PROTECT OUR SHOPS HARD HIT: KwaDukuza Council laments the impact of recent wanton looting incidents on local businesses
KwaDukuza Municipal Council is deeply perturbed by what it has termed “criminality, destruction of property and looting of various businesses”, over the past few days. A statement from the municipality said while “criminals” were targeting liquor outlets and other businesses, great work was put in by law enforcement agencies including private security firms and community bodies, to curb further acts of looting and destruction. “The local businesses and property owners in the area of KwaDukuza CBD, Shakaskraal, Etete, Groutville and Stanger Manor, have been heavily hit by these criminal activities, which has taken place in the past two weeks. The impact of this on our local economy will be felt in the next few months, in particular by those who have been employed by the looted businesses, business owners who have to repair their damaged properties, try to keep tenants, informal traders and public transport sector. This impact will also
contribute to the increase of crime within our communities due to the sharp increase in unemployment, inequalities and poverty,” Council stated. Furthermore, Council notes, the entire food value chain has been greatly affected, as retail outlets were the most affected unlading the food supply industry. Council has urged all food outlets within the municipality's area of jurisdiction to ensure access to food supplies by all, irrespective of race, religion or creed. “The Council appreciates the work that has been done over the last few days by various communities in our area, to ensure the safety of their property and business properties and also to ensure we keep what is left in our area. This has been done to complement the overstretched law enforcement agencies, who have been overwhelmed by the number of people that were part of criminal acts engulfing our area. We have also noted that there has been both positive and negative reaction by
our residents about these initiatives. As Council, we are concerned by various videos that are capturing what is deemed as acts of racism in some of the access points in particular in the area of Ballito,” Council stated. Council further urged the people of KwaDukuza to use the current crisis to advance social cohesion and promote the spirit of Ubuntu. “We are also calling all shops owners and our communities to continue to adhere to Covid 19 regulations. Let us ensure that in all our queues we Soft Cooking Potatoes Tomatoes 1kg adhere to R s o c i a l 10 distancing and wearing of masks,” 2 R Instore C o u n c i l KG Special implored.

Church calls for Ubuntu amid licentious destruction By Xpress Reporter
The church is calling for the restoration of Ubuntu (Humanity) amid all the social chaos that is currently engulfing parts of the country. This follows the widespread unrests of last week, which saw communities going on the rampage and looting businesses
and licentiously destroying property. Speaking to our Xpress Times reporter, the leader of the New Beginnings Centre, a branch of the Pentecostal Holiness Church, Pastor Simon Nyawo, said all the looting that happened last week could have been avoided had society still retained the core values of Ubuntu. “What we are praying for is the return to the principles of U b u n t u (Humanity). The fact that we saw people stealing goods that didn't belong to them is a clear indication that society is bereft of the values of Ubuntu. As
THE COMMUNITY OF KWADUKUZA The army might have been deployed but the Real heroes live amongst us!!! religious leaders our clarion call to the people is that we must all come back to our senses and return to Ubuntu, which is the way that we were all brought up,” stated Pastor Nyawo. On Sunday the 8th of July Pastor Nyawo led his congregation on a
massive clean-up campaign in Velani Township (Etete) where the church is based. He says this was intended to restore a semblance of normality in a society that had been left in tatters by the unrest and pillaging of last week. “Since the 18th of July is the day
that was designated across the globe as the day to honour our great icon, Dr Nelson Mandela, as a church we decided to do our bit. We were also joined by community members on this worthy cause,” Nyawo elucidated.
Mayor says “no to looting and vandalism” By Xpress Reporter
The mayor of Maphumulo Local Municipality, Cllr Zibuyisile KhuzwayoDlamini, is making an impassioned call to the residents of Maphumulo to reject looting and vandalism. Mayor Khuzwayo-Dlamini made these remarks when she led a massive clean-up campaign in the town of Maphumulo on Friday the 16th of July 2021. Khuzwayo-Dlamini led the campaign alongside her deputy, Cllr Zama NcalaneMhlongo and Council Speaker Simphiwe Shange and their fellow councillors and municipal officials. The municipality says the
campaign was in response to the unrest across KwaZuluNatal and Gauteng, and was aimed at conducting and assessment as the small town had experienced some isolated incidents of vandalism. “We condemn the acts of violence, looting and vandalism in our community, and we urge all citizens to work together in protecting our town and say no to looting and vandalism. We also wish to commend all t h o s e
community members who took a stand and co-ordinated volunteers through social media to assist in sweeping the streets, helping local shopkeepers and showing solidarity with business owners who were affected by violence.
Let's continue to protect our town,” the mayor stated. The municipality says it continues to call for peace and solidarity among community members, the business sector and law enforcement agencies.

