KDM Mayor urged to step in By Xpress Reporter

esidents of High Ridge and Oceanview are furious following water interruptions that have been ongoing for almost two months. Irate community members have expressed their frustration with the issue and some residents even claim that the area is being “targeted”. A fuming resident claims that calls were made to iLembe and she
was told that she was the only complainant. After making more calls to them, she was told that an official will be dispatched to fix the problem. However, she claims that nobody arrived. Following the recent turn of events, the residents in the aforementioned areas said they long for KwaDukuza Mayor, Cllr. Ricardo Mthembu to allow his municipality to handle their water supply and water related queries. Meanwhile, the irate residents are said to have started negotiations with Siza Water Supply in Ballito in trying to find a solution for their water problems.
ILembe Municipality's director of cooperative governance, Yvonne Mathonsi urged residents to lodge complaints in writing if they feel they are not getting the assistance they deserve. “For someone to not have water for more than two weeks is not acceptable. We have dispatchers who are always on standby if residents feel they are not being helped accordingly”. Mathonsi also urged the community members to use the call centre number: 032 437 9371 / 9427 for any other

Local woman receives PhD By Xpress Reporter
Former KwaDukuza resident, Preya Pillay has received her PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) in the discipline of Social Science Education at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) and is undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with. The inspiring 28-year-old has fought against all odds and proven that she is destined for greatness. Pillay matriculated at Stanger Secondary School in 2006. She studied at UKZN and achieved her Bachelor of Education in 2010; Honours in Education in 2011 and Masters in Education in 2012. In 2014, she was granted the National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences Doctoral scholarship of an amount of R130 000 for the period of three years. “During the three years of my PhD I presented my research at various conferences both internationally and locally. I have also published two articles with an accredited Journal. This year I will also
present a paper from my PhD at the world's largest education research conference American Education Research Association (AERA) in San Antonio, Texas, United States of America on 28 April 2017. I also have been invited to the George Arnhold International Summer School, which will take place in Braunschweig, Germany,” she said. In her critical PhD study, Pillay examined the constructions of gender in Business Studies textbooks used in four Southern African countries, revealing somewhat disturbingly, that management and entrepreneurship is scripted almost exclusively in favour of men. “Gender norms embedded in patriarchy continue to be reproduced through exclusion and choices of inclusion. Thus a move towards a gender inclusive curriculum continues to remain a pipedream.” Pillay is currently a permanent lecturer at the University of Free State in the School of Education, lecturing in Curriculum

Tormented Since the age of 15, a Doringkop girl had to endure the sexual advances of her mother's boyfriend. She alleges that during 2015 whilst her mother was away, the stepfather attempted to rape her. He threatened her with a knife and she was forced not to speak about the incident as they lived in his house and had nowhere to go. A year later he again
threatened her with a knife and tried to rape her again. During March this year she broke the silence. A 41-yearold has been arrested and will seek bail this week.
Who's fooling who? A 21-year-old taxi conductor will seek bail next week on a charge of rape. His victim alleges that she was
Studies and Social Justice Education. She is the supervisor for four Honours students; five Master of Education students and two PhD students. She is also a candidate of The Black Women Professoriate Project initiated by the Dean of the University of Free State and says that she sees herself becoming a Professor in the future. “Social justice is my passion. Every project I get involved in has to be about empowering people and challenging assumptions about race and gender,” said Pillay. Pillay cites her parents as her inspiration. “They have moulded and shaped me into the person I am today and who I hope to be in the future. Despite having little financially, my parents encouraged and supported me to achieve excellence. They showed me through their teachings that with hard work, integrity and dedication one can strive for greatness. This PhD is as much theirs as it is mine.” This inspirational young woman urges the youth of today to be focused and get a drinking at a local bar and was picked up by a taxi. The conductor took her to his house where she was allegedly raped. The alleged culprit gives a totally different version. He claims that the victim is his girlfriend and that they were drinking together at another bar. They went home and she stole his phone and fled. She was caught by his family and he hit her. A more in-depth investigation has been called for to see who is telling the truth. The culprit will seek bail this week.

