MEC condemns violent protests By Xpress Reporter
T
he KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda has strongly condemned the violent public protests that have occurred throughout the province. In a statement issued by his office on Wednesday, 10 May 2017, the MEC said policing departments will be out in all areas to curb these violent protests. This call comes less than a week after the violent protests in Ntshawini which means local protesters could be in hot water the next time they take to the streets. According to eyewitnesses, during the Ntshawini protest demonstrators were stoning cars,
burning tyres and blocking traffic on the R102. “Yesterday (9 May 2017), we had a meeting as the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster where we instructed the police to be proactive and act swiftly in curbing violent public protests and arrest those who are implicated,” said Kaunda. He added that KwaZulu-Natal will leave nothing to chance in ensuring that those who damage property during the public protests face the full might of the law. Kaunda also reminded protesters that South Africa was governed by laws and that anyone who engaged in criminal activities and damage private or public property will be dealt with harshly in terms of the
law. “We don't only want them to be arrested, but they must be litigated and be held liable for damage to property.” The MEC further said that working with the police, they have put plans in place to curb violent protests in the province, given the fact that the country was approaching a strike season. “We understand that people have a right to protest and voice their grievances peacefully. However, we will not allow these protests to trample on the rights of those who are not part of the protests. “The state has a duty to
defend its people and property, therefore we are not going to tolerate lawlessness in our communities,” said Kaunda. He also stated that police will continue
to maintain a strong presence in all areas affected by violent public protests in the province to protect law abiding citizens and property.

Mandeni Mayor, Councillor Sphesihle Zulu officially introduced the Hlomendlini Project Contractor to the community recently. Zulu said the main purpose of the community gathering was to give clarity to questions that relate to completion of the Hlomendlini sports field, the crèche and the community hall that was left incomplete due to ideological differences between the service provider and the Department of Human Settlements in 2010. “Today I am honoured to announce Lwandiswa Construction as the service provider that is responsible for the construction of the local crèche, Hlomendlini sports field and the community hall as well. It is also vital to mention the fact that as Mandeni council we are responding to the
community needs as they were raised in the IDP, an Integrated Development Plan,” he said. He also stated that the first phase of the project will deal with the completion of the community hall and crèche whereas the second phase will solely focus on the construction of the sports field. He further announced that the project will last for the duration of six months and stressed that it should be completed by 14 August. “The project steering committee consisting of ward 4 residents will be launched to facilitate the project.”

Vivian Reddy pledges damages claim to charity
V i v i a n R e d d y, Chairman of Edison Property which is spearheading the major new Mall development in Stanger, is coming out guns blazing in a R28 million damages claim against the group that frustrated the development of the project for almost a year. As an unequivocal demonstration of his bona fides in pursuing the claim, he has pledged that whatever damages he will be awarded by a court of law will be donated totally to local charities in Ilembe. Reddy said today, “For almost a year, a local group of 'Objectors' led by Haroon Mahomedy, have placed every obstructionist obstacle in the way of this much-needed development that will eventually turn out to be the life-blood of a town that has been in limbo for decades. This has resulted in escalated costs running into millions of rands apart from impact of time delays to the project and the severe commensurate cost of price increases on the development.
He remarked further, “That the selfish and self-centred actions of a few individuals have held the entire town hostage and has effectively delayed a facility that will change the lifestyle of people in Stanger. The consequence of their ill-considered and illadvised actions have 'delayed the employment of thousands of people in the region directly and indirectly during the construction period, has delayed the injection of millions of rands into the economy of the region in terms of purchases of materials and
goods that will be made in the region during construction, has delayed the earning potential and economic upliftment of hundreds of people during construction and after completion and has delayed the financial contribution to the Municipal's coffers by millions of rands per annum which could have been used in the seriously-needed improved service delivery'. Reddy reiterated that this claim for damages brings him no financial rewards or satisfaction, and has therefore embarked on an unprecedented
undertaking to distribute all damages awarded in a court of law to charities in the region. Some of the charities that are grappling with the r a v a g e s o f unemployment and poverty have greatly welcomed this undertaking. Further, in response to our advert last week inviting local construction, designer and supply Companies to participate in the mall project, we received over 80 requests for inclusion in the development. Reddy confirmed that he has a full list of the obstructionists and will access any further information required on the funders of these actions through the Access to Information Act. In the meantime, the project has moved full steam ahead trying to make up for lost time and hundreds of people have already indicated to Reddy personally that they greatly welcome the lifestylechanging Mall facility. The heavy rains over the weekend resulted in flooding, damages and vehicle accidents across the region. A man was killed after his vehicle collided with a truck on the N2 near Mandeni on Sunday, 14 May 2017. It is alleged that the driver lost control of the vehicle and veered into oncoming traffic. Another person was seriously injured in a separate incident in Shakas Rock on Saturday, 13 May 2017. According to Chris Botha of Netcare 911, reports from the scene indicate that the vehicle was traveling on the north bound lane, it veered off the road and overturned. “Paramedics arrived at the scene and found that the crumpled remains of the vehicle had come to rest on its wheels next to the southbound lane. One person was found to have sustained serious injuries. The patient was treated at the scene and then transported to hospital by another private service,” said Botha. He added that exact detail to the cause of the crash is still speculative and will form part of the police investigation. Two accidents occurred as a result of the rain around KwaDukuza yesterday (Tuesday, 16 May 2017). Two people sustained minor injuries in a crash on the N2 near Tinley Manor. There was also a collision on the R102, near the Groutville area. Paul Herbst of IPSS Medical Rescue confirmed that rain was the major factor behind the crashes.