Tributes pour in for ANCYL leader
DECEASED: The late regional secretary of the ANCYL, Mncedisi Magubane
By Xpress Reporter
The sudden death of the regional secretary of the ANC Youth League in the General Gizenga Mpanza Region, Mncedisi Magubane (36), has come as a numbing shock to the political fraternity and the community of iLembe District. The late Magubane passed away on Friday the 16th of July 2021, after being involved in a car accident on Monday the 12th of July. Apart from serving as the ANCYL secretary, Magubane was also a ward councillor for Ward 17 in Ndwedwe Municipality. Ndwedwe Local Municipality said in a statement that the late Magubane served
as the chairperson of the Youth Advisory Subcommittee in the municipality. Ndwedwe Mayor Cllr Nathi Chili said the entire municipality had received the news of the death of Cllr Magubane with a tremendous sense of shock and disbelief. “We are reeling from shock. We were still expecting much contribution from a young councillor like Cllr Magubane. The whole area of Ndwedwe is poorer with his passing,” Cllr Chili bemoaned. The ANC Youth League in the region said the deceased had led with distinction in a number of congress youth structures. The League said the deceased had been seized with ensuring that youth development and matters pertaining to youth empowerment were located at the heart of government's agenda. “The Youth League conveys its heartfelt condolences to the Magubane family, the Goba family, Ward 17 community and the whole District of iLembe. Indeed the congress movement has been robbed a dedicated and devoted leader and an activist. Ulale kahle nobhala wolusha eGizenga. Lala uphumule mkhonto. We shall remain unshaken and resolute in the struggle for economic freedom in our life time,” the League said in a statement.

“We salute our frontline heroes” In March 2020 our country together with the rest of the world was plunged into what we thought would be the most apocalyptic days of our lives. The Covid-19 pandemic needs no introduction it has turned our once normal lives upside down. During this time we celebrated and acknowledged the soldiers of this medical war the frontline workers: our doctors, nurses and health care professionals. Their efforts did not go unnoticed or unappreciated.
We, as a community would therefore be remiss if we did not today acknowledge the 'frontline heroes' of the past weeks unrest. The brave men of our community. Sunday, 11 July 2021 began as a normal day for many, with few messages of uncertainty and caution making its rounds on social media. No one knew what to expect. No one was prepared for what did happen. At the first indication of unrest our men began their nightlong vigil. The next 24 hours was to

bring an unprecedented amount of turmoil on our town and province. Through it all, our 'frontline heroes' stood firm. There is much to be said regarding the happenings of the last week. Political agendas, social ramifications and the economic impact can be spoken about at length. Amidst the smoke that has begun to settle and the many words being thrown around, these few have to be said. To the brothers, husbands, fathers and sons, we say a big Jazakallah and Thank You. On Monday, 12 July 2021 you gathered in your numbers braving the unknown. You chose to stand in defense for our town Stanger. With tensions running high and everyone on high alert you adapted to the changing situation and warded off an almost ever-increasing horde of rioters. You watched gates being pulled off the walls as if it were paper, glass fronts shattered without a second thought and businesses being looted in a matter of minutes. You watched our town become a ruined wasteland. And still you stood firm. It took strength beyond measure to stand resistant before a tide of people moving with determined intent. As the day progressed, the crowd increased as did their seemingly insatiable greed. Yet no one retreated. The entire week went by, you devoted hours of the day and night only fortifying the town and securing the residential areas. A full night's sleep and hot meals a luxury that most of you willingly relinquished. Eventually calm seemed to settle. Yet you went out
assisting the fallen businesses, repairing and restoring. Once the harsh reality of the unrest hit-and its impact on the poorer members of the community - you again sacrificed time to help feed the community. Driving through the streets today, (we are) ever grateful that we still have a town at all. Yes, a number of shops were looted and destroyed. But knowing the power and persistence of the crowds, one can only marvel at the number of businesses that were saved only because of the pure tenacity of the men of our community. In the interim hats off to our brave men and women who volunteered their service through neighbourhood watch and as individuals. They have filled the gap when law enforcement failed us! Special thanks go out to all those families that Provided light meals and coffee/tea on a daily basis for almost a week. Let's continue to work together as a community while law enforcement get their acts together to prevent what happened recently which will leave an indelible mark on our democracy and history,” added Singh.