Toll-gate crisis
Sphamandla Gcabashe alleges that he was owing a sum of money to another person. The man allegedly came to his house armed with a firearm and demanded his money. After being told that he did not have the money the man threatened him, took an amplifier valued at R2300 and left. A case was reported and Thulani Dlamini (37) was arrested and charged with armed robbery. He is due at court on 8 May. It must be noted that despite the fact that money is owed to you, you cannot resort to such acts to retrieve your money.
A toll-gate employee has appeared in court on a charge of fraud. According to Aliphon Blake of Durban, he used his bank card at the Umvoti Toll on 15 February 2017. Upon receiving his bank statement he noticed his card was used at Tongaat and Mtunzini tolls which he did not pass on 20 February and R2735 was used as fees. Fraud Unit members tracked the culprit to the Umvoti Toll who had allegedly cloned the victim's card. Luzuko Shusha (25) has been charged with fraud and will seek bail this week.

By Xpress Reporter
A man was killed and eight others were injured in a tragic accident in Ballito on Monday, 17April 2017. According to Paul Herbst of IPSS Medical Rescue, the deceased left home just after 7am when he received a call from his brother for help with
a flat tyre on the side of the N2 South just past the Ballito off-ramp. “The deceased had stopped his Tata Indica behind his brother's Toyota Corolla well into the emergency lane and was standing alongside the car when a black BMW lost control and crashed into
them from behind, crushing him against his car before hitting into the Toyota Corolla. “Eight other occupants of the three vehicles were transported from the collision to various hospitals with injuries ranging from moderate to serious.”

Mayor hands over infrastructure projects By Xpress Reporter
KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) Mayor, Councillor Ricardo Mthembu presided over the official opening of a number of infrastructure projects that will create jobs, beef-up the local economy and provide access to key
points of entries in the rural sections of various communities. Mthembu handed over Mahambehuba Bridge in Malende Upper area. The bridge is worth R4.7 million and took about eight months to complete.
“We applaud the community of Ward 9 for being part of this huge project, this will certainly enhance the local economy through access to areas which were previously inaccessible as a result of flooding in the past,” he said.
Mthembu also officiated the 3,2km road improvement project that amounted to a staggering R15.7 million. He said these are some of the Back to Basics efforts to ensure government delivers according to the needs of the people as expressed in the
Integrated Development Plan. The road upgrade will not only contribute towards strengthening the economy and creating jobs but will also promote road safety in strategic entry points of rural communities. The Mayor also handed
over the Mgigimbe Community Hall that is valued at R1.9 million. He said, “It is clear that government is taking the needs of the community very seriously. We acknowledge that there's still a lot to be done in this community.”

Multipurpose court opened
A combo court / multipurpose court was recently handed over to the community. It is located next to the Stanger Manor Community Hall. Ward 17 Councillor, Madhun Sobram Sing said that youths are encouraged to use this facility. “An appeal is also made to business houses for the sponsorship of benches. It's your asset, treasure it and take care of it. It has cost council R660 000 to revamp the combo court,” he said. Seen are KwaDukuza Municipality Mayor, Cllr Ricardo Mthembu; Ward 17 Cllr Madhun Sobram Sing and KDM Deputy Mayor, Councillor Dolly Govender
Church donates to the needy
KwaDukuza's Zulu Congregational Church commemorated Easter by donating groceries to two needy families on Sunday, 16 April 2017. As part of celebrating the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, this congregation took time to eliminate hunger and resurrect hope in the community of KwaNonhlevu in Groutville. The KwaDukuza branch of this church is led by Reverend Mhlongo but it has its roots across the province and beyond. Photo by Sipho Thobela

