Tragic crash claims life of elderly man By Xpress Reporter

The family of Kitty Govender (78) are devastated after he was killed when a goods train slammed into his vehicle at a railway crossing in Etete, KwaDukuza. IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson, Paul Herbst said that Govender was declared dead on the scene. Captain Vinny Pillay of Umhlali SAPS said, “A light motor vehicle

driven by Mr Kitty Govender was crossing a dangerous level crossing at Shavins store in Etete. A goods train collided onto his vehicle, killing him instantly.” A family member expressed concern over the level crossing where the accident occurred. “The crossing has no boom gates or warning signs. There are also deep potholes, and visibility is poor due to long grass.

Motorists' view is also obscured because of piles of railway stones.” Govender was a boilermaker by trade, and was employed by Tongaat Hullett for many years. He was also a former employee of Perry Ford. He was a force to be reckoned with in the structural steel and boiler making industry. He was also the driving force behind the establishment of Impulse

by the Sea, a restaurant in Tinley Manor owned by his daughter Shamenthri and late son-in-law, Neville Reddi. Govender is described as a family man who had a strong personality, high values and integrity. He leaves behind his wife, Va s t h a l l a ; o n l y d a u g h t e r , Shamenthri; three grandchildren and a great grandchild.

Service delivery issues discussed

By Xpress Reporter

The KwaDukuza Municipality Infrastructure and Technical Portfolio Committee (IAT) of Council held its Meeting on Thursday, 12 April 2018 at the Municipal Council Chambers. At this seating, all Councillors were invited to discuss issues relating to service delivery in the wards pertaining to departments accounting to the IAT portfolio (i.e. Civil Engineering Services, Human Settlement and Electricity). The administration presented projects that are still in the

implementing stages for this current financial year as well as responded to questions rising from Councillors. Councillors received a report on the scheduled commencing report of the Chief Albert Luthuli Farm Roads project in Ward 10. “The project indirectly aides the current developments occurring at the Chief Albert Luthuli Museum, and

anticipates future developments as earmarked in the Nokukhanya Luthuli Street Concept Masterplan.” Councillors have requested that the electrical business unit brainstorms various strategies it can deploy to mitigate the number of streetlights that do not work in the various areas. “Councillors expressed that this situation presents an opportunity for criminal activity

in some areas, it was therefore finalised that consultation between the unit and Councillors would ensue. Councillors also requested to be informed when officials embark on maintenance so that they are able to confirm that indeed the maintenance was done and/or at times assist in pointing out of unidentifiable areas (i.e. communities without street names).”

Last week, Umfolozi College students at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Campus, Groutville staged a peaceful protest against Central Offices in the college. A number of students voiced their concern regarding the lack of student residence. Students vowed to sleep in classes until the Department of Higher Education, NSFAS and Central Offices of Umfolozi in Richards Bay come and address the issue of student residence and student villages. It is also alleged that students are not receiving their NSFAS allowance for travel and accommodation. Campus management, NSFAS and SASCO held a

close meeting with intentions to come up with an immediate solution to resolve this issue. Speaking to the Xpress Times, Assistance Director of Albert Luthuli Campus, Bhekani Ndlovu stated that attempts to find common ground did not succeed. “The meeting we had on Friday was unsuccessful and this led to the closure of Albert Luthuli Campus until further notice. At midday today, inside committee will host another meeting to see if we can come up with a solution,” said Bhekani.

Find Your Future is a concept developed by Pretoria based company, Digital Incubator, as an empowerment tool. The event was conceptualised by Digital Incubator Managing Director, Tasneem Moosa and run by a team of well-known South African personalities in the role of facilitators. Top Ten Car Care Tips • Check and change the oil. No single step will help an engine last more than regular oil and filter changes will. Conversely, nothing will destroy an engine faster than neglecting oil-level checks or fresh-oil changes.

• Flush the cooling system and change coolant once a year. A 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water will keep the cooling system in good shape and prevent corrosion and deposits from building up inside the cooling

system. • Change out transmission and differential oils. While not requiring frequent service, these fluids must be changed according to service intervals. underside. Hosing off winter salt and road grime is a good idea. • Everything with moving parts needs grease to survive. This ball joint went into early retirement due to poor lubrication. • Nothing keeps paint looking good and protected like a coat of quality wax. Apply wax at least every six months. • Driveline components such as u-joints also require regular lubrication. The driveline may have to be removed to access the zerk grease fitting. • Protect the interior plastic by parking the vehicle in the shade, using a window deflector screen, and applying a UV protectant to

prevent the plastic and vinyl from drying out. • Inspect, clean, and repack wheel bearings with wheel bearing grease according to service intervals. Wheel bearings and grease are inexpensive compared to spindle and hub replacement, or liberated wheels rolling down the road ahead of you. • Brake fluid is hygroscopic. This means it is adept at attracting moisture. Moisture causes components to corrode and fail. Replace fluid and bleed system once a year. Brake fluid is cheap. Calipers, hoses, and sensors are expensive.