North Coast congregations of Jehovah's Witnesses invite and welcome all interested persons to a one day assembly that will highlight how we can “increase our faith in Jehovah our God.” We understand from the Bible that without faith we cannot serve God. To have a fine hope for the future by serving God in an acceptable way we need to have
strong faith. This strong faith will help to support us and give us courage as we face difficult times in our lives. For instance, what if we lose a loved one in death? If we contract a serious illness? When we start getting old! With strong faith, we will be able to cope with these events if and when they occur. Enjoy a morning symposium of
word pictures that illustrate how God is a SHIELD, a FATHER, a ROCK and a SHEPHERD. The public discourse in the afternoon will discuss the subject “WHAT IS TRUE FAITH AND HOW IS IT SHOWN” The importance of having strong faith will be emphasised throughout the days' program and many aspects will be developed to show how we can increase our faith as we learn more about Jehovah and see his helping hand in our lives. The programme will be presented in English in the Empangeni Civic Centre Have you been seriously injured in a motor starting 9:30am Saturday May 20th, 2017, ending at vehicle accident or the victim of possible 4:20pm with a one hour medical negligence? break at lunch time. As is the custom, attendance is free and no collections are taken or asked for. Pedophile? A 58-year-old caretaker at a local school is facing four counts of sexual assault. It is alleged by his victims aged between 12 and 14 years old that he used various methods to lure them to his room on the school premises. Each victim realized his intensions were suspicious and avoided him. He however used devious methods to get them to his room where he c a r e s s e d t h e m inappropriately and threatened them thereafter. He contacted them after the incident to visit him again. The man was arrested after the children reported the incident. He will seek bail this week.

Bad attitude A youth and his friend who went to pick up a cellphone from a local repairer in the area ended up in a fight for their lives. The friend alleges that when they knocked on the door of the repairer's house, the youth attacked them with a cane-knife. He was allegedly struck on the head by the youth who fled and hid behind his mother at a local tavern. The owner chased the entire group off his premises. The youth then went to explain to the boy's mother what had transpired but she chased him away and they began throwing bottles at him. Both fled but the attacking group caught and injured the youngster and began assaulting him again. Residents intervened and rescued the injured youth. The 14-year-old and his mother, Phumzile Zikhali (35) are due in court again on 17 May.

