sanitizers on a very regular
basis. - We have educated service providers (security and cleaning) on how to identify any potential cases and immediately follow the isolation procedure. - Service providers have also been trained on the importance of washing hands and sanitizing religiously as they come into contact with many people during the day. Registers have been put into place, in case we have any cases reported, we will know exactly who the people are and who they were in contact with via our security surveillance systems. Vee Mazambani, the mall manager has advised shoppers to strictly adhere to the best hygiene practices which is in their best interest. It's the proactive actions of each one of us that will ensure that the virus is eliminated speedily.

your health care provider about additional steps you may be able to take to protect yourself. Ms Peggy Nkonyeni assured the public that Government is doing everything in their power to maintain the spread and that panic is not an option. “Infected people are encouraged to seek medical help. However, infected patients can also be asymptomatic, meaning they do not display any symptoms despite having the virus in their systems,” said Gumede. He further urged religious leaders to play a role in educating the public about the coronavirus. Here are top recommended steps to follow to stop the spread of Covid 19: Clean your hands often, avoid close contact, stay at home if you're sick, cover coughs and sneezes, wear a facemask if you are sick, clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily (This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks). The South African Democratic Teachers Union in KwaDukuza on Thursday said it is willing to pull out all the stops to ensure its grievances are dealt with. The union picketed outside the Department of Education circuit office, calling for the removal of one official who is alleged to be corrupt. The allegations of corruption surfaced in 2018 when the union reportedly called on the DoE to launch an investigation on two officials who SADTU claimed were corrupt. One official changed his position which was welcomed with warm hands by SADTU in KwaDukuza. SADTU Secretary in KwaDukuza, Nduduzo Ngcobo said the circuit office will remain closed until DoE takes decisive action. “In 2018 we called upon DoE to recall two officials from their position due to corruption but no progressive action was taken, instead DoE launched an investigation but did not dig deep to find evidence of corruption. As SADTU we believe the probe was launched to deceive us into believing that something is being done. Circuit office will stay shut down until we hear from the department,” said Nduduzo Ngcobo. No response was received from the Department of Education in ILembe District at the time of going to press.

Coronavirus myths debunked There have been several hoax messages regarding Covid-19 circulating on social media. There are also "tips" on how to avoid contracting the viral strain. People are urged to recognise false information. Here are myths debunked by the World Health Organisation: Does the new coronavirus affect older people, or are younger people also susceptible? People of all ages can be infected by the new coronavirus (2019-nCoV). Older people, and people with preexisting medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease) appear to be more vulnerable to becoming severely ill with the virus. WHO advises people of all ages to take steps to protect themselves from the virus, for example by following good hand hygiene and good respiratory hygiene. Can eating garlic help prevent infection with the new coronavirus? Garlic is a healthy food that may have some antimicrobial properties. However, there is no evidence from the current outbreak that eating garlic has protected people from the new coronavirus. Cold weather and snow CANNOT kill the new coronavirus There is no reason to believe that cold weather can kill the new coronavirus or other diseases. The normal human body temperature remains around 36.5°C to 37°C, regardless of the external temperature or weather. The most effective way to protect yourself against the new coronavirus is by frequently cleaning your hands with alcohol-based hand rub or washing them with soap and water. Taking a hot bath does not prevent the new coronavirus disease Taking a hot bath will not prevent you from catching COVID-19. Your normal body temperature remains around 36.5°C to 37°C, regardless of the temperature of your bath or shower. Actually, taking a hot bath with extremely hot water can be

harmful, as it can burn you. The best way to protect yourself against COVID-19 is by frequently cleaning your hands. By doing this you eliminate viruses that may be on your hands and avoid infection that could occur by then touching your eyes, mouth, and nose. The new coronavirus cannot be transmitted through goods manufactured in China or any country reporting COVID-19 cases Even though the new coronavirus can stay on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days (depending on the type of surface), it is very unlikely that the virus will persist on a surface after being moved, travelled, and exposed to different conditions and temperatures. If you think a surface may be contaminated, use a disinfectant to clean it. After touching it, clean your hands with an alcoholbased hand rub or wash them with soap and water. Can spraying alcohol or chlorine all over your body kill the new coronavirus? No. Spraying alcohol or chlorine all over your body will not kill viruses that have already entered your body. Spraying such substances can be harmful to clothes or mucous membranes (i.e. eyes, mouth). Be aware that both alcohol and chlorine can be useful to disinfect surfaces, but they need to be used under appropriate recommendations. Do vaccines against pneumonia protect you against the new coronavirus? No. Vaccines against pneumonia, such as pneumococcal vaccine and Haemophilus influenza type B (Hib) vaccine, do not provide protection against the new coronavirus. The virus is so new and different that it needs its own vaccine. Researchers are trying to develop a vaccine against 2019-nCoV, and WHO is supporting their efforts. Although these vaccines are not effective against 2019-nCoV, vaccination against respiratory illnesses is highly recommended to protect your health.

