OFFICIALS: Officials present during the handover in Doringkop
By Xpress Reporter
K
waDukuza Municipality remains committed to working with young people to promote social cohesion and contribute towards nation building, as the Municipality has made socio economic development its major priority. On 14 September 2018, the municipality handed over furniture and upholstery manufacturing equipment to six youth led Cooperatives based in Doringkop to assist them to break the bondages of poverty. This programme will help enhance the capacity of local entrepreneurs to effectively participate in the mainstream economy. The six co-ops had been trained by My Space which is a skills development organisation working with various
Municipalities. Beneficiaries will also be linked with Ithala, SEDA and other organisations to enable them to understand the working environment. Speaking at the handover, KwaDukuza Municipality Deputy Mayor, Cllr Dolly Govender alluded that it's imperative for the youth to make use of all the resources at their disposal to eradicate social-ills facing various communities in South Africa. “I congratulate all the beneficiaries, it's heart-warming to see young people doing something to better their lives. I also emphasize that in co-ops, unity is very important and don't let other people derail you from your mission. As municipality we will work close with the beneficiaries to help them achieve or reach their destiny,” said Govender. Speaking on behalf of My Space,
Busi Mkhize who had been training and developing skills of the beneficiaries, stated that working in unity is the key in order to get the market faster. “This is the beginning of a long journey and as My Space we are grateful to the KwaDukuza Municipality for granting us an opportunity to sharpen the skills of the youth of this area. The furniture industry is scarcely explored by the youth, I urge you all to seize this opportunity,” said Mkhize. Each of the six co-ops received 24 items of furniture a n d u p h o l s t e r y manufacturing equipment comprising of Industrial Sewing Machine, Compressor, Stable Gun, Nail Gun, etc.

Food for Life
ANC Regional Secretary found guilty of murder By Xpress Reporter
Food for Life KwaDukuza is a non-profit organisation and is affiliated to Food for Life South Africa. We currently distribute over 4000 plates of free meals every week to the needy in KwaDukuza. Our last project is on the 29th of September 2018 (Day of light over darkness), which we would be preparing and distributing a total of 27 000 plates (108 pots) of meals. We are humbly requesting donations and sponsorship in either cash or kind. Our target is once again the preparation of 27 000 plates (108 pots of meals). It would be greatly appreciated if you together with your employees, family and friends assist in either sponsoring, preparing or distributing meals on the above mentioned date. All correspondence should be sent to info@fflkwadukuza.co.za or contact us on 032 552 4232. Food for life t-shirts, caps & aprons will be on sale on the day of cooking.
ANC Regional Secretary, Musa Zondi
The African National Congress (ANC) Regional Secretary, Musa Zondi of General Gizenga Mpanza Region (KwaDukuza), has been found guilty of murder and kidnapping. The ANC in KwaZulu Natal said that they learnt with great shock, of the guilty verdict passed by the Pietermaritzburg High Court against Zondi. “The ANC understands that this is in relation to a murder and kidnapping case perpetrated in 2015, following a break-in at the family business. While the ANC is still establishing the details of the case, the party, as a revolutionary organisation, would like to state categorically that it respects the rule of law and will always abide by the decisions of the courts. “While having one of its members arrested for such a serious transgression is disappointing and regrettable, the ANC however, believes in equality and justice. This requires that justice be meted out
without fear or favour. This development is a clarion call for the ANC to exercise more firmness in the discipline and conduct of its members”; said ANC KZN Provincial Secretary Cde Mdumuseni Ntuli. “It is the view of the ANC leadership in the province, regions and branches that freedom is threatened each time any member of society is murdered and justice must be served, irrespective of one's position or standing in society. Once again the ANC appeals to all its members, no matter how angry or provoked either by incidents of crime or otherwise, to resist taking the law into their own hands. Cde Zondi will from henceforth take leave of absence from all organisational activities in the ANC to allow him and his family the space to deal with this personal and painful matter.” Zondi is also the former secretary of t h e A N C Yo u t h L e a g u e i n KwaDukuza.