· Reduce Your Drag: Any external fixings such as roof boxes, their rails and bike racks should be removed when not in use. They change airflow over the vehicle and increase the aerodynamic draft. Opening sunroofs and windows will also increase air drag over the car. This means a great force is needed to drive the vehicle through the air, requiring extra power from your engine, and increasing fuel consumption and emissions. · Use High Quality Fuels: Using high quality fuels, such as BP Ultimate, will allow the vehicle to run more efficiently, enabling improved combustion quality thus reducing fuel consumption and lowering emissions. Independent tests that the fuel economy benefit of BP Ultimate Unleaded can be up to 25km more per tank and up to 36km extra when using BP Ultimate Diesel, compared to ordinary fuels. · Turn Off Your Air-con: The airconditioning unit contains a compressor pump driven by your engine. Fuel Saving Tips

· Ease Off the Accelerator: Accelerating hard and using high engine speeds will make the engine consume more fuel. This is because, under high loads and speeds, the engine is not operating very efficiently. Accelerating more steadily to the desired speed will reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Using the engine in its most efficient range can reduce consumption and emissions: · Avoid Short Journeys: On short journeys when an engine is cold it uses more fuel because some of the up. It is best to avoid such journeys as much as possible. Energy in the fuel is used to heat the engine. The catalytic converter in the exhaust, which reduces harmful emissions, is also less efficient when cold. Cold start journeys, therefore, lead to high emissions and high fuel consumption for several minutes after start up. It is best to avoid such journeys as much as possible. · Change Down a Gear: When driving in a steep hill, do not labour the engine at low engine speeds. It is better to use a lower gear and keep the engine speed h i g h e r . Honda, -Automobile Association (AA)

engine, increasing the work it has to do. This requires more fuel and produces increased fuel emissions. · Lighten Your Load: Carrying unnecessary weight in the boot cabin of the vehicle will make the engine work harder when accelerating this particularly affects stop/start driving. Simply removing this load will reduce fuel consumption and emissions. · Avoid Stop-Start Driving: The engine has to work hard when accelerating and every time the brakes are used this energy is lost as heat. By observing and predicting road and traffic conditions ahead, the effects of stop/start driving can be reduced. Simply lifting off the accelerator earlier and gently slowing down will improve fuel economy. · Avoid Excessive Idling Unnecessary idling: will consume fuel and produce emissions even while stationary. During idling periods of several minutes or more, where it is safe to do so, switching off your engine will stop fuel consumption and emissions completely.

Precautions when driving at night Driving at night is more of a challenge than many people think. It's also more dangerous. Fortunately, several effective measures can be taken to minimize these after-dark dangers by preparing your car and following special guidelines while you drive. The following steps are recommended: Prepare your car for night driving. Clean headlights, taillights, signal lights and windows (inside and out) once a week, more often if necessary. Have your headlights properly aimed. Misaimed headlights blind other drivers and reduce your ability to see the road. Don't drink and drive. Not only does alcohol severely impair your driving ability, it also acts as a depressant. Just one drink can induce fatigue. Avoid smoking when you drive. Smoke's nicotine and carbon monoxide hamper night vision. If there is any doubt, turn your headlights on. Lights will not help you see better in early twilight, but they'll make it easier for other drivers to see you. Being seen is as important as seeing. Reduce your speed and increase your following distances. It is more difficult to judge other vehicle's speeds and distances at night. Don't overdrive your headlights. You should be able to stop inside the illuminated area. If you're not, you are creating a blind crash area in front of your vehicle. When following another vehicle, keep your headlights on low beams so you don't blind the driver ahead of you. If an oncoming vehicle doesn't lower beams from

high to low, avoid glare by watching the side of the road, then look quickly ahead to determine the other vehicle's position. Keep doing this until you have passed the other vehicle. Even though the other driver does not dim his headlights, do not retaliate by turning on your high-beam headlights. Do not strain yourself by driving continuously. Make

frequent stops for light snacks and exercise. If you're too tired to drive, stop and get rest. If you have car trouble, pull off the road as far as possible. Warn approaching traffic at once by setting up reflecting triangles near your vehicle and 300 feet behind it. Turn on flashers and the dome light. Stay off the roadway and get passengers away from the area. Observe night driving safety as soon as the sun goes down. Twilight is one of the most difficult times to drive, because your eyes are constantly changing to adapt to the growing darkness.

