Darnall pothole project

Glenhills residents protest over poor service delivery

GLENHILLS: On 17 December 2020 a number of Glenhills residents took to the street to protest over poor service delivery.

On 17 December 2020 a number of disgruntled Glenhills residents took the street and barricaded a number of roads with rocks and burning tyres, to raise their concerns about the

incomplete Rocky Park Housing project as well potholes in the area. The residents were frustrated as they had nobody to complain to for service delivery related matters.

KwaDukuza SAPS communications officers, Priya Nunkumar confirmed the protest, “I can confirm that a protest took place, and the protest was dispersed by local authorities'.

DARNALL: A group of Darnall locals got together on the weekend to fill the huge pot holes from the Darnall robots and along the P403. According to the locals it was very long overdue and these holes were huge.

ILembe Council held its last meeting for the year on 11 December 2020 at the iLembe Auditorium where festive/summer contingency plans were presented. As a water service provider, iLembe faces a lot of challenges due to protracted power failures resulting to ultimately water shortages. That, coupled with the influx of holidaymakers and extra demand on an already compromised supply contribute towards a constrained system. At the council meeting, Technical Services Acting Senior Manager Cingisa Mbola presented the summer season contingency plan stating that additional demand on services results in high water usage which contributes to high volumes into the sewerage system, “A clear leave plan for operations and maintenance team members in in place outlining who will be available for duty and following the submission of leave applications in all sections, we confirm that plumbing teams will be balanced and the shift system will continue as normal”, she said. According to Mbola, both Operations and Maintenance Managers, area managers and superintendents will be on duty for the rest of December and January 2020. Adding that both shifts will also have a superintendent on standby. Sewer trucks, water tankers and pumps · Sewer trucks will be operating as normal to ensure desludging is done to avoid spillages · Water tankers continue following daily delivery schedules where water is provided via water tankers · To get your ward's schedule, please contact the ward committee

· Standby pumps have been ordered to ensure that there are pumps ready to be plugged in should there be pump failures. To report a theft, leak or for water and sanitation related queries please contact our 24hr call centre on 032 437 9427 or send a WhatsApp message to 074 344 4508. In KwaDukuza ONLY, residents can contact the Area Manager; Vim Pillay on 083 307 2270. In other local municipalities, residents are urged to contact their respective ward committee. Disaster Manager Sifiso Ngubane revealed that severe thunderstorms (associated with lightning, strong winds, hail, heavy rain), extremely hot temperatures and storm surges are just some of the hazards that have been identified as priority summer season hazards in iLembe District Municipality. “The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is the custodian of weather related warnings, and therefore the plan will be activated upon receiving any notification from SAWS that will pose a threat to the communities of iLembe District”, he said. Upon receiving weather warnings, the District disseminates information to all affected community members so that they take necessary precautionary measures and to exercise risk avoidance behaviour during incidents. “In terms of the Incident Management Protocol, all members of the community need to inform their leaders at a ward level or in their respective village (izigodi), so that the information reaches both the local municipality and iLembe District to initiate required interventions,” said Ngubane.

Lewandowski and Bronze win FIFA player of the year

Robert Lewandowski, FIFA's player of the year

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski was named men's player of the year last Thursday at FIFA's

'The Best' awards ceremony in Zurich. The 32-year-old Lewandowski, top scorer in Europe and winner of the

Champions League with Bayern, came out ahead of the other two nominees, Lionel Messi and Cristiano

CSA confirms 2 Proteas players test positive for Covid-19 ahead of Sri Lanka Tests

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has confirmed that two members of the Proteas team have returned with a positive coronavirus result. These tests, which form part of the CSA Covid-19 protocol for the tour, took place on Wednesday and Thursday ahead of the team's entry into the bio-secure environment for the twomatch Test match against Sri Lanka. CSA stated that the two unnamed players will not enter the bio-secure bubble and will not compete in the Test series. CSA also confirmed that no other players in the currently named squad were deemed close contacts after contact tracing procedures were conducted.

This comes after the postponement of the sixth round of the 4-Day Franchise Series after a rise of Covid19 cases around the country. Earlier last week, the Titans and Dolphins four-day game was cancelled on day two after a player tested positive for the virus. Five Proteas Test squad players were competing in the match. Another five Test squad members played in Bloemfontein as the Knights defeated the Lions. The match also saw a Lion's player testing positive on the third day of the game. There has been concerns over the status of the Sri Lankan Test series given that the Proteas' ODI series against England was called off earlier after a number of

Ronaldo. England defender Lucy Bronze took the women's award, seeing off the challenge of Wendie

Renard and Pernille Harder. It is the first occasion for both Lewandowski and Bronze to win the award, with the Pole only the second player after Luka Modric in 2018 to break a 13-year Messi-Ronaldo hegemony. Lewandowski's stellar performance for allconquering Bayern has already been recognised by EUFA who awarded the Polish striker European player of the year in October. While he has won the Bundesliga in each of his six seasons at Bayern, finishing as the league's top scorer in four of the last four five seasons, his international profile has been hurt in the past by the Poland's mediocre form and his previous failure, at Dortmund and Bayern, to win the champions League. Last season, however, he was spectacular as Bayern won every game in Europe including the Champions League final against Paris StGermain. Lewandowski finished with 15 goals in the competition, five more than the next best striker, Erling

Bronze. 29, who succeeds last year's winner Megan Rapinoe, won the Champions League with Lyon in August before moving back to play for Manchester City. She was a surprise winner ahead of her former team-mate Renard, and striker Harder, who moved from Wolfsburg to Chelsea in early September. France and Lyon's Sarah Bouhaddi capped her fine career with The Best FIFA women's goalkeeper award. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was named men's coach of the year while current Dutch women's national team boss Sarina Wiegman took the women's award for the second time in her career following her 2017 success. The Puskas Award for the best goal went to Tottenham's South Korean striker Son Heung-min for a mazy, individual goal he scored against Burnley in the Premier League in December 2019.

Kai Rooney signing for Manchester Untied

Wayne Rooney said he was a “proud dad” after his eldest son Kai followed in his footsteps by signing for Manchester United. United's record goal scorer, who joined the Red Devils as a teenager from Everton in 2014, posted a picture on social media of the 11-year-

old signing a contract at his former club. “Yeah, I'm a proud dad. He's been working hard, he obviously came over to the (United) States with us to continue with his football,” the interim Derby County boss said. “He went on trial with Manchester United and

he's impressed the coaches. He signed his forms on Friday so I'm delighted for him.” The former England captain had a glittering career at Old Trafford, scoring 253 times in 559 appearances breaking Bobby Charlton's long standing goal record in January 2017. Rooney also played for boyhood club Everton and MLS side DC United, revealed Kai had the choice of several clubs but opted for Manchester United. 'He did have other options, other clubs to go to but he decided to sign for Manchester United, so it was his decision and not mine,” he said.