The KwaDukuza Municipality with the assistance of Ilembe District Municipality and KwaDukuza SAPS, held a Special Operation in the KwaDukuza Central Business District on 14 September 2018. The operation targeted among others the following; crime and grime, drug dealings, illegal immigrants, sale of illegal goods/ prescription medication, illegal street trading, scrap yards and second hand good dealers, illegal advertising, illegal businesses/ business licenses, illegal building works, land use contraventions and general bylaw contraventions The multi-agency operation targeted the CBD due to the spiralling levels of crime and general lawlessness in the business area. His Worship the Mayor of KwaDukuza Municipality, Dr N.R.
Mthembu, had given a directive that there must be ongoing and concerted operations dealing with all infringements within the business district as crime is affecting business as a whole. The operation was very successful with all law enforcement officials working closely together to tackle the various transgressions. There were a number of businesses and informal traders that were inspected for compliance. A total of 413 products were confiscated for noncompliance of the Foodstuffs, C o s m e t i c s a n d Disinfectants Act 54 of 1972. The items are prohibited in South Africa after being proven to contain harmful substances such as Mercury and Hydroquinone. These include Carotone, Caro Light, Diproson, Extra Clair, Epiderm
Crème, Betasol, Movate, Perfect White, Bio-Claire and Lamonvate. These items were being freely sold within stores and by the informal traders in KwaDukuza. The Law Enforcement Team visited and issued 6 businesses with notices, that are trading without a licenses as required in the Business License Act. Eight second-hand goods dealers were inspected for compliance with the SecondHand Goods Act 6 OF 2009, and these included the businesses that are buying and trading scrap metal and gold. One person was arrested for non-compliance with this Act. One business was issued with a notice for operating a scrapyard on Council property and illegal building works. All of these businesses were warned about buying stolen material and to ensure strict
compliance with the Act. Furthermore, a Foreign National was arrested for being in possession and trading in Drugs. He was in possession of approximately 22 pieces of rock and 1x half-moon of rock cocaine. He was arrested in a building in King Shaka Street. The land owner will also be served a notice for the condition and illegal building works that have been done to the building. This building is known for harbouring illegal foreign nationals and is associated with the drug trade. The state of the building is also in conflict with safety requirements. These matters will be raised with the land owner. The operation was a success and contributed to achieving the objective of cleaning up the Central Business District as set by the Mayor.

Life Changers Awards rocks KwaDukuza By Xpress Reporter
The 4th Annual Life Changers Awards took place on Friday, 14 September 2018 at the NCF Church, KwaDukuza. These awards are aimed at honouring men and women who work tirelessly to serve their communities, musicians, civil society leaders as well as youth in business. This year, the organizers of the awards, Dlaba Production, honoured two KwaDukuza apartheid stalwarts in General Justice Gizenga and Chief Albert Luthuli. The former was an ANC and Umkhonto Wesizwe member who served in countries such as Tanzania and Zambia to mention a few. Chief Albert Luthuli, a man who contributed to the emancipation of black people during the dark
times of apartheid was also remembered. Event organizer and founder, Mr. Phathabakhe Shezi lauded all the winners on the night and cited that their dedication to uplifting their communities will never go unnoticed. “We are saying to the people, continue to help where you can. This is our own way of showing you that we notice you and we appreciate all that you are doing. Most of these people are not asked to do what they do, they do it from the goodness of their hearts,” said Shezi. He added that it is important to recognise people who do well in the community so that the chain of helping one another will remain unbroken. Among the categories that were on the cards were;
Community Development Award, Youth in Business, Enthusiasm Award as well as music awards such as Best Accapella Group, Best Male Artist, Best Maskandi Artist and Best AmaZion Group to mention a few. “Overall it was a good day, I would like to thank all our sponsors, without them we could not have been able to put out such a good event” said Shezi. The event was graced by the DA leader in the province Zwakele Mncwango who delivered a keynote speech, urging the attendees to elevate those who are less fortunate. “Success is not only measured by what we accomplish as human beings but by our actions towards making a significant

change in the society. I highly appreciate the work done by Shezi to recognise people who excel in what they do but also never forget where they come from,” expressed Mncwango. Some of the winners on the night include, Maskandi Artists Khuzani Mpungose who took home the Best Male Artist Award, Khangelani Mhlongo Best Maskandi Artist, Youth in Business Nomfundo Mhlong and Nhlakanipho Ngidi. The event was also attended by musicians including Mthokozisi (Idols SA runner up), Dr. Buselaphi and Miss Planet Teen, Yolanda Mthiyane AWARDS: Seen is Yolanda Mthiyane presenting an award for Best Male Artist to Khuzani 'Indlamlenze' Mpungose at the Life Changers Awards

