KWADUKUZA: SADTU in KwaDukuza Branch held its SSC meeting and celebrated its 30th anniversary on 11 November 2020 at Stanger Manor Hall
By Thokozani Mnguni
S
outh African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) in KwaDukuza Branch held its SSC meeting to discuss matters faced by workers on 11 November 2020 at Stanger Manor Hall. The union also used the occasion to celebrate its 30th anniversary and reflects on the union's setbacks and achievements. SADTU was launched on 06 October 1990 in Johannesburg with an objective to bring change and eradicate all forms of discrimination in the education sector. Speaking to attendees, SADTU Regional Secretary Zakes Gumede touched on the boiling matter of corruption that clouds South Africa's Democracy, “South Africans are very angry about corruption, a constant theme in South African political debate. This was underlined recently by news that well-connected people had enriched themselves at the expense of efforts to contain Covid 19. What is not real is the widespread belief that corruption is both new and easy to fix. In reality, however corruption has been a constant feature of South African political life for much of the past years and we should begin to ask ourselves as to why corruption enjoys so much media in SA,” said Gumede Gumede further alleged that the department of education
in KwaZulu is the most disrespected department, stating that the department has been turned into money making scheme at the expense of educators, “SADTU was at the forefront of castigating the then MEC of Education in KZN, Mthandeni Dlungwane for oversupplying of sanitary pads in school. It was glaring that the project was aimed at enriching certain individuals instead of assisting needy learners. Today we find ourselves in a similar ordeal, where the department of education in KwaZulu Natal led by MEC Kwazi Mshengu uses covid19 to enrich certain individuals. Today we can say without fear that KZN education seriously lack sober minded leadership,” added Gumede Chairing the meeting SADTU
Secretary in KwaDukuza branch Nduduzo Ngcobo reminded SADTU members that the union is still spiteful over alleged lack of transformation at Stanger Secondary School. It alleged that the school lacks racial diversity in school management. Before wrapping up the meeting SADTU members held a moment of silence for Covid 19 victims and congratulated USA Vice President Kamala Harries and President elect, Joe Biden, is hailed as one of the few white people in the US who were against the Apartheid regime in South Africa.

KWADUKUZA: Newly Elected KwaDukuza Municipality Mayor Cllr Dolly Govender and other Municipal Officials during Mayoral Imbizo held at KDM Supper Room on 11 November 2020
By Thokozani Mnguni
On 11 November 2020, KwaDukuza Municipality held a meeting with ward 19 residents, the meeting was part of Mayoral Imbizo that is currently being rolled out in various wards of KwaDukuza. According to KwaDukuza Municipality the ongoing Mayoral Imbizo is aimed at bringing government closer to the people, whereby the Municipality interacts with communities regarding upcoming service delivery projects in their areas and progress on existing ones. It also affords the public a platform to raise their concerns to the Municipal leadership. Various department in the
Municipality used the occasion to unpack completed and future service delivery projects and programmes. KwaDukuza CBD Regeneration, KDM Covid 19 Debt Relief Scheme, Indigent support, Installation and restoration of Street lights, Acquisition of vehicles for KDM law enforcement and crime prevention were parts of the projects outlined by the Municipality that are set to be rolled out soon. The Municipality further acknowledged that it has challenges of scarcity of land for human settlement development, aging roads and storm water infrastructure and Unavailability of fund. When granted an opportunity
to engage with the Municipal officials, ward 19 and surrounding residents wiped the floor with KwaDukuza Municipality officials, alleging that KDM decelerate when it comes to rendering service delivery, Notha Maphumulo one of the concerned resident applauded the Municipality for resurfacing roads in the CBD but criticized the Municipality for leaving the roads unmarked after revamps, “Our streets are being turned into scrap yards, kindly look into the matter. The matter of street lights is another issue, many streets in the area are pitch black at night because street lights are not working,” added Maphumulo Disgruntled residents further
urged the Municipality to refrain from using the ongoing Covid 19 Pandemic as a scapegoat for its alleged failure in service delivery. Prem Maharaj a well-known Community Activist said KDM officials must go to the people and see the conditions that people are living in, “It has become a norm for government officials to use Covid19 pandemic as a shield for failing to deliver services to the people. KDM officials must get out and see what people are going through because of incompetency in the Municipality. Potholes, Lack of street lights are some of the problem the community of KwaDukuza faces,” said Maharaj ILembe District Municipality also joined the meeting and revealed ongoing projects and challenges they're facing as a district Municipality. High rates of illegal connections by consumers, aging infrastructure, lack of tools of trade, theft and vandalism of infrastructure these are challenges faced by ILembe District Municipality. The mentioned challenges often led to back lock for service delivery. In conclusion KwaDukuza Municipality Mayor Cllr Dolly Govender thanked the resident and said all their concerns were noted and will be looked at.

