ILembe hosts African Agriculture Conference Conference tackles obstacles faced by farmers By Thokozani Mnguni

Lembe District played host to the 3rd edition of the African Agriculture Conference on Thursday, 13 June 2019. The 3-day conference was held at Fairmont Zimbali. The sharpest minds in the continent gathered to share ideas on how they can utilize agriculture to empower rural communities while also enhancing productivity and adapting to the rapidly changing environment due to the eminent threat of climate change. Food security, Agricultural development, Technology and Climate change were the main talking points at the summit. ILembe District Municipality Mayor, Cllr Siduduzo Gumede stated that stakeholders and farmers must work tirelessly to ensure that rural farmers are well capacitated so that they may become successful commercial farmers in the future. “As ILembe we encourage the development of the knowledge economy in agriculture so that research and innovation can improve efficiency and constantly re-invent the status quo to ensure ILembe remains the first choice supplier of fresh produce. Agriculture plays a major role in the process of economic development and can contribute significantly to household food security. We need to come up with sustainable strategies that will assist vulnerable households, subsistence smallholder producers to produce their own food and use,” uttered Gumede.

African Dream who are the organisers of the event, unpacked several strategies that can be used to provide African solutions to African agricultural problems and give an opportunity to emerging farmers to expose their product. African Dream urged commercial farmers, emerging farmers, leaders to collaborate to ensure the food security through bi-lateral trade within the African continent. “African Dream promotes and inspires Africans into believing in the beauty of their dreams and putting in mind that it is very possible to make it in Africa and to be successful throughout the continent. Working together we can achieve the goal of seeing African agriculture rising,” said the

organisation. Siza Sibande of the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, said this 3rd edition of African Agriculture paves a path for integrated economic development in the agriculture industry in the continent of Africa. “We need to redefine Africa, agriculture is the core of our economy. Recent statistics show that there's a decline in the number of emerging farmers. This results in job losses. We need to work around the clock to curb this occurrence,” said Sibande.

KwaDukuza Municipality organised an Environment Day Open Street event aimed at raising awareness about the importance of conserving nature and encouraging the public to play their part in protecting the environment in the midst of the resurgent threat of Climate Change. This event was attended by Sector Departments, Conservation Entities, Local Businesses, KwaDukuza Schools, and NGOs/NPOs. This was part of the municipality's commitment in Low Emission Development with the aim of meeting the development needs of the municipality while

minimizing its contribution to climate change. KwaDukuza Municipality Mayor Cllr Dolly Govender joined the parade of learners, and went around the CBD urging residents to protect environment. “We are considered one of the fastest growing municipalities in the province which positively impacts the municipality's finances. At the same time, our poor urban population groups are highly vulnerable to climate change impacts such as rising sea- levels, floods and storms. The municipality must follow a new low emitting, much more efficient path of growth and sustainability and leave the high polluting unsustainable paradigm of the past. Hence, we are piloting

an Open Streets event in commemoration of World Environment Month,” said Cllr Govender. “Land use integration and settlement densification achieved in the municipality affects both transport and public sector energy emissions and is linked to the cost and financial sustainability of public infrastructure especially public transport systems. As I conclude, this is why we are gathered here today to embrace the concept of Open Streets so that all of us can create shared places that symbolise respect for all and assist in bridging the social and spatial divides of our city. With those few words, have a fruitful and educational day,” concluded the Mayor.

ANCYL Youth Day Celebration YOUTH DAY: The African National Congress Youth League in General Gizenga Mpanza Region joined masses of South Africans to commemorate the role played by the youth of 1976, who sacrificed their lives during the apartheid Government. On Sunday, the Youth League in ward 10 Branch held a youth day celebration and sports day at Groutville Market. The event was a huge success, with big names in the local entertainment industry present to cheer up the crowd.

Stanger Primary School held an inter-school Poetry Recital Contest convened by Mrs S. Brijlall (Departmental Head of Foundation Phase). 14 schools who enthusiastically responded to the invitation were hosted. The standard was set when Grade R took centre stage followed by Grade 1, 2 and 3. The winners are as follows: Grade R: Tynika Gopalan - Stanger Manor Primary. Grade 1: Adaliah Esther Lutchman - Stanger Manor Primary. Grade 2: Darius Alaano Puckree - KwaDukuza Primary. Grade 3: Ayabongwa Khumalo - Stanger Primary. Winners were awarded with trophies and certificates. All participants received certificates.

