Tributes pour in for Paul David disenfranchised was at the Stanger Recreation ground watching a cricket match. I was drawn to his loud, chirpy voice applauding each stroke and delivery. A happy chappy indeed. I introduced myself and our friendship blossomed ever since. Dear friend and peacemaker Mr Paul David, you have run your race in an exemplary fashion. Rest in peace,” said Asmal. Adv Neethie Israel also paid tribute to the late Paul David, and touched on his role as an Anti-Apartheid activist. “As a lawyer he sought justice for his clients but as a political activist he fought for the liberation of all South Africans. The fall of the diabolical apartheid regime was due, at least in part, to the efforts of Paul David and others like him. For that we, the people of South Africa, owe him a debt of gratitude. The political climate in which Paul operated was characterised by State orchestrated intimidation of political activists; police harassment and brutality; detention without trial, and extrajudicial murders, to mention only some of the regime's

PASSED ON: The late Paul David

Tributes have poured in for anti-apartheid struggle veteran Paul David. The 79year-old died of natural causes at his home in KwaDukuza on Thursday. The activist was a member of the Natal Indian Congress, as well as the United Democratic Front. President Cyril Ramaphosa said this is a great loss to the nation. “The passing of Paul David as the last member of the Consulate Six is a great loss to our country and especially to the people of KwaZuluNatal alongside whom he exerted himself in the trenches of struggle,” said Ramaphosa in a statement. Lower Tugela Association of Retired Educators also passed their heartfelt

condolences to friends and family of Paul David. “It is with a heavy heart that members of LOTARE convey their deepest condolences on the passing away of Paul David, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many. May God grant the family the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” said LOTARE in a statement. Ismail Asmal, a close and genuine friend to Paul, said David will always be remembered for his dedication in bettering the lives of others. “My first encounter with Paul, this outstanding academic, human rights activist and champion of the o p p r e s s e d a n d

grotesque aspects. To make matters worse, the judiciary had no qualms about administering a multitude of manifestly unjust and illegitimate laws. After all, the pretext went, courts do not make laws, and they only apply them. For Paul and others of his calibre and tenacity to have succeeded in such circumstances is an indication that ultimately justice will prevail; that enemies will be defeated; and good will triumph over evil,” articulated Adv.

Neethie Isreal. "Pursuant to the victory over apartheid Paul neither sought nor hankered after any form of reward, material or otherwise, even though on countless occasions, he put his liberty and even his life at risk. Not for him the spoils of war. He did what he did out of a deep sense of love and loyalty for his country. He comes from the same stable of thoroughbreds as did Mandela, Luthuli, Tambo, Sisulu and Kathrada and others of that ilk. Sadly, Paul

must have in recent years felt deeply disappointed by what one sees in South Africa today: rampant corruption in both the public and private sectors; brazen looting of State resources; government failure to provide basic services; an unacceptable rate of unemployment; and a high level of criminality, to mention only some of the more lamentable features. But in the end justice will prevail. It is only a matter of time,” concluded Neethie Isreal.

Ward 16 water outages explained ILembe District Municipality has given clarity on water outages that were experienced by the residents of Ward 16 in KwaDukuza. According to ILembe District Municipality on Friday the 7th and on Saturday the 9th of August 2020 there was a power outage in KwaDukuza which resulted in downtime of pumps at the Balancing

reservoir and the Kearsney pump station. This downtime resulted in compromised water flow to Glenhills, Stanger Manor, Warrenton and High Ridge reservoirs which then caused reservoir levels to decrease. “Last Thursday, the 13th August 2020 there was a planned power outage which further decreased the levels. ILembe District

Municipality teams are busy with leak detection, repairs and unblocking strainers as well as manipulating valves to direct water to the affected areas while the pipe replacement project in Warrenton continues. The objectives of the project is to improve water service delivery within the project area through the replacement of old AC pipelines to address service interruptions, water losses and to increase customer satisfaction,” said ILembe District Bsc Physio (UWC) Municipality. “The project was P.R. 72000 0123811 started on 22 May 2020 Tel: 032 552 7181 Suite 2 Morgan Court and is expected to be Email: 2physio@telkomsa.net 33 Mahatma Gandhi Street, Stanger completed on the 18th • Delayed • Back pain of June 2021. KZN Premier condemns corrupt officials Members of the provincial legislature, departmental officials and supply chain managers will undergo lifestyle audits as a measure to fight corruption, Premier Sihle Zikalala announced, when he released a list of government contracts that had been awarded since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Speaking at the launch of the KZN Covid-19 Procurement Disclosure Report, Zikalala said no mercy would be shown to those who were corrupt. He said the state should lead from the front in exposing corruption. However, he cautioned that all the good work done by the government should not be demonised as a result of the actions of a few. He said the government had observed that “in the public space there are sustained efforts to portray the government as corrupt and irresponsible, but it is committed to clean governance”. “This is part of a long and bigger plan to characterise the government as wasteful. Some of these narratives are peddled without facts, and we hope that all the factual