Psych patients need not wait! During a visit last month to the KwaDukuza Clinic (KDC), the admin staff at the front cubicle where you get your card, or in my case the A5 mini black notebook, signed and stamped; informed me that because I collect chronic epilepsy medications like many other psychiatric patients, WE COME DIRECT TO THEM and not wait in the inside or outside queue. Applies to admin queues only. Its great to hear because a lot of patients with psychiatric and brain issues may not have the faculties for patience. Stress easily arises and triggers seizures and the like for epilepsy patients (Talking for myself). Please inquire at the front cubicle if you are unsure. Councillor Vernon Pillay

Regarding drug abuse, parents must encourage and ensure their children get involved in activities that will keep them busy rather than being idle and getting into mischief and indulging in drug or criminal activities. In addition to self-defence karate teaches self-awareness and self -confidence, discipline, respect, good behaviour, life values and good health which will assist individuals in achieving goals in all aspects of life. We encourage the youth and community members join us in training and reap the benefits of this amazing sport. This art also keeps you physically and mentally fit". It is indicative of Chelsea's season that the Blues converted their first match ball to use a tennis term to win their fifth Premier League title. Michy Batshuayi's late goal gave the Londoners a hard-fought 1-0 win against West Bromwich Albion on Friday night and a 10-point lead from Tottenham Hotspur, who can no longer overtake them as they have just three matches to play. With the final whistle at The Hawthorns were looking for the reasons Chelsea had managed to turn the horror of a 10th-place finish last year into a championshipwinning season. For some, it was Italian coach Antonio Conte, who took over at the start of the season, that made the difference. For others, it was the signings the shrewd Italian tactician made for the club, while others believed the squad rode to success on the back of a spirited team effort. Finally, there were those who said the Stamford Bridge club benefited from not having to play in Europe this season. The Blues started the season like a house on fire winning their three opening matches. However, when their next three brought two defeats (at home against Liverpool, away to Arsenal and a draw at Swansea) their fans were worried that the season could see a repeat performance from last year. However, after temporarily slipping down to eighth after the sixth match day, they continuously climbed the table and, by the 12th, they were first a position they would keep until the end. After a disappointing previous season, club boss Roman Abramovich turned to Conte and gave him the task of bringing the club back to their winning ways. Conte, who previously won three scudettos with Juventus before taking over Italy, spent more than €100 million (R1.4 billion) to strengthen the side; bringing in Batshuayi from Olympique Marseille, midfielder N'Golo Kanté from Leicester and defender Marcos Alonso from AC Florence. He also convinced centre back
David Luiz to return to Chelsea after a twoyear stint with Paris Saint-Germain. All four signings played their part in helping Chelsea achieve success, with Kanté being one of the unheralded stars in the side. The French international became the first player in the history of the Premier League to win back-to-back titles with different clubs. Batshuayi paid a tribute to the team: “This is the best day of my life. All the fans will be very happy now”. After the two early defeats against Liverpool and Arsenal, Conte made a bold step and changed his system to playing three at the back and it paid dividends. He said: “I think that changed our season. The defeats were heavy defeats and I saw that we needed to change something after that. It gave us stability in defence. “This achievement is an achievement for the players. They showed that they wanted to achieve something great this season and they showed determination. After this win, we must now be very happy; it is for the players”. In a side filled with stars, the one player who possibly stood out was Belgian international Eden Hazard, who is being touted as a player who could even give Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo a run for their money in the race for the Ballon d'Or. Hazard, who was the second top scorer for the side behind Diego Costa, said he felt the credit belonged to Conte: “We all know he is a fantastic manager. I think he was the key for the season. Full credit to him. “After the defeats early in the season, we started this incredible run and then we realised that we could win it this season”. The league might not be the only thing the club wins this season the Blues face Arsenal in the FA Cup final on May 27 and, if they grab that, they would become the first club to win the double since the 2009/10 season.