International Mother Earth Day
LIFE: 22 April marks International Mother Earth Day
By Xpress Reporter
International Mother Earth Day is observed on 22 April and promotes a view of the Earth as the entity that sustains all living things found in nature. Mother Earth is a common expression for the planet Earth in a number of countries and regions, which reflects the interdependence that exists among human beings, other living species and the planet. The proclamation of 22 April as International Mother Earth Day is an acknowledgement that the Earth and its ecosystems provide its inhabitants with life and sustenance. It also recognises a collective responsibility, as called for in the 1992 Rio Declaration, to promote harmony with nature and the
Earth to achieve a just balance among the economic, social and environmental needs of present and future generations of humanity. International Mother Earth Day is celebrated to remind each of us that the Earth and its ecosystems provide us with life and sustenance. The day provides an opportunity to raise public awareness around the world to the challenges regarding the well-being of the planet and all the life it supports. The theme for 2017 is “Environmental and Climate Literacy.” Education is the foundation for progress. We need to build a global citizenry fluent in the concepts of climate change and aware of its unprecedented threat to our planet.
Donate blood and save a life
PARTY TIME: The African National Congress in Greater KwaDukuza Region treated the public to a day of good food and beverages in celebration of President Jacob Zuma's 75th birthday at Sofaya Sports ground, Ntshawini on Monday, 17 April 2017.
The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) will host a blood drive on Saturday, 29 April 2017 at the Supper Room from 9am to 3pm.

Top Ten Car Care Tips
• Check and change the oil. No single step will help an engine last more than regular oil and filter changes will. Conversely, nothing will destroy an engine faster than neglecting oil-level checks or fresh-oil changes. • Flush the cooling system and change coolant once a year. A 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water will keep the cooling system in good shape and prevent corrosion and deposits from building up inside the cooling system. • Change out transmission and differential oils. While not requiring frequent service, these fluids must be changed
according to service intervals. Always use transmission fluid or gear oil of the recommended type and viscosity. • Keep it clean. While washing the outside of the vehicle is obvious, most everything the vehicle ran over can also get stuck to the underside. Hosing off winter salt and road grime is a good idea. • Everything with moving parts needs grease to survive. This ball joint went into early retirement due to poor lubrication. • Nothing keeps paint looking good and protected like a coat of quality wax. Apply wax at least every six months.

• Driveline components such as u-joints also require regular lubrication. The driveline may have to be removed to access the zerk grease fitting. • Protect the interior plastic by parking the vehicle in the shade, using a window deflector screen, and applying a UV protectant to prevent the plastic and vinyl from drying out. • Inspect, clean, and repack wheel bearings with wheel bearing grease according to service intervals. Wheel bearings and grease are inexpensive compared to spindle and hub replacement, or liberated wheels rolling down the road ahead of you. • Brake fluid is hygroscopic. This means it is adept at attracting moisture. Moisture causes components to corrode and fail. Replace fluid and bleed system once a year. Brake fluid is cheap. Calipers, hoses, and sensors are expensive.

Fuel Saving Tips
• Check Your Tyre Pressure: Under-inflated tyres increase rolling resistance between your vehicle and the road. Inflated tyres decrease rolling resistance between your vehicle and the road. Correctly inflated tyres results in increased mileage of approximately 3.3%. Underinflated tyres are not only dangerous, they increase the rolling resistance between the vehicle's tyres and the road. To overcome the extra drag, the engine will have to work harder and therefore consume more fuel. • Service Your Car Regularly: A badly maintained vehicle is unlikely to perform as it is designed to. Problems such as partially blocked filters, poor oil performance and emissions control systems defects may occur. These and other factors will prevent your engine from functioning as well as

engine speeds will make the engine consume more fuel. This is because, under high loads and speeds, the engine is not operating very efficiently. Accelerating more steadily to the desired speed will reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Using the engine in its most efficient range can reduce consumption and emissions: • Avoid Short Journeys: On short journeys when an engine is cold it uses more fuel because some of the energy in the fuel is used to heat the engine. The catalytic converter in the exhaust, which reduces harmful emissions, is also less efficient when cold. Cold start journeys, therefore, lead to high emissions and high fuel consumption for several minutes after start up. It is best to avoid such journeys as much as possible. • Change Down a Gear: When driving in a steep hill, do not labour the engine at low engine speeds. It is better to use a lower gear and keep the engine speed higher.

