Parents fear for children's safety at notorious local school By Xpress Reporter
T
h e beleaguered Glenhills Secondary School is making the headlines again….for all the wrong reasons. This time around a female learner has allegedly been gang raped on the school premises, following a reported drinking binge by a group of unruly learners. KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala confirmed that police had received a report about a gang rape incident at the school, a n d t h a t a n investigation was underway, but no arrests had been made at the time of going to press yesterday (Tuesday) and apparently no case had been formally laid. The strange thing was

Alcohol consumption throws Glenhills Secondary into turmoil Continued from page 1 that when our journalists arrived at the school yesterday (Tuesday), a gentleman who claimed to be a member of the School Governing Body (SGB) barred them from entering the school, while a journalist from another local paper was already inside the school. The gentleman said this journalist had “breached school protocol” and had already been “kicked out”. However our reporters sighted the said journalist openly strolling inside the school grounds, with no attempt being made to evict him. This gentleman further told our reporters that the school could not give any comment, and when attempting to explain the heavy police presence at the school, he said the police were attending to an accident that had taken place earlier. However more police arrived and entered the school to monitor the situation, and our “SGB friend” decided to run away after being exposed for being a liar. When the school security went inside the administration block to inquire if Xpress Times should also be allowed in as another reporter was already inside the school, the answer was a most definitive NO! However the incident has
been taken to hospital where she was allegedly examined and it was found that she had not been “sexually violated”. The source further accused the school of “cooking up” the rape allegations, and said the school had been alerted twice about a group of learners who were observed by residents as they apparently “consumed large quantities of liquor” inside the school grounds, and no attempt had been made by the
Police kept a watchful eye at the troubled Glenhills Secondary School
again rattled the parents, with many expressing utter shock and disgust at the manner in which the school is being managed. An enraged community member, writing on a social network platform, said, “After all that's been happening in our schools, it makes no sense that (four) individuals would do something like this in their right minds. These kids must have been high on something or there's more to this. If it's drugs involved, we the community is to blame for allowing these drug lords to operate freely. (It's) time to stand up and put an end to this. Our children are at risk each every day of their lives.” And yet another community member made an even more startling claim when the said, “I drove past the school
yesterday around 13:40 as I passed the school's bottom gate I saw (three) couples cuddling openly, all in different parts of the (school) ground. From the roadside it was an eye sore. They were not bothered at all about who is watching. Being an ex pupil of that school it's really shocking that all this is happening. When I matriculated in 2012, that school was one of the best in Stanger for their discipline and education standards”. Also at the same school from hell, a scuffle reportedly broke out just outside the school gate yesterday (Tuesday) morning, and a learner was allegedly stabbed and another thrown in front of an oncoming car. A source close to the family of the alleged victim told the Xpress Times that the girl had
school to stop the learners from consuming liquor. Sources also revealed that all the learners that were involved in the “binge drinking” incident had apparently been suspended from school, while this matter is being dealt with. The spokesperson for the Department of Education, Muzi Mahlambi, could not be reached at the time of going to press.

Community to benefit from R2.5 million fund By Xpress Reporter
KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) and Group Five Construction Ltd will preside over the Avon Peaking Power Plant Community Fund to the value of R2.5 million. This will be utilized for training and skills development programmes to respond to the needs of the construction industry and for the benefit of local institutions that serve KwaDukuza communities. An amount of R1.5 million will be allocated to the Mayor to be used to benefit institutions whose work impacts directly on the lives of local communities, whilst R1 million will be used for skills development programmes such as welding, boiler making, construction supervision, plastering, engineering and plumbing. KZN MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Sihle Zikalala said that he is pleased to note that one of the focal areas of this Fund would be to