Sprint veteran urges youth to be athletic INSPIRATIONAL: Mr Yacoob Motala who urges young people to take up athletics at a young age as he still takes part at over 60.
Xpress Reporter Arguably the fastest man in South Africa during his heyday in the late 1960s and 1970s apartheid South Africa, Yacoob Motala was destined for Olympic gold but the situation in the country during that time did not allow. His dominance in the 100m and 200m races not only saw him excel in school athletic events but also at provincial level. These feats were achieved in not so favourable conditions of those days. Motala holds a South African schools record of clocking an impressive 10.4 seconds. Has represented Natal and North Coast region High Schools as captain on the track and field. During the 70s he was involved with the KZN seniors and later the veterans also participating in the world masters in Durban during the 1980s. Motala has continued to be active on the track and field as he has represented the masters from the 90s to this day and the biggest event he participated in was for the SA Masters in Brazil in 2014. At over 60 years old Mr Motala has took part in 8 SA championships in both

200 and 100metres. Some of the recent accolades he has achieved over the last five years is the KwaZulu Natal (KZN) Masters colours and has competed in the 100 and 200 Masters events as follows: South African Masters Track and field championships Cape Town(2010), Durban (2011), Pretoria (2012), Oudtshoorn (2013) and Rustenburg (2014) and is recognised in excellent achievement of 85% in over 100 metres and 80% in over 2000metres in the KZN Masters Athletic Association. At the age of 65 Motala is ranked third in the Masters Athletics from Africa rankings and is still going strong. He urged all potential young athletics to participate in training as he can avail himself to train them. “This sport is more like a Cinderella sport where there's high expectation but little reward,” said Motala. He draws his inspiration from his wife, Zohra a former teacher and a BA graduate who is his partner in life and who also officiates at athletics meetings and athletics events.

Ballito Pro Surf Festival Brings World's Best to KwaDukuza in June The World Surf League's top ranked performers will be joined by the cream of South Africa's men, women and junior surfers for a 14 day festival of high performance action in the waves of Willard Beach in Ballito on the KwaDukuza coast from June 27to 9 July this year. For the ninth successive year the region will host the world's best men in the Ballito Pro presented by Billabong, a WSL Qualifying Series (QS) 10,000 rated event with a prize-pool of R3.4 million and the highest available ranking points on offer. The women will showcase their talent in the QS1,000 Ballito Women's Pro pres. by Billabong while the Billabong Junior Series includes events for men and women aged 18-and-than ever under at Ballito for the second year. "KwaDukuza Municipality is pleased to come together yet again with our valued partners to host yet another spectacular internationally renowned sporting event, which continues to position our area as a leading events tourism destination,” says the Mayor of KwaDukuza, Cllr Ricardo Mthembu. “We look forward to the upcoming event as it enters its 9th year on KwaDukuza soil. “The Ballito Pro presented by Billabong is an important stop on the World Surf League tour and plays a critical role as a platform for local South Africans to develop within the sport. Needless to say, it is our fundamental aim to develop our people both economically and socially through events of this nature and we anticipate another successful year in 2017. We are calling on our community and business community to ensure that they provide our visitors with an experience they will remember. We wish all our participants a happy stay in our district and hope that they will enjoy a spectacular experience. We are also looking forward to renewing our partnership with the World Surfing League beyond 2017.” The 49th edition of the world's longest running professional surfing event will be bigger and better than ever in 2017 as it again welcomes the support of global apparel and equipment giant Billabong, who are celebrating the 20th annual running of their acclaimed Billabong Junior Series this year. “Billabong is honoured to continue our relationship with KwaDukuza,” says Chad D'Arcy, Group Marketing & Sales Manager for Billabong South Africa. “The Ballito Pro is the highlight of our competitive year and we look forward to once again presenting this amazing event in 2017.
“We are an authentic surf brand, with a proud legacy of hosting world class surfing events. We are excited to help nurture competitive surfing in South African and give our athletes the best platforms to compete on the world stage. Billabong would like to wish all of the competitors and spectators at this year's event amazing waves and great weather.” The 2016 field for the Ballito Pro pres. by Billabong included a dozen of the world's elite WSL Championship Tour (CT) surfers and was won by Connor O'Leary (AUS), who along with runnerup Joan Duru (FRA), Ezekiel Lau (HAW), Jeremy Flores (FRA) and Australians Ethan Ewing and Jack Freestone all went on to qualify for the prestigious 2017 CT thanks to the significant number of ranking points they earned in Ballito. The 112-man field for the event provides the local WSL Africa members with invaluable experience competing against the world's best, along with opportunities to earn prize-money and coveted rankings points which assist them in gaining entry to the higher rated events internationally and also count towards the annual WSL Africa title. Similarly, those in the Ballito Women's Pro pres. by Billabong earn prize-money and points on both the international and regional rankings while the competitors 18-and-under in the Billabong Junior Series will be striving for the prestigious event titles and selection for the WSL Africa squad that is invited to the annual WSL World Junior Championships. “It's been an honour and a pleasure for
WSL Africa to work alongside such a progressive thinking municipality as KwaDukuza for the past nine years,” said WSL Africa Operations Manager, Colin Fitch. “We're so grateful to the town of Ballito and its residents for welcoming the surfers into their homes and surf for 14 days of world class surfing.” “The Ballito Pro has become one of the most important events on the World Surf League Qualifying Series and most of the winners have gone on to qualify for the elite WSL Championship Tour the following year. Sincere thanks to KwaDukuza and Billabong for turning the dreams of so many South African surfers of all races into a reality.” The Ballito Pro Surf Festival kicks off with the Billabong Junior Series from June 27-29 followed by the Surfing South Africa Trials pres. by Billabong on June 30 and the Ballito Women's Pro pres. by Billabong on 1 and 2 July. The crown jewel of the festival, the QS10,000 Ballito Pro pres. by Billabong takes centre stage from Monday to Sunday, July 3-9. Alongside the surfing, visitors will be spoiled for choice with non-stop activities providing even more entertainment throughout the Ballito festival site. South Africa's hottest musical acts appealing to all tastes - rock, pop, hip hop, kwaito, electro and dance will be performing live on Salt Rock Beach over the last weekend. Beach and extreme sports, culinary contests as well as quality retail and food stalls will captivate visitors to this coastal holiday highlight.

