An interview with KwaDukuza Municipality Mayor, Councillor Ricardo Mthembu was aired on Ukhozi FM on 15 March 2018. The Mayor tackled various issues including infrastructure handovers and service delivery. Mthembu said that the electricity network is back to its normal state. “We have ensured that all infrastructure that was beyond repairs has been replaced, this includes transformers in the main,” he said. Speaking on Human Rights Day, Mthembu expressed that the 2018 National Human Rights Day coincides with the centenary of former President Nelson Rholihlahla Mandela and Ms Albertina Sisulu. “To celebrate their Centenary is important and fitting tribute to mark their selfless and fervent effort towards bloodless transition and their promotion of human rights; the Human Rights Day in South Africa is associated with the 21st of March 1960, on that day peaceful marchers were mercilessly massacred by the apartheid regime. Those who are on our social media, would have seen that on a daily basis we post rights within the Bill of Rights. Our strategic objectives for the Human Rights Month are: To use the Human Rights month as a vehicle to foster social cohesion, socio-economic development, end to racism, xenophobia and homophobia; to highlight the progress made in advancing human rights and restoring human dignity; to create awareness through educational programmes, dialogues and public engagements on the importance of Human Rights. Mthembu said that his office conferred critical infrastructure projects that were part of the several wards priorities in the IDP for the 2017/2018 financial year. “That is the Shayamoya Community Hall (in Ward 13), Bird Park Bridge Replacement (in Ward 19) and Nonoti Mouth Crèche (in Ward 03). In total these projects cost R12 783 227,77. The completion of these projects is a true symbol that the peoples' prayers to Council are responded to. I urge you to take care of these facilities and guard against those who seek to harm them as a community. I am enthusiastic at the completion of

the Bird Park Bridge, many lives had been lost in this area during flooding. When I was bestowed the position of Mayor it was amongst many projects that I made it my duty to see through, to provide relief to the community of KwaDukuza, in particular Stanger Heights.” The Mayor also touched on the Masakhane Campaign. “We seek to mobilise communities to participate and contribute in municipal revenue generation initiatives to ensure sustainable development. We are using this campaign as a vehicle to instil a culture of paying for basic services by the community, so that we are able to continue providing service delivery. This revenue enhancement strategy places peoples' participation plainly at the centre of development. Mthembu also addressed financial issues. “In the beginning of this current financial year, EXCO resolved to engage the independent services of KZN COGTA to conduct a high level assessment on the state of finances of our municipality and the report was generated within three (3) months. The report, generally, pointed at among other things that INVITATION KwaDukuza RAM NAUMI CELEBRATION Municipality Date: has over the Sunday, 25 March 2018 years been Venue: h a v i n g Shree Hanuman Temple overtime and 19 Rose Road, Stanger Manor refuse removal Time: 6.00pm costs rise Prasad and meals will be served steeply. wards requiring services. Noting the severity of the situation from a cost analysis point of view. EXCO made recommendations to Council to immediately ensure that it refines the organisational overtime measures in line with employeremployee collective agreements as well as to develop a refined refuse collection strategy. Given the escalating and unsustainable costs of overtime and failure to comply with the provisions of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act in relation to overtime, it has become necessary that measures be put in place and such measures to look at the generic causal factors for overtime as well as clear procedures to be followed in mitigating overtime,” he said. Mthembu emphasized the importance of the 'Year of Mandela' and said that the community of KwaDukuza has youth as its majority population. “This therefore calls for us to ensure that adequate programmes are put in place to ensure mentorship, nurturing and development of youth as leaders of tomorrow; our objective is clear, it is to give youth a conducive environment that enables them to be better individuals that will help better the current status quo which is heavily characterised by unemployment, poverty and inequality. During the Easter Weekend, we set to have the Mayoral Games that will have various sporting codes including indigenous games. We are also having an inaugural youth summit, next week, from the 23rd until the 25th March 2018. We will use these events as a vehicle to refresh our mandate with regards to youth focused programmes.”

76-year-old Jayaganum Venketsamy was murdered at his home in High Ridge during an alleged house robbery on Sunday night. The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community. According to KwaDukuza SAPS spokesperson, Constable Sibusiso Khuzwayo, Venketsamy was sitting in the lounge with his wife when two men armed with knives broke into their home. The robbers allegedly began stabbing the elderly man on the upper left part of his body. “They proceeded to ask his wife to take off

her ring. Fearing for her life, she complied with the culprits. When IPSS rescue arrived, the man was declared dead on the scene. It is suspected that these criminals were after jewellery as they searched the entire house for more jewellery,” said Khuzwayo. He added that police are still investigating and no one has been arrested. “As SAPS we urge our people to be cautious all the time as none of us can predict when culprits might strike. We also condemn such acts but we will work tirelessly to bring these criminals to justice.” A case of murder was opened at KwaDukuza SAPS.

