Family home burned down in Warrenton By Xpress Reporter

Tragedy struck the Nkumo family when their home went up in flames on the night of Wednesday, 9 October 2013 at approximately 7pm. According to the ward councillor, Andrew Gopaul, he received a call from the distraught grandmother for

assistance the following morning. “My team and I assisted the family in every way,” said Gopaul. The grandmother of six grandchildren, Lungile Goodness Nkumo (66), said how thankful she was that none of her family, especially her grandchildren, was trapped in the fire. “My grandson Lungelo and my

other grandchild went outside from the lounge when the fire started and luckily my neighbour called the KwaDukuza Fire Service,” said Nkumo. The Acacia Road, Warrenton residence saw three bedrooms and their bathroom burnt. Investigations are underway as to what caused the fire.

ANC hosts “unmediated” IWC forum By Xpress Reporter

The African National Congress (ANC) held an unprecedented first ever unmediated, forum in the ANC greater KwaDukuza Region at the KwaDukuza Town Hall on Thursday, 10 October 2013. According to the region's liaison officer, Slindile Ngcobo, the forum aimed to address the role of “Indian, Coloured and White” communities within the ANC structures. “Muzi Sithole, ANC Greater KwaDukuza Regional Secretary, gave an analysis on what the Forum would entail and encouraged those in attendance to participate. 'The ANC invited the ICW, the Indians in particular to raise issues that are a hindrance in their participation in the ANC structures,” said Muzi Sithole. The Forum was held a day after the birthday of Kader Asmal of which Sithole reminded the Forum, and said it was wrong that no celebrations were held in honour of Kader Asmal even though he was such a great leader who contributed so much in the struggle against apartheid who came from KwaDukuza. The keynote speaker, ANC KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Secretary, Sihle Zikalala spoke of the history and role of the Indians in the struggle against apartheid. He was cognizant that some Indians reportedly showed reluctance to support ANC. Zikalala spoke of

47500 allegations made against “Indian” ANC members, in leadership positions, practicing “Gate keeping” (not allowing other “Indians” to join the ANC in order to protect their positions). He also addressed the race card issue when campaigning. “The use of race card when campaigning by some of the political parties was reversing all the good work that has been done since 1994 to ensure harmony amongst all races in South Africa,” said Zikalala. He added that the ANC will always ensure that “Indians” are deployed in government positions in spite of “not receiving huge support from branches in terms of numbers of votes.” The ANC Greater KwaDukuza Regional

Chairperson, Thokozani Msweli, witnessed the facilitator of the Forum, Edwin Pillay, and the chairperson of the panel of the Recommendations Committee, Paul David, in action as the floor was then open to the public for them to raise their concerns. The proposal of creating an Ombudsman position at the Municipalities was taken into consideration and would be implemented, to curb corruption. Businessmen, ratepayers and long standing citizens of KwaDukuza also spoke their mind and this is what some of them had to say… Shain Manjoo, a local businessman and ANC member, said: '”The meeting was reminiscent of the early 90's before South Africa's

first democratic elections. It was wonderful to see old ANC stalwarts such as Paul David and Riaz Meer.” He added that he was impressed with the huge turnout of people who did not want to be referred to as 'Indians, Whites or Coloureds' but as South Africans. Manjoo asked pertinent questions about poor service delivery and mismanagement at all levels of Government. He also queried why there was little or no interaction between local, provincial and national Government departments in the town. Zaf Khan (Member of the local Mayor's Task Team) was more vociferous in his assessment of the 'unmediated' meeting. He said the question of two

Khan also expressed his frustration over the correcting of the so-called Chief Albert Luthuli Upgrade. Another citizen, who wishes to remain anonymous, said that his King Shaka Road community is without streetlights for close to four years now and is fed up with KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM). “Driving up Maphumulo Highway towards Stanger Manor I find more than ten streetlights on 24/7 when my family and neighbours have none.”

