ANC ponders on issues faced by region By Xpress Reporter
I
n attempts to eradicate issues affecting the region of KwaDukuza, the ANC leadership in the General Gizenga Mpanza region held a media briefing on Monday morning to shed light on particular issues. At a Regional Election Strategy Workshop which was held at the Hampshire Hotel in Ballito this past Sunday (20 August 2018), as part of the party's preparations into the 2019 General Election, the ANC called upon all members of the organisation to show unity and a high level of discipline to ensure the party attains the 75% that was placed as its target. Speaking to the media, regional secretary, Cde Musa Zondi articulated that the party is working tirelessly to uplift the lives of South Africans, especially those on the
ground levels. “Our priority is to honour the social contract we have with people by delivering services; this is in line with our mission of uplifting the life of every South African. All councillors of the ANC will convene public meetings to reconnect with the people as the part of Thuma Mina Campaign. All ANC-led municipalities are expected to ensure that by December 2018, all pending service delivery matters have been addressed, starting with the lowhanging fruits. As the ANC we are very serious with rendering our core services at the level of governance; to this we must quickly add that we openly support efforts by our people to report incidents of maladministration and criminal activities to relevant law enforcement agencies. The
contract we have as ANC with the people is service delivery therefore; we have no excuses not to provide such services to our target communities. Our people owe us nothing, as a matter of fact, it is the ANC a people's liberation movement - which owes them. We are also extending an invitation to all former ANC councillors and deployees who previously and currently occupy strategic positions to come on board during this electoral drive,” said Zondi Zondi seized the opportunity to weigh in on the alleged delinquency of KwaSizabantu Mission. According to the ANC in the region, KwaSizabantu Mission has allegedly exploited black people. “It is disappointing to learn of allegations of racism in an

institution that was established with a mission to bring different people together with an aim of spiritual wellness, restoration of hope, as well as education. Following a number of complaints regarding the goings-on at KwaSizabantu Mission which is located in Maphumulo, as a leader of society we have then took up the

matter with a view of uncovering the root course of problems in this community. We are disheartened to report, however, as the ANC we feel that legitimate and genuine issues raised regarding this mission have not yet been resolved despite our attempt to find an amicable solution. It is unfortunate that owing to the denialism of the management of this centre which sustains itself by an exploitative modus operandi, which whilst promising people heaven it neglects their historical realities, which to this day affect ordinary people in particular those of African descent. Let us make one example; Mr. Stagen, the owner of Sizabantu, like all Eurocentric institutions in this country had the audacity to donate millions of litres of water to the then droughtstricken province of Western Cape, Continued on Page 5

Press plays a central role to safeguarding this infrastructure and also encouraged the youth to participate in sport as it is an alternative employment space that is not yet exploited. “I would like to tread on Mayor Ricardo Mthembu's words that sport is one area that will assist us to mould our youth outside of the life highly embroiled with substance and drug abuse. We must therefore not be rhetorical in our support to assist young men and women who have chosen a healthy life that will see them become professionals in their own right as well as be able to provide for their families, because professional sportsmen get paid,” added Phahla. KwaDukuza Municipality is based on the premise that sport plays a vital role in bringing communities together as well as acts as a critical catalyst to reducing crime and anti-social behaviour.

ANC targets 75% in 2019 elections Continued from Page 1 this he did by embarking on an escapade which saw him driving hundreds of kilometres with him behind the wheel. The Public Relations stunt aside; what happened to his holier-thanthou rhetoric of valuing human life? We have no issue with the people of Western Cape, but as a matter of
principle, how do you neglect people on your backyard from whom you extract the surplus value and opt for lands afar? His conduct is fraught with inconsistency. “As the ANC we are not going to rest on achievements until Erlo Stagen and his cohorts unlearn their old ways of dehumanizing poor black people. In time left with
limited choices we shall make known the next step which does not exclude a massive protest,” expressed Zondi. The ANC leadership in the region concluded the briefing by saluting the positive influence of women in society. “This month, we join millions of South Africans in celebrating our mothers, wives, daughters and sisters.
We salute the bravery of the women of 1956 who on the 9th of August decided that enough was enough with the evil segregationist laws which excluded them from making a meaningful contribution in the land of theirs. In this regard, on another hand as the ANC in this General Gizenga Mpanza Region we are very pleased with the progress being made on the

front of fighting genderbased violence and addressing gender parity in various spheres of life. True to our character as the ANC, we commit to creating an enabling environment wherein all talents can be nurtured and thrive. A Happy Women's Month to you all Imbokodo of General Gizenga Mpanza Region,” concluded Regional Secretary, Musa Zondi.

