Mayor vows to outfit 600 learners

Octavia Nhaca has last week launched this year's instalment of the annual Dress-A-Child Campaign, which seeks to give dignity and hope to underprivileged schoolchildren through the provision of full uniforms.
This year's campaign, which is expected to cost the municipality just over R1.3 million, started at Radha Roopsingh Primary School in Ward 20 (Etete) where 20 deserving learners received their full sets of uniforms. Radha Roopsingh cater for children from indigent communities in the area of Etete and beyond.
Mayor Nhaca used the launch to highlight the upsurge of gender based violence against women and children in KwaDukuza and cautioned learners of entertaining strangers within their gender based violence. The event will take place at Ashram Primary School, on Friday the 24th of March 2023, starting at 90am. The entrance fee will be R50. communities.
The event will entail a 2.5km fun run, obstacle and lots of other fun activities.
“I felt it was important for me to address you today on a topic on gender based violence against women and children. This is a serious issue in our communities and affects normal schooling of a learner. Be careful of strangers no matter what type or form which they may choose to present themselves. Abuse happens in various types, you can be physically abused, emotionally, financially and much more. We need to be careful in school and at home,” Nhaca stated.
The municipality this year budgeted R2 235-00 to outfit reach deserving learner, with a total of 600 learners being targeted across 30 identified schools in KwaDukuza. The initiative is intended to promote equality and uniformity in a schooling environment, and to help restore self-confidence and dignity among all learners.