Muslim organizations up their game
Sadics Organization offers much needed aid The catastrophic 12th July 2021 was a day filled with anxiousness, trepidation and chaos for the vast majority of our population. The violent looting left many scratching around for a loaf of Bread, a sip of milk and scores of hungry babies. We have heard the plight. We were equally handicapped. The burning desire and natural flame of humanity in the heart of every Muslim immediately mobilized our community to source necessary, essential items for human survival despite suffering much loss. Muslim communities across SA joined our local business men and responded
positively to our calls. In particular we are thankful the Muslim communities of Gauteng, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town for their heartfelt contributions to our little town. SADICS (Stanger and districts Islamic cultural society) received the copious loads and with the assistance of Muslim members of the Kwa Dukuza community. Qurbani (Sacrifice)
Qurbani means sacrifice. Every year during the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah, Muslims around the world slaughter an animal a goat, sheep, cow or camel to reflect the Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail, for the sake of The Almighty God. The practice of Qurbani can be traced back to the Prophet Ibrahim, who dreamed that God ordered him to sacrifice his only son, Ismail. In his devotion to God, Ibrahim agreed to follow his
dream, which was acommand of The Almighty and perform the sacrifice. But The Almighjty intervened and sent a ram to be sacrificed in Ismail's place. Ismail was spared because Ibrahim proved he would sacrifice his son as an act of piety, for the sake of The Almighty despite the loss it would have caused him. The continued practice of sacrifice
The Haj (pilgrimage) is one of the five pillars of Islam and is considered one of the greatest religious duties. In the Holy Quran The Almighty says: “It is compulsory on the people for the sake of the Almighty to perform Haj to his house, for those who are able to undertake the journey to him”. Muslims who physically and financially capable are required to perform the Haj at least once in their lifetime. Haj literally means to set out for a place. However, Islamically it refers to the annual pilgrimage that Muslims take to Makkah with the intention of performing religious rites in accordance with the method prescribed by the Master Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be upon him). Haj and its rites were first prescribed by the Almighty God in the time of the prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him). He was also the one who was entrusted by the Almighty to build the Ka'bah the House of the Almighty with his son
acts as a reminder of Ibrahim's obedience to God. Thus we are reminded of our duty and obligation to be obedient and sumbit ourselves to the will and command of the most kind, merciful and benevolent creator and controller of the universe, The Almighty. Eid-al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, is celebrated during the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar, known as Dhul Hijjah
HAJ (Pilgrimage) ismaeel (peace be upon him). After building the Ka'bah, The prophet Ibrahim would come to Makkah to perform Haj every year. After his death his son continued this practice. Many years later the practice was revived by the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) as ordained by The Almighty. Haj is considered as one of the best deeds a person can that a muslim can perform in his life. It is thus mentioned in a Prophetic tradition when asked which deed is the best, The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) replied amongst other aspects “An Accepted