Stanger crime crisis: DA requests meeting with Police Minister
criminals. Dean Macpherson DA Ilembe Constituency Chairperson
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has requested an urgent meeting with the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele as well as the Minister of Justice, Michael Masutha, to devise an intervention that will restore order and bring peace to the streets of Stanger. Answers to the DA's parliamentary questions revealed that between the Stanger Police and the Courts, there has been a mere 1.4% conviction rate for murder, rape, robbery, hijacking and housebreaking. When one looks at each category specifically the figures are more alarming, including a conviction rate for murder of 2.7%, rape of 6% and hijacking of 0%. On 19 June 2018, the DA undertook an oversight inspection to the Stanger police station during which senior management literally ran away to avoid accounting to MPs. It is now clear that there is a crisis in Stanger that requires urgent national intervention to restore law and order in this community. The people of Stanger live in constant fear that they will be victims of violent crimes without a police service to assist them and a justice system that will prevent criminals from roaming the streets. A DA government will ensure that law and order is maintained in our communities and that there are effective arrests, prosecutions and convictions of
The KwaDukuza Mall employment issue
XPress
The hot potato, gossip taking a back seat and the household daily talk reverberates around the opening of the mall and the employment of KwaDukuza citizens mostly… if only. When KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) councillors visited the site, I think a month ago; the developer Vivian Reddy addressed all in what would be Checkers soon. The Honourable Mayor, Cllr Ricardo Mthembu raised the issue of employing our people from all 29 wards. Further to this would be the Cllrs (myself included) who make up the Youth, Sports and Gender (YSG) Portfolio Committee wanting the majority of our KwaDukuza youth being employed here. And to refine this even further I personally would love to see gender parity being priority when the plethora of stores are employing youth. This will peg back moral degeneration and give due credence in gaining moral redress among our youth especially. I hope to come across a detailed employment report that records every aspect especially where the employee resides, gender and age. Cllr Vernon Pillay Ward 19

The shocking stats on murder tipping at 57 daily in our country is a great concern for all of us. In KwaDukuza since 2016 it was recorded at 52 now up to 74 in 2018. It is clear we are losing the battle with criminals. The formation of various structures including neighbourhood watch must be commended in KwaDukuza or else the situation could be worse. Here we have men and women patrolling the streets to keep their family and community safe. Their efforts in combatting crime must get recognition through the mayors awards ceremony. The sacrifices and untold hours of voluntary work in assisting the SAPS and Crime Prevention Unit is an investment for the overall good of society. Assault with intent to inflict grievous body harm has also gone up to 524 from 472 in 2016. It is clear sign of desperation to harm at any cost. The aggression and vicious attack on our residents and businesses is an attack on the government's weak systems

under resourced, lack of visible policing and management. House burglary in KwaDukuza has dropped to 832 from 999 in 2016. This can be attributed to neighbourhood watch formations. However theft of motor vehicle/motorcycles has gone up to 105 from 81 in 2016. Drug related crime is on the rise from 1342 in 2016 to 1413 in 2018. These are some of the highlights of crime situation in KwaDukuza. The government must act fast and act now. We cannot allow a lawless state. Enough is enough. Cllr MS Sing DA Caucus Leader

