Gloom for KZN as Ramaphosa snaps back
By Musa Mnyandu
climate of despondency is pervading throughout AKwaZulu-Natal, after former Health Minister Zweli Mkhize failed in his bid to unseat Cyril Matamela Ramaphosa as President of the African National Congress.
Mkhize, whose name is still tainted by the Digital Vibes scandal, managed to shrug off all suspicion around him, to emerge as the only viable candidate to challenge the seemingly indomitable Ramaphosa in the run up to the ANC's 55th national elective conference. However his valiant fight to turn the tables on the “Buffalo” proved ineffectual, as Ramaphosa simply cruised to a convincing victory, leaving the party's KZN province stunned and reeling in shock.
With more than 900 conference delegates coming from KZN, where Mkhize enjoyed overwhelming support, it looked as though Ramaphosa had finally met his match, especially since KZN remains the ANC's biggest province.
However when former President Kgalema Motlanthe, the head of the ANC's Electoral Committee, announced the results, Ramaphosa's camp broke out in great jubilation after their candidate garnered 2476 votes, as compared to the not so paltry 1897 votes earned by his rival.
The position of ANC deputy president was contested by Paul Mashatile, Ramaphosa's greatest supporter Oscar Mabuyane and Justice Minister Ronald Lamola. This came after Deputy President David
Mabuza declined nomination from the floor. Mashatile, the party's former Treasurer General and acting Secretary General, emerged victorious, after bagging 2178 votes, while Oscar Mabuyane staged a spirited but losing fight, walking away with 1858 votes. Ronald Lamola consoled himself with a measly 315 votes.
Controversial Minerals and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe retained his position as National Chairperson after narrowly beating his closest rival Stanley Mathabatha with 2062 to 2018 votes. The third candidate for this position, David Masondo, receiving a thorough hiding, scrapping through with only 280
votes.
The conference had also adopted the resolution to amend the party's Constitution, to allow for an additional position in the Office of the Secretary General, in an attempt to “beef up” the office. This decision meant that the traditional “top six office bearers” had now become “top seven office bearers”.
Ill-discipline
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula, who is expected to resign from government soon, surprised many by beating his two rivals for the allpowerful position of Secretary General. Mbalula garnered 1692 votes, while Phumulo Masualle
received 1590, and Mdumiseni Ntuli obtained 1080.
From there on it was an all-female affair, as Nomvula Mokonyane received the nod as the 1st Deputy Secretary General, with Maropene Ramokgopa settling for the position of 2nd Deputy Secretary General.
The delegates also decided to fortify the role of women in the top seven by opting for Gwen Ramokgopa as the new Treasurer General. Ramokgopa walloped Pule Mabe, Bejani Chauke and Mzwandile Masina.
At the time of going to press yesterday (Tuesday), the ANC was stil expected to announce the results

The KwaDukuza local branch of the Ilembe Chamber of Commerce Industry and Tourism (ICCIT) has stepped up its interventions designed to address the scourge of crime in the KwaDukuza CBD.
In keeping with the iLembe Chamber's social partnership approach, the local committee and branch has begun working co-operatively with all local authorities to achieve an effective and sustainable private security strategy and presence in the KwaDukuza CBD, an immediate priority identified.
Engagements with landlords, property owners and security experts are being conducted to obtain input and suggestions on implementing a focused, crime-prevention initiative.
An initial precinct for the Security Pilot was identified as the area that is bordered by Chief Albert Luthuli, Goolam Suleman (Hulett), Cato and Mahatma Gandhi (including King Shaka and Lindley) Streets. The pilot phase, headed by a former senior police official and other safety and security experts, focuses on security in the identified precinct, and will be funded by defined landlord contributions.
Introduced officially last
week, the security pilot phase will run for an initial period of one month until mid-January, and CBD patrols are already
underway with positive results being reported. The initiative is fully supported by local security firms.
CBD beat duties are already in evidence, with disruptive and sting operations also happened on a regular basis.

Soldiers deployed to power plants
Members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) have been deployed to safeguard some of Eskom's power plants, amid heightened energy crisis in the country.
In an announcement made at the weekend, the Presidency said army detachments have been deployed to four power plants, however their exact role has not been made clear. It is however understood that
the army's primary purpose at the four electricity stations is to prevent sabotage.
“Eskom can confirm that the SANDF is being deployed at Eskom. Eskom has received deployments at four sites this afternoon, Majuba, Camden, Grootvlei and Tutuka power stations,” Eskom stated.
A number of serious crimes involving Eskom contractors and employees have been unearthed this
year with high profile arrests being made. However the power utility continues to struggle to keep the lights on, with the country being placed on Stage 4 of loadshedding this weekend, after climbing to Stage 6 at the weekend.
The power utility's CEO Andre De Ruyter announced his retirement recently, which will take effect at the end of March 2023.

200km. Rest, have an energy drink and continue once well-rested. Do not drink and drive Try to recognise potentially dangerous drivers on and pedestrians alongside the road and keep well clear of them
• • • •
Be visible - drive with your lights on Headlights should be dipped well before an approaching vehicle is within the range of the main beam.
•
Always wear your seat belt and see that everyone in the car is wearing theirs.
Drive defensively Stay within the speed limit at all times Only overtake when it is absolutely safe to do so
•
• • •
Maintain at least a 2-second following distance - this distance should be increased at night, in foggy or rainy conditions and when the road is wet. Expect others to not be as obedient to the law as yourself

Protecting your child against “child grooming”
What is child grooming and who is targeted?
Child grooming is defined as befriending and establishing an emotional connection with a child (and sometimes their family), to lower the child's defences for the purpose of sexual abuse.
How does it happen?
Child groomers may try to gain a parent or guardian's trust to gain easy access to a child. A trusting relationship with the family, enables a child groomer to spend time with a child by babysitting or inviting them for sleepovers.
Child groomers often approach their victims over the Internet, sometimes posing as children themselves, before asking to meet in person.
Help your children to understand who they should and should not be communicating with on social media.
Encourage them to only interact with people they already know. Keep an eye out for changes in your child's behaviour.
