Family home burned down in Warrenton By Xpress Reporter

Tragedy struck the Nkumo family when their home went up in flames on the night of Wednesday, 9 October 2013 at approximately 7pm. According to the ward councillor, Andrew Gopaul, he received a call from the distraught grandmother for

assistance the following morning. “My team and I assisted the family in every way,” said Gopaul. The grandmother of six grandchildren, Lungile Goodness Nkumo (66), said how thankful she was that none of her family, especially her grandchildren, was trapped in the fire. “My grandson Lungelo and my

other grandchild went outside from the lounge when the fire started and luckily my neighbour called the KwaDukuza Fire Service,” said Nkumo. The Acacia Road, Warrenton residence saw three bedrooms and their bathroom burnt. Investigations are underway as to what caused the fire.

ANC hosts “unmediated” IWC forum By Xpress Reporter

The African National Congress (ANC) held an unprecedented first ever unmediated, forum in the ANC greater KwaDukuza Region at the KwaDukuza Town Hall on Thursday, 10 October 2013. According to the region's liaison officer, Slindile Ngcobo, the forum aimed to address the role of “Indian, Coloured and White” communities within the ANC structures. “Muzi Sithole, ANC Greater KwaDukuza Regional Secretary, gave an analysis on what the Forum would entail and encouraged those in attendance to participate. 'The ANC invited the ICW, the Indians in particular to raise issues that are a hindrance in their participation in the ANC structures,” said Muzi Sithole. The Forum was held a day after the birthday of Kader Asmal of which Sithole reminded the Forum, and said it was wrong that no celebrations were held in honour of Kader Asmal even though he was such a great leader who contributed so much in the struggle against apartheid who came from KwaDukuza. The keynote speaker, ANC KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Secretary, Sihle Zikalala spoke of the history and role of the Indians in the struggle against apartheid. He was cognizant that some Indians reportedly showed reluctance to support ANC. Zikalala spoke of

Qwabe alleges that her daughter called her to separate their neighbours who were arguing and quarrelling. Ngidi opened a case against him and Ndlela (29) was arrested. He is expected to apply for bail this week which is likely to be opposed. Educator Sanjay Maharaj, alleges he was visiting a friend in Oceanview recently. He was attacked by two youths who assaulted him. Double Jeopardy A 16-year-old Maphumulo girl whose wallet was stolen at the Shoprite area found herself at the mercy of a so called Good Samaritan. The 33-year-old offered to help her and suggested she accompany him to his place of residence to pick up money to help her on her way to Maphumulo. Once he arrived at his compound room he suggested she stay the night as it was getting late to travel and leave in the morning. During the night, he got off the floor and raped her as she slept on his bed. When she tried to leave, he threatened her with a knife and forced her to stay. In the morning she heard voices and screamed for help after being unsuccessful in her bid to escape during the night. She was rescued by two members of Alpha Security Services and the culprit was apprehended. He has been remanded in custody pending a bail investigation this week.

KwaDukuza SAPS warn of new criminal behaviour By Xpress Reporter

According to local SAPS media liaison officer, Constable Sbusiso Khumalo, criminals have adopted a new modus operandi when attempting house robberies. The suspects lure unsuspecting victims by “knocking on the door posing as imposters” and then ransacking the household. The following advice is issued by the KwaDukuza SAPS as safety measures and

exercising vigilance: • Please keep all doors locked and windows closed; • Ask the person for an Identity document without opening your door (check through a side window); • Hear if you are familiar with their voice / s; • Use devices like peepholes, CCTV cameras and the like; • Make sure your panic buttons and alarm systems are in working condition; • Be very familiar of your surroundings;

Have you spent too much of your life standing at the corner of worry and angst? You're not alone. I worry that I'm going to spend my golden years broke and living on a park bench, that the funky mole on my husband's back isn't really benign, as his doctor keeps insisting. I worry about climate change, genetically modified foods and BPAin plastics. There's evidence that many people have brains a bit like minestill abuzz in the wee hours with "What if...what if...no, seriously, what if...?" Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness according to the Anxiety and Depression Association. In the age of information overload and up-to-thesecond Twitter feeds, it's not surprising that we feel constantly on high alert, says Friedemann Schaub, MD, PhD, author of The Fear and Anxiety Solution. "The constant barrage of news gives us every little detail of every disaster. Even though there may be nothing dangerous in our immediate environment, we still feel like something bad could also happen to us at any moment," he says. To further complicate matters, this stuff is supposed to give us the jitters. "We're wired to pay attention to things that are scary," says Martin Rossman, MD, author of The Worry Solution. "The number one function of our brain is to keep us alive, so we worry as a way to anticipate possible dangers and problem-solve our way through them. All of us come from vigilant ancestorsif they hadn't been vigilant, they wouldn't have survived." Unfortunately, Rossman adds, we've gotten so good at worrying; we don't always know how to shut it off. The KwaZulu-Natal government structure has seen many a change from the highest levels in terms of positions and the resultant personalities thereof. The Newly elected KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Premier Senzo Mchunu chaired his first Cabinet meeting in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday and welcomed Education Member of the Executive Council (MEC) Peggy Nkonyeni who was appointed earlier in the week. Cabinet reportedly received pockets of public protests in Durban and Richmond, in the Midlands. It condemned the violent nature of some of the

demonstrations and urged law enforcement agencies to move swiftly to isolate criminality in order for genuine service delivery matters to be addressed by the relevant municipalities. Grove End ends KSST reign The Stanger and District EZE's Electrical competitive league came to a nail-biting conclusion on Thursday night with KSST, Randsons and Grove End engaging in a 3-way battle for glory. Grove End caused a major upset when they defeated reigning champs KSST 25-

12, 24-26, 15-13.The score line itself tells a story. Rising talents, Vinny Singh and Sherwin Adyappa from Grove End stole the show yet again and they were backed by veteran Bevlyn Thaver and some superb play by Ronald Poonsamy. This win put Grove End back on top

and with KSST having a game in hand against Warriors Sport, KSST needed to win by a huge margin against Warriors Sport to retain the title. Warriors Sport also had a double header and caused another major upset in their first outing when they defeated Randsons 1925,26-24,16-14, putting Randsons out of contention for the league title and with Warriors Sport registering their first league match victory. KSST were pinning their hopes on trouncing Warriors to bring them on par with Grove End on points, but with a better points ratio.
