Another weekend of carnage on N2 Highway The N2 Highway is continuing to claim lives at an alarming rate. The past weekend was no exception, after a total of three lives were lost in separate horrific accidents on Sunday the 15th of August 2021. In the first accident, two people were tragically killed after a light motor vehicle collided with a truck, on Sunday morning. Reports from IPSS Medical rescue suggests that the vehicle was travelling in a southern direction when it lost control and crossed the centre-median. It then crashed head on into a truck travelling in the opposite direction. “The high impact collision unfortunately claimed the lives of both occupants of the car, whilst the truck driver sustained minor injuries. The deceased were cut from the wreckage by Rural Metro Fire and Rescue.

Please reduce your speed in wet weather,” stated IPSS Medical Rescue in a statement In a separate incident on Sunday, one person was killed, 16 sustained injuries when a bakkie and mini-bus collided on the N2 near Mandeni. “IPSS Medical Rescue responded to reports of a collision on the N2, Mandeni. On arrival to this location for the second time today, IPSS paramedics established that a minibus taxi and bakkie had collided head-on. A total of 16 persons sustained various injuries whilst one person from the taxi succumbed to their injuries. Details surrounding the events leading up to the collision are unclear. Patients were stabilised on scene before being transported to hospital,” said IPSS Medical Rescue.

August 2021, at Doboti area in Nsuze policing precinct, where it is alleged that a group of friends were consuming alcohol at a homestead. An argument broke out between two (of the group) when one of them wanted to leave with the alcohol. “The suspect and the deceased had a physical fight where the suspect was beaten. The perpetrator took out a knife and stabbed the victim once on the left side of the chest. Mkhize succumbed to his injury at the scene. A case of murder was opened at Nsuze for investigation,” Mbhele stated. Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a 27-year-old suspect appeared briefly before the KwaDukuza Magistrate's Court on Friday the 13th of August 2021. Police allege that the man was found with two firearms after KwaDukuza SAPS members conducted an operation at Sadloko area in Doringkop. KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala says the suspect was found in possession of a pistol and a revolver, with two rounds of ammunition. “During the investigation, it was established that the suspect was wanted for a case of murder that was committed in March 2021. It is alleged that on 28 March 2021, Bethuel Nzuzo Manganyela (38) was at a bus stop in Doringkop when he was shot by two known men who fled the scene after the incident. The victim was declared dead at the scene,” Gwala stated.

Ward 16 resident irked by water shortages By Xpress Reporter

Lack of water supply continues to plague most parts of KwaDukuza, last week Ward 16 residents accused ILembe District Municipality of incompetency. Residents were left without water between Wednesday and Thursday due to a pipe break on Willow Rd. Fuming residents took to social media to lambast the Municipality, citing that water outages have become a daily occurrence for most wards within KwaDukuza. “As ratepayers and citizens of Ilembe, we have again become victims of an inefficient, irresponsible and reckless local government that has failed us. Ilembe you have once again , and many a time previously failed the residents, parts of cbd, Ocean View and Indian village has no water, this is happening once too often,” said one concerned. ILembe District Municipality apologised to the residents from areas that were affected, the municipality said water

outages were triggered by a broken pipe. “The District Municipality would like to apologize to residents of Ward 16 in KwaDukuza for the water interruption in certain parts of the ward. Areas affected. Warrenton. Ocean view. Indian Village. Sunny Park. The outage is attributed main pipe break on Willow Rd. Repairs are underway. Delays due to cable in the way,” said ILembe District Municipality in a notice. Technical Services Operations Manager for KwaDukuza, Elias Bhengu said one water tanker was deployed to the affected areas to assist residents with water. “The water outages last week were as a result of the pipe repairs at the corner of Willow and Acacia Roads. This was due to the old asbestos cement pipe that burst. The excavation was first done by hand to minimize the damages to electrical infrastructure. One water tanker was deployed to the area concerned,” stated Bhengu.

Condolences pour in for the late Cllr Motala By Xpress Reporter

LATE: The late Cllr Moosa Motala

Condolences continue to pour in for the longest serving member of Inkatha Freedom Party in KwaDukuza, Cllr Moosa Motala, who passed away on early hours of Thursday last week. According to the Chairperson of the IFP in KwaDukuza, Musa Sibisi, the late Motala died due to Covid-19 related complications. Sibisi said Motala's demise is a great loss to the party and the whole of KwaDukuza community. “He was a pillar of strength for the party, someone we all looked up to. We take this moment as the IFP to extend our deepest words of condolences to Moosa Motala's family and friends. He dedicated his whole life in serving the people of KwaDukuza,” expressed Musa Sibisi.

