KDM completes successful Environmental Awareness Programme
T
he KwaDukuza Municipality's Environmental Management section on Friday, 13 September 2019, completed a successful Urban Greening and Environmental Awareness Programme targeting institutions of learning and health in the KwaDukuza municipal area as part
of the broader Arbor Week programmes. Explaining the purpose of the programme Ms Nokubonga Duma, Senior Environmental Officer at the municipality, alluded that the municipality was well en route to implementing landscaping projects that would create mutually beneficial relationships between
dwellers and their environment. This would ultimately, assist to combat air and noise pollution, soak up rainwater that may otherwise create flooding and to create habitats for local wildlife. The following institutions were visited, General Gizenga Mpanza Hospital (04 September 2019), KwaDukuza Municipality Civic Building (06 September 2019), Glenhills Primary School (09 September 2019) and Stanger Heights Primary School (13 September 2019). The various attendees of the programme at the various institutions were also enlightened about appropriately disposing waste at their homes. Delivering this talk was Ms Nonzuzo Chamane, the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Experiential Trainee based at KwaDukuza Municipality. She informed the attendees of five easy steps to follow when disposing waste: “Step 1 - Sort your garbage

with a simple compost pile. Once it's completely composted, you can use it in your garden as a rich fertilizer. “Step 5 - Collect any remaining garbage into a trash bag and place it into a garbage bin. Remember to seal the top so that animals won't be able to get into it. Leave the bin in sight for garbage collectors on your pick up day,” concluded Nonzuzo Chamane. Learners at the various schools also got an opportunity to do sketch plays and presentations to enlighten their peers on how environmental issues and pollution could be curbed.
into a few different bins. This can be done quickly by setting up a multi-storage bin in your kitchen so items can be sorted as they are disposed. Step 2 - Sell/donate any garbage that can be reused, such as toys or clothing.” “Step 3 - Take recyclables such as glass, plastics and paper to a local recycling centre. If your neighbourhood has a recycling pick-up, leave it out in the front of your house in plastic bins. Don't use plastic garbage bags as this only contributes to the waste.” “Step 4 - Turn food and garden waste into compost. You can do this

Mandeni Local Municipality council, on 12 September 2019, elected former ANC Regional Secretary Cllr TP Mdlalose as the new Mayor and Cllr BL Magwaza as the new Speaker at a special council meeting held at Sibusisiwe Hall. Addressing the packed hall, Cllr TP Mdlalose stated that his executive committee will work tirelessly to ensure that all pending projects will be completed and that Mandeni will strengthen its pursuit of being a reliable, people-centred and sustainable economic hub by 2030. “The decline in our economy nationally is bound to affect our rise as Mandeni. an environment where everyone can succeed,” said Mdlalose. The new Mayor further condemned the scourge of women and children abuse. “We strongly condemn the ever-rising criminal activities in our community and call for unity within our people so that