Cool Leaders/Heights in titanic battle Cool Leaders and Heights were in a titanic battle in the KwaDukuza Volleyball Association league fixtures played at the association courts last Thursday. Heights went out on a mission, despite the frantic of Cool Leaders winning the first set 25-20. The usual diesel engine start from Cool Leaders warmed up in the second set as they matched Heights at every point. The lead changed hands at various stages of the game until both teams were locked at 25-25. It was Cool Leaders that showed their never-die attitude that grasped the set and levelled the game at 1 set all, forcing the game into the crucial third set. The final set proved once again to be a titanic battle. Once again both Cool Leaders and heights dispatched their best volleyball till the teams were locked on 13-13. The game could have gone either way. Two silly mistakes from Cool Leaders saw Heights sneak victory 15-13. KSST (an all ladies team) where once again exposed to a baptism of fire when they faced title contenders Darnall United in their league fixture. Sam Moonsamy's charges showed no mercy as they clinically disposed of KSST 25-11, 2513. Credit needs to go to KSST for their proud display and

their determination of promoting ladies volleyball. There was no love lost in the Glenhills derby between Bethel CC and Glenhills United. In a hard fought game to determine the power in Glenhills, Bethel eked out a 25-23, 26-24 victory against Glenhills. Once again, title contenders and reigning champions Shakas Sporting conceded the first set to Manor Old Boys after being delayed to arrive at the courts on time. MOB claimed the first set 25-0. Thereafter, it was one way traffic as Shakas cruised to a 2516, 15-8 victory to claim another win and remain undefeated. However, conceding sets for late arrival may come back to haunt them at the end of the season. Azmeera Singh, Asande Buthelezi and Nosipho Cele did KwaDukuza schools proud when they were selected to represent KwaZulu Natal in volleyball in the forthcoming South African Schools Winter Games that will be held in Durban from 30 June to 7 July. Pearl Sithole has been selected as a stand bye with educators Samke Dlamini and Nonhle Dlungwane selected as assistance coaches for the KZN U17 and U15 teams respectively. iLembe, and more especially KwaDukuza need to take heed as to the level of volleyball in the district. Once a powerhouse in schools volleyball, teams representing iLembe lacked the

intensity starting from the selection of teams. Organisers/coaches had to go to individual schools to identify players for teams as they were not present at the selection trials. With games catering for only U15 and U17, eliminating primary schools, it was sad to see the secondary schools were represented by officials from the primary schools, being it managers or coaches or technical officials and the question should be asked: What is happening at our secondary schools? The next question should be: Are our established clubs in KwaDukuza and the officials doing enough to uplift

the game amongst our youth? Where are we taking the development of the sport to? It is now imperative for iLembe and KwaDukuza in particularly (as the organised body) to have an important conference as to where sport, and more especially volleyball, is heading towards in KwaDukuza and iLembe with regard to development. It is also imperative that the powers in the form the Department of Education and Sports and Recreation (iLembe), together with established associations get together for a common goal: development amongst the children under our care.

Yogan Pillay and Justin Naidoo seem to be peaking at the right time as they showed their opponents precision darts at the KwaDukuza Darts Association team doubles tournament held at the Quartz last Wednesday. This bodes well for the association as part of their preparations for the Darts South Africa National Tournament that takes place in Port Elizabeth from 24-28 June. Pillay and Naidoo defeated Dennis Govender and Darrel Shanmugam in the finals.

Commemorating International Yoga Day By Xpress Reporter PHENOMENAL: Award winning Yoga Instructor, Shamima Omarjee

In commemoration of International Yoga Day on 21 June 2019, the Xpress Times caught up with Award winning Yoga Instructor, Shamima Omarjee, to shed some light on the topic. Shamima is a facilitator and motivational speaker with 9 years of experience in teaching the art of rediscovering the self through yoga. “Yoga to me is about a beautiful journey to finding ones inner and outer self, as well as connecting with one's body to feel emotions and to be able to correct oneself. As humans we constantly stay in situations that hurt us because we cannot bear the thought of change. Yet, the one thing I am reminded of time and time again is that

there is one certainty in life that things are in constant moving process of change. If nothing is certain then our only choice is to start finding ways to accept the uncertainties of life. “Young and eager to heal myself of my own trauma and depression and raising two beautiful children as a single mum, as well as establishing a foundation for growth - I embraced my change,” she said. She added that Yoga helped her move through change with a sense of inner stability. “From heart openers to hip openers and ying practices to yang, the way the breath connected me to my body and anchored me into the present moment - the 'here and now' was magical. The sense of being in the present

moment allowed for profound change to take place in my energetic, emotional and physical bodies. Thus, my passion for yoga began.” Shamima enrolled at a yoga institution and absorbed her journey to selfdiscovery and methods of teaching. “My course asked of me not to run away but to remain present and surrender to what is. I qualified as a yoga teacher, wise and fearless.” “I learned a very important lesson of life - we will make mistakes. We will trip and fall and we will take wrong turns. However, I believe that all these failed experiences are strewn in our path for our own self-discovery and growth. As my journey continues I engage in multi-

faceted holistic approaches to healing viz: Organising Yoga Retreats inclusive of dietary programmes, body connections, nature walks, mindful activities and workshops in collaboration with experts in the disciplines of holistic healing, specialized rehabilitation yoga, private and personalized Yoga, ayurvedic awareness and consultancy, Group Yoga sessions at Moses Mabhida Virgin Active, Princes Grant golf Estate and Zimbali. “My intention for all my programs is to collaborate with the many holistic healing disciplines and experts to create awareness of health and wellness in this much needed fast paced, stressful environment,” she added.