which translates as 'Lord of the Pilgrimage'. It is during this month that pilgrims travel to Mecca in order to visit the Kaaba. Hajj is performed on the eighth, ninth and tenth days of the lunar month At least one third of the meat from the animal should be given to the poor and needy. Traditionally, a Muslim would keep one third of the meat for their family and give the final third to their neighbours.
Haj”. Haj is a chance to wipe out the past sins and start life afresh. Haj deepens the faith of a person. One of the most beautiful and greatest gifts and rewards to be gifted to the one performing Haj by The Almighty is his forgiveness of all sins. The Haj unites the Muslims of the world into an International kinship. More than two million Muslims from around the world perform the Haj each year, thus serving as a unifying force in Islam by bringing followers of diverse backgrounds together in worship of The one Almighty. It is also a manifestation of the belief in the one and only God Almighty in which all pilgrims and muslims worship and obey the One lord. In essence the Haj is a means of removal of sins and gaining proximity and nearness to the Almighty lord. Whoever performs the Haj with the clean intention only for the sake of The Almighty alone, the Almighty God definitely accepts his Haj. The community of eTete and surrounding areas is baffled as to why a cherished school in the area, Radha Roopsingh Primary, was criminally targeted last week. The school's administration block was set alight on Wednesday, resulting in the loss of the whole records of the school as the office equipment was also stolen. The school's kitchen was also broken into, with food and appliances being stolen. Umhlali SAPS are investigating the incident, and Xpress Times understands that some of the stolen goods have been recovered. U m h l a l i p o l i c e communications officer Captain Vinny Pillay told Xpress Times that for now, two suspects have been arrested. However the two suspects have not yet been positively linked to the burning of the school. “The two suspects who have been arrested were found in possession of some of the items stolen from the school. However we are yet to establish evidence linking them directly to the burning of the school,” Captain Pillay stated. Both learners and parents have expressed great sadness at this unfortunate incident. Meanwhile, the school

principal, Mr CL Naidoo, wishes to inform parents and the community that the school will not be able to reopen on the 26th of July 2021. “It's very unfortunate but at the present moment the structural integrity of the buildings cannot be guaranteed. The Department of Public Works is expected to come to the school together with the safety officer to
conduct an inspection. We will inform the public once we are ready to reopen the school,” Mr Naidoo stated. Meanwhile, the KwaZuluNatal Legislature's portfolio committee on education has expressed outrage at the destruction of more than 50 schools in KwaZulu-Natal. The chairperson of the portfolio committee SM Sonjica said,
“We are in shock and cannot believe that communities can turn against their own schools, undermining and attacking the future of their own children. The committee members intend to undertake school visits to see for themselves the extent of the damage caused by these acts of hooliganism and criminals who have no regard for the future of our children”.
Bafana Bafana win Cosafa Cup Bafana Bafana claimed Cosafa Cup honours with a 5-4 penalty shootout final win over Senegal after the match ended 0-0 after extra-time. It was the same line up for Bafana that defeated Mozambique in the semi-finals, with the host side starting the brighter of the two sides at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. There was little in the way of goalmouth action though until Victor Letsoalo got in behind the S e n e g a l defence before forcing a strong save from goalkeeper Pape N'diaye A Siyethemba Sithebe freekick into the box soon after was hastily
cleared by a combination of Senegal defenders. The Lions of Teranga won a free-kick on the right-hand side that was curled in by Dominic Mendy on his left foot to the back post and Ba rose highest but headed narrowly wide of the target - the visitors' number nine causing problems for the Bafana defence with his aerial presence. Yusuf Maart then unleashed a speculative effort from long range that was straight down the throat of N'diaye, but South Africa began to dominate possession and push Senegal back. Monnapule Saleng over hit a 23rd minute set-piece before Letsoalo headed narrowly over from a Maart long throw into the box for the last real chance of the first half. Sithebe came close to scoring after the break when Maart rolled the ball into his path outside the box and his sweetly struck strike skimmed the top of the crossbar. Bafana had a good penalty shout which
was turned down by the referee, before Ba rifled a powerful effort out of nowhere from the outside of the box to the near post that Veli Mothwa did well to keep out. Sithebe delivered from the right and the ball fell to Ngcobo in the box at close range but he couldn't connect with the strike as it hit his knee and feel at the keeper's feet. Ndiaye then made a good save from Maart's effort from a tight angle on the right close to the byline as the match wore down. Neither side were willing to give an inch defensively and were happy to sit back ahead of the final whistle and start of extratime. The tie remained cagey and ultimately and almost inevitably went to penalties, with Bafana prevailing as Motha denied Mendy after Ethan Brooks had his spot kick saved, and N'diaye missed the crucial kick as the shootout went to sudden death.
