The Water Crisis Task Team hosted a demonstration with placards and a motorcade leading to iLembe District Municipality o f f i c e s o n T h u r s d a y, 1 2 December 2019. This comes after the recent water crisis in Ocean View, New

Guelderland, Highridge, Blythedale and Lindelani. Last week iLembe Municipality released a statement saying that the water outages are “owing to aged infrastructure which caused breakdowns to our motors and pumps in our water systems.”

During the demonstration on Thursday, numerous residents aired their grievances and handed over a memorandum to Municipal Manager, Mr NG Kumalo.

KWADUKUZA: Local KwaDukuza Businesses join hands with KwaDukuza SAPS against gender based violence

Local Businesses in KwaDukuza joined KwaDukuza SAPS to support 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence - to put an end to violence against women and children. The 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence Campaign is in place to create awareness against abuse and domestic violence, and educate the community on how to fight against abuse, and how the SAPS can

assist any victim of abuse. Two local businesses - identified as Shoo at KwaDukuza Mall, and Wendy's Beauty Salon showed their support towards the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence. Both businesses engaged with KwaDukuza SAPS and assisted in distributing brochures on 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence to create awareness. KwaDukuza SAPS Station Commander,

Brigadier SF Mhlongo urged the community to take a stand against abuse, and not accept any form of abuse. “We urge the community to come and report abuse to KwaDukuza SAPS, and KwaDukuza SAPS can assist the community in putting a stop to Domestic Violence”, she said. “We also appreciate the local businesses in taking a stand together with KwaDukuza SAPS against Violence”, she added.

Memorial wall unveiled in New Guelderland The New Guelderland Reunion Management Team, on the 14 December 2019, unveiled a memorial wall in memory of family who lived and toiled the lands for many years. Many employees have come and gone since the closure of the sugar mill and tributes were paid to the loyal employees who toiled relentlessly on the sugar cane fields of New Guelderland. The New Guelderland Reunion Management Team hosted a successful reunion for all past and present residents of the community on the 10 August 2019. The team have planted trees in the community in memory of the families past and present; the year 1882 to 2014 marks 132 years of Indian occupation in the farming community.

Introduction and Background 1. The recent and much publicized crippling water crisis in our communities has reference. 2. We represent the communities of High Ridge, New Guelderland, Stanger Manor, Glenhills, Warrenton, Blythdale, Lindelani, Doesburg and the Greater KwaDukuza area and have been duly mandated by representatives of these areas at our meetings to forward this memorandum. 3. Our residents have long registered grievances within ILembe Municipality (in vain) about the way ILembe Municipality has prejudiced residents in the management of the water crisis. In recent months, we have found that many of our problems particularly related to the supply of water are worsening and despite many interactions and reassurances little or nothing concrete is being done to remedy the state of service delivery of this very basic commodity largely due to how the Municipality conducts its business. 4. We know and understand government policy which includes but are not limited to fighting poverty, inequality, creation of jobs and the provision of basic services to the community. 5. We feel that the latter is a matter of grave concern and in conflict also with the Constitution of our Country and Chapter 2 of the Bill of Rights Section 27 on Health Care, Food, Water and Social Security. 6. The water crisis in the High Ridge and surrounding areas has progressively worsened over time. Areas are without proper water services for days or weeks on end and attempts to elicit answers and information about the crisis and efforts made to restore services is always met with half truths and attitudes which need not be expanded here, except to say that it is unacceptable. As diligent rates paying residents we cannot endure this any longer and demand that action be taken to offer us recourse. 7. The water problem in High Ridge and surrounding areas now seems to be a regular occurrence which peaks during the festive period. We the residents have been forced to endure a dry Christmas for the past four (4) years. Should the powers that be not attend to the current situation decisively then we are afraid that we will be faced with another festive season without water. 8. Recently we experienced water outages on a rotational basis with the entire Kwadukuza and surrounding areas being affected. Doesburg was the most severely affected area and residents were forced to live without water for weeks on end. Engagements with Municipality 9. During our engagements with you, Honourable Mayor early in November 2019, we enquired about the state of readiness of the new lines that were laid to provide water. We were informed that the lines would be commissioned for operation by the 1st of December 2019. Subsequent to this Mr Elias Bhengu pronounced that the line will take a few more weeks to become operational, contrary to what was communicated at our meeting. Statistics 14. Clearly households have had no water over prolonged periods of time let alone access to sufficient water as envisaged in the right of access in terms of our Constitution. 15. This is demonstrated by the following statistics:HIGH RIDGE: - Was without water from 29th October 2019. Reasons afforded were that there was a burst pipe and there was no standby pump. The area had no water for almost two (2) weeks. As at the preparation of this memorandum (2019/12/12) there is no water in this affected area yet again. - These water disruptions were also during the exam period and many children and homes were unduly affected. - On 30th November 2019 we were informed that the pipe had burst three (3) times after it was repaired. - A meeting was held on the 4th November with you Honourable Mayor and Mr Elias Bhengu to seek a remedy of the ongoing water problems. The explanation given by your department here was that the outages were due to a faulty pump. NEW GUELDERLAND: - Their problems started on 21st October 2019 and water outages would occur between two and three times a week. - From 1st November 2019 until 4th December 2019 there was no water at all. - Protest action by irate residents coupled with the burning of tyres along the R102 prompted the municipality at this stage to dispatch tankers to deliver water. - These tankers were few and far apart often making their rounds at late hours of the night when senior citizens were already retired to bed. - The Pat Bodasingh Area reportedly did not receive water via a tanker for two (2) weeks.