information we are releasing today will clear the air,” he said. He added that claims of cadre deployment, which averred that the majority of contracts might have been affected by corrupt ANC officials, failed to acknowledge that the party was not in control of all municipalities. “Corruption is systemic and it can affect any government. There is this narrative in this society to suggest the ANC is corrupt. Let's deal with the corruption of politicians and officials and those who are corrupting public officials,” he said.

Zikalala said the Provincial Executive Committee had taken a decision “in the interests of transparency” to make public officials - from the premier and members of the executive council down to officials in supply chain management - undergo lifestyle audits. He said the State Security Agency would co-ordinate the process with the SA Revenue Service. “We expect in the next week or the following week we will give details in terms of time frames. Four suspects arrested for murder Four men have appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrates Court on murder charges. SAPS provincial spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, said the men were arrested following the deaths of two men. Mbele said the suspects, aged between 35 and 43, were arrested in connection with an incident that took place on

August 10. "Two males were seated in their vehicle at Lindelani sports ground when they were attacked by unknown people who opened fire on them,” she said. Mbele said the two men, aged 17 and 25, sustained gunshot wounds to the head. By the time emergency services arrived at the scene,

the men had succumbed to their injuries. They were certified dead. She said a docket with two counts of murder was opened at KwaDukuza police station for investigation," she said. Mbele said further investigations are still being conducted to determine the motive for the shooting. She added that more arrests were possible.

ACCIDENT: Three people were killed and one was injured in a car accident on the R74 on Sunday, 16 August 2020

Krsna asthmee was observed until midnight by devotees at the Shree Hanuman Temple in Stanger Manor. Hawan and bhajans were rendered. "Let a man lift himself by himself not lower himself if one wants to realise God. The most sinful of sinners is pardoned by the raft of knowledge provided they don't make the same mistake again. Wherever Krsna is enquired and teachings practiced there is prosperity, victory, glory and firm policy," said spiritual leader Madhun Sobram Sing.

From railway ticket collector to Indian cricket icon

An end of an era for 'Captain Cool' Dhoni

When MS Dhoni smashed the six that won the World Cup for India in 2011, it instantly became an iconic moment in cricket and established the man who started off as a ticket collector as one of the game's greats. Hard hitting, unruffled no matter

what the pressure, the record of 'Captain Cool' and India's most successful captain, will be virtually impossible to meet. Dhoni has now called time on his illustrious international career, which included successes in every format and two limited-overs World Cups as captain. The 39 year old played 90 Tests, 350 one-day Midnight Blue - 128GB internationals and 98 Twenty20s for India since his debut in 2004. Excellent condition Let's look at five of his most notable innings. Visakhapatnam, 2005 Call 083 6900 707 Dhoni put aside

scores of zero, 12, 7 and 3 to announce himself in his 5th ODI with a match-winning 148 against arch-rivals Pakistan. Coming in one-down in a team that included Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Virender Sehwag, Dhoni stole the limelight with his 123-ball blitz. The wicketkeeper-batsman smashed 15 fours and four sixes to guide India to 356 and a 58 run win. Rise of the Ranchi star: Jaipur, 2005 It is never easy to the crease after Tendulkar in an Indian stadium. But after the superstar fell for just 2 runs, a young Dhoni tore into the Sri Lankan attack with an unbeaten 183. The devastating knock helped India chase a target of 299 and made the cricket world take notice. It remains his highest-ever ODI score. History: Mumbai, 2011 With India chasing Sri Lanka's 275 on home soil in the ODI World Cup final,

