The latest actions by Ntshawini locals have seen an escalation as to the extremes residents of rural KwaDukuza can go. Nkobongo residents' jobs protest By Xpress Reporter

The residents of the Nkobongo, mostly youth, took to a peaceful protest which was undertaken at the Weldon Industrial node, on Wednesday, 11 May 2016. According to Ali Ngidi, the community leader, the purpose of the march was to create awareness among industry that the large youth populace within Nkobongo needed training and were unemployed. “We request that all vacancies available at any of the businesses must be made available to the community first. Relevant structures must be notified and

informed. Stats of the number of people working at each of these businesses must be provided. This should include their job designation,” said Ngidi. A collective memorandum that included the demands of Nkobongo (Ward 8), Shayamoya (Ward 23), Shakaskraal (Ward 28), according to Ngidi, was handed over to a spokesperson. The spokesperson represented seven industrial companies in accepting the memorandum. Besides jobs the approximately 500 strong peaceful protesters, asked

for: • Skills development businesses set up bursaries and scholarships to assist students; • SMME's - small businesses from respective communities be assisted and allowed to render services to their community. This includes all businesses that have resources to assist the seven businesses in any way; • Sports and recreation Nkobongo sports field can be made into community stadium and combo courts as a way to give back; • Welden trust fund Collectively businesses must form a trust fund and

contribute collectively to assist the community in any needs; • Land that a portion of land be donated to the community to allow community members to farm sustainably to support their families. • CSI - Corporate social investment schemes that protect the vulnerable of our community (Woman and children) and an early childhood centre be established for the education of young children. Theft of water meter, responsibility of cost By Xpress Reporter

The recent spate of theft with regards to the Ilembe smart water meters across Kwa Dukuza especially, has left ratepayers with a quandary in terms of the cost of replacement and who fits the bill. According to Ilembe Communications Director, Zee Nqala, the matter is usually investigated and there are processes that need to be adhered to. “For example obtaining case number or written affidavits that will assist in the municipality being able to claim from insurance. Municipality then fits the meter at its cost,” she said. She added that should there be more findings, the consumers will be contacted and their account will be debited in accordance.

Rapist sentenced to 25 years imprisonment By Xpress Reporter

41-year-old Thulani Nzama appeared in the KwaDukuza Regional Court on 12 May 2016 and was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for raping a 24-year-old woman. According to KZN SAPS liaison officer, Major Thulani Zwane, on 3 May 2014 at

about 13:00, the victim was on her way home when she was approached by the accused who offered her a job. “Whilst they were walking the accused attacked the victim, dragged her to the bushes and raped her. He took her cellphone and fled the

scene. “She screamed for help and community members came to her rescue. They searched for the accused until he was apprehended,” said Zwane. He added that local police were called and the suspect was handed over to them and was arrested for rape and

robbery. “The docket was transferred to KwaDukuza Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit for further investigation. He made various court appearances until he was sentenced.” The Provincial

Commissioner of KwaZuluNatal, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni praised the KwaDukuza FCS on their dedication in solving the cases and sending the rapist to prison. “We welcome the sentence and we hope that it will send a strong message to other would be rapists who target our vulnerable women and children,” she said.

Deceased relatives sought by SAPS

KwaDukuza police are looking for the family or relatives of a man who was found dead on the N2 freeway near the Zinkwazi turn off in KwaDukuza on 30 April 2015 at about 04:00. According to KZN SAPS liaison officer, Major Shooz Magudulela, the deceased was found naked and had a gunshot wound on his chest. He is between 30 and 40 years of age. A black jacket was found next to him. Frendz crowned KZN Car Paints winners

Frendz Volleyball Club were crowned the 2016 KZN Auto Car Paints champions after defeating Cool Leaders 2-1 in an intense final played in front of a huge crowd last Wednesday. Frendz opened up the game by comfortably winning the first set. Cool Leaders quickly won the second set to force the game into the crucial final set. The match was closely contested but Frendz held on for victory. Teachers claimed third spot after TV and Gates Boyz failed to make an appearance.
