KwaDukuza produces 65-yearold doctoral graduate
Former school clerk completes PhD the greatest human feats by successfully completing her PhD in Education, done through the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Her thesis focused on Zulu kinship system and its influence on the education of orphaned children. Dr Jonathan, who spent the bulk of her childhood within a child-headed family setup, always dreamt of becoming an educator. But, due to family circumstances, she
By Xpress Reporter
When the education fever bites, age can neither be a deterrence nor a hindrance. Retired KwaDukuza school clerk turned schoolteacher Lorna Jonathan has just become a living testimony to the hackneyed idiom, “Age is Just A Number”. Lorna Jonathan, now Dr Lorna Jonathan, has accomplished easily one of
was forced to settle for the role of administrative clerk, where she served for more than 20 years as an admin clerk at Stanger Manor Primary School. However her tenacity, and her burning desire to become a teacher saw her finally graduating with a diploma in teaching at the age of 40. Alas, that was not enough to see her realizing her dream as she was forced to call upon an erstwhile provincial MEC in order to g e t a 10kg
position as a schoolteacher. It was only at age 50 that she was finally appointed as an educator, the one event in her life that filled her with tremendous joy. ““I was finally able to make a difference and add value to the lives of pupils as an educator. I treasured every moment with my young souls, knowing that I was given this platform to inspire, instil and awake imaginations to success,” she says. Dr Jonathan, whose love of
children can only be compared to her compassionate nature, and down to earth personality, says her PhD research sought to explore the uniqueness of the kinship system within African culture. The high number of orphans in Africa, according to Dr Jonathan, can be attributed to, inter alia, HIV/Aids pandemic. “The impact of poverty on schooling and the degree of ostracism (of orphans) within schools, is a constant problem. In some families,
the system failed to the point that the only option for vulnerable and orphaned children was institutional care,” she points out. She said children in care had reported fully on the abuse and neglect that led to their placement. Most of those who were placed with extended family had enjoyed family life before the loss of parents. Dr Jonathan is grateful for her support system of family, friends and supervisors.

KDM mired in racism and “missing millions” allegations Workers demand transformation in the Finance Department By Xpress Reporter
The Finance Department of KwaDukuza Municipality is alleged to be the hive of “institutionalised racism” and deliberate lack of transformation. These were just some of shocking allegations made by the municipal workers on Monday this week, when they marched to the main civic building to deliver a memorandum to the KDM leadership. That was not all, as the workers, who marched under the banner of the SA Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU), also alleged, rather shockingly, that there were missing monies at the municipality that needed further investigation. The workers marched from the Lavoipierre Building next to Sasol Garage, through the CBD and ended up at the Civic Building, where Mayor Lindile Nhaca and the Municipal Manager Nhlanhla Mdakane were on hand to receive the memorandum. KDM has been given seven days to

respond to the memorandum. The memorandum, red by SAMWU KwaDukuza Secretary Nhlanhla Sanga, highlighted workers' concerns about the delay in the appointment of the Executive Director (ED) for Corporate Services, a senior position that the union feels must be filled by a female candidate. The union, through its memorandum, also called for a thorough investigation into the allegations of ghost workers, and the alleged disappearance of R30 million, which had allegedly been lodged into an invalid
FNB account over the past years “The absence of ED for Corporate Services has negative implications which continue to contribute on: • D e l a y i n implementation of Municipal Grading where EDs are the only beneficiaries who are paid on Level 5 and the rest of the staff is paid on Level; 4. This must be investigated; • Delay in the implementation of userfriendly leave management system;

alleged irregularities taking place right under the watch of the IA. Other issues of serious concern include the ageing fleet for key service departments, like waste management etc. The introduction of a sixday working week for new employees has also been questioned by the union, as has the outsourcing of minor functions like the patching up of potholes. SAMWU has called for the suspension of all personnel involved in alleged irregularities, regardless of their positions and/or seniority. Mayor Lindile Nhaca thanked the workers for marching peacefully. Nhaca made an undertaking that the municipality's leadership would revert back to the workers within seven days, as requested by the union. “We note the issues that have been raised by the union. Some of these issues have been raised before. We want you to know that the issues you raised are being taken seriously (by the leadership. The union touched on the issue of missing monies, and we want to confirm that there is an investigation into some of the issues you raised,”