Motala had previously served as Member of Parliament, working under the department of transport led by Sbu Ndebele. Another IFP member, Cyril Pandaram described Moosa Motala as a community hero. “Life and death are in the hands of the Almighty. Rest well my community hero. We have lost a legend. My association with Moosa spanned 40 years. I knew him when he was a firebrand freedom fighter, LAC member, Member of Parliament to a humble councillor. Many did not like his straight forward, up in your face style but that is exactly what attracted me to him. I saw the side of him that many did not see. I saw the Father in him, the friend in him, and the concerned councillor in him. I saw the mentor in him always pushing me into politics and

me always refusing. He never asked people who they voted for when they asked for his help. He just helped when he could. I can testify to the many people who he assisted over the years. Over the years we grew very close and became family being in each other's homes. A man who instilled confidence in people all the time. A man who freely shared his experience, expertise, wisdom and knowledge. As we pick up the pieces, we will continue the work we started with him and continue his legacy of goodwill,” cited Pandaram. The Democratic Alliance Caucus Leader in KwaDukuza, Cllr Madhum Sing said Motala became a voice of reason for the IFP in KwaDukuza Municipality Council, “During this period we also disagreed with the IFP in some cases like the

recent council budget and tariff increase the DA did not support citing lack of service delivery, poor performance and affordability. Despite our concerns the IFP supported the budget. As the DA despite our differences we maintained a good working relationship with the IFP. Definitely late councillor Moosa Motala will leave a void in his party and council. Late councillor Moosa Motala was recently appointed as an Exco member in KwaDukuza and he seemed happy with the full time position. His death comes as a shock to the community of KwaDukuza and the iLembe region. As the DA we believe he had an illustrious political career in local government. On behalf of the DA we wish the family strength and prayers to cope with this sad untimely loss,” uttered Sing.

KDM crime prevention rolls out multidisciplinary op KWADUKUZA: KDM Traffic and Crime Prevention Officers were out in full-force on Monday as they descended on KwaDukuza CBD to monitor, enforce law and order near King Shaka Monument on Cooper Street. Efforts to rebuild town of Maphumulo

Women “well represented” in iLembe District

IN CHARGE: KwaDukuza Mayor, Cllr Dolly Govender

By Xpress Reporter

While many South African women still feel somewhat more disadvantaged than the average man, the ANC in the General Gizenga Mpanza Region has been steadfast in its endeavours to achieve gender equality. The ruling party has a publically-stated policy to deploy an equal number of men and women in leadership positions, at least as much as that can realistically be achieved under conditions of open contestation for positions, and the many other correlated factors.. Ilembe District consists of five municipalities, viz the district municipality (iLembe), KwaDukuza LM, Mandeni LM, Maphumulo LM and Ndwedwe LM. Each municipal council has three very important and strategic

principal political principals that actually run council, a s s i s t e d b y t h e administration. These key political positions are: 1) The Mayor 2) The Deputy Mayor 3) The Speaker Now, let us examine how ANC has deployed its cadres, according to gender representation, in these highly coveted, central positions. In totality there are 15 positions being put under the microscope. The Office of the Mayor: In this position we have Dolly Govender in KwaDukuza Municipality, and Zibuyisile Khuzwayo-Dlamini in Maphumulo Municipality. That is two out of 5. The Office of the Deputy Mayor: In this position we have Dolly Shandu at the district municipality, Phindile Sishi in Mandeni, Zama Ncalane-Mhlongo in Maphumulo and Zandile Siwetu in Ndwedwe. That is a total of four female deputy mayors, out of five. Impressive indeed! The total number of female principals now stands at six out of fifteen. Office of the Speaker: This is a very important position in the

composition of municipal councils, although less prominent than that of the mayor. In this position we have Lindy Nhaca at KDM……and that's it! In a nutshell, ANC has managed to deploy SEVEN female political principals to the five municipal councils in iLembe District, which are all controlled by the party. That means the remaining eight principals are male. The score of 7/15 is actually not too contemptible, considering the history of our country, which saw black women, in particular, suffering a two-fold blow under the previous regime: apartheid oppression AND patriarchy. This score is laudable. But still, there's plenty room for improvement. Nevertheless, there are other ways to achieve gender parity other than the topmost positions mentioned. For example, each council has an executive committee (EXCO), and of course there are the ward councillors and the proportional representative councillors. Plenty of opportunity for political parties to do the right thing, to fix the discrepancies of the past.