should also provide a springboard for young people to start their own businesses,” said Zikalala. He added that this intervention could not have come at a more opportune time, particularly as “our province and the country at
large continue to grapple with the challenge of power shortage.” KDM Mayor, Councillor Ricardo Mthembu expressed his delight with the fact that the private sector and government are able to unite. “Today we have come to
National Freedom Party (NFP) leader Zanele M a g w a z a - M s i b i disappointed thousands of party faithfuls when she again failed to show up for her party's first major rally since the local government elections, which the party did not contest. The weekend's heavy rainfall did very little to dampen the high spirits of the thousands of NFP supporters who graced the rally, dubbed Sibuyile (We Are Back), which was hosted in KwaDukuza on Saturday. The ailing Magwaza-Msibi was expected-Msibi was expected to deliver the keynote address at the rally, but she once again did not show up. Organized by the party's KwaZulu-Natal provincial leadership, the rally was intended to re-assure the party's supporters that the party was not lost on the country's political landscape, despite its failure to contest the recent elections. According to NFP provincial leader Vikizitha Mlotshwa, a staunch supporter of Zanele Magwaza-Msibi, “We wanted to restore hope amongst our supporters. We needed to reinforce the message that not being part of the recent municipal elections did not signal the end of our party. We are saying we are back, and we urge all our supporters to rally behind the party's leadership as we begin to mobilize ahead of the next elections in 2019”. The NFP was disqualified from contesting the 2016 Local Government Elections
after failing to meet the deadline to pay the participation fee to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). The party has since been plagued by mounting internal strife, with a number of top leaders either being suspended or dismissed amid the on-going investigation into the reason behind the party's failure to pay the election participation fee on time. To make matters worse, the party's President Zanele Magwaza-Msibi has for the past several years been battling failing health, to which well-placed party insiders attributed her failure to attend the KwaDukuza rally at the weekend. NFP ILembe District chairperson Themba Mbatha has offered an explanation for Magwaza-Msibi's absence at the rally, saying that due to inclement weather on the day, the medical team currently looking after Magwaza-
The Redeemers Tabernacle Church, which was run from Glenhills Secondary School, is now closed. Apostle and Prophet, Dixon Moonsamy who runs the Redeemers Ministries International in Richards Bay, allegedly left the congregation in the lurch during mid August this year. According to sources, Apostle Dixon did not even notify the congregation in person. The sad news was delivered by his spokesperson, Mrs Suzy Singh, who also hails from Richards Bay. According to these sources, Apostle Dixon's behaviour and attendance leaves a lot to be desired.

Msibi, strongly recommended against her attendance on grounds that exposure to such unfavourable weather conditions could have further aggravated her medical condition. “We wish to apologize to all our supporters and members. She definitely was going to be present, but then nobody could have foreseen what the weather would be like. However the turnout was very encouraging and we are confident that going forward to the elections in 2019, the NFP will exponentially increase its support base,”

It is also about creating an environment that will make it possible for business to continue to do business in the future as there will be skills that are required by the economy to perform even better,” said Mthembu. He further stated that the partnership forged with the private sector confirms the need for the private and public sector to work together to create sustainable local economies. “We wish to convey our appreciation to the leadership of Group Five and Avon Peaking Power Plant and all the stakeholders for listening to our pleas and for honouring

MEC outraged by Shakaskraal shooting By Xpress Reporter
The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Mxolisi Kaunda, has called on the Private Security Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) and the South African Police Service (SAPS) to enforce laws prohibiting security companies from displaying firearms in public. This call by Kaunda follows the shooting of a sixyear-old girl, allegedly by a security guard at the Shakaskraal taxi rank on Monday last week. It has been alleged that when a taxi was about to depart at the taxi rank, a security guard opened fire on a taxi driver. A six-year-old girl and another passenger sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital. Police have confirmed that an investigation is currently underway to establish the circumstances that resulted in the shooting. Kaunda said PSIRA must
enforce measures to proven irregular conduct of some security companies whose behaviour in public areas such as taxi ranks shows tendencies of becoming “a law unto themselves”. “Together with PSIRA and the police we must find ways of holding the recalcitrant security companies and their personnel to account. It is unacceptable that security guards are allowed to parade heavy weapons in public and threaten the lives of the commuters. This has been left unattended for far too long and we must now work out mechanisms to address this issue and enforce the law. People have a right to protect themselves and their properties, but that cannot be at the expense of people's lives,” said Kaunda. Last year the
KZN Department of Transport convened a meeting with security companies contracted in the greater KwaDukuza area following the shooting that resulted in the death of four people in Stanger. Kaunda said security companies must operate within the law and must at all times act in a manner that is promoting and protecting the safety of the commuters.
“Taxi ranks are public areas and no one has a right to hold people at ransom. We are deeply concerned that security companies in taxi ranks have previously been caught in the forefront of violence and killings in the taxi industry. In some cases security guards have been arrested and sentenced for violence in the taxi industry. We call on the taxi industry to also assess the role of
security companies they employ and help clamp down their untoward behaviour,” said Kaunda. Kaunda also reiterated his satisfaction with the sentencing of a taxi o p e r a t o r f r o m KwaMaphumulo (Sipho Zulu) to life imprisonment and an additional 10 years after he was found guilty of killing his colleague (Nelson Cele) in 2012.

Steel shelter donation for Groutville High By Xpress Reporter
The days of “baking in the sun” or “drenching in rainfall” will soon be over for learners at Groutville High School. This follows the announcement of a much needed donation of funding for the construction of a steel shelter to cover the school's entire courtyard (including the main assembly area), by businessman Vivien Reddy's Isibaya Community Trust. The donation follows a request made by the school to Mrs Noma Gigaba, the wife of Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba, who then approached Isibaya
Community Trust for assistance On Friday the Trust visited the school to introduce the project contractor, Muziwethu Construction, who is expected to undertake construction of the structure. The Project Manager for Isibaya Community Trust, Mr Ashwin Ramroop, said this donation was part of the organization's commitment towards education. Also in attendance was Dr D Singh from the Department of Education, as well as Ward 29 Councillor Njabulo Cele. The learners at the recently revamped school expressed
excitement at the prospect of finally getting shelter to keep the “blazing sun” and “torrential rainfall” at bay. Construction of the shelter is expected to get underway shortly.