Ilembe District Municipality says that it is aware of hundreds of water leaks across KwaDukuza, which are costing the municipality millions in lost revenue. Addressing protesting community members outside iLembe house last week, the municipality's Operations Manager for KwaDukuza Mr Elias Bhengu said the municipality had appointed a contractor to repair the leaks. Bhengu said the contractor was hard at work, and was about to finish wrap up fixing the leaks in Ward 16. “Ward 16 we are about to complete, and Ward 18 also. That is where we have been bleeding in terms of leaks. That

programme is going to be continuing. There are other areas in which we are going to engage, and start fixing all those leaks,” Bhengu stated. However Bhengu's explanation was clearly not enough to appease the residents of KwaDukuza, who see the many leaks as part of the reason for water outages, as gallons and gallons of clean water goes
to waste on an ongoing basis. On Friday, the 13th of May 2022, Mayor Thobani Shandu and the Municipal Manager Geoffrey Khumalo visited the main feeder pipeline near Hlomendlini in Mandeni to inspect the repair work being done by Umgeni Water. The company said one more leak had since been discovered while work was continuing to
fix the previous two leaks. Further stoppages are anticipated this week as Umgeni Water plans to repair the newly detected leakage. Mayor Shandu was accompanied by Nonjabulo Zondi (Plant Manager for Lower Thukela Water Works) and Nqobile Zungu (Process Controller for Lower Uthukela Water Works).

“The truth is the people at Home Affairs are aware of the paras and they seem to be quiet content with it. The same thing happened to my son and I last year...sad to say the security at Home Affairs is also rude and arrogant towards us,” one person lamented. With all the outpouring of anger from members of the public, the silence from Home Affairs officials remains defeating. KwaDukuza SAPS have meanwhile acknowledged the problem. Communications Officer Priya Nunkumar said police were following the matter up, after receiving a complaint.

Home Affairs. Other people felt that those paying for spots were also to blame, for enabling the extortion racket to carry on. “But community members are buying (spots) from these paras, and we cannot blame the security or the SAPS about that but we must blame ourselves. As community we need to stand together and stop buying (spots) from paras. (The) paras cannot sell (spots) to us if we don't buy them,” one resident pointed out. A salvo has also been fired at the Home Affairs staff for this situation,, with some resident accusing the officials of involvement in the extortion.

Protestors shut down Glenhills SAPS Cluster nabs suspects for over water outages massive theft
Police in iLembe District made a breakthrough recently, which saw them recovery a variety of heavy duty machinery allegedly stolen from a local business. PROTEST: Ward 16 protestors shut down the Glenhills main road, disrupting the lives of the people of Ward 13
By Xpress Reporter
Last week Wednesday was a weird day for the community of Glenhills and surrounding areas. Residents woke up to sounds of protests and demonstration, with burning tyres and rubble strewn all over the area. And the protesters were not even from the area! Workers and learners were effectively barricaded in their homes. The angry protestors shut down the
main Townview Drive on both sides. When the Xpress Times team arrived at the scene, traffic officers informed us that the protestors were apparently angry about water supply and service delivery. Tyres were still burning on the Townview Drive, making for dangerous driving conditions. However our team managed to track down some of the protesting group, at the entrance to Lot 14.
Present on the scene were Ward 13 councillor Nkululeko Qwabe and Ward 16 councillor Sanele Mthiyane. When approached for comment, Cllr Qwabe referred our reporter to Cllr Mthiyane saying, “Those people were not from my ward. They were from Ward 16, in Nyoniyamanzi and Hillview”. IFP PR councillor Cyril Pandaram felt that service
delivery failures were behind the latest spate of public protests in the area of KwaDukuza He had this to say: “These protests are the result of false promises and lies fed to the poor to get their votes. It is virtually impossible to sustain these false promises and it has been going on since 1994. It is impossible to give every person a free house and free utilities with this present government”.
irrigation machine, two Isuzu bakkies, three Mercedes trucks and a Hyundai excavator. Three suspect were placed under arrest, after a case had been o p e n e d w i t h KwaMaphumulo SAPS. Ilembe SAPS Cluster Acting District Commissioner, Brigadier SB Zondi commended all members involved in the recovery of the heavy duty machinery for their swift action on arresting the suspects linked to the theft.