MAMA ALISHA

MAMA ALISHA

THANKS ALOT MAMA ALISHA I am Salashnee from Shakaville Stanger. I’m here to thank Mama Alisha for helping me sell my property at a reasonable price. I was a proud Mother of 3 kids and was happily married. But my life turned upside down in 2014 when I lost all my 3 kids and their father in a road accident. I survived because I was at work that day. Since then I have panic attacks, My families memories were killing me and I decided to sell the house in 2015. Many people used to call come see the house but they don’t come back up to when I went to MAMA ALISHA after reading about her in the newspaper. She came to the house , blessed it and told me she will do the rest at her place of work. I was surprised when just in two weeks a buyer was found and I was given a reasonable amount of money. BEYOND THE TOUCHLINE

The EPL was decided under ironical circumstances over the weekend. When they had the opportunity to seal the title on home ground, Manchester City lost to their neighbour and bitter rival, Manchester United. On Sunday, United returned the favour by losing to the bottom team on the log, West Bromwich Albion, to hand over the championship with 5 more games to play - a comprehensive win in anyone's terms. They have led the League since the beginning of the season and thus far have lost only twice, sweeping aside all before them. They are deserving winners and thoroughly entitled to all the accolades. Now to the FA Cup semi-final over the coming weekend. At home, the PSL title is a twohorse race between Sundowns and Orlando Pirates with three games left. Sundowns lead by 3 points with a game in hand and

are favourites, but one slip and the title could go to Pirates which will please their hoard of supporters throughout the country. An interesting few weeks lie ahead. The Commonwealth Games is done and dusted and our team has returned with its head held up high. We were placed 6th on the medals table behind countries like Canada and New Zealand. Australia, based on its size and sporting prowess (not cheating!) was an overwhelming winner with 198 (80 gold), followed by England with 135 (44 gold) and India 66 (26 gold). Our 37 medals comprised 13 gold, 11 silver and 13 bronze. There were a number of heroes, chief among them Chad le Clos and Tatjana Schoenmaker (swimming), and Caster Semenya (athletics) who won 2 gold medals each. Many more won single golds and silvers. There were

disappointments as well. The much-vaunted Sevens Rugby side could only come fourth and the 4 x 100 metres relay team came second when 2 of the quartet came 1st and 2nd in the 100 metres dash. The secondfastest man on the planet, Yohan Blake of Jamaica, was beaten into 3rd place by our own Akani Simbine and Henricho Bruintjies - a rare achievement indeed! Now to begin focusing on the 2020 Olympic Games and SASCOC has to come to the party. Instead of being involved in petty bickering about positions on the Executive and suspensions of individuals, they should start putting mechanisms into place so that the best in the various codes are well-trained and resourced to compete on equal terms with the rest of the world. For once, the usual favourites were not on the podium at the end of the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai. Lewis

Hamilton a n d Sebastian Ve t t e l finished Jayce Singh is a former 4 t h a n d sports administrator and 8 t h Patron of the KZNCU respectively in a race that was full of excitement and surprise tactics being utilised. The winner was Australian Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) followed by Valtteri Botas (Mercedes) and Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari). The winner is known to celebrate by drinking champagne from his sweatsoaked shoes and he did just that! However, the standings on the log table haven't changed and Vettel (54 points) and Hamilton (45) still lead although the margins are much reduced. The difference between 1st and 5th is only 24 points. If results continue to change in every race, then an interesting season lies ahead. Until the next time, have a happy sporting week. AUCTION

Darnall are favourites to lift the Xpress Times Easter trophy

Darnall United and TVGB are through to the final of the Xpress Times Easter Volleyball tournament (played under KwaDukuza Volleyball Association) that is scheduled to take place tomorrow (Thursday) at the volleyball courts. Supporters are expected to experience an explosion of volleyball and all roads should lead to the volleyball courts at Stanger High. Darnall will start marginally favourites to lift the cup. Darnall booked their place in the finals after a hard fought 2-1 victory

over the revamped Frendz outfit. Darnall raced to a 25-14 victory in the first set. Frendz regrouped and took the game to the opposition winning 25-20. The final set was evenly poised but Darnall had the fire-power to win the set 15-12. The other semi-final between Cool Leaders and TVGB was equally tight with TVGB eventually pulling off all stops to eventually win 25-23, 27-25. Cool Leaders will play Frendz in the play-off at 7pm with the final scheduled at 8pm.

Stanger International Shotokan Karate Association hosted a successful tournament with a record number of entrants.

Date : 24 April 2018 (Tuesday) Time : 17h30 Venue : KwaDukuza Town Hall Your attendance will be highly appreciated. Issued by KwaDukuza Municipality together with the Ward Councillor, Cllr Dolly Govender.

MN 55/2018

The newly formed Heights Volleyball Club, under the leadership of Niren (Bob) Reddy, will be participating in the SDVA social league for 2018. Bob, as he is affectionately known, has taken the initiative on his own to give something back to the community by coaching the youngsters that belong to the sub-economic flats in Stanger Heights. Bob, who owns an engineering business in Stanger felt it was it a necessary task for him to educate the youngsters of the community against drug abuse and crime by involving them in volleyball, a game that brought him many accolades. Bob was one of Stanger's finest volleyball players who brought fear to his opponents, especially in the spiking department. He represented KZN on numerous occasions at the South African Volleyball Championships and performed with excellence and dignity. His motto “second sucks” is what he has inculcated into his charges in Stanger Heights and has issued a warning to other teams in the social league that Heights Volleyball Club have entered the league to win it. Bob, who will be assisted by Sandhir 'Tinboy' Jugmohan as the assistant coach, did express concern at the lack of equipment for his charges and is appealing to the local community to assist in this regard. He can be contacted on: 073 205 4643.