CULTURAL WEALTH: Heritage Day is celebrated on 24 September and commemorates the rich cultural diversity of South Africa
By Xpress Reporter
of our nation; and are encouraged to learn more about their culture as well as the national anthem, flag and other symbols of historic national importance. The day, also known as “Braai Day” sees the coming together of families and friends to indulge in the traditional and unique South African Braai. In 1996, former President, Nelson Mandela stated: “When our first democratically-elected government decided to make Heritage Day one of our national days, we did so because we knew that our rich and varied cultural heritage has a profound power to help build our new nation.”
South Africans will celebrate Heritage Day on 24 September 2019 to commemorate the diverse cultures and traditions of the people in our rainbow nation. On this day, people around the country are reminded to unite and embrace the cultural diversity of one another. Various events take place throughout the country to observe this day. The town of KwaDukuza and KwaZulu-Natal comes together to celebrate in commemoration of the Zulu King, Shaka. South Africans of all ages, races and cultural backgrounds unite to celebrate the cultural wealth
An operation conducted by police officers at Nsuze yielded positive results when seven suspects aged between 32 and 54 were arrested for the murder of Duncan Simphiwe Mngoma (36) and attempted murder of a 22-year-old man. It is alleged that on 10 September 2019, the 22-year-old victim was being assaulted by members of the eSidumbini community under the Nsuze policing precinct. According to KwaZulu Natal SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane, he was accused of theft at a homestead in the area. “During the assault, a member
of the community also accused Simphiwe Mngoma of being a thief. He was then assaulted by the mob with wooden sticks, iron rods and spanners until he succumbed to his injuries on the scene,” said Zwane. “The mob attempted to set the 22-year-old alight, however they were not successful. Police were informed of the kangaroo court and responded. Police managed to rescue the 22-yearold and he was taken to a local hospital. Charges of murder and attempted murder were opened by Nsuze police for investigation,” added Zwane.
Feeding scheme for senior citizens The Gueldies reunion members, as part of an outreach programme, have started a feeding scheme for the old age citizens. On Thursday, 12 September 2019, sumptuous meals were served. This feeding scheme will be done on a monthly basis at the community hall. Members make a humble appeal to the public to assist in any way possible. There are other events also planned for the Gueldies community including
a tree planting ceremony and unveiling of a memorial stone on 24 September, a five-a-side tournament planned for 26 October and a family day planned for 14 December. As part of the uplifting programme, funds will be raised to install permanent games for the children. The Significance of Pitri Paksh Pitri Paksh is the remembrance of departed ancestor souls by paying respect through prayers, fasting, performance of special rituals, chanting, fasting and austerity. Offering of water and flowers are common. The origin of the observance is wide and varying because of the diversity of the religion, the many languages, dialects and beliefs. For example, in some cultures, there is great celebration to honor birth, but a solemn atmosphere is created at the time of death. In other cultures, the opposite prevails. The reasons are quite philosophical as well as logical. The important thing is to practice your belief with great faith, love and reverence. During this period, people generally do not start new projects, buildings or start investments. Marriages, engagements, pujas or occasions of merriment are generally postponed until a sufficiently long period has elapsed, usually a year, of their dear departed ones. Most of this is handed down and has become custom and tradition. Many are not aware of its significance and continue to keep observance out of respect as well as out of tradition, based and supported by uncertainty and superstition. It is a case of being better safe than sorry. Today we have so much fear for the "unseen" and for "darkness", but I have to remind you that in today's world, we have to be more wary of the "living" than the "dead". What is visible to our eyes is the creation, and that which cannot be seen is the Creator. We can dialogue with the Creator through the divine intellect or the spiritual eye. The animosity in
society is caused by the vices of anger, greed, arrogance, lust and attachment. The actions performed is judged and graded by the spiritual law of action and reaction. This law is known as the law of karma. This is a spiritual law that dispenses divine justice, and believe it or not, you are judge and jury of your own actions. You are the architect of your own destiny. You have to settle your own karmic accounts. You have to have mercy on your own self. Your next birth is based on your karmic accounts. Human souls remain as human souls, for there is no interchange with other lower living species. The quality of life may differ, but rebirth is in the human form. In the golden age, souls exercise the highest level of purity, whereas in the Iron Age, souls become degraded and dehumanized and experience the most gross form of impurity. In conclusion, people should not worry if they have not fulfilled all their earthly expectations to their close relatives or society. They should practice the art of being detached, but loving to their close relations. They should practice the remembrance of God at all times and more so in their mature years of life. This practice will assist you in the remembrance of God when you are leaving your body. It is said that your inheritance in your next birth depends on the intensity of this remembrance of God in your last thoughts. We have the practice of remembering all the earthly treasures and the future of relatives in our twilight years and at the time of leaving the body. Double victory for MOB
Manor Old Boys smiling after double victory
The acquisition of former Darnall playmaker, Sherwin Daniels seem to have changed the fortunes of Manor Old Boys as they inflicted double victories over Bethel CC and Sunbrook respectively last week. Games that were scheduled for Thursday, September 5 were washed away and were replayed last Tuesday, September 10. Bethel was considered as early favourites to launch an attack on the league. However, last Tuesday, they came up against a revitalised MOB. The first set seemed evenly matched with the leader board changing all the time. The experienced Daniel mad the difference to MOB
and the constant advise of off court Anand Gopalan and ever frisky Dino Moodley spurred MOB to a 25-23 victory. Bethel never gave up and came back with a vengeance, hammering MOB 25-8 and the writing was on the wall for MOB. Daniel rose to the occasion once again, motivating the players and steered MOB to a thrilling 2624 victory (third set is normally completed at 15). If this was not enough, MOB came up against Sunbrook, who recently toppled top of the table Darnall United. The euphoria of their victory over Bethel seemed to be enhanced as
MOB put in a five star performance against Sunbrook. Sunbrook drew first blood, disposing MOB 25-22 to claim the first set. MOB bounced back and drew level in a hard fought battle, winning 25-23. They kept the momentum going in the final set as they dominated claiming victory 15-10. There were congratulatory notes coming from all quarters in the turn around by MOB with players expressing their admiration to Daniel as player, Gopalan as administrator and the evergreen Dino Moodley as motivator for the success of Manor Old Boys.