Hesto makes grand sponsorship By Xpress Reporter

GRAND GESTURE: KwaDukuza Municipal Speaker Cllr. Phumlile Zulu (second from left) and Dr Albertina Luthuli (second from right) with officials

Inkosi Albert Luthuli Secondary School was a hive of activity on Monday, 19 March 2018 as they graciously received an epic sponsorship from Hesto Harnesses. Among the officials present at the event were Dr Albertina Luthuli, representatives from the Department of Education as well as local government delegates. Hesto Harnesses granted the sponsorship of computers and a printer to the value of approximately R600 000 to the school last year. However, the facilities were only installed this year, as the school did not have electricity at the time. School Principal, Mr NE Mhlongo thanked Hesto Harnesses and referred to them as the “game changers.”

Yesterday, toll gates were unoccupied by staff, and vehicles cruised by without paying toll fees.

Intertoll staff put down tools and barricaded the road with burning tyres on Monday morning. Police were deployed to Marianhill‚ Mtunzini‚ Mvoti and the Tongaat toll plazas to keep a sharp eye on the protesters. Intertoll staff demonstrated with plea boards which read “A living wage now” and “create decent jobs and ban labour brokers”. Unconfirmed reports state that workers earn as little as R2900 per month. an asset in India's 2019 World Cup squad. One of the stormy Jayce Singh is a former petrels of administrator and internationa sports Patron of the KZNCU l cricket, Kevin Pietersen, the SA born England star , has dropped a strong hint that he would be retiring from the game to which he brought an abrasiveness which got him into trouble on numerous occasions. He could be regarded as a "flawed genius" because of the many brilliant innings he played for England at all levels. He wants to move on from cricket to devote more time to his conservation work with rhinos (similar to Mark Boucher's). The EPL, FA Cup and the Champions League (CL) have all reached an interesting and exciting stage. The battle for 2nd to 4th positions is hotting up as Manchester City needs just 9 points from 8 matches to wrap up the title. The draw for the CL has left many intriguing clashes and if the results go according to form, then the semi-finals will be well-worth a final. The FA Cup draw for the semi-finals has been made and Chelsea will meet Southampton while Tottenham Hotspurs will play Manchester United. Both games will be played at Wembley to ensure neutrality. In the PSL, Maritzburg United has reached 3rd position on the log, the first time that they have obtained such a high placement. KZN supporters will be hoping that they can maintain this position and even challenge for the title. The last word. How many us are aware that a national championships took place over the weekend ? Athletics South Africa (ASA) held its meeting at the Tuks track in Pretoria where many of our world-class athletes were competing. Except for the absence of Wayde van Niekerk, most of the others like Akine Simbine and Anaso Jobodwana were there. There were outstanding performances by the likes of Caster Semenya and Justine Palframan. Also, 17-year old Zeney van der Walt who came second in the 400 metres hurdles in a time of 55.05 to smash a 35-year old record held by the legendary Myrtle Bothma. But did the thousands of athletics fans see these performances on TV or hear them on radio ? What is the use of ASA wanting to promote the sport if it is not prepared to showcase the athletes for the benefit of the youth who can only be inspired by their heroes and heroines ? Furthermore, what is SASCOC, which is there to look after the interests of its affiliates, doing ? Except for worrying about positions in the organisation. And SABC and Multichoice ? Only mainstream sports cannot be catered on TV. Some sports have been over-killed. Let the suits in the suites get off their butts and promote the sport for which they have been elected as custodians ! Until the next time, have a happy sporting week.

of the culprit. In this series they feel that the Australians are getting away with murder while the South Africans are being constantly cited and fined. However, thus far 5 players have been fined - David Warner, Nathan Lyons and Mitchell Marsh (Australia), Quinton de Kock and Rabada (SA). So these statistics put pay to those arguments. Rabada and CSA have appealed the banning and the hearing would have taken place on Monday by teleconference. If his appeal is successful, then he would be able to take his place in the team for the test that begins on Thursday (tomorrow). If not, the Proteas will have to recall Morne Morkel since Dale Steyn has made himself unavailable owing to his ankle injury not being fully healed. It's a wise decision since Steyn has broken down a number of times in the recent past and put his team at a disadvantage. As far as Rabada is concerned, he is a loose cannon who has to be roped in by the Proteas management before he self-destructs. Nobody doubts his tremendous talent but his temperament is definitely in doubt. He should take his own advice and stay away from the batsman after he has dismissed him. one too many in my opinion. As much as people might say that this is test cricket and, therefore, the intensity of the competition must not be diluted by "petty" rules, one cannot allow the law of the jungle to prevail on a cricket field. Cricket cannot be equated to football and rugby which are contact sports and, therefore, can lead to altercations amongst opponents. The only contacts that are made are between bat and ball, between ball and body/pads/gloves/helmet, etc. There should be no contact between players from opposite teams except for congratulatory gestures or accidental collisions between batsmen and fielders when taking a run. The rules are clear and every player participating in the series is well-apprised about them. The problem is in the implementation of them. Many feel that there is "selective" implementation in respect of the origin
