SANRAL weighs in on prolonged N2 project M By Xpress Reporter

otorists can breathe a sigh of relief as the abandoned N2 roadwork between Ballito and KwaDukuza is set to continue. In 2016, the N2 was narrowed down to a single lane for upgrade. The construction stopped following allegations that the main contractor Nyoni Projects was liquidated. According to Eastern Region project manager Ridhwaan Mohamed, it was never SANRAL's intention for this work to be delayed for such a prolonged period. We encountered many challenges along the way with the National Treasury in terms of appointing a new contractor as well as to ensuring

continuity regarding supervision. There has also been the issue around sub-contracting of works which has delayed all projects by SANRAL,” said Ridhwaan Mohamed. “However consensus has now been reached and we are in the process of finalizing the proforma tender document. We are hoping to have a contractor on site by this month. Due to the long delay we are looking into having a day and night work as well. We are looking at construction duration of approximately 10 months,” concluded Ridhwaan Mohamed. Motorists urged SANRAL to speed up this process as it becomes difficult to travel on a single lane especially during peak hours.

Local clinic under fire By Xpress Reporter

The family of a 42-year-old KwaDukuza resident who passed away on Saturday, 10 August 2019, have expressed their anger and disappointment as she was allegedly denied treatment at the Glenhills Clinic. On 5 August 2019, Reshmee Deokie, had been experiencing severe headaches, and her brother, Shiven Konar, rushed her to the Glenhills Clinic. “My sister had complained about having headaches, a few minutes later, she was not responsive. We managed to get her into the car and we rushed her to the clinic. Upon arrival, I asked the security guard to please call a nurse to the car as we have an emergency. She just stood there and stared at us, so we went in and looked for a nurse. We explained the situation to the nurse, who then told us to take my sister to the back rooms, which are containers.

“We went to the back rooms and asked for help. A nurse told us to put my sister in a wheelchair and take her back into the clinic. By this time, my sister began having seizures, so I drove back to the front of the clinic,” said Konar. He added that once they were at the front of the clinic again, he was told by a nurse to put his sister onto a wheelchair. “I asked the security guards to please help to put her onto the wheelchair but they refused. The nurse then told us that she does not know what to do and cannot help us, before walking away.” Konar then rushed his sister to the local hospital where it was discovered that she had suffered a brain haemorrhage. Reshmee Deokie passed away on 10 August 2019. She leaves behind her five children, her mum, husband, brothers and sisters. “We just want justice because my sister was the breadwinner for her children,” said Konar.

Women led and owned emergent contractors in KwaZulu-Natal were presented with opportunities and construction industry advice during a two-day summit solely aimed at empowering women in the Built Environment sector on 16 and 17 August 2019. The Summit took place at Hampshire Hotel, Ballito, and is the brainchild of the Department of Human Settlements and Public Works which between them disburse almost a R6 billion Budget for infrastructure development and housing provision in the province. The summit forms part of province-wide events commemorating Women's Month. The two-day Summit featured informative presentations and robust discussions towards the radical socio-economic empowerment of women through infrastructure delivery. Speaking at the event, KwaDukuza Acting Mayor, Councillor Dolly Govender, paid tribute to Mama Nokukhanya Luthuli, describing her as a woman of fortitude.

“Programme Director, I felt it was fitting that we pay a special tribute to Mama Nokukhanya and also unearth her story so that we as women begin to realise our pivotal role in society,” said Govender. She added that Mama Nokukhanya was an outstanding farmer and grew her own vegetables, sugar cane and fruits. She supplemented her family's income through her farming activities during the time that

South Africa plays a pivotal role in the economy of the country. “The industry employs some 40% of the country's population, however, male employment far supersedes the employment of females. Because of the many boundaries women face in the industry they turn to becoming entrepreneurs and opening smaller construction companies, which bring along with it its own challenges. The industry is competitive and the rate of business turnover is high. The question therefore is do women have the necessary skills to advance in the industry?” She said that she is confident that the Summit will introduce them to many women who have advanced and beaten all sorts of challenges thus becoming successful business owners and leaders in the industry who will in turn capacitate those who are emerging. “It is also time for men to recognise these women and to work together to grow the industry and ensure that women also have a place at the boardroom table, are heard and recognised for their achievements and growth.

Yesterday, the South African Teacher's Union in KwaDukuza picketed outside the KwaDukuza Magistrates Court, holding placards to voice their grievances regarding how the case of the late Gideon Phahla is being handled. Gideon Phahla (former Aldinville Primary School educator) was violently

murdered in his home, in Thembeni earlier last year. According to SADTU Secretary in KwaDukuza Nduduzo Ngcobo, SAPS and NPA have failed to collect tangible evidence since last year to bring culprits to book. “As SADTU we are here to stand firm and state that family, friends, colleagues of Gideon Phahla deserve to get justice. We urge the state to put more effort in this case

In the second game played between Darnall United and Singh's Fireworks (both teams suffered defeats to The Quartz and Gledhow United a fortnight ago) both teams had plenty to play for in a thrilling encounter. Darnall took a 6-3 lead after the team events with 6 singles to determine the winner. Vinesh Geanballey defeated Meersing Sobram whilst Preolin Muthoosamy defeated Ajen Singh to secure the points for Darnall. Sanjay Singh, Mervin Pillay and Paddy Padayachee managed to add some consolation wins for Singh's Fireworks by defeating Jerry Arunachellum, Terrence Subban and Kevin Govender respectively. Alvin does KwaDukuza proud Prolific sportsman, Alvin Moonsamy did KwaDukuza proud when he was selected to represent Maritzburg United at the 7th Global Veteran Football tournament that was hosted by Klang Star Veteran Football Club at the Hang Tuah Stadium in Malacca in Malaysia from 16-20 August 2019. 7 countries where represented at the tournament with Maritzburg representing South Africa. Alvin further brought honour when he scored his first international goal against India, though they lost the game 3-1 in the round robin fixtures. He was then selected into a squad into a team selected from the different countries to play the curtain raiser to the finals which they won. He was one of two players from South Africa selected, the other being the goal keeper from Maritzburg.
