OPEN FOR ESSENTIAL SERVICES 9am - 12pm
We will be following strict regulations and social distancing regulations as per our Essential Service Permit
Lockdown restrictions eased for some industries STANGER
takes extra precautionary measures As the coronavirus spreads through our country, a number of essential services have been compromised and various businesses have had to close their doors temporarily, following staff member/s testing positive for COVID-19. The reality is that this could affect any business. In order to mitigate risk, STANGER SUPERSPAR has decided to split its staff complement and implement shifts, whereby each shift will operate as a unit and have no overlap with any other shift or unit. This will significantly limit interaction amongst staff in an attempt to better contain any potential exposure to the virus. With immediate effect, two separate teams will manage store operations during the day, while the night shift team will continue to operate through the night to merchandise, clean and prepare the store for the next day's trade. There will be no interaction or overlap amongst any of the three teams. “Our goal has always been to provide exceptional customer service and we are trying our utmost to accomplish that, firstly, within the requirements and challenges of the lockdown and, secondly, whilst trying to keep the store as safe, healthy and clean as possible for all our staff and customers,” said Store
Manager, Sunny Somduth. “I believe we have been extremely proactive in ensuring stock availability and in implementing a number of health and safety protocols from the outset to mitigate risk. This is another one of those steps. While we aim to continue with our high standard of service delivery, we do acknowledge that this step will come with its own challenges and we ask our customers to bear with us as we find our feet. We have certainly found that we are all in this together and we thank the Stanger community for their support to date.” The various safety protocols that S t a n g e r S U P E R S PA R h a s implemented to date are: 1. Staff health screening takes place daily whereby a digital thermometer is used to record the temperature of each and every staff member to identify any potential symptoms very early and take the necessary action to avoid any contact situations. Anyone displaying symptoms will be sent home immediately and advised to seek the necessary medical assistance. 2. The entire store, including all service areas and backup areas are deep cleaned every week by a specialised service provider using antibacterial, food-safe chemicals accredited by the National Regulator
X
for Compulsory Specifications. 3. A dedicated staff member sanitises the handles of all trolleys and baskets before and after every use. These also undergo regular deep cleaning. 4. Cleaning and sanitisation of countertops, surfaces and any touchpoints, such as card machines, is taking place with alcohol-based wipes or solution on a continuous basis throughout the store. 5. Alcohol-based sanitiser is available at the store entrance, service departments, all tillpoints and other locations throughout the store. 6. Demarcated floor decals are in place leading up to the tills in order to encourage and remind customers about social distancing protocol. 7. Staff have been issued with 30 days' worth of multivitamins in an attempt to assist them in keeping t h e i r immune systems boosted.

With the extended lockdown now in place until the last minute of Thursday 30 April, some industries have been clamouring for an early return to work. A total of nine individual sectors have been granted their wish, after Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma amended some of the current regulations. Those returning to work, include the following: • Oil refineries will return to work at full capacity. • Mineworkers are being asked to operate at 50% leaving shafts empty and inactive for too for long poses “seismic dangers”. • Suppliers who provide goods to essential services will open. These facilities must stay operational. Artisanal trades for emergency repair work, and stores selling hardware/components will fall under this category.
• Mechanics and professionals who maintain and fix vehicles must also return to work ahead of schedule. • Plumbers, electricians and other tradespersons will now be allowed to operate in emergency situations. • Fishermen and women have been given permission to sell their goods but they aren't allowed to market cooked food. • Employees at retail call centres have been told to return to the office. Operatives are needed to help people settle their store accounts and claim insurance in these unsure financial times. • Employees for the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) have permission to leave their homes and work in public. • IT professionals who help essential services keep their systems working, should also be allowed to work.