They change airflow over the vehicle and increase the aerodynamic draft. Opening sunroofs and windows will also increase air drag over the car. This means a great force is needed to drive the vehicle through the air, requiring extra power from your engine, and increasing fuel consumption and emissions. • Use High Quality Fuels: Using high quality fuels, such as BP Ultimate, will allow the vehicle to run more efficiently, enabling improved combustion quality thus reducing fuel consumption and lowering emissions. Blues great Terry to leave Chelsea
Chelsea great John Terry will leave the club at the end of the season, the Premier League leaders announced on Monday. "John Terry and Chelsea Football Club today jointly announce our captain will leave the club at the end of the season," said a club statement. The 36-year-old former England central defender has made 713 appearances for the west London side, third in the Blues' all-time list. But, despite being Chelsea's captain, Terry has become an increasingly peripheral figure under Italian manager Antonio Conte and has made just five league appearances so far this season. "I will decide on my future in due course, but for now I am committed to helping the team achieve success this season," said Terry in a joint statement issued with Chelsea. "After 22 years there is so much to say and so many people to thank at this great football club." Terry made his debut in 1998 and has captained Chelsea on a record 578 occasions while also scoring 66 goals. No one has won more than his 14 major honours with the club.
Terry's medal-winning haul includes four Premier League titles, five FA Cups and three League Cups. He also won the Europa League during Rafael Benitez's brief stint as Chelsea manager and lifted the Champions League trophy in 2012 despite being suspended for the final against German giants Bayern Munich. Terry's statement indicated that he could return to Stamford Bridge in a different role when he finally hangs up his boots. "The club and I have always had a fantastic relationship, which will continue beyond my playing days," he said. "We had some really positive talks but with everything taken into careful consideration I have decided it's the right time for me to leave. "I've always been conscious that I depart at the right time, in the right way, and I feel that the end of this season is the right time for the club and I. "I feel I still have plenty to offer on the pitch but understand that opportunities here at Chelsea will be limited for me. "I'm eager to carry on playing and so will be looking to continue with a new challenge. I will of course always be a Blue and am desperate to end

my final season as a Chelsea player with more silverware." Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia paid tribute to Terry by saying: "He has been an outstanding player, inspirational captain and has always demonstrated an exceptional commitment to the cause. "He will always be held in the highest regard by everybody at Stamford Bridge and we look forward to welcoming him back in the future." There had been speculation that Terry might leave during the January transfer window, but former Italy manager Conte made it clear he wanted the veteran centre-half to stay for the remainder of the campaign. “This squad needs him," Conte said at the time. "He's a great player, but also a great man and for me it's fantastic to have a person like him to help me in my first season at Chelsea. "For this reason, I repeat, John stays with us." Terry, however, has not played for Chelsea since their 2-0 FA Cup win over Wolves in February, with his last league appearance back in November. Apart from a brief loan spell at Nottingham Forest, Terry has spent his entire professional career with Chelsea. He was chosen as the

Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year in 2005 and won 78 England caps before retiring from international duty. But the end of his international career was overshadowed by allegations he racially abused Anton Ferdinand, the younger brother of his England centre-back partner Rio Ferdinand, while playing for Chelsea against
Queens Park Rangers in 2011. After being stripped of the England captaincy, Terry was cleared of racially abusing Anton Ferdinand in a London court in July 2012. But two weeks later he was charged by the Football Association and he subsequently retired from England duty before the start of an FA hearing that saw him banned for four games.