The legendary Moon Raman, a stalwart of non racial sport
A fortnight ago saw the passing away of Moonsamy (Moon) Raman at the ripe old age of 86 years. Born and brought up in the sugar-milling estate of Gledhow, he served non-racial sports for over half a century both as a player and administrator in the mainstream codes of football and cricket. His was a life of giving of his time at the expense of his family, a commodity rare to exceptional individuals. This sacrifice was owing to his passion for sport, particularly in the administration of organized football in the district of Lower Tugela. He served without question or regret. His lasting joy was for the sportspersons' happiness and satisfaction and he did not count the costs. He served at a time when all posts held in any organisation were in an honorary capacity and no remuneration
was forthcoming. He held the post of General Secretary of the Lower Tugela Soccer Federation (LTSF) from 1963 to 1968 (7 consecutive years) at the relatively young age of 30 under such esteemed administrators as E.C. Mahomedy and M. (Sunny) Dorasamy and then for another year in 1972. During this period the affiliation of the Federation was at its height and much of the credit is due to the Late Moon Raman. He ensured that fixtures were honoured, the ground/s were ready for play, that matches started on time and referees were appointed. Haroon Mahomedy, a well-known leader in the town, recalls that on one Sunday Raman had to referee all the games that day starting at 9 a.m. and finishing at 5 p.m. as there was no other referee available. Such was the man. Besides his role as a secretary, he served as a senior selector of the Southern Natal Soccer Board in 1969 and 1970. He qualified as a National Referee in 1965 and took control of matches not only in Stanger (KwaDukuza) but also throughout the province, His knowledge of the rules and laws of the game made him a formidable man in the middle who brooked no nonsense but was fair in the application of the laws without fear or favour. He also served as Secretary of the Stanger and District Cricket Union (1966-69) and Secretary of Stanger and District Recreation Grounds Association
Jayce Singh is a former sports administrator and Patron of the KZNCU
(1967-71). On his retirement from active administration, he was elected to the prestigious position of Honorary Life VicePresident of the LTSF, an honour bestowed on people who had served the game with pride and distinction, unselfishly and selflessly. As a player, he represented the Schools FC B team; then became a founder member of the Temple Rangers FC of Gledhow in 1958 and served as Secretary until his playing days were over. His forte was also in community work, especially in the social and cultural fields. He was the interim Secretary of the Stanger Ratepayers' Association in 1960; a founding member of the Stanger and District Association for the Aged where he played a leading role until ill-health forced him to take leave; a member of the Young Temples Musical Group as well as being actively involved in the promotion of Hindu culture through the Gledhow Emperumal Temple. He was the epitome of dedication, selflessness, voluntary service, sound administration based on courage and principles which he espoused fearlessly at a time when our community was hounded by the security police of the apartheid regime. Long live the memory of Moon Raman. May the sporting fraternity of KwaDukuza have many more such individuals to carry his legacy into the future. Hamba kahle and may your soul rest in peace !

XPress Teddies 'Shake-a-Paw' Day at Manor Primary
The Girl Guides Movement of South Africa observed Shake-aPaw (Teddies Enrolment) Day at Manor Primary School last week. These delightful little Teddies (Grades 1 and 2) pledged their allegiance to the Guiding Movement when they recited the Teddy promise and pledge. Mrs Saroj Reddy, the Teddies instructor has faithfully dedicated 24 years to the Guiding Movement of South Africa. Stanger Manor Primary is extremely indebted to her for the sterling work she does to promote Guiding at their school. Mrs Benita Naidoo, her assistant is also commended for her time and sacrifice. Honorary life member, Mrs Marge Reddy, who served for 45 long years, was present to induct the Teddies. Parents and wellwishers were in attendance.