KZN Premier warns of SA Coronavirus cases increase intensified lockdown for Durban
South Africa has recorded an additional 124 positive Covid-19 cases and two more deaths. This brings the total number of positive cases in the country to 3 158, with 54 deaths, the health ministry announced on Sunday evening. On Saturday night, during a virtual media briefing, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said the country was sitting at 3 034 positive cases, with 108 021 tests having been conducted. The number of tests conducted has now increased to 114 711. Gauteng, which is the epicentre of the outbreak in the country, now has 1148 confirmed cases, followed by Western Cape 868 and KwaZulu-
Natal 617. The Eastern Cape now has 293 cases, the Free State 100, Limpopo 27, North West 24, Mpumalanga 23, Northern Cape 16, and 42 cases are unallocated. During the briefing on Saturday evening, Mkhize also announced that a nationwide community screening and testing programme rolled out over the past weeks had, so far, screened 900 000 people, of which roughly 11 000 had been referred for testing. He revealed that they were seeing an average of 3.8% of those referred for testing coming back positive.
Hardware stores can now reopen
Stores selling hardware and vehicle components can now reopen as the next phase of the national lockdown begins under strict conditions. Under new regulations, released on Thursday, only “qualified tradespersons” may buy supplies needed for emergency repairs at residential homes. Essential service providers can also buy any hardware and other supplies needed to provide their services. Stores need to keep a register of everyone who bought goods, and
buyers need to sign a form every time they visit the store. Plumbers, electricians, locksmiths, glaziers, roof repair work as well as other trades who do emergency repair work have also now been declared essential services - as have those who provide emergency vehicle repairs for those delivering essential services. Components for these vehicles which are under-going emergency repairs can also now be sold. -Business Insider

SANDF: An intensified lockdown is being implemented in the eThekwini District
The KwaZulu-Natal provincial command council says it has decided to implement an intensified lockdown in the eThekwini District, as Covid-19 cases spike in the metro. This was announced by Premier Sihle Zikalala on Sunday during a media briefing, where he said the province had issued a directive to law enforcement authorities to be strict on the streets and ensure that there were no compromises and violations of the lockdown regulations by the public. The premier said it was becoming clear that the eThekwini district was becoming the epicentre of the virus in the province, as 77% of new cases reported were from there. It has also registered the highest death rate of 4.4% since the start of the pandemic, and has the highest number of contact cases. In a breakdown of district by district, eThekwini has recorded 383 positive cases. "It has therefore become crystal clear that eThekwini district has become the epicentre of Covid-19 in KwaZulu-Natal," the premier said. Of the 52 deaths recorded in the country, Zikalala said 21 were from KwaZuluNatal, and that the province had contributed to 18% of the new cases in the country.
Tiger Brands shuts Durban Albany bakery due to Covid-19 infections Food manufacturing company Tiger Brands has temporarily closed its Durban bakery after some of its staff tested positive for Covid-19. In a statement issued on Wednesday‚ the company said that it had closed the bakery as a precautionary measure and that it had contacted the department of
health and the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD). “The company has taken this decision in line with best practice protocols and in the interest of the health and safety of all its employees at the bakery‚ which is its biggest priority‚” it said. “The company has put in place
measures to support all staff while they undergo Covid-19 testing. All protocols and regulatory requirements as mandated by the department of health and the NICD have been followed.” The company said it had made alternative arrangements to supply its Durban customers from their other facilities.
Department of Basic Education postpones May/June matric rewrite exams The basic education department has postponed the May/June amended senior certificate (old matric) and national senior certificate examinations. This is the matric examination which was to be written by more than 350,000 part-time candidates and includes those who did not meet the pass requirements in the 2019 final exams, as well as those who sought to rewrite to improve their marks, the department said in a statement. Basic education department director general Mathanzima Mweli had written a letter to the heads of provincial educations departments confirming the changes in the plan for the
examinations. “The advent of the Covid-19 virus has led to the early closure of schools during the first term and the declaration of a 21-day lockdown by the President of the Republic of South Africa, commencing from 26 March and concluding on 16 April 2020. The lockdown has since been extended until Thursday, 30April 2020. This has resulted in a disruption to schooling and hence the writing of May/June 2020 examinations has to be re-scheduled,” said Mweli. The May/June 2020 examination was scheduled to start on Monday, May 4 and conclude on Friday, June 26. “At the Hedcom [heads of
education departments council] meeting of 10 April 2020, it was agreed that the May/June examination should be merged with the November 2020 examination.” "The details regarding the merged June and November examination will be communicated to you in due course. Candidates will be informed regarding registration, examination centers and timetables," he said. The department urged all candidates to continue their preparations. Learning and revision material had been made available on the department's website.