THANKS ALOT MAMA ALISHA I am Salashnee from Shakaville Stanger. I’m here to thank Mama Alisha for helping me sell my property at a reasonable price. I was a proud Mother of 3 kids and was happily married. But my life turned upside down in 2014 when I lost all my 3 kids and their father in a road accident. I survived because I was at work that day. Since then I have panic attacks, My families memories were killing me and I decided to sell the house in 2015. Many people used to call come see the house but they don’t come back up to when I went to MAMA ALISHA after reading about her in the newspaper. She came to the house , blessed it and told me she will do the rest at her place of work. I was surprised when just in two weeks a buyer was found and I was given a reasonable amount of money. KDAC veterans bring honour KwaDukuza Athletic Club's stalwarts, Jaibalan Soobramoney and Nikeyi Maarbeel brought back honours when they participated in the KwaZulu Natal Golden games which took place at Richards Bay last Wednesday. They represented the Stanger and District Association for the
commitment and dedication at their ripe old age, sending a clear message to the youngsters of this town. Incidentally, Maarbeel celebrates his 80th birthday tomorrow, 20 September, has been an inspiration to the youngsters in KDAC. Called by the nickname 'the Iron Man'
and 'Jawaan' (youngster), this athlete has a famous saying that 'age is just a number'. To prove his point, Maarbeel will be participating in the Gaterite 10km Challenge this weekend. Youngsters, take up the advice from this veteran and take exercising seriously.

Manor to host annual Shivendra Velan memorial tourney
The late Shivendra Velan
Stanger Manor Primary School will host the annual Shivendra Velan memorial six-a-side cricket tournament commencing tomorrow, Thursday September 20 and culminating in the final on Wednesday, September 25. Principal of Stanger Manor Primary School, Isaac Abraham said that the late Shivendra Velan was a learner at the school before passing away after a short illness in 2008. His parents, Ravi and Rohini have decided to sponsor a cricket tournament each year to perpetuate his memory. This year marks 10 years since the untimely death of their only son, who would have turned 21 years in September. Eight schools comprising of Stanger Heights Primary, Glenhills, Beaches Primary, Ashram, Dawnview, KwaDukuza Primary
and Harry Bodasingh Primary will be contesting the 2018 showpiece. The duration of each match will be five overs per side. Matches will be played on a knockout basis with winners in the opening round advancing to the semis scheduled for Thursday at Manor Primary School and Dawnview respectively. In the event of inclement weather on Thursday the matches will take place on Friday. The losing semi-finalists will contest the playoffs for third spot with the winner advancing to the final on Wednesday. Trophies will be awarded to the winners and runners up with medals offered to the 3rd and 4th teams. Special awards will be presented to the best bowler, fielder and batsman of the tournament. Lunch sponsored by the Velan will be given to all participants immediately after the final. Abraham expressed his sincere thanks to the Velan family for their generous sponsorship and appealed to all teams to uphold fair play and camaraderie throughout the tournament.

Girls cricket up and running
iLembe cricket team that participated at the KZN Cricket Festival
Hats off to the officials of iLembe District Cricket Union as their investment in developing cricket among the fairer sex has reaped the benefits when iLembe Primary Schools fielded a Girls U13 team at the KwaZulu Natal Cricket Festival that took place at Hillary and Queensborough this past Saturday. The team gave an excellent account and who knows, there maybe there is a Marizanne
Kapp (who took her 100th wicket at the weekend) in the making. Nikita Naidoo was the star with bat and ball in opening match against Umgababa in their opening fixture which iLembe won by 8 wickets. Naidoo top scored with 22 (not out) runs and then backed it up with 5 wickets for a miserly 2 runs from just 3 overs. However, in their second encounter against the more
established and formidable Durban South, iLembe lost by 50 runs. H o w e v e r, G i o v a n n a Palacio put up her hands for selection with 4 wickets for 30 in 4 overs with Rakhi Bodasing scoring 24 with bat. iLembe officials are crossing their fingers and a w a i t i n g t h e announcement of the final KZN squad that will participate in the South African Cricket Festival. The President of iLembe Cricket is grateful to the girls' cricket coordinator Mr Swart and his coaching and management staff who prepared the girls for this event. iLembe Primary Schools finally has girls cricket up and running and hope that this sub directorate of iLembe Primary Schools grows stronger in the years to come.