REBUILD: Pictured are some of the participants at the stakeholders engagement meeting

Maphumulo Local Municipality led by Mayor Zibuyisile KhuzwayoDlamini alongside Deputy Mayor Zama NcalaneMhlongo, Speaker Simphiwe Shange and councillors held a stakeholders engagement meeting in response to the recent civil unrest on Wednesday 11 August 2021 at the Maphumulo Town Hall. In the past few weeks the

country experienced an eruption of a civil unrest that has hit the province of KwaZulu-Natal and other parts of the country, which led to violence, looting and vandalism of property and key infrastructure. “Maphumulo Local Municipality was also not spared from this civil unrest as our Municipality also experienced barricading of our main roads, looting and the destruction of property of

various businesses in our town,” the municipality said in a statement. On Wednesday last week the municipality engaged various stakeholders with the intention to strongly affirm the call for calm and stability in Maphumulo and a renewed call on all stakeholders and residents to join hands to avoid such acts in the community, going forward.

Local resident reaches out to the needy

RELIEF: Angels of Love recently hosted a successful food drive in Stanger Manor LOVE: Amy Naidoo, the founder of Angels of Love

By Xpress Reporter

Local resident Amy Naidoo is a woman with a heart of gold, and a caring soul. She is a woman who believes in spreading love…..love for humanity, and a passion for the welfare of fellow human beings.

Naidoo, the founder of charity organization Angels of Love, believes that spreading love is the way to go for humanity. Her charity organization strives to provide relief to the needy, as the country battles to recover from the devastating effects of the lockdown, compounded of late by looting and destruction. “My aim is to help the community by sustaining families in the KwaDukuza area during Covid-19 that have become suddenly unemployed during the recent unrest. I want to bring Ubuntu back to our community by bringing love to the community. My project is for everyone, irrespective of race or religion. We

are a Rainbow Nation,” Naidoo enthuses. On Sunday the 08th of August 2021, the Angels of Love held a food initiative at the Stanger Manor bus terminal, which saw many needy families collecting food parcels to help ease their suffering in this difficult period. Naidoo urges anyone who wishes to make a difference during these harsh times to make a donation. To make a donation through the Angels of Love, Amy Naidoo can be contacted on (076) 620-9292. “Life in not always fair, but God is always faithful,” is one of Naidoo's favourite quotes. Well done to all involved.

ANCWL revives “One Home One Garden” project By Xpress Reporter

A twin challenge of prolonged Covid-19 lockdown coupled with the recent, devastating civil unrest has left many women in a far worse position than they were already in. This concern has been raised by the leadership of the ANC Women's League in the General Gizenga Mpanza Region (GGMR). This comes as the country continues to observe Women's Month amid a deepening socioeconomic crisis, with women being the worst affected. Exacerbating the suffering of many women in the current gloomy epoch, the League points out, is the persistent threat of gender based REVIVAL: The regional chairperson of violence, which together with the ANC Women's League, Zibuyisile inequality, joblessness and deeper Khuzwayo-Dlamini levels of poverty, has placed women “What we seek to achieve through in an extremely untenable position. Nation called upon to vaccinate The Department of Health Deputy Director-General, Dr Nicholas Crisp, has expressed concern that the demand for the COVID-19 vaccine has decreased. “We are disappointed that COVID-19 vaccination registrations are decreasing. The daily registration yesterday was only 53 379. The total registration so far is 9 237 340,” Crisp said on Friday. Addressing a media briefing on government efforts in the fight against COVID-19 and the national vaccination rollout programme, Crisp encouraged people to get vaccinated, as vaccines are effective and are safe. “There will be a fourth wave but we don't know when or which variant or how severe it will be, but we have to protect ourselves by vaccinating. The age group of 35 to 49 years had a good start but have not sustained their interest,” Crisp said. According to the statistics for COVID-19 registrations, 3 035 017 people in the age group 35 - 39 years old have registered; 1 929 586 have registered in the age group 50 - 59 years, while in the above 60 age group, 3 459 374 have registered for the

vaccine and 813 363 health workers have also registered” he added. South Africa has to date administered 9 185 756 vaccines, with 2 021 520 people receiving the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, while 7 164 236 have received the Pfizer vaccine. By the end of December, the country needs to have vaccinated 28 million people. “A total of 5 227 525 people have received their first Pfizer dose for the vaccine and of those, 1 936 711 have received their second dose of the vaccine. Individuals who have been vaccinated amount to 7 249 045 and of those individuals, 3 958 231 have been fully vaccinated,” Crisp said. Female individuals continue to vaccinate in their numbers, accounting for 59.74% of the vaccines that have been administered, while males account for 40.26%. National Immunisation Safety Expert Committee chair, Prof Hannelie Meyer, said the vaccines that are being used in the country are safe, as all vaccines are tested during three phases of clinical trials before they are approved.

