waDukuza S A P S members and Umhlali K9 responded to a business robbery in progress at Markham store in KwaDukuza on Sunday 16 July 2017. The incident happened at around 13h15. Three of six suspects were arrested inside the shop, two firearms were recovered with exhibits and a getaway vehicle, a Toyota verso with false plates was identified. According to KwaZulu-Natal SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane, a complainant who works as a cashier at the store was performing his duties when he was confronted by three suspects. “At gunpoint the suspects took an undisclosed amount of cash and cellphones before fleeing the scene on foot. No injuries reported. A case of business robbery was opened at KwaDukuza police station for

KwaDukuza Central Business district has been a great hunting ground for robbers lately with Ushaka Mall being targeted twice when robbers looted Telkom SA outlet and a Cell C store. Another incident occurred at Total Sports where the acting manager and staff members were held at gunpoint and forced into the stock room while robbers looted the shop. In relation to the success of the police with the Markham robbery, KwaDukuza SAPS acting station commander, colonel Ntshalintshali has commended the work done by police members and the contribution of business people in fighting against crime. Man shot during protest By Xpress Reporter

A 30-year-old man was shot and injured during a protest at the Nkobongo area on Wednesday, 12 July 2017 at around 4am. According to SAPS KZN Spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbhele, a group of 50 community members blockaded the road with tyres and rubble during the protest when the victim was shot. “A man was shot by the suspect in the stomach during the

protest. He was taken to hospital for medical attention,” said Mbhele. She added that a 34-yearold suspect was arrested and charged with attempted murder. “He will appear in court soon,” she said. The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda recently condemned the violent public protests that have occurred throughout the province.

On 10 May 2017, the MEC said that working with the police, they have put plans in place to curb violent protests in the province, given the fact that the country was approaching a strike season. “We understand that people have a right to protest and voice their grievances peacefully. However, we will not allow these protests to trample on the rights of those who are not part of the protests.”

Three sentenced for farm attack By Xpress Reporter

Three suspects were sentenced by Mthunzini High Court for a farm attack committed in the Nyoni area near Mandeni in June 2015. Sabelo Zulu (22) was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, twelve years for attempted murder and fifteen years for robbery; Nana Madikane (44) was given six years for robbery and Thandiwe Cele (54) received four years for robbery as well. According to SAPS KZN Spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbhele, a fourth suspect, Sandile Mjadu (30), was shot and killed at KwaMbonambi area by police when he allegedly shot at members who were looking for him for other crimes. Mbhele said that Madikane and Cele arranged the robbery at the farm. “On 2 June 2015 at 19:00, the

victims, Peter Johnson (56) and his brother were in their farm house at Nyoni area when they were approached by three men who were armed with firearms. They allegedly shot and killed Peter Johnson and his brother was wounded and taken to hospital for treatment. During the attack, one suspect, Sabelo Zulu, was shot and wounded, and was taken to hospital under police guard. The other two suspects took two rifles and a pistol before they fled the scene,” she said. A case of murder, attempted murder and robbery was opened at Nyoni police station for further investigation. “Ilembe Cluster Task Team led by Lt Colonel Colette Bruwer took over the docket and through intensive investigation, using their skills and experience, the two women were arrested and

linked to the robbery. It appeared that they organised the robbery by colluding with three men.” KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa welcomed the sentence handed down to the accused. “The case is not finalised as the other two suspects are still at large. We will not rest until all involved suspects are arrested and prosecuted. We cannot allow innocent people to be attacked and killed by these criminals. We will ensure that the farming community as well as farm dwellers are always protected as we are conducting regular patrols in their areas. Community members must stand up and give information about criminals who are in possession of illegal firearms that are commonly used in faction fights, farm attacks, taxi and stock theft related cases,” he said.

Mashinini was laid to rest on Saturday, 15 July 2017 and her funeral was declared a special provincial official funeral by President Jacob Zuma. Mashinini lived in Johannesburg; her family was forcibly displaced several times during her childhood. She started working at the age of 14 and soon became a union organiser at her garment factory. She became active with the African National Congress (ANC) in 1956. Mashinini served for 12 years on the executive board of the National Union of Clothing Workers (NUCW) and founded the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (SACCAWU) in 1975. She was arrested and detained without charges for six months in 198182. Mashinini played several important roles in the transition to ANC rule in the 1980s and 1990s. She served on the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission and went on to become a Commissioner for Restitution of Land Rights. Her autobiography, titled Strikes Have Followed Me All My Life, was published in 1989

LOTARE Fun Walk The Lower Tugela Retired Teachers' Association (LOTARE), as part of its 20th Anniversary celebrations, will be holding a fun run through the streets of Stanger Manor on Saturday, 5th August 2017 commencing at 15h00. Farming couple gets thumbs up By Xpress Reporter

Strawberry farming couple, Mxolisi and Yolisa Gumede received an honorary visit from Deputy Minister of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries, General Bheki Cele on Monday, 17 July 2017 at their farm, Umhlali Cappeny Estate. Speaking during a walkabout at the farm, Cele said that the farm has met the government standards of maintaining food security and nutrition, job creation and contributing towards the country's Gross Domestic Product. “This farm has everything that as government we are looking forward to. The answer that is expected from the Department of Agriculture is three legged. It is food security and nutrition, creation of jobs and contribution to the GDP that you find in this farm. But amazingly so, it's a farm that is run by young people at a family level, but also African which is something really new to find the

African young couple running such a farm. One is just overwhelmed to see such an operation. Government will have to work very closely with this farm.” The farm started production in 2013 on a 17hectares land and it offers direct selling of fresh and frozen strawberries to retailers and the public. Speaking of challenges of entering into a niche market, the couple said there are serious production challenges, but once the product is there it is easy to supply to retailers and the public. “A lot of research is needed before you can undertake something like this and you got to continuously keep learning, because the challenges are numerous, production challenges are very severe, but the upside is that when you have the product, you do not battle to sell it,” said Mxolisi Gumede. Govender made it clear that the first score was no fluke as he notched up yet another 121 score and from there on left Meersingh flatfooted.

Du Plessis hails 'new Kallis' Philander South Africa captain Faf du Plessis said Vernon Philander was on the way to becoming the "new Jacques Kallis" after his man-ofthe-match winning display in a crushing 340-run win over England in the second Test at Trent Bridge. Philander was in fine form with both bat and ball as South Africa won with more than a day to spare. He made valuable scores of 54 and 42 at number seven before taking three wickets for 24 in 10 overs as England, chasing a huge 474 for victory, collapsed to 133 all out in what was their heaviest Test defeat, in terms of runs, at Trent Bridge. Now retired South Africa great Kallis was an outstanding allrounder, scoring 45 Test hundreds and averaging more than 55. The lively paceman also took 292 wickets at 32.65, and held 200 catches as well. Philander, primarily a fastmedium bowler with a priceless ability to move the ball late, is some way off matching those figures -his highest score in 45 Tests is 74.
