waDukuza Municipality Deputy Mayor Cllr Dolly Govender together with ILembe District Municipality Mayor Sduduzo Gumede, religious leaders, medical rescue units and members of the community held a road safety prayer last Thursday. The prayer was held on the notorious R74, which has claimed more than four lives this year alone. The main purpose of the prayer was to enlighten the public and work to find an urgent solution to curb the number of road accidents that occur on the R74, famously known as the Manor Highway. Negligence, fatigue and alcohol abuse were the talking points during the prayer, with KwaDukuza Municipality Deputy

Mayor Cllr Dolly Govender urging Law Enforcement to tighten the screws on those who are found disobeying the rules of the road. “Today we mourn the loss of our fellow citizens who lost their lives on this road. We sympathise with grieving families, as a caring government we intervene when there is crisis, currently we have engaged with relevant stakeholders to assist curb the high rate of road accidents. We are positive that today's prayer will yield positive results,” said Govender. She added that government alone cannot efficiently combat this scourge - the community and religious leaders have a major role to play to curb tragedies on the road. “Reckless drivers must be held accountable and we plead with

iLembe schools functionality monitored

Members of the KwaZuluNatal Legislature accompanied by members of the iLembe District Department of Education and the iLembe Family of Municipalities councillors last week visited iLembe District schools as part of the annual Schools Functionality Monitoring Programme. The programme is in fulfilment of the Constitutional mandate to perform oversight and is undertaken at the beginning of every school year where members of the KZN Legislature including Members of the Executive Council (MEC's) conduct visits to schools in the 11 districts in the province. The purpose of the programme is to assess state of readiness for the 2019 academic year with the focus of the assessment being on effective teaching and learning processes, availability of key resources,

labour, traditional leadership and political leadership from municipalities. T h e 2 0 1 9 programme took place from 15 to 17 January with visits being conducted in Ezithabeni High S c h o o l (Maphumulo), Stanger Manor P r i m a r y (KwaDukuza), Stanger Manor High S c h o o l (KwaDukuza), M b u y i s e l o Secondary School ( M a n d e n i ) , Somshoko Secondary (Mandeni) and the Stanger Training C o l l e g e LEADERS: District Champion MEC for iLembe District Municipality and the MEC for Education Mr. (KwaDukuza). demonstration themed “One life is one too many” on 18 January 2019. The main purpose of this placard demonstration was to voice their dissatisfaction over the high rate of fatalities

on the infamous R74. This demonstration came after the accident that claimed five lives on 01 January 2019. Leading at the forefront, Chairperson of the branch, Fameeda Hoosen said that

the ANC branch in ward 17 adheres to the call by KwaDukuza Deputy Mayor Cllr Dolly Govender for community members to help restrain the number of fatalities that occur on this

notorious road. “This is one of the placard demonstrations we will have throughout the year or until we see positive results. Innocent lives have been lost and it's time to put this curse

to bed,” said Hoosen. She also urged the KwaDukuza community and surrounding areas to register to vote on the final voting registration weekend - 26 and 27 January 2019.

Seven lives lost in N2 collision WRECKAGE: Car collision on the N2 claimed 7 lives

Seven people lost their lives on Saturday 19 January 2019 when two light motor vehicles

collided on the N2 near Tugela Bridge. According to Paul Herbst of IPSS Medical Rescue, A high impact head-on collision between two light

motor vehicles claimed the lives of four males and three females. “It's alleged that the driver of the Toyota Etios lost control of

his vehicle colliding head-on with a Toyota Hilux. The severity and degree of impact was such that persons sustained traumatic, lethal injuries,” said Herbst “The roadway was obstructed for a period of time while emergency teams worked on the s c e n e , ” concluded Herbst. Law enforcement officials pleaded with road users not to exceed the speed limit in order to minimize the number of fatalities on the road.

on March 15. Jehovah Shalom Baptist in Glenhills will host variety youth concert on May 24 giving all churches an opportunity to showcase their talent through song, dance and drama. The highlight on the 2019 calendar is the Family Sports Day which is scheduled for June 15 at the Stanger Manor Primary School Ground. Darnall Baptist Church who joined forces with Glenhills Revival Centre (GRC) to host an exciting youth programme last year will host a variety concert on July 26.