Ndwedwe learners assault robbery suspects By Xpress Reporter
Two men were rescued by police officers from Ndwedwe police station after being attacked by angry learners at Osindisweni. According to a report from Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the two suspects were attacked by learners from the Suleman Patel Secondary School on Friday m0orning, after they allegedly attempted to snatch a cellphone from a learner
who was on his way to school. When community members heard about the incident, they immediately mobilized and armed themselves before proceeding to the scene, apparently to assist the children n the attack against the suspect,. But, RUSA says when the community members arrived at the scene, the suspects had managed to extricate themselves from the crowd
of learners and sought refuge from the school, where teachers locked them in one of the classrooms. “Reaction Officers were immediately dispatched and on arrival located a crowed of approximately 50 people armed with pangas and sticks protesting at the entrance,” RUSA said. The learners were sent home early as the situation was tense, and Ndwedwe SAPS arrived and removed the suspects.

Furore over two car shows in KwaDukuza By Xpress Reporter
KwaDukuza Child Welfare Society is deeply concerned about plans to hold a rival car show in KwaDukuza, in the same weekend
as the Winter Fair, which has a car show component. In a letter that has been leaked to the media, the Welfare Society has expressed its great displeasure to the organizers of the Nitro Car
Show, scheduled to take place on the 2nd of July 2022. The Society laments the fact that the parallel car show will present a “notable disservice” to the Society's main fundraising initiative.
Wellness Day at Ushaka Mall
The Society is calling for the date of the Nitro Car Show to be changed. “Should you be unaware of our core function, our organization serves the greater part of iLembe District, where we offer services to children, women and the poorest of the poor. Can you or any other individual/organization host an event that would rival one that is for the sole purpose of helping the neediest within our community? “It is commendable that this event is hosted in memory of the late Mr Kista and Preasan Naidoo. I have no doubt that both these individuals would in fact wholeheartedly support our organization and ensure that our event is in no way compromised by an event that stands to benefit another NPO within our community. As members of a
small-knit community, they would not seek to host any event that wold divide our community,” the Society stated in its letter signed by the Secretary. Both events are set to take place on the 2nd of July 2022. The Society is hoping that sanity will prevail. It has expressed its wish to see the second car show being re-scheduled, as the town of KwaDukuza is not big enough to accommodate two shows at the same time. At the time of going to press, attempts to reach the organizers of the Nitro Car Show to comment on the matter had drawn a blank. “We hope that you, as organizer will act with a sense of moral conscience, now that you have been made aware of all of the above,” the Society said in its letter to the organizers.

KwaDukuza Mayoral Roadshows underway The Mayor of KwaDukuza, Lindile Nhaca has been engaging various stakeholders on the 20222023 budget and Integrated Development Plan (IDP). The engagements form part of a series of statutory community activities which are held to ensure the participation of all stakeholders in preparing the IDP. The mayor on 31 March
2022, tabled before council the draft 2022-2023 budget to the value of R 2.5 billion which she described as “a budget that is needs driven and a budget with no room for “nice to haves”. On Thursday last week, in the morning, the Mayor met with residents of Wards 14, 15, 24 and 26; she later convened another meeting at the Groutville Market Sports
Field to address residents of Wards 9, 10, 11, 12 and 29. The Mayoral Roadshows kicked off on 03 May 2022. The rationale behind the roadshow meetings is to solicit inputs for the compilation of the IDP, Performance Management Systems and the allocation of the proposed budget. The new financial year will come into effect on 01 July 2022.