Provincial Integrated Boy Development Workshop
Coronavirus halts Municipal programmes By Xpress Reporter
In attempts to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus, government declared that social distancing must be enforced, gatherings of 100 people banned on all events and schools shut down. Since the outbreak in South Africa, Covid-19 has halted many services, hence government imposed stricter measures to curb the spread. With many municipal programmes
halted in Municipalities under ILembe District, KwaDukuza Municipality has called off its Demarcation Board Public Meeting scheduled to be held at KwaDukuza Town Hall. KwaDukuza Municipality Media Liaison Officer Sipho Mkhize said the Municipality is pleading with the public to follow precautions to prevent the spread of the virus. “KwaDukuza Municipality joins millions of South Africans in
advocating for collective action against the Coronavirus. Due to rapid spread of the Coronavirus we have had to reschedule Demarcation Board Meeting,” said Mkhize. “The municipality is currently engaged in procurement of billboards to share messages and hygienic routines to be followed during this hard time to help slow down the rise of this pandemic,” said Mkhize.

MANDENI: Mandeni Local Municipality hosted the provincial Intergrated boy development workshop last week.
Mandeni Local Municipality hosted the Provincial Intergrated Boy Development Programme (Boy Scouts) at Sibusisiwe Hall. This fruitful gathering saw boys from various parts of the province coming together to be capacitated with valuable life skills. The programme started with a camp at Matigulu Camp site. His Worship the Mayor, Cllr. Thabani Mdlalose lauded this programme citing it as an important initiative to groom future leaders.
“Most of the programmes today focus on grooming a girl child, but once that child is groomed she goes out to a society that is not welcoming of her, it is important to ensure we groom boys as well for a better society" said Mdlalose. This event was attended by MEC for Social Development, Nonhlanhla Khoza, Mandeni Municipality councillors, religious leaders and various civil society organizations

KwaDukuza traffic officials quickly closed off the road whilst the fire department was alerted. However the prompt response by the fire-fighters was not enough to save the lady's vehicle. The elderly lady, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “I'm thankful to be alive because it's clear that I would not have been able to escape, had the blaze started while I was still inside the vehicle”. At the time of going to press, it was not yet clear what caused the fire, although many eyewitnesses and bystanders speculated that it could have been caused by faulty wiring.

