If you were caught speeding using a handheld speed trap device, there are requirements which should be met for the fine to be legal. There is always a degree of uncertainty regarding speed traps and speed cameras in South Africa, including when you can be fined and where it is legal to trap drivers. The growing list of technologies used in South Africa to enforce speed limits further complicates matters. Here are answers to some of the common questions regarding the legality of speeding fines, with a

focus on hand-operated speed trap devices. The answers are courtesy of the AA's Legal Advice portal, which contains information regarding road use in South Africa. • The minimum allowable distance between two speed traps? Handheld speed trap requirements The prominent guidelines, provided by the AA, regarding handheld speed traps are: • A valid calibration certificate

and the operator's certificate must be available at all times. • A driver shall be afforded the opportunity to view the speed reading and the two certificates. • The speed measurement equipment (SME) must be mounted on a firm and stable surface. If it is mounted in or on a vehicle, the vehicle must be stabilised. The following is in terms of the prosecuting guidelines for speed measurement equipment and traffic light violation-monitoring equipment. Site Selection When selecting a site for a speed measurement exercise, the following must be adhered to: • Site selection must be done during daytime for day and nighttime operation. • There shall be no large, stationary, or metal objects within a radius of 50m in front of the radar SME. • There shall be no metal road signs or vertical flat surfaces within 15 degrees on either side of the aiming direction, within a distance of 200m of the antenna. • The equipment may only be used where there is a clear view IL/LEGAL: The fine line between a legal speeding ticket and one that within 45 degrees of the is legal is blurred by technicalities with regards to technology direction of aim over a calibration and legal loopholes

However, this is a guideline and does not have to be applied. “It is important to remember that once a prosecution for speeding is initiated, the charge will start from 1km/h over the posted speed limit,” said the AA. On the 17th of August 2016 11 of the ISKF Stanger Karate club students will be jetting off to participate in the 3rd ISKF Shotocup as part of the national team representing South Africa. The 3rd ISKF shotocup will be held in the beautiful city of Cape Town at the CTAICC, a world class venue. A total of 20 Countries will be

attending the event with Karateas demonstrating high standards in Kata and kumite. Kwafel cause major upset Kwafel Darts Club caused a major upset when they defeated log leaders Sundowner Darts Club in the Dolphin Plummer's League played on Wednesday night at the Quartz Sports bar and Centre in Stanger Manor. Sundowner Darts Club sent out an early warning to Kwafel winning the first frame 5-1. The team comprising of Darrel Shanmagum, Paddy Padayachee, Len Naidoo, Neeran Somnath, Terrence Pillay and Ashley Haripersadh made no mistake as they went into the second frame winning 4-2. This was a concern for Kwafel Darts Clubs. However, the Kwafel team of Vinesh Geanballey, Jerry Govender, Nine Pillay, Devan Gounden, Jerry Arunachellum and Preolin Muthusamy had to regroup and surprised their opponent with a 4-2 victory in the third frame. In the fourth

frame the Kwafel team made it clear that Sundowner Darts Club is no threat and went on a rampage to win 4-2 once more. The Kwafel captain, Vinesh Geanballey who was unstoppable notched up two 180's to strengthen his team's chances and upset the Sundowner players to another victory in the fifth frame winning 5-1 to lead the team.