Premier says KZN has entered Covid-19 third wave 120 schools report cluster infections By Xpress Reporter

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala says the province has officially entered the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. This comes as the province continues to record an average of 3000 new infections daily, for the past several days. Zikalala was briefing the media on the latest developments regarding the Covid-19 pandemic, at the weekend. The premier said the province is now consistently recording the second highest daily infections in the country, after Western Cape. Even more shocking, is the number of active cases, which the premier said was well above 40 000 and climbing. “Our third wave appears to be due to the sustained increase in the rate of new

infections. The surge in cases appears to have been driven, in the main, by: • The recent large gatherings by people

engaging in looting and destruction of property; and • An increase in interprovincial travel; and • Large gatherings at pubs

and restaurants. “The province has also had an increase in the incidence risk from 116 - 131 cases per 100 000 population group.

The increase occurred in eight districts, with the exception of Amajuba, UThukela and UMzinyathi; while EThekwini, UMgungundlovu, Ilembe, King Cetshwayo and Zululand observed a drastic increase in cases. “The number of hospitalizations is also increasing steadily in both the public and private health facilities, with some facilities reporting extremely high occupancy rates in ICU beds. The Department is looking at alternatives in expanding ICU bed capacity,” he said. In spite of the growing number of infections, Zikalala indicates the province still has a sufficient number of hospital beds, to cater for admissions. He adds that the province has also kept operational all of its field hospitals that were utilised during the 1st and the 2nd waves. “We have also established a roving team of highly-skilled

people, such as epidemiologists, public health specialists, medical experts, infection control experts, and nursing professionals, to assist districts that are experiencing a surge in cases. Our oxygen capacity is also continuously being assessed, in order to identify pressure points and ensure early intervention where necessary. “We are urging citizens of KwaZulu-Natal to go to their nearest health facilities if they're not feeling well, in order to reduce the number of home deaths and patients dying on arrival at our health care facilities. We also want to stress once again that compliance with nonpharmaceutical measures such as the wearing of masks, regular hand washing with soap and water, and social distancing, (remains critical),” Zikalala concluded..

Four firearms recovered during operation SEIZED: On Friday, 13 August 2021, KwaZulu-Natal SAPS conducted a special joint operation which led to arrest of 15 suspects for various cases such as illegal possession of firearm, possession of dangerous weapon as well as immigration act. According to KZN SAPS Spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, four firearms with 56 rounds of ammunition were seized by POLICE.

remarkable and well-deserved. In front of a roaring sold-out home crowd, goals from Sergi Canos and Christian Norgaard ensured Bees' boss Thomas Frank gets the Premier League start he deserves. PSG almost stutter in league opener after successful transfer window (PSG 4-2 Strasbourg) Paris Saint-Germain lured five superstars to France in the transfer window: Achraf Hakimi, Georginio Wijnaldum, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Sergio Ramos, and Lionel Messi. However, marquee signing Messi along with Ramos and Donnarumma, did not make their debut at home against Strasbourg. PSG took a 3-0 lead, but the visitors scored two goals in quick succession to make it a nervy ending for the home side. Poor match officiating causes upset in Mamelodi Sundowns' MTN8 win against rivals Kaizer chiefs (Sundowns won 2-1 on penalties) It was a scintillating encounter that ended 2-2 in regular time, and even extra-time could not separate the Premier Soccer League giants. Instead, veteran goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene made four brilliant saves in the penalty shootout and scored one as well. However the 36-year-old was off his line during the shootout. To add to that, counterpart Itumeleng Khune also made a save that did cross the goal line, which angered the Sundowns bench as the officials signalled it to be no goal.

Manchester United made a solid statement to the rest of the Premier League as they cruised to an emphatic win against Leeds United on the opening weekend. Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns claimed a controversial MTN8 quarter-final penalty shootout victory against rivals Kaizer Chiefs. Manchester United were once again playing in front of 75 000 roaring fans at the Theatre of Dreams as the Premier League opening weekend kicked off on Saturday at lunchtime. Fernandes claimed the match ball for his superb hat-trick while Paul Pogba was at his very best with four assists in a single match, surpassing his best of three Premier League assists for the entire campaign last season. Ruzaigh Gamildien continues his scoring form, Dube Birds knock out neighbours Buccaneers (Swallows FC 2-1 Orlando Pirates). At the tailend of last season, he was touted with a transfer to Amakhosi for his goalscoring heroics that saw Swallows claim a top-six finish. However, it did not come to fruition. The Cape Townborn forward made sure that he continued where he left off as he scored a brace to knock out defending MTN8 Champions Orlando Pirates. Brentford return to top-flight football for the first time in 74 years (Brentford FC 2-0 Arsenal) It was written in the stars. The Bees are back, and it only took 74 years, but their 2-0 win against Arsenal was