WATER: ActionSA Regional EXCO member Vishaam Singh is seen together with ActionSA members distributing water in the Sunny Park area.
The past week turned out to be a horrible one for residents of KwaDukuza as water supply to most of the region was cut off. To alleviate the plight of residents, ActionSA distributed over 2 500 litres of still bottled water to residents in affected areas. ActionSA responded to the community's need for drinking water by purchasing and distributing bottled water to residents. ActionSA Councillor, Nel Sewraj said: “We deployed teams to distribute water in Sunny Park, Stanger Manor
and Glenhills. We ensured the elderly received water by distributing it door to door at the RA Moodley Homes. We also took water to the less fortunate in Nyoniyamanzi, Melville and Happy Valley because ActionSA embraces a propoor approach.” Sewraj also added: “KwaDukuza residents are fed up with iLembe District Municipality with its countless water disruptions. Last week's protest action was a case in point. Through this initiative, we tried to provide some relief for the
residents until the water was restored”. The ageing water infrastructure has become the nemesis of KwaDukuza causing continuous water shutdowns and countless burst pipes and leaks. All of this is having a negative impact on the lives and businesses of the residents. Going forward, ActionSA says it will be exploring various solutions that will address the water issues and ensure stable provision of water supply to all residents of KwaDukuza and iLembe at large.

Orlando Pirates reached the CAF Confederation Cup final on Sunday despite a shock 1-0 loss to Libyan visitors Al Ahli Tripoli in a semi-final second leg. Pirates built a 2-0 first-leg lead in Benghazi last Sunday and qualified 2-1 on aggregate for a second final appearance in the second-tier African competition. Seemingly in a hopeless position after the home defeat, Tripoli were the better team in the return match, especially in the opening half on a cold, damp night in Soweto on the outskirts of Johannesburg. But with the match heading for a goalless stalemate, Libyan substitute Ali Abu Arqoub scored on 89 minutes to set up a tense finish, which included four minutes of added time. A second Tripoli goal would have taken the semifinal to a penalty shootout, but the tired visitors never threatened to score a second time at Orlando Stadium. Ahly dominated the early exchanges and were awarded a penalty midway through the half when Pirates' gaffe-prone captain and centre-back Happy Jele handled. The Gambian referee pointed to the spot, but later changed his mind after reviewing the incident on the touchline VAR monitor. While replays confirmed the ball came off the boot of Jele and touched his right hand, the match official presumably considered it a ball-to-hand situation rather than vice versa. Ghana-born Richard Ofori of Pirates was the much busier goalkeeper, repeatedly thwarting Tripoli with acrobatic saves and parries, while opposite number Muhammad Nashnoush was a virtual spectator. The only time Pirates threatened to score in the opening 45 minutes was off a free-kick which eluded the Ahly defence, but unmarked Jele failed to connect with the ball. Pirates improved in the second half, helped by a string of substitutions, while an Ahly side used to performing at sea level gradually faded as they battled the 1 632-metre altitude. Arqoub had barely came off the bench when he scored, latching on to a loose ball outside the box and unleashing a shot that took a slight deflection off Goodman Mosele before landing in the net. Pirates will face Moroccan club Renaissance Berkane, who scored three goals from the 79th minute to defeat Democratic Republic of Congo visitors TP Mazembe 4-1. Bakr el Helali gave Berkane a 10th-minute lead that lasted just 60 seconds before Phillippe Kinzumbi equalised in north-eastern Morocco. Mazembe were reduced to 10 men midway through the second half when Tandi Mwape was sent off and the late goal rush began when captain Larbi Naji put Renaissance in front a second time. Youssef el Fahli converted an 88th-minute penalty to edge Berkane in front on goal aggregate and he put the outcome beyond doubt with another goal six minutes into added time. Beaten 1-0 in the first leg last Sunday after conceding an added-time goal, Berkane triumphed 4-2 on aggregate Berkane won the Confederation Cup in 2020, while Pirates were runners-up to Etoile Sahel of Tunisia in 2015. The final is scheduled for this Friday in the Nigerian city of Uyo.