Dhoni who had earned the nickname “Captain Cool” soaked in the pressure to hit an unbeaten 91. He whacked Nuwan Kulasekara for six, triggering wild celebrations in the cricket-mad India whose fans had waited 28 years for an ODI World Cup. The innings, and the final shot over the fence, cemented Dhoni's status as one of India's greatest ever cricketers. Marathon man: Chennai, 2013 Whilst best-known for his explosive batting in limited-overs formats, Dhoni stamped his authority in Tests too. In the first match of a four-Test home series, Dhoni hammered the Aussie attack led by Mitchell Starc for 224 at Chennai in an innings that lasted more than 6 hours. India won the test and went on to whitewash the visitors as Dhoni established himself as one of India's most successful captains. T20 Glory: Bangalore, 2017

Dhoni led India to victory in the inaugural T20 World Cup, beating Pakistan in the final at Johannesburg. While he never scored a 100, he made a difference with numerous key knocks. Amongst the most notable Dhoni T20 innings is the 56 against England in Bangalore in 2017, his highest T20 score. With wristy flicks and big hits down the ground, the skipper guided India to 202 and a comfortable win. Present Indian skipper, Virat Kohli told Mahendra Singh Dhoni “you will always be my captain” as he hailed the influence of the cricketing great. Kohli, who made his India debut under Dhoni's leadership in 2008, heaped praise on the talismanic captain. Dhoni holds the record for most international matches as captain and his 195 international stumpings is also the most by any wicketkeeper.

EPL transfer news After long last, the English Premier League brought down the curtains of its 2019/20 season. All eyes will now be on the movement of players in the transfer market as teams aim to strengthen their sides to compete against the powerhouses, Liverpool and Manchester City. Arsenal boss Arteta eyeing Sevilla's Carlos Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is interested in signing Sevilla defender Diego Carlos according to The Telegraph. Arteta wants the 27-year-old to add extra depth to his defence as he plans a major squad overhaul

in the summer transfer window. Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham have also been linked with Carlos, who helped Sevilla secure a fourth-place La Liga finish in 2019-20. Man Utd to adopt Fernandes approach with Sancho Manchester will take the same approach in their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund's Jadon Sancho as they did with Bruno Fernandes. Fernandes was signed for an initial fee of £47 million ($62m) from Sporting CP, with an extra £21m ($27m) set to be paid to the Portuguese club in add-ons. United are hoping to drive the

price down for Sancho in the same way, in order to manage their current budget effectively amid the coronavirus crisis. Everton to launch £15m bid for Bournemouth's King Everton are planning to launch a £15 million ($20m) bid for Bournemouth striker Josh King according to The Sun. The Cherries are prepared to offload the 28-year-old to raise extra funds following their relegation from the Premier League. King has also been strongly linked with Manchester United, but Everton look set to open the summer bidding for the Norwegian.

One injured in Glendale accident

GLENDALE: One person was severely injured in a truck accident on Monday near Glendale (Photo cred: IPSS Medical Rescue)

In the early hours of Monday morning, 10 August 2020, IPSS Medical Rescue's advanced life support paramedics and rescue division responded to a two vehicle collision near Glendale. According to IPSS Medical Rescue, upon arrival of paramedics they

found an adult male still trapped in his Hyundai H100 vehicle. “While under the care of advanced life support paramedics, IPSS rescuers extricated the man from the wreckage. It's believed that a truck carrying sand lost its trailer when the second vehicle

collided into the trailer. The single occupant sustained critical injuries and required advanced life support intervention before being transported to private hospital for further care,” said IPSS Medical Rescue

Zikalala issues warning to alcohol consumers KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala has warned that the government will not think twice to reimpose the alcohol ban if people behave recklessly and a second more deadly wave of Covid-19 sweeps the country. This comes after restrictions on the sale of alcohol were lifted by President Ramaphosa. Speaking during a media briefing on Monday, Sihle Zikalala said the province had experienced a decline in new infections, but urged citizens to remain vigilant. This transition to level 2 should not make us complacent to think that the risk posed by the virus is no more. This is a deadly virus, everyone must adhere to all requirements. As the province, we will still deal harshly with those who are violating the regulations,” said Zikalala. On Tuesday morning, liquor stores in most parts of KZN were packed with long queues after restrictions on alcohol sales were lifted. Since the announcement on Saturday 15 August 2020, there has been mixed emotions over Ramaphosa's decision to lift the ban on alcohol. Many citizens