ANC weighs in on the looting of food parcels
The African National Congress has voiced its disapproval of looting of food parcels meant to ease the burden on the poor during the lockdown. This comes after recent reports stated that certain members of the ANC allegedly kept food parcels, Jessie Daurte deputy
secretary of the ANC said two members of the party had been suspended for intervening lockdown regulations, "we believe that it is completely unconscionable for anyone to use food parcels right now for political patronage. Arrest them. I don't care who it is, it's wrong" said Duarte
As South Africa is in lockdown as an attempt to curb the spread of Corona Virus, Government is handing over food parcels to the poor as an effort to ensure none suffer during this lockdown. On the late hours of Monday over 57 South Africans had died from Covid19. This is a
developing storyDuarte further encouraged communities to report when they see people looting food parcels, "we are not going to accept this. What we need to do right now is to be there for the poor not to take advantage of them," she added

SASSA grant payment dates changed Lessons learnt from the last payment cycle during the National Lockdown have compelled SASSA to review the payment dates going forward. As from the month of May 2020 disability and Older Persons Grants will be paid from the 4th day of the month. All other grants will be paid from the 6th of every month. The grant payment for April was brought forward to the 30 March 2020 and the first two days were dedicated to people with disabilities and older persons to ensure compliance with the State of Disaster requirements. Impatient child support grant beneficiaries could not wait for the 1st of April and descended upon payment channels as early as 30 March. This posed all sorts of health challenges and it became
difficult at some stores and ATM's to maintain social distancing. There was also a nasty scene in a Dobsonville shopping centre in Soweto where a group of youngsters were captured on video pushing older people in order to access payment infrastructure first. In response to this unpleasant experience, SASSA started consulting role players such as National Treasury, South African Post Office, the banking association, retailers, and the consumer goods council among others. What came out of the consultations is that people with disabilities and the aged need to be protected from the month end rush at payment outlets and therefore payment needs to be staggered in such a way that these categories of beneficiaries receive their grants
before others. To effect this SASSA will make use of two payment files. The first one will cover the aged and the disabled while the second payment file will cover all other grant types. Some older persons use one card to also receive child support and foster child grants. In such cases they will be able to access all linked grants from the 4th of every month. Once the money is in the account, it will remain there until it is needed. “Money deposited into your account is safe and will not be taken back if not used. There is no need to rush to withdraw cash on the first day we deposit it into your account. The SASSA card can be used as a debit card to pay for purchases, therefore it is not necessary to withdraw cash and thereafter purchase goods with the cash”; Busisiwe Memela SASSA CEO pleaded with beneficiaries. Issued by Government Communications (GCIS) on behalf of South African Social Security Agency (SASSA)
Government bans sale of hot cooked food New amendments to the lockdown regulations now ban the purchase and sale of cooked hot food. The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma published the amended regulations on Monday. The new regulation stipulates that any food - "excluded cooked hot food" - may be sold during the national state of disaster due to Covid19. Many retailers have been selling hot prepared food - including rotisserie chickens, pies as well as bread baked
in-store - during lockdown Minister of Trade and Industry Ebrahim Patel allegedly said that government's position on selling hot prepared food was always “very clear”, and that retailers were not supposed to have hot food sections since the start of the national lockdown. While the state announced some easing in new lockdown regulations last week - hardware stores have been partially reopened for plumbers and electricians, for example there has been no relaxation in food sales.

Covid-19 is the most unprecedented and ravaging crisis afflicting humankind, in the last one hundred years. Anxiety and fear are palpably engulfing the world. Concerted efforts are being promulgated by governments to mitigate the health, social, political, and economic effects of the virus. In the midst of this an ominous scenario is emerging. This is aptly depicted in Chinua Achebes novel THINGS FALL APART. “Turning and turning in the widening gyre the falcon cannot hear the falconer, the centre cannot hold, mere anarchy is loosed upon the world.” While governments have one eye on the virus, the other is on possible threats to democracy and capitalism. Any wonder, then, why governments are trying desperately to mitigate the effects of the virus, one of which is to placate and pacify the masses, with , for example, various financial packages and incentives, to ameliorate social suffering, with worthy and noble intention. America, for example, has pledged a staggering 2,3 trillion usd to mitigate the economic effects of the virus to Americans. The world bank and IMF have extended an economic lifeline to developing countries. Surely the virus,in itself, is not solely responsible for this paradigm shift. We should be questioning whether
these attempts are enough to stave of social unrest, anarchy and a possible new world order. Finally, healthcare professionals and frontline workers must be commended for their dedication, commitment and altruistic service. Ravin Maraj - Kwadukuza