Mandeni Municipality, 'Jobs not for sale’
MAYOR: Mandeni Local Municipality Cllr Thabani Mdlalose warns that jobs are not for sale at Mandeni Municipality
Mandeni Local Municipality has weighed in on the continuous issue of people conning job seekers to make payments to get employment from the municipality. Mandeni Local Municipality Mayor Cllr Thabani Mdlalose said Mandeni Municipality as a government entity and
probably even the private sector does not require job seekers to pay in order to be employed, “Through the Anti-fraud and Corruption Hotline, it has come to our attention that there may be a syndicate which is coordinated or led by a bogus name with no surname and many others who are
claiming to be employed by the Mandeni Municipality. Mandeni Municipality wants to categorically state that there are no such employees and they are fraud employees who are hell bent to rip off those who are in desperate need for being employed. Members of the public or community members are

requested to never pay or offer to pay someone for them to be employed whether by the municipality or anywhere,” said, Mdlalose In the past Mandeni Municipality warned locals to refrain from entertaining people who use the municipality's name to rob people, “It should be noted that the municipality has a clear policy or procedure in employing people, the posts are openly advertised, and then shortlisted applicants are invited to undergo the same process of being assessed for the suitability for that post. There also be no way that a person who has not been employed yet can be required to pay for training or uniform, in actual fact, employees do not pay for employment training and uniform. Government or municipal jobs are not for sale and therefore if someone demands some payment from you to be employed, you must report that person to the nearest police station or call our Anti-Fraud and Corruption Hotline,” added the Mayor

MACAMBINI: On 30 October 2020, Mathubesizwe High School opened an in-house internet café for students and teachers alike. This follows after the school did well by winning the prestigious International Moot Court competition in Poland by beating USA last year. Following the win, the school garnered a lot of support from even the local Municipality which donated ten laptops earlier this year. In a bid to repeat the feet again, the school has already started preparing the 2020/21 YCAP team which they hope will emulate the success of the previous candidates sent to the competition.

Councillor's corner: Community Hall a victory for the DA Kwadukuza Municipality's Civil Engineering and Human Settlements Capital Expenditure Report dated 16th October 2020, shows that a total budget of R84 981 330 was adopted and approved by Council for the business unit on 29th May 2020. Of the total Civil Engineering and Human Settlements' Capital Budget, the Business Unit has already spent R21 082 738 as at the end of September, making up 25% expenditure of the Capital Budget. The Democratic Alliance is overjoyed to note the substantial progress that has been made in the construction of the Mellow Wood Community Hall in Shakaskraal, one of the Capital Projects with a total budget of R3 778 996. The DA's ex Ward Councillor for Ward 28, Ann McDonnell, championed the proposal for the construction of this community hall as far back as 2013 when she was the Ward Councillor. “We wanted a Community Hall that would be affordable and easily accessible to all the residents of the area for their community weddings, parties and events. We are excited to see that it is finally taking shape.” She says. As at 16th October 2020, the Mellow Wood Hall project was at 66% expenditure and despite delays brought about by the Covid 19 pandemic, is nearing completion.
Residents will now be able to enjoy the benefits of a suitable and affordable community facility. I therefore urge the community to participate in the upcoming Mayoral Izimbizo, which is a road show undertaken by Kwadukuza Municipality in the preparation for the 2021/2022 Integrated Development Plan (IDP) Review Process. The newly elected Mayor, Cllr Dolly Govender, will be at these meetings which are an opportunity for the Council to interact with residents about service delivery issues. The IDP is a very important process and the blue print of any municipality used to plan future development. I encourage all residents to get involved in this public participation process and contribute towards making sure that the right projects and services are prioritised for the next financial year in the ward. The details of the Mayoral Imbizo are as follows: Ward: Ward 28 Date: 01 December 2020 Venue: Shakaskraal Secondary School Time: 14h00 For any assistance with service delivery concerns or suggestions please do not hesitate to contact me on 081 210 8302 or email cllrbulelwa@gmail.com. Liverpool great Ray Clemence dies aged 72
A goalkeeping legend, the late Ray Clemence
Kenny Dalglish led the tributes to ray Clemence on Sunday after the former Liverpool and England goalkeeper, a key member of three European Cup winners team, died aged 72. Clemence, who was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 2005, was one of the finest 'keepers of his generation, winning a host of trophies during 14 glittering years at Liverpool. An 18,000 signing from Scunthorpe in 1967, Clemence was part of the Liverpool team which won

the club's first ever European Cup in 1977. He also played in their 1978 and 1981 European Cup final triumphs and won the UEFA Cup in 1973 and 1976. Liverpool clinched five First Division titles with Clemence between the posts, while he also won the 1974 FA Cup and the 1981 League Cup during his time playing for Bill Shankly and his successor Bob Paisley. Clemence left for Tottenham in 1981 aged 32, for a fee of 300,000 and won another UEFA Cup and the FA Cup in his seven-year stay in north London. Clemence won 51 England caps, but would have had many more had he not been competing with Peter Shilton, who accumulated 125, for the number one shirt. After retiring in 1988, Clemence served on the Tottenham coaching staff, managed Barnet and then worked as England's goalkeeping coach under Sven-Goran Eriksson.