- A private body, Crime Stop Ukukusiza, supplied 4000 litres of water a day to residents. - After media exposure on the 4th December 2019 water was restored. - Since 11th December 2019 water has been interrupted yet again. DOESBURG: - As at the time of the preparation of the memorandum today 12th December 2019 they have no water. - There was no water for 2 weeks in October and for the month of November there was no water for the entire month save for 2 days. - The tanker came once only on 2nd November 2019. LINDELANI: - The area had no water for 3 weeks in November / December - Private individuals provided water for the residents. WARRENTON: - This area has also been affected by the water outages since October 2019. - Presently this area has no water. GLENHILLS: - Murugan Road, Townview Road, Venus Drive, C Section and Happy Valley are the most affected areas with a lack of water services. - No tanker was reportedly dispatched to these areas. - Presently these areas have no water. BLYTHEDALE: - This area has been plagued with water outages since 15th October 2019 and has no water for days sometimes for periods up to seven (7) days. - During this seven (7) day period the tanker was only dispatched for two (2) days leaving the community unattended for the remainder of the period. - A substantial part of the residents are old and infirm and cannot carry water, they were assisted by private security companies present at the time. - The residents were advised that the new reservoir would be ready at the beginning of December 2019 and that would herald the end of their woes. - Blythedale once again has no water as at the date of preparation of this memorandum (2019/12/12). The reason given was that the pipe had burst and staff were tracing the leak. The reservoir has no water. 35. As residents we feel it is now prudent to demand from you Honourable Mayor and your team of managers the following:35.1 Honest and reliable information on when our water supply will be returned to normal without regular and unannounced disruptions 35.2 An assurance in writing that the water disruptions will not run into the coming festive season. 35.3 What are the municipality's plans in terms of a maintenance plan for the infrastructure? 35.4 Are there spares in store to meet the needs of the municipality during breakdowns or do you order them on an ad hoc basis? 35.5 Will there be safeguarding of our key installations to prevent theft and vandalism. 35.6 Who are the service providers for spares and services and have they been accredited as reliable and proficient in the fulfilling of their duties. 35.7 Whether plans exist to employ local and skilled service providers. 35.8 Training and development of staff (this includes discourteous staff at both queries and payment sections) in communication skills as the elderly and financially challenged are poorly treated. NB. The private security guards have reportedly been accused of getting in on the act of abusing members of the public. 35.9 The establishment of a fully functional and staffed call centre manned by competent personnel. 35.10 How many of the senior management charged with water affairs are resident locally. 35.11 The municipality must engage with local competent businesses that have offered their guidance and assistance in overcoming the water problem. 35.12 Consideration must be given to waiving sewer charges for water outages experienced by all residents. 35.13 The provision of 10 kilo litres of water to all residents at no extra charge. 35.14 Immediate finalization of the new line for the provision of water in our areas. Conclusion 36. We trust that you will study our memorandum and offer us a response with seven (7) working days where after we intend to take further action as described above. In saying this we hope that it would not be necessary and look to your co-operation in finding solutions for a better life for the residents of this community.

Setting the record straight Fake post doing its rounds on Facebook attacking me, my family, temple, shop, Diwali function cannot go unchallenged. Those that commented on the post without establishing its accuracy are guilty and many have crossed the line which amounts to hate speech, citing violence and reputational damage. The main author of the post and others have a case to answer. I will first lay charges and then take the matter to equality court to meet out justice. The fake post and hate speech have landed people in jail in our country. Water crisis is an issue that that affects many wards but I have been singled out with clear ulterior motives as we fast approach 2021 elections. To state that “don't phone us with your water stories we not interested” is utter rubbish and unfortunately people bought into it as fact without any verification. As I write many communities are not receiving water while repairs are carried out. I once again empathise with all communities affected with the water crisis. January 2019 · Five dead in R74 crash - Five people lost their lives in a fatal accident that occurred on the R74 in the early hours of 1 January 2019. Four victims were killed in the crash, while the fifth victim succumbed to his injuries days later. · SAPS recover body of missing woman KwaDukuza SAPS Community Service Centre (CSC), Serious and Violent Crime Unit led by Captain S. Bruwer, together with Umhlali K9 Search and Rescue led by Sergeant Clinton Odayer and K9 Dante worked tirelessly to dig up a newly cemented floor in the home of missing person, Zandile Mhlongo (35) after her family had reported her missing. After several hours of digging the newly cemented floor, members of the SAPS discovered a body in a shallow grave. The body was later identified as the body of Mhlongo.

NRCF combats GBV through sports TOURNAMENT: Njabulo Ricardo Charity Foundation will host a soccer tournament on the 26 December 2019 in Kwa-Chili Sports Ground, Macambini.

In a bid to fight gender based violence in our societies, the Njabulo Ricardo Charity Foundation will host a soccer tournament on the 26 December 2019 at Kwa-Chili sports ground in Macambini. According to the chairperson of the foundation, Ricardo Mthembu this is the foundation's strategic plan to voice its concerns over the resurgence of gender based violence, “We are mobilizing through soccer, we say women and children must not be abused, gender base violence must not be allowed in our communities. Join us on the 26 December 2019 Kwa chili sports ground. We start at 9, the awards function will start at 15:00 with entertainment. Macambini says no to violence against women,” said Mthembu in a statement. The community of Mandeni is urged to come out in their numbers and be part of this historic tournament in Macambini.