welcomed the decision with warm hands, while the others criticized the president, stating that this decision won't end any differently than it did the last time. Health Minister Zweli Mkhize defended the lifting of the alcohol ban, saying it was evidence-based and would ease pressure on hospitals as South Africa hits the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Customers who had braved the cold on Tuesday (yesterday) morning spoke to the Xpress Times, saying lifting the ban on alcohol will save a lot of jobs. “As we all know that brewers had complained that the ban on the sale of alcohol is driving their business down the drain, lifting

restrictions on alcohol is good for our economy,” said Nokuzola Khumalo. Sipho Ngema said that South Africans don't have a healthy relationship with alcohol. “If it were up to me, alcohol ban would remain closed till corona is eradicated from the face of society. Now we will see a number of Covid-19 cases skyrocket because of this,” articulated Ngema. Many alcohol consumers said they had stocked up before the ban but it ended so quickly. Law Enforcement and Health officials warned consumers not to rush to liquor shops and should adhere to Level 2 lockdown regulations

Former Darnall resident now an awardwinning oil producer Venishree Mayer is the first Indian South African woman to produce extra virgin olive oil. From humble beginnings in the small sugar cane village of Darnall in the Ilembe District, Mayer is now a multi-award-winning oil producer and the owner of Fraaigelegen Farm in the Cape Winelands. Her brand, Adhara Evoo premium extra virgin olive oil, was launched in 2018 and has won an award from the South Africa Olive Association. She said winning the award felt like a stamp of approval. “Being the first Indian woman in South Africa to be actively involved in the industry is groundbreaking,” said Mayer. She said she was acutely aware of the high rate of heart-related diseases, diabetes and arthritis within the Indian community. Olive oil, which she referred to as liquid gold, must become a staple in Indian kitchens because of its health benefits, she said. “These include it being a rich source of antioxidants; it reduces the risk of heart disease and it is good for both skin and hair.” The 51-year-old said olive oil was a great help to her mother, 83, who has Parkinson's disease, arthritis and diabetes. She said that education was a priority for her parents. In 1986, she matriculated from Stanger Secondary School and went on to enrol for an

honours degree in law at Natal University. She graduated in 1991. After graduating, Mayer was offered an opportunity to join Mercedes-Benz South Africa's (MBSA) graduate programme. She moved into the automotive industry and worked in sales and marketing at its head office in Pretoria. “I realised that marketing and sales were my forte. I was determined to develop my career further and head to the corporate headquarters in Germany.” During the graduate programme, she met her husband, Juergen, who was also completing his internship at MBSA. She said Juergen was the grandson of the first winemaker in the German Rhineland-Palatinate region where he grew up. After his internship, he studied international business in Berlin and Cambridge and Mayer moved to the UK city to join him a few months later. They got married and have a daughter, Sudarsha. On July 31, Adhara Evoo won best design in Africa at the Olio Nuovo 2020 Southern Hemisphere Competition in Paris and Abu Dhabi. Adhara Evoo was entered for the 2020 SA Olive Competition, the results of which will be announced at the end of the month. -IOL

Dlamini Zuma urges citizens to be cautious

Visiting of family and friends as well as hosting social events at residences will be allowed under level 2 as long as hygiene and health protocols were followed. Speaking at a media briefing on Monday, Cogta Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma said social events at places of residence were now permitted. "This visits to friends and families so long as there are not more than 10 visitors at a time and protocols of wearing a mask, sanitisation, washing of hands and safe social distance are observed," Dlamini Zuma said. The minister cautioned those who might want to visit the elderly who live with comorbidities not knowing they were positive and could infect the older people. "We know the older people are at risk. Their mortality rate is high. It is important when you visit you stick to the protocols. "You still wear your mask, sanitise and keep your distance so that the visit does not lead to grief. It is very important," Dlamini Zuma said. She added that social gatherings such as weddings and funerals were permitted as long as there are not more than 50 people gathered and health protocols are observed. However, night vigils are not permitted. "It is our hope that in undertaking these activities that we will maintain the strict protocols of social

distancing, wearing of masks, sanitisation and washing of hands. "We must exercise more caution and be more vigilant than before. It is our actions that will determine our future," Dlamini Zuma said. Dlamini Zuma also said further opening the economy did not mean the risks were lower. "All it means is that we try to balance livelihoods opening the economy but the risk of the virus is still there and the virus does not move. People move with the virus," she said. "The more people move around, the more chances the virus is taken from one person to the other. That is why it is important that we must ensure we keep to health protocols, (and) wear masks. "If we don't we will see a next wave of infections or maybe even a bigger surge which we would like South Africa to avoid." -IOL