Bubbles and the boss: 5 things we learned from the IPL The 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) finished with the Mumbai Indians thrashing Delhi Capitals by five wickets to clinch their fifth title last Tuesday. 'Smiles back' Delhi coach Ricky Ponting admitted he was “sceptical” about the tournament going ahead during the pandemic, but in the event he said it was “extremely well run”. After nearly a six-month delay as India's coronavirus crisis grew, the 53-day tournament finally got under way in the United Arab Emirates, where it took place in strict bio-secure “bubbles” and at three empty stadiums. Despite the unusual conditions, Mumbai paceman Jasprit Bumrah said he was happy to be part of a tournament that brought the “smiles back” to cricket fans. The teams felt the strain of life in a bubble with Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli and England's Eoin Morgan both saying it can be mentally tough on players. Tale of two skippers Kohli and Rohit Sharma were both appointed IPL captains for their teams in 2013, but eight years down the line their leadership has met with contrasting results. While Sharma bagged his fifth title for Mumbai Indians, an IPL crown eludes Kohli's Bangalore. After finishing bottom of the eight-team table last year, Bangalore made the play-offs this season, an achievement that didn't stop former Kolkata captain Gautam Gambhir calling for Kohli to step down. But former India opener Virender Sehwag backed Kohli, saying the “captain
Kagiso Rabada, IPL's leading wicket keeper
is only as good as his team”. 'Universe Boss' at 41 Chris Gayle, the ultimate bighitter, wasn't introduced until midway through the tournament by Kings XI Punjab but he immediately injected life into their faltering campaign with some explosive batting. The 41year-old amassed 288 runs in seven innings, including two match-winning fifties. The lefthander went past 1000 T20 sixes, extending his runaway record, with a heave over mid-wicket off Rajastan Royals fast bowler Kartik Tyagi, 19. The flamboyant Gayle, who modestly calls himself “Universe Boss”, said his younger team-mates had urged him: “Don't retire” Speed guns Fast bowlers aren't often the heroes in T20 games in the subcontinent. But the UAE pitches gave the pacemen a chance to shine. Delhi's Anrich Nortje bowled the fastest ball in IPL history at 97 mph, and fellow South African quick Kagiso Rabada finished as
the leading bowler with 30 wickets, Mumbai's pace duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult were second and third in the list of wicket-takers, with 52 scalps between them. India talent Bangalore batsman Devdutt Padikkal made an impact as a confident opening partner to Australia's Aaron Finch, one of an impressive brigade of young Indian players. The 20-year-old left-hander was named the emerging player of the 2020 IPL after scoring 473 runs, with captain Virat Kohli praising his “class and efficiency”. Mumbai Indians batsman Ishan Kishan went better with more than 500 runs en route to lifting the trophy at 22 years of age. Spinners Rahul Chahar (Mumbai), Ravi Bishnoi (Kings XI) and Kolkata quicks Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Shivan Mavi also made their presence felt. Brett Lee, the former Australian bowler now working as a commentator, said “Indian talent stood out”.

Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather will return to the ring with a fight in Tokyo in February 2021, organisers said this past Monday, but who he will and under what rules was left unclear. The retired ex-champ had already dropped hints about the fight, which follows a widely ridiculed 2018 “exhibition” match against a Japanese kickboxer, but organisers offered more details on Monday. It will be part of an event dubbed “Mega 2021” the production committee said. They said it would feature “champion-class” fighters including Mayweather, but gave no further details, including who the welterweight star will face, and under what conditions. Last week the 43-year-old shared a video on Instagram teasing the fight. “Tokyo, Japan,
I'm coming back in 221,” he said in the clip. “I know the Olympics is in Japan in 2021, but me, myself, Floyd 'Money' Mayweather and my team will be doing something big in Tokyo Dome... Japan, I'm on my way.” Mayweather retired three years ago, and although he had previously announced he was “coming out of retirement in 2020, he hasn't been seen in action this year. A legend in the boxing world with an unbeaten 50-0 record, Mayweather is no stranger to Japan, where he fought an exhibition match against MMA star Tenshin Nasukawa in December 2018, the last time he was coaxed out of retirement for a big payday. Mayweather floored the kickboxer less than half his age
three times in the first round before the Japanese fighter's trainer rushed in to stop the fight. Mayweather hinted online that he earned $9 million for the twominute fight. In 2017, Mayweather knocked out mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor in the 10th round of a super-hyped boxing match. And in 2015, he defeated Philippine boxing megastar Manny Pacquiao in their “Fight of the Century”, which largely failed to live up to the hype. Mayweather is believed to have earned an estimated $300 million from the points victory over Pacquiao, which remains the most lucrative fight in history and generated more than $600 million in revenue.