A similar concert is being planned for August 23 to give churches in the greater Durban region to attend at the Risecliff Baptist Church in Chatsworth. Stanger Baptist Church youth will bring down the curtains in 2019 at their concert on September 20. Abraham said: “The programme for the youth is not restricted to Basa churches and urged all churches in KwaDukuza, Tugela, Darnall, Shakaskraal and surrounding areas to come together on Saturday in what promises to be an empowering youth conference”.

India created history for touring teams when they drew the T20, won the Test series and the ODIs and left the shores Down Under with the adulation of the cricketing world ringing in their ears. Their next assignment is against New Zealand and begins on Wednesday with the first ODI. In the 2nd and 3rd ODI last week, they overcame the Aussies by 6 and 7 wickets respectively. Their star was veteran MS Dhoni who was declared Man of the Series for three outstanding innings of over 50 with a highest score of 87 not out. The only criticism that I have is that they took both the matches to the last over when they could have won with a few overs to spare. Imagine if the set batsmen were dismissed in the penultimate over, then the incoming batsmen would find it much more

difficult to reach the target. Also, it gives the fielding side more impetus to defend its lead. The psychological "warfare" is just as important as the battle between bat and ball. Fortunately for India, they had at the crease the experienced Dhoni, former captain and World Cup winner, who was able to guide the team to emphatic victories. He will be a vital cog in the Indian machine for the 2019 World Cup in England commencing at the end of May, keeping out the exciting youngster, Rishab Pant as wicketkeeper/batsman. Pakistan and SA began their ODI series on Saturday with Pakistan causing an upset by defeating the over-confident Proteas by 5 wickets. Pillay blows East Coast away In a KwaZulu Natal Cricket Union Challenge League 50 over game, local outfit iLembe Cricket Club trounced East Coast by 91 runs this past weekend. iLembe won the toss and decided to bat first in overcast conditions. Openers A. Bageloo and U. Hoosen put on a solid stand of 72 in 10 overs before Hoosen was caught behind of the bowling of R. Seerpath for 29. Bageloo followed in the very next over for 36, bowled by B. Chetty. S. Arora was Seerpath's next victim caught for 5 in the 12th over. In the next over, N. Yousaf was bowled by Chetty for 12. After iLembe's swift start to their innings, East Coast's bowlers started to use the pitch conditions to their advantage. After Chetty claimed the scalps of S. Chetty for 4 and skipper Z. Ali for 0 with the total on 103/6 in the 15th over, iLembe where stirring down the barrel. S. Logenathan and veteran B. Ismail put on 26 runs for the 7th wicket before Ismail was adjudged lbw for 6 in the 25th over. Logenathan was finding the conditions tough wearing a few body blows but together

with R. Mhlongo, they took the total to 150/7 in the 29th over before Mhlongo was brilliantly run out by K. Govender for 6. Aaron Pillay and S. Sadayan were the last wickets to fall as iLembe were bowled out for 181 after 33.3 overs. Logenathan was left unbeaten for a resilient 53*(4 fours). The best East Coast bowlers were B. Chetty (5/31 in 7), K. Thulsirama (2/8 in 5.3) and R. Seerpath (2/42 in 10 overs) With a below par total to defend, iLembe's bowlers had to bring out the big guns and they did just that. East Coast was blown away for 90 after 21.3 overs. Aaron Pillay was in the attack mode as he claimed career best figures of 8/38 in 9.3 overs. K. Naidoo 27, S. Rajakumar 0, B. Muzite 0, K. Govender 2, E. Moodley 35, De Coning 0, R. Seerpath 0 and B. Chetty 5, all succumbed to the venom of Aaron Pillay. S. Sadayan also claimed 2 scalps as East Coast had no answers to this deadly duo.