World Water Day WATER DAY: World Water Day is held on 22 March
By Xpress Reporter
World Water Day, held on 22 March every year since 1993, focuses on the importance of freshwater. World Water Day celebrates water and raises awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water. It is about taking action to tackle the global water crisis. A core focus of World Water Day is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030. The idea for this international day goes back to 1992, the year in which the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro took place. That same year, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution by which 22 March of each year was declared World Day for Water, to be observed starting in 1993. World Water Day 2020 is about water and climate change and how the two are inextricably linked. The campaign shows how our use of water will help reduce floods, droughts, scarcity and pollution, and will help fight climate change itself. By adapting to the water effects of climate change, we will protect health and save lives. And, by using water more efficiently, we will reduce greenhouse gases.
Tuberculosis Awareness Month By Xpress Reporter
Tuberculosis (TB) causes thousands of deaths every year in South Africa and the rest of the world. TB is a chronic infectious disease that usually affects the lungs. TB is mainly spread when someone with TB coughs or sneezes, and someone else breaths in the air-borne bacteria. A person can be infected with the TB organism for years without getting sick or spreading it on to others, but when their immune system weakens for some reason, TB infection can develop into active disease. When a person becomes infected with TB, the bacteria in the lungs multiply causing pneumonia; the patient experiences chest pain and has a persistent cough which often brings up blood.
TB can be cured, but requires rigorous unbroken treatment that lasts for six months failure to complete the treatment regimen can result in the emergence of drug-resistant strains of TB. TB is generally classified as being either latent or active. Latent TB - the bacteria are inactive but present in the body. The patient has no symptoms and is not contagious. Active TB - the bacteria are active and make the patient ill. Active TB is contagious. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Tuberculosis Report 2013, TB incidence is falling at a rate of 2% per year and global TB deaths decreased from 1.4 million in 2011 to 1.3 million deaths in 2012.
World Poetry Day Every 21 March is World Poetry Day. It is a day to encourage people to read, write, teach, and publish poetry and to recognise the great cultural contribution poetry makes to human society. In celebrating World Poetry Day, March 21, UNESCO recognizes the unique ability of poetry to capture the creative spirit of the human mind. A decision to proclaim 21 March as World Poetry Day was adopted during UNESCO's 30th session held in Paris in 1999. One of the main objectives of the Day is to support linguistic diversity through
poetic expression and to offer endangered languages the opportunity to be heard within their communities. The observance of World Poetry Day is also meant to encourage a return to the oral tradition of poetry recitals, to promote the teaching of poetry, to restore a dialogue between poetry and the other arts such as theatre, dance, music and painting, and to support small publishers and create an attractive image of poetry in the media, so that the art of poetry will no longer be considered an outdated form of art, but one which enables society as a whole to regain and assert its identity.

We, the Muslim community in KwaDukuza are fully cognisant of the speech delivered by our Honourable president on Sunday, 15 March 2020. The president has acted positively in attempting to contain the already widespread pandemic and it is of paramount importance that we as citizens of the country respond likewise in the most pragmatic manner. In keeping in line with the presidential announcements we would like to strongly advise our congregants to strictly adhere to the following guidelines: 1. Celebrating Human Rights Day
Ashville Primary embarks on anti-bullying campaign
By Xpress Reporter
South Africans commemorate Human Rights Day annually on 21 March in honour of the sacrifices that accompanied the struggle for the attainment of democracy in our country. This day is an opportunity to reflect on progress made in the promotion and protection of human rights. The aim of this day is to promote respect for human rights, promote the protection, development and attainment of human rights, and to monitor and assess the observance of human rights in South Africa. On 21 March 1960, the community of Sharpeville and Langa townships, like their fellow compatriots across the country, embarked on a protest march against pass laws. Campaigners gathered at police stations in townships near Johannesburg where they were dispersed by police. At the Sharpeville police station a scuffle broke out. Part of a wire fence was trampled, allowing the crowd to move forward. The police opened fire, apparently without having been given a prior order to do so. Sixty-nine people were killed and 180 wounded. In apartheid South Africa this day became known as Sharpeville Day. The democratic government declared March 21 Human Rights Day to commemorate and honour those who fought for our liberation and the rights we enjoy today. We commemorate Human Rights Day to reinforce our commitment to the Bill of Rights as enshrined in our Constitution.

Gueldies impress in debut season Newly formed Gueldies Volleyball Club impressed in their debut season in the K w a D u k u z a Vo l l e y b a l l Association Easter Volleyball tournament that got underway at the association courts last Thursday, firmly entrenching themselves as favourites to lift the cup. They faced Manor Old Boys in the opening round of the pool stages and cruised past them winning 25-7, 25-17. The team made up of Nolan, Ponch, Denzil, Sherwin, Sam, Lennox,
Raja, Killer, Wenley, Daniel and Ashley proved a handful for the MOB squad. Gueldies totally dominated the opening set demolishing MOB. MOB made a bit of a recovery in the second set but Gueldies superiority continued as they claimed victory. Darnall United also showed their dominance humiliating Heights 25-2 in the first set. Heights, to their credit, fought back in a tightly contested second set but went down 20-25. Sunbrook and Cool Leaders
were engaged in a titanic 3 set battle. Sunbrook drew first blood by narrowly winning the first set 25-22. Cool Leaders came back fighting in the second set winning 25-19. The third set was a closely contested affair with Sunbrook holding on for a 20-18 victory. Bethel CC cruised in their 254, 25- 8 win over the all girls team of H2O. Unfortunately, due to the corona virus threat, all games are suspended until further notice.