Just panel beating When Ntombi Qwabe of Doesburg intervened in a neighbour's quarrel, she ended up being insulted and assaulted by her neighbour. Qwabe alleges that her daughter called her to separate their neighbours who were arguing and quarrelling. When she entered their premises, she alleges that she was slapped and sworn at before being struck on the head with a brick, causing slight injuries to her head. Siyabonga Magwaza (19), a panel beater in the Doesburg area, was granted bail and is due back at court on 28 November. Going downhill Beset with social problems, a middle aged welder who is also unemployed has now resorted to crime. Vincent Naicker of Glenhills alleges that on 1 October he was walking along King Shaka Street after withdrawing R850 from the ATM. He alleges that he spotted the problem-infested man who snatched his cash and fled. The matter was reported to the police and last week Naicker spotted the culprit whom he pointed out to a passing policeman who

arrested him. Pravin Hansraj (42) is due back at court on 21 November 2013. Cheeky buggers Sipho Nhlabati of Clark Road in Dawnside cannot understand the brazen bravado displayed by two men who live nearby. He alleges that he was preparing a meal for himself when he was approached by the two who asked him to purchase them beers. He explained that he had no money on him and they began to search him. On challenging them, one drew a screwdriver and stabbed him in his leg whilst his accomplice searched him and seized his R400 cash before they fled. Police arrested Eugene Mngadi (32) and Sakhile Buthelezi (32). Both were granted bail and are due before court again on 20 November. No winner An argument over the Pirates and Platinum Stars cup final has left one person seriously injured. Buzakhona Ngidi alleges that he intervened in an argument over the teams between two persons who were watching the game on television at a friend's house. After the

match, Ngidi was on his way home when he was confronted by Themba Ndlela who stabbed him 8 times all over his body. He managed to stagger back to his friend's house and was hospitalized. Two days later he returned home and discovered his house was broken into and his food stuffs were scattered all over. His friends informed him that they had questioned Ndlela about the break-in and he returned some of the items. He threatened to stab Ngidi again if he took any action. Ngidi opened a case against him and Ndlela (29) was arrested. He is expected to apply for bail this week which is likely to be opposed. A poor example A student from Netcare Campus and her three male accomplices appeared in court on a charge of malicious damage to property. Educator Sanjay Maharaj, alleges he was visiting a friend in Oceanview recently. He was attacked by two youths who assaulted him. As they were leaving the premises, their friends joined them and they began kicking his vehicle, causing damages estimated at R6000. Evashnee

Naidoo (20), Tanushan Moodley (28), Krenesen Moodley (22) and Mohammed Hassan (18) were granted bail of R1000 each. They are due back at court on 28 November. Double Jeopardy A 16-year-old Maphumulo girl whose wallet was stolen at the Shoprite area found herself at the mercy of a so called Good Samaritan. The 33-year-old offered to help her and suggested she accompany him to his place of residence to pick up money to help her on her way to Maphumulo. Once he arrived at his compound room he suggested she stay the night as it was getting late to travel and leave in the morning. During the night, he got off the floor and raped her as she slept on his bed. When she tried to leave, he threatened her with a knife and forced her to stay. In the morning she heard voices and screamed for help after being unsuccessful in her bid to escape during the night. She was rescued by two members of Alpha Security Services and the culprit was apprehended. He has been remanded in custody pending a bail investigation this week.

N-Force nab daylight robber

KwaDukuza SAPS warn of new criminal behaviour By Xpress Reporter

According to local SAPS media liaison officer, Constable Sbusiso Khumalo, criminals have adopted a new modus operandi when attempting house robberies. The suspects lure unsuspecting victims by “knocking on the door posing as imposters” and then ransacking the household. The following advice is issued by the KwaDukuza SAPS as safety measures and

CANCER AWARENESS: The kids at Buzz Montessori showed their support and commemorated National Bandana day last week

The long-awaited report was finally tabled to council on the renovation and upgrade of the council chambers. Shocking revelations were made where Insimu Investment and Mannes Consulting Engineers were paid R 435 655, 13 for work NEVER executed BUT certified and paid for. How is this possible? It seems as though there was collusion and monies were siphoned in broad daylight. Officials from the municipality failed to play their oversight role in monitoring if there was

any progress on the project while payments were processed. Had council put in checks and balances this disaster would have been avoided or was it deliberate? Although council has taken a decision to blacklist the companies with the National Database of SCM (Supply Chain Management) Defaulters, we believe they should also be reported to the SAPS to investigate a case of fraud. While council further resolved to pursue a civil claim

to both the companies to recover monies, it's wait and see if any or all monies are recovered. Important lessons have been learnt and council need to tighten its internal control and hold officials responsible and accountable for dereliction of duty. There should be no compromise on this. The total renovation and upgrade was completed at a cost of just more than R 1, 1 million. Madhun Sobram Sing DA Caucus Leader