“Racial slur” angers local businessman By Xpress Reporter
A local businessman is seething with anger after an altercation over transport routes turned into a racial attack. The businessman, who operates a small furniture retail outlet, claims that he and the other small furniture retailers have been targeted by a group of bakkie operators who call themselves “Transport Association”. Apparently the members of this “Transport
Riyas
Association” is not happy with furniture shops using their own delivery vans and trucks to deliver merchandise to customer residences, saying this infringes upon their business territory. Last week the group approached the businessman again and allegedly instructed him to stop using his drivers for deliveries and stock pickups. He claims the group suddenly became abusive

and then one of them allegedly referred to him as an “ikula”, or “coolie”, and tried to discourage passersby from buying from this “coolie”. “One f them said he was the group leader, and when I asked him questions,, he stepped outside the shop and started swearing at me, calling a coolie,” stated the businessman, still seething
with anger. His next door shopkeeper, who also deals in furniture and appliances, corroborated the claims, saying the group often calls on the smaller shops to harass their owners over furniture deliveries. “My business is suffering as a result of this behaviour. I have my own delivery bakkie, and I do not always charge my customers for
delivering their goods. If I can see that the customer really has no money for delivery, then I sometimes help them out for free, especial if they are regular customers. Now these guys want us to stop doing that. Our customers are also suffering. Business has slowed down,” the businessman told our reporters.
The businessman said he had reported the matter to the local police, and was still waiting for police to respond. He claims that at one time when the group again came to threaten them, they said if the shopkeepers do not stop delivering goods for their customers, then they (the group) would bring in the entire local taxi association to “deal with us”.
Businessman imports camel for Eid
Local businessman, Mr Y Desai has set the precedent in KwaDukuza for camel sacrifice during this auspicious occasion. According to Desai, importing the camel from Southwest Africa was a complex task. “This was a difficult project that took a great deal of work. I would like to thank the SPCA for ensuring that all legalities were in order,” he said. Desai said that he hopes the Muslim community will follow in his footsteps and make camel sacrificing a norm. “Hopefully I have paved the way for people to bring in camels during Eid ul Adha.”

God chooses the best they say and certainly got the best that day. You were gone before we realised it and only God knows why. The saddest part of all this, we never said goodbye...Our hearts still ache with sadness, for we loved you very much. You gave us love in the fullest measure and today that is our dearest treasure. The emptiness that you have left cannot be filled. How much we miss you, will never be known. All your life you did your very best for your family, you always put others first before you put yourself. We will always love, cherish and remember you with fondness and gratitude. WE LOVE YOU DAD. Sadly missed by your loving wife Saras, children Vernon, Vinocia and Vinolen, daughter-in-laws Renusha and Sumeshinee, son-in-law Roland, grand children Kaesha, Kaeuren, Mayustri, Savastri, Raeushan and a host of family and friends.

Cool Leaders crowned SPI champs Cool Leaders were crowned the 2016 Sunil Pranpath Incorporated corporate league champions after defeating the formidable Glenhills outfit 2-1 after coming from behind in the finals of the knockout tournament hosted by the K w a D u k u z a Vo l l e y b a l l Association at the association courts last Wednesday. As usual Cool Leaders got off to their diesel engine start getting slow off the blocks which allowed Glenhills to dictate the pace of the game finding the bare spots in the Cool Leader's courts. Cool Leaders slowly clawed their way back into the game but their fightback was too late in the
game and allowed Glenhills to take the first set 25-23. The fightback from Cool Leaders gave the players some momentum in the second set as they set the courts alight with some breath taking volleyball. Cool Leaders never looked back as they easily marched to win the set 25-19 to level the set scores 11 and force the game into the third and decisive set. Cool Leaders continued where they left off and completely dominated the final set winning 15-10 and being crowned the 2016 SPI corporate champions. Revy Harrypersad thanked Sunil Pranpath from SPI Incorporated for his generous
sponsorship and his continued association with KDVA. After the presentation, a carnival atmosphere ensued at the courts as fires were lit and players enjoyed their sumptuous braai. In other volleyball news, there will be no domestic volleyball fixtures this week allowing the players to make their way to witness the Volleyball South Africa Club Championships that will take place Durban. Three local clubs, KSST, Randsons and Grove End will be participating at the tournament and local players are urged to make the trip to Durban to support the local heroes.