Police nabbed a gang of robbers who allegedly held up a private security company at their workplace in Maurice Perry Road in KwaDukuza and took 13 firearms, four cellphones and fled in their company vehicle. The incident took place on 15 August 2018 around 20:30. On Thursday, Maphumulo police received a complaint of a shooting at Maqumbi area and their rapid response led to the arrest of the suspects and recovery of the firearms. SAPS spokesperson in KwaZulu Natal, Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane stated that one suspect
was killed during the shootout. “Police were following up on a robbery incident that had occurred last night in the KwaDukuza policing precinct. It is alleged that on 15 August 2018 at 20:30, three unknown males accosted security guards at their workplace in Maurice Perry Road, tied them up and robbed them of 13 pistols, four cellphones and fled in their company vehicle. A case of robbery was opened at KwaDukuza police station for investigation. “Whilst attending to the shooting complaint, Maphumulo police were joined by ILembe
Cluster members and the suspects driving the stolen Tata vehicle were spotted in the Maphumulo policing precinct. When the suspects saw the police, there was an exchange of gunfire which resulted in the death of one suspect, the arrest of three suspects and the recovery of eight firearms. None of the police officers were injured and more arrests are imminent. The suspects will appear in the KwaDukuza Magistrates Court soon. They will be charged for attempted murder, illegal possession of firearms, possession of stolen property and robbery,” said Zwane.

BEYOND THE TOUCHLINE A week in sports is a short time. In my last column I wrote about the vagaries of the weather in the UK. In the third test between England and India that began on Saturday the hot and dry summer conditions returned to Nottingham and India's batsmen flourished. Virat Kohli (97) and Ajinka Rahane (81) in a partnership of 159 for the 4th wicket led from the front ably assisted by openers, Shekhar Dhawan and KL Rahul, and young debutant wicket-keeper, Rishab Pant. They got India to a respectable 329 after overcoming the initial onslaught by the English seamers. When England went in, the weather became overcast and their batting was dismantled by Hardik Pandaya (5-28) with assistance from Jasprit Bumrah (237) and Ishant Sharma (2-32) with controlled seam and swing bowling. Only Jos Butler with a hard-hitting 39 got to terms with the conditions after England collapsed to 128 - 9 to be eventually all out for 161. Pant took 5 catches behind the wicket with Rahul taking 3 in the slip cordon. With a lead of 168 runs India scored 124-2 at the end of the second day to give them an overall lead of 292 with three days left. At the time of going to press, India holds a distinct advantage and in a very good position to reduce the series to 2-1. England will have to bat with better application and conviction to chase down the target which should be around 400 in
their second innings. Nothing is impossible in this game! On the soccer front, some of the top teams in the EPL and PSL have made faltering starts at this stage of the long season. Manchester United were well-beaten by unfashionable Brighton and Hove Albion and Arsenal by Chelsea in the London derby in a closelycontested game. In the PSL, the big guns Orlando Pirates and Kaiser Chiefs, have been slow off the blocks with Chiefs obtaining 3 draws thus far. Sundowns was away on CAF Championships duty and Bidvest Wits and Bloemfontein Celtic jointly top the log with 9 points each. Leagues in other parts of Europe have also kicked-off with Paul Pogba determined to go across to Barcelona to join Lionel Messi. Meanwhile Christiano Ronaldo made his debut for Juventus in the Serie A in Italy. Things are just beginning to warm up as the weather begins to turn cold in Europe. It is hoped that the World Cup heroes will shine for their respective clubs in the domestic leagues. In the Rugby Championship campaign South Africa beat Argentina 34- 21 after being behind at half-time. This propensity of the Springboks to make a slow start will be to their detriment against opponents like New Zealand and Australia. Although scoring 6 tries, it was a scrappy win against the Pumas who gave as much as they got. Cohesion and team work were missing The Editor cannot be held responsible for any information in the Letters to the Editor column. This column is intended