Like I said above, my wife left me for another man with my children. She left me with nothing. As a man without a family, you’re nothing. I tried to buy expensive cars and gifts but nothing changed. That's when I saw Mama Rashim advert in the newspapers and heard people talking about him. I decided to go to him. When I went to see him, he was so friendly and he gave me hope that one day i would get my family back. Although I couldn't believe he prayed because I had no faith. Things started tto change when I started having faith in him. Now I am with my lovely wife and children. He only charged me R200

Thorns of Anxiety

Have you spent too much of your life standing at the corner of worry and angst? You're not alone. I worry that I'm going to spend my golden years broke and living on a park bench, that the funky mole on my husband's back isn't really benign, as his doctor keeps insisting. I worry about climate change, genetically modified foods and BPAin plastics. There's evidence that many people have brains a bit like minestill abuzz in the wee hours with "What if...what if...no, seriously, what if...?" Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness according to the Anxiety and Depression Association. In the age of information overload and up-to-thesecond Twitter feeds, it's not surprising that we feel constantly on high alert, says Friedemann Schaub, MD, PhD, author of The Fear and Anxiety Solution. "The constant barrage of news gives us every little detail of every disaster. Even though there may be nothing dangerous in our immediate environment, we still feel like something bad could also happen to us at any moment," he says. To further complicate matters, this stuff is supposed to give us the jitters. "We're wired to pay attention to things that are scary," says Martin Rossman, MD, author of The Worry Solution. "The number one function of our brain is to keep us alive, so we worry as a way to anticipate possible dangers and problem-solve our way through them. All of us come from vigilant ancestorsif they hadn't been vigilant, they wouldn't have survived." Unfortunately, Rossman adds, we've gotten so good at worrying; we don't always know how to shut it off. The largescale fears can get mixed in with the petty grievances, leaving us drowning in anxiety. So how do you see your way clear? For starters, focus only on what you can control. "Instead of avoiding pain, uncertainty and heartbreak, we should embrace these emotions," says Steven Hayes, PhD, professor of psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno. "They're fundamentally a part of what it means to be human." Ever experience waves of panic when you think about where your life should be? You

should be engaged! You should be pregnant! You should be the boss by now! Social media doesn't help. A Facebook feed full of other people's promotions and adorable children can fuel your sense of falling behind and make you less appreciative of your own success. According to one 2013 study, users felt more envious and less satisfied with their lives after reading their friends' glowing status updates. And the more friends they had, the worse they felt. To free yourself from the compare-anddespair trap, try to harness your "onlyness." • Onlyness is the spot in the world only you inhabita mix of the history, experiences and ideas that make up your life story. If you deny it by engaging in 'comparisonitis,' you'll miss your true value. Next time a friend's progress gives you a pang of sadness, Merchant suggests asking yourself whether that's what you really want right now. If so, make an action plan: Start an online dating profile, sock away an extra R180 a week (R500 a month), and ask for more responsibility at work. But also look at the whole picture: The friend who's expecting her second baby may be envious of your career success. And finally, don't underestimate the power of blooming late. • What if I lose my job: You can't control the job market, but you can shore up your future prospects by networking. If that very word gives you agitation, fear not: The best strategies don't involve schmoozing at a conference; • Pay it forward: "Avoid thinking about networking as a transaction in which you're benefiting. Instead, try to give. One simple way: Stay on top of news and trends relating to your industry, and share interesting articles via e-mail or social media. Your contacts will see you as tapped in and insightful, and they'll consider you a valuable asset should an opportunity arise • Show your support: "If you want to reengage with an old colleague or remind someone you exist, take a minute to endorse her skills on LinkedIn. (Just make sure they're skills you've actually witnessed on the job; otherwise it will seem arbitrary.) It's likely she'll return the favor, which may benefit you: Companies are starting to consider these endorsements when they recruit, seeking out people who have the highest number in a particular area." • Don't forget your coworkers: “I focus on developing more meaningful relationships with my coworkers by carpooling or going for a drink after work. I know I can call on them in a few years if we cultivate that bond.” - Arianna Davis (Oprah.com)