Liverpool FA Cup win a huge boost for quad bid
Liverpool spot-kick hero Alisson Becker said the team's FA Cup final victory against Chelsea on penalties would give them a huge confidence boost as they chase a historic quadruple. The two teams were locked at 0-0 after extra-time at Wembley on Saturday, with clear-cut chances at a premium. Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy prevented Sadio Mane striking the winner after Cesar Azpilicueta had hit the post, only for Brazil goalkeeper Alisson to deny Mason Mount before Kostas Tsimikas struck to seal a 6-5 win. "It was a shame we didn't score during normal time, but it was a proper fight after in extra time, anything could

"It gives us even more confidence to keep on going for the Premier League and also the Champions League final. "This is a fantastic moment and now we just need to enjoy it." Liverpool are three points behind leaders Manchester City with two Premier League matches remaining and will meet Real Madrid in the Champions League final later this month. They won the League Cup earlier in the season, beating Chelsea on penalties on that occasion as well.
Captain Jordan Henderson said it felt "pretty special" for Liverpool to win the FA Cup for the first time since 2006. "We're here to lift trophies, we work so hard all season," he said. "To come here and get over the line means a lot to everyone. The fans deserve it, the whole club." But he said the players could not rest on their laurels. "We've got to recover quickly, another big game on Tuesday against Southampton, we have to be ready for that," he said. "And then Wolves at the weekend to finish the Premier League season off and then the Champions League final. We have three big games left and hopefully we can win all three and finish the season on a high.”
Cricket world mourns another tragedy: The 'greatest fielder ever' has died
Andrew Symonds considered one of the greatest fielders
from all provinces in both the male and female categories. KSST ladies gave an excellent account of themselves in the champions cup. The KSST ladies would like to thank their major sponsor KSST Auto Engineering for
sponsoring them. These ladies have been keeping the KDVA name flying high in VSA. They would also like to thank each and every sponsor for their generosity towards helping these ladies enter this big event.
Proteas legend Jonty Rhodes says Andrew Symonds was "arguably the greatest all-round fielder ever" following the Australian's death on Saturday night. Symonds died in a onevehicle car crash in
Queensland on Saturday night. He was 46. It is another tragic blow for Australian cricket after the recent deaths of fellow greats Shane Warne and Rod Marsh. Rhodes, himself considered one of the
greatest fielders the game has ever seen, was one of many to pay tribute to Symonds on social media, having worked alongside him in a coaching capacity at the Indian Premier League.
Proteas trio to feature in Women's T20 Challenge in India
Proteas women's trio Laura Wolvaardt, Sune Luus and Ayabonga Khaka will compete in the upcoming Women's T20 Challenge in India. The tournament's fourth edition is set to be played from 23-28 May at Pune's MCA Stadium and will coincide with the Indian Premier
League (IPL) playoffs. The Women's T20 Challenge will comprise of four games between three teams - the Supernovas, Trailblazers and Velocity. This will be the final threeteam tournament with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) looking to expand the 2023 edition to
five or six teams. "It is our mission to promote and nurture the sport we love across all formats and the Women's T20 Challenge has always been key to that endeavour," said BCCI president Sourav Ganguly. "The continued success of the tournament both on and off the field is encouraging
and gives us immense confidence that we are heading in the right direction." The best of Indian women's cricket will combine with some of the leading stars from South Africa, England, West Indies and Australia. A total of 12 overseas players will compete in this year's T20 Challenge.
Luus, who led South Africa to the semi-finals of the Women's Cricket World Cup earlier this year, will represent the Supernovas this time around. The Proteas all-rounder took part in the 2020 edition, where she played for the Velocity side. Proteas fast bowler Khaka
will also appear in her second T20 Challenge as she represents Velocity. Wolvaardt, who was South Africa's best batter at the World Cup, will also feature for Velocity. All three Proteas stars featured in this past weekend's concluding FairBreak Invitational in Dubai.