Patron of the KZNCU The return game against Argentina will be this Saturday. In the other match the All Backs just go marching on, beating the Wallabies 38-13 in Sydney. The last word. Celebrations of milestones in the sporting world is a common occurrence. Recently, Manor Cricket Club, an affiliate of the ILembe CU, celebrated its 20th Anniversary. Formed in 1998 under the auspices of the KwaDukuza Cricket Union, it has had a meteoric rise to dominate cricket in this area for the last decade. One of its products, Saidi Mhlongo, represented the KZN Dolphins. Led by the charismatic, NR Singh who has been President since inception, the club amalgamated with Commercials CC for a while and as Commercials-Manor won the Challenge League K.O. competition at Kingsmead. It was a proud day for KwaDukuza cricket as the coach of this team was Yunus Moorad, the former NCB wicketkeeper-batsman for over a decade. It was unfortunate that former presidents of the Union under whom Manor CC played were not invited as guests to this prestigious function. It is hoped that when the ILembe Cricket Union celebrates its 75th Anniversary in 2019, it will have the magnanimity to invite former stalwarts of the forerunners to the present Union !

Disappointed
Last Saturday at around midday, I was attacked by three shameless young black thugs as I was entering Jet Stores, the one near Edgars, to buy a few items. A few metres from the store's front, one guy held me with an iron grip, almost choking me and the other two searched my pockets, demanding money. I pleaded with the Jet Stores guard to help as he was just two metres away from us. He just watched. I expected him to shout at the thugs to stop or to even press the store's panic button to frighten off the attackers. He did nothing to help a customer about to enter his store. I know its company policy for the guard not to interfere, but he could at least press the panic button, as a seventy five year old is being mugged/attacked. They ran off with my cellphone and fifty Rand. I underwent heart surgery a few years ago. Dozens of onlookers witnessed the whole incident. I left the scene with a very painful neck and throat that was attended to by doctors. Stangerite

Stanger Heights Volleyball Club under the guidance of never-saydie attitude of coach Neren 'Bob' Reddy and assisted by the dynamic Sandhir 'Tin Boy' Jugmohan came from behind to stun log leaders TVGB in the league game played last Thursday at the association courts at Stanger High. Heights, made of scholars not only brought the high riding favourites for league honours, they also brought an end to their winning streak. TVGB had won the Xpress Times Easter tournament and the mid-season tournament and where undefeated in the league. Praise must go to Bob and Tin Boy for instilling in these lads the attitude of playing in a big match and not being intimidated. The game was evenly poised
with TVGB showing their experience to clinch the first set. The second set was a rude awakening as Heights VC shell shocked their more experienced opponents who had no answers. Man of the match Dillon John was in devastating form, with towering blocks, powerful jump serves and thunderous attacks which TVGB had no answer for. Yeshodan Pillay provided excellent support with pin point setting. Neren Bob Reddy looked like he never left the courts with thunderous attacking and his never say die attitude. Andrishan Gopaul showed his metal with huge blocks at a crucial point in the 3rd set. The other two Gopaul brothers along with Captain Kevin Sooriah played a crucial role and covered the court,
keeping TVGB frustrated. Heights VC predominantly made up of players that are playing for the first time showed that they have BMT (big match temperament) and are a team on the rise. TVGB defeat has thrown the league wide open with title aspirants and reigning champions, Darnall United all smiles after winning their double header. Darnall won their first game 2-0 against Manor Old Boys without breaking a sweat. However the sweat broke in the second game after they went down to Sunbrook 26-25. After the break and few words from manager Sam Moonsamy, Darnall gained momentum and team spirit, thumping Sunbrook 25-10 in the 2nd set. Darnall took a early lead in the final set (8-4) and never turned back winning 15-10. Coach of Darnall, Samuel Moonsamy believes the league is back in their sights