I was in utter disbelief when I edited last week's, 'Invitation to all Indians, Whites and Coloureds to attend a specifically arranged ANC unmediated forum meeting' and to interact with Provincial Secretary of the ANC, Sihle Zikalala. It's like some people are suddenly in charge and lending us a sympathetic ear. I didn't attend because I thought that All Fool's Day had come early and that reporter Vernon was joking, and quite honestly I thought nobody would attend. I felt that no reasonably intelligent person would suddenly like to be reminded that he belongs to a particular race group. This is nothing but 'baaskap mentality' and stinks of racism. Our worldrenowned, esteemed, ailing ex-president Mandela declared very loudly and

Maybe I'm overreacting, but it hurts!! vehemently that 'never shall one race dominate over another in this democracy'. What democracy is this when millions go missing or are squandered without trace? What democracy is this when a leader says that his government has a pact with God and that his party will govern till Jesus returns? What democracy is it when the leader and his overweight cronies can award themselves exorbitant salary hikes at their own whim, while the large majority of his very OWN people are suffering and still walk the streets BEGGING for food and depend on NGO's and a generous public? Such is the nature of power when you make impetuous, irrational statements and live the very opulent, luxurious life you fought to overthrow!!Read George Orwell's Animal Farm and be educated about the secret agendas and subversive activities. But when I read that a few old, seasoned, deep- thinking 'comrades' had attended, I realized that I was wrong, and I was reminded of the memorable words of Robert Bolt in his brilliant play, 'A Man for all Seasons' ,in which Richard Rich says 'Every man

KZN cabinet dogged by public protests By Xpress Reporter

The KwaZulu-Natal government structure has seen many a change from the highest levels in terms of positions and the resultant personalities thereof. The Newly elected KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Premier Senzo Mchunu chaired his first Cabinet meeting in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday and welcomed Education Member of the Executive Council (MEC) Peggy Nkonyeni who was appointed earlier in the week. Cabinet reportedly received pockets of public protests in Durban and Richmond, in the Midlands. It condemned the violent nature of some of the

demonstrations and urged law enforcement agencies to move swiftly to isolate criminality in order for genuine service delivery matters to be addressed by the relevant municipalities. Premier Mchunu took a decision to set up a task team of MECs to look into the protests and report back to C a b i n e t w i t h recommendations. “Service delivery is a priority for our Government and we have an obligation to ensure that all our communities benefit. While we recognize the democratic right enshrined in the Constitution for people to protest, we must draw a bold

When we marched and toy-toyed sideby- side prior to 1994 to fight the regime, nobody told us that we were Indians, Whites or Coloureds and that we should march in another place with different placards. This invitation to me sends out a very strong signal that we ARE all different and we must be prepared to be marginalized and polarized. It tells me that 'somebody is in charge and whatever decision you want to make, it will have to meet their approval' The guest speaker wanted to look at 'the role of the Indians, Coloureds and Whites within ANC structures'. What a load of guff and balderdash is this? Indians were in the forefront of intelligent decision making (Brains Trust) and several were in exile or thrown on the island. 'Come out and speak!' said the invitation. To what avail? For what purpose? might I ask. One has to be very careful when dealing with such sensitive racial issues because we once fought against foe- The apartheid regime!! Keep your thoughts flowing and the letters rolling

Why Your Brain Needs More Downtime (Scientific American Mind) Research on naps, meditation, nature walks and the habits of exceptional artists and athletes reveals how mental breaks increase productivity, replenish attention, solidify memories and encourage creativity. Throughout history people have intuited that such puritanical devotion to perpetual busyness does not in fact translate to greater productivity and is not particularly healthy. What if the brain requires substantial downtime to remain industrious and generate its most innovative ideas? “Idleness is not just a vacation, an indulgence or a vice; it is as indispensable to the brain as vitamin D is to the body, and deprived of it we suffer a mental affliction as disfiguring as rickets,” essayist Tim Kreider wrote in The New York Times.