Grove End dethrones Randsons as Xpress Easter champions
Reigning 2016 Xpress Times Easter knock-out champions, Randsons were dethroned by Grove End I in an enthralling final played amidst a huge crowd at the association courts last Tuesday. The tournament was hosted by the KwaDukuza Volleyball Association. The tournament, which was supposed to have been completed during Easter was postponed on numerous occasions due to inclement weather and logistical problems. In the play-off for the third and fought place, Darnall United stunned their more illustrious counter-parts Grove End II Beating them 2-1. Darnall narrowly lost the first set 22-25 bouncing back in the second set to thrash Grove End 25-17. The momentum continued for Darnall in final set as they dominated cruising to a 15-11 victory to secure a podium finish. For their efforts, Darnall pocketed R300. The final was a repeat of the 2016 final which Randsons stunned Grove End. Randsons were the dominant side in the opening set, neutralising the attack force of Vinnie Singh, Neil Perumal and Niven Baldeo. Randsons have been
bolstered with the return of playmaker and formidable Lennox Dayi and he combined well with on fire Treval Premlal, Sandhir 'Tin Boy' Jugmoham and Roland Chetty. The combination of defense at the net by Premal and Jugmoham proved crucial as they thwarted the formidable attacks of Singh, Baldeo and Perumal. Randsons won the first set 25-22. Grove End began the second set with more venon as Baldeo and Singh got their act together and bamboozled Randsons with sheer attack, leaving Randsons stunned. Grove End cruised to a comfortable 25-16 victory to level the scores and force the game into the decisive final set. Despite the gallant effort by Randsons to steal the show, the Grove End trio of Singh, Baldeo and Perumal proved to be a lethal force as they steered Grove End to a 15-11 victory. Grove End were rewarded with a floating trophy, outright trophy and a whopping R1000 whilst Randsons gained R600 and trophies. Tournament director, Aslam Randeree congratulated the teams and thanked the Managing Director of Xpress Times for his magnanimous gesture.