BEYOND THE TOUCHLINE Jayce Singh is a former sports administrator and Patron of the KZNCU
The lockdown is in full force. The Olympic Games has been postponed to 2021 and now Wimbledon and the British Grand Prix has being cancelled. All major events in the soccer and cricket world will either be delayed or abandoned. That's bad news for clubs like Liverpool which is chasing its first League title in 30 years. Players will have to take cut
back in wages as no fixtures are being played while cricketers can lose their contracts if normality does not resume in the near future. So the scene in the sporting world is bleak but it's not a time to lose hope. If all of us can pay heed to the enforced restrictions, we shall overcome CD19. An appeal is made to all sports lovers, therefore, to stay at home as it is not business as usual. In keeping with the theme of recalling the past, this column focuses on two football matches played in the 60s by the Lower Tugela Soccer Federation (LTSF)
which had just changed its constitution by challenging the laws of the country to admit players of all races into the association. The first match was in 1960 in the Daniels Gold Cup (played between the champions of Southern and Northern Natal) in Stanger against Maritzburg District FA. LTSF won the right to meet them after defeating North Coast FA in the final to win the Mistry Cup (Southern Natal champions). Maritzburg had such renowned players as Thiti Rampath (captain of Natal), Teddy Jamaloodeen, Sam
Pillay and Nukka Moon. LTSF was represented by a non-racial team with 6 players from Sappi Home Stars comprising amongst others Barnabas Mthembu, Paul Mbata and L. Zondo. The team was captained by Roop Dwarika, together with stalwarts Bala Aiyer and Jugoo Govender (sadly, all late) and M. Gengan. Against their experienced opponents, the young and talented home side took the game to them and scored in the first 5 minutes through Mthembu. Minutes before half-time Paul Mbata made it 2-0, The visitors got one back but

Zondo and Gengan made the game safe for LTSF to run out convincing winners 4-1. It was the first major trophy won by the newly-formed Federation and a big feather in the cap for its players and supporters. After the highs of 1960, who would have expected the Federation to repeat the successes of the previous year. It is said that lightning does not strike twice in the same place but, in the case of LTSF, it did. In 1961 we retained the Mistry Cup by defeating North Coast again at home 3-1 to enable them to meet Newcastle and District FA, champions of Northern Natal, for the Daniels Gold Cup. This time it was a match away from home to far away Newcastle. The team and supporters had to leave by midday on Saturday by bus and taxis. According to the Golden Jubilee Brochure, the trip to Newcastle would l o n g b e remembered by those who travelled by bus (packed to capacity) and every available taxi (not mini bus). It took hours to reach the destination. In the words of the Late Botu Kisten they travelled almost the whole night, sleeping very little, and arriving exhausted. They were welcomed by the Mayor of Newcastle who reminded them that no team had come to the "Lion's Den" and returned victorious. Our President, Late EC Mahomedy, in his reply stated that his team were worthy Southern Natal champions and that they would display a brand of football that Newcastle had never seen, irrespective of the result. How prophetic were the words were to be. To make matters w o r s e , t h e stadium's surface was in a poor condition - hard, bumpy and uneven.
In comparison, our Recreation Ground was like Wembley! The Newcastle team boasted players of the calibre of the Mohan brothers (Balraj and Dharam - reputed to be the finest player produced in SA) and Arjun "AK" Singh. In a ding- dong battle the score stood at 2-2 as the match neared its end. Then, in the words of the Late Sunny Doorsamy, former President of the LTSF after Mr Mahomedy, M. Gengan scored a most miraculous goal. Faced by the tall Balraj Mohan, he stabbed the ball over the head of the defender, ran around him and then unleashed a right-footed volley that sped past the startled keeper. It was as good a goal one would see in the highest echelons of international football. We were victorious by 3 goals to 2 and had signed the beards of the Lions of the North. On their return to Stanger, the team was feted by the community of Stanger. Their supporters could not stop singing the praises of their heroes. Mention has to be made of these men. Six members of the 1960 team had to be replaced as their Club was forced to withdraw from the LTSF. Once again Jugoo Govender, Roop Dwarika, Bala Aiyer (Capt) and Narainsamy Reddy formed the defence; Botu Kisten, SV "Sammy Naidoo, Buick Nene, TaTa Jacob, M.Gengan, Johnny Ramen and Tich Murugan (only 19 yrs old). The names of these players will forever be etched in maroon and gold in the annals of football in this region. More than half this team ( the first 6 aforementioned) was selected to represent Southern Natal in the Sam China Cup Tournament in Johannesburg with EC Mahomedy as Assistant Manager. This was the golden era of football in Stanger as many players were drawn to Professional football that had been introduced in 1961. Govender, Reddy and Johnny Moodley joined Maritzburg City that beat the formidable Aces United in the 1962 Cup Final, while Kisten and Aiyer were signed on by Coastals. (With acknowledgement to the Golden Jubilee Brochure of the LTSF - 1989). Until the next time, enjoy recalling past events until the return of live sports.