With Samuli Powder TRUE STORY

Vanessa (40) - Musgrave. We would like to inform the world that it really works as we won the money in Suncoast casino using Mama Madina’s Samuli powder . We first heard about Mama Madina last year but we couldn’t believe it first until last month when our aunt went to her and her life changed after she won a lot of jack pots at suncoast casino. My husband and I were very deep in debts our house was almost going away by the banks our cars were already repossessed, so we decided to try Mama Madina’s Samuli powder we booked an appointment and went to her. She charged us and read out our fortune, we were so surprised when she told us every thing, she even touched the days we met and the reason why we were failing in life. She prayed for us and gave us the samuli powder to use. We began by playing the machines and later went to the tables. Everyone was looking at us. We were winning, we won a lot in the casino. Now that we have money our lives have changed. We paid of our debts bought a new house and now we opening new businesses. We testify out of our faith that Mama Madina has served us all in our family, she is God sent. We regard her as our family mother. Our children are back to good schools. If you are in the same situation don't waste time and money on others just go to Mama Madina she will change your life.

Grove End ends KSST reign The Stanger and District EZE's Electrical competitive league came to a nail-biting conclusion on Thursday night with KSST, Randsons and Grove End engaging in a 3-way battle for glory. Grove End caused a major upset when they defeated reigning champs KSST 25-

12, 24-26, 15-13.The score line itself tells a story. Rising talents, Vinny Singh and Sherwin Adyappa from Grove End stole the show yet again and they were backed by veteran Bevlyn Thaver and some superb play by Ronald Poonsamy. This win put Grove End back on top

and with KSST having a game in hand against Warriors Sport, KSST needed to win by a huge margin against Warriors Sport to retain the title. Warriors Sport also had a double header and caused another major upset in their first outing when they defeated Randsons 1925,26-24,16-14, putting Randsons out of contention for the league title and with Warriors Sport registering their first league match victory. KSST were pinning their hopes on trouncing Warriors to bring them on par with Grove End on points, but with a better points ratio. But this was not to be as Warriors held their own going down 13-25,11-25,denying KSST the league title and giving Grove End their first league title win in eight years. Manager cum coach, Kamal Singh's hard work has finally paid-off.

tyleBump - Set - Dominate Titans

happened in the social league in a long time. Titans came into the game as the favourites having beaten Teachers in their first two round clashes. They started off well like a house on fire. Nashlyn Moodley, Roland Chetty and Lazarus Chetty were beaming with confidence at the opening of the set. However, with Teachers inspirational captain, Nazir Khan showing the way and urging his players on, Teachers settled down to their usual rhythm, clawing their way back into the game with Raja Pillay setting up Peejay Jankipersad and Alvin Moonsamy and Khan who matched the Titans outfit. However, Titans held on in the first set to narrowly win 25-22. T e a c h e r s determination showed in the second set as they changed game plan and brought in Stallone Govender to bolster their play making. Their tactics worked as Dees

Bhowani and Nishen Govender were in fiery form with Khan proving to be a thorn in Titans flesh. This closely fought second set was eventually won by

Teachers 25-23, forcing the game into the third and crucial final set. With renewed vigour, manof-the-match Khan and Teachers never looked back

as they scampered to a well deserved 15-12 victory that put them joint top spot with Titans. Teachers have now remained unbeaten in the third round of league fixtures

and have added pressure on Titans to win all their remaining games. Any of Teams that falter will hand the title on a silver platter to their rivals.

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel won the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday but was made to wait for his fourth successive Formula One title after Ferrari's Fernando Alonso finished fourth. The 26-year-old German's fourth win at Suzuka in the last five years left him with a lead of 90 points over Alonso with four races, and a maximum 100 points, remaining. Vettel's Australian team mate Mark Webber, who had started on pole position, finished 7.1 seconds behind in a Red Bull one-two with Frenchman Romain Grosjean taking third place for Lotus on a sunny

afternoon at the Honda-owned track. It was a tough day for Mercedes, who lost Lewis Hamilton as a contender in the first corner. As Grosjean came down the inside Hamilton was pinched between the two Red Bulls as they struggled for momentum. As Vettel had to move left to avoid the Lotus he clipped the Mercedes' rightrear tyre with his left front-wing end plate. Hamilton limped to the pits with a puncture, resumed, but soon retired as the resulting aerodynamic damage was costing him more than a second a lap. Vettel's fourth win in Japan

brings him to 297 points in the standings to Alonso's 207, which means he can clinch the title at the next round in India by finishing fifth Number One: Sebastian Vettel celebrates after winning the Japanese GP or higher, regardless of what the Spaniard does.
