There’s sewage on my stoep
TRAIL: A line of smelly water caused by the broken sewer in one of the houses in Indian Village
By Xpress Reporter
Residents of 18 Valley Road in Indian Village are crying foul over false promises by one of iLembe Municipality senior officials who monitored their leaking sewer but never came back to have it fixed. For the past three weeks sewage has been running through houses and having
their yards smelling like a dumping site. Five houses are affected by this sewer and another sewer on the houses nearby in the same street is starting to loosen its grip. A senior official from iLembe Municipality visited the area for monitoring and assured the residents that help is on the way. Days after the ordeal
was monitored, residents placed calls to the municipality call center and got a response that something will be done to rectify the mess immediately, however nothing has since been done. According to iLembe Communications Manager, Ms. Zee Nqala the municipality is aware of the problem.

“Excavation started on 16 February 2017. The sewer pipeline is 2.5 metres below g r o u n d . D u e t o inaccessibility, the municipality had to dig manually. The fault is a result of aging infrastructure and sewer spillage is being disinfected. We would like to take this opportunity to apologize profusely to the affected residents. The
repairs are scheduled to be concluded this week,” said Nqala. In another related matter, concerned residents of 9 Mercury Lane in Glenhills lamented the service they have been receiving from KwaDukuza Municipality for the past three years. In a recent turn of events, two senior citizens in the area had their trees cut and called
the municipality pickup truck to come and remove the remains off the street but for three weeks nothing had been done. The trees however have since been cleared. Furthermore, residents of this area are complaining about the state of their roads which they say is not only unworthy but is behind two car accidents.

New Taxi Rank for Ballito By Xpress Reporter
KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) has acquired land which belonged to Shell South Africa (PTY) LTD through an expropriation process for the development of the new Ballito Taxi Rank. KDM took ownership of this piece of land as of 3 January 2017. The final expropriation notice was gazetted on 29 December 2016 in the KZN Provincial Gazette. In his acceptance speech as the reelected Mayor of KwaDukuza last year in August, Mayor Ricardo Mthembu sent a clear instruction to his Administration, to serve the
owners of this piece of land with a notice of intention to expropriate within a period of 30 days. This was duly done on 29 August 2016. This project formed part of his 100 days commitment to KwaDukuza Municipality. “As KwaDukuza Municipality, we recognise that efficient public transport is the backbone of any thriving economy therefore, we wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to Shell South Africa for not opposing this process and we are at an advanced stage of finalizing ownership. “It must be noted that KwaDukuza Municipality inherited
towns that were not designed for public transport facilities, particularly in Ballito,” said Mthembu. The site was identified in consultation with the Dolphin Coast Taxi Association (DCTA). The municipality has appointed consulting engineers (SMEC) to work on the conceptualisation of the taxi rank, designs, project management and contractor management. A temporary facility will be built in the permanent site whilst the detailed design of the taxi rank is being finalised.

Workshop held for Mandeni Councillors
SERVICE DELIVERY: Mandeni Municipality Mayor, Councillor Sphesihle Zulu addressing Ward Committees and Councillors
Mandeni Municipality hosted an IDP, budget and performance systems capacity building workshop for Ward Committee members and Ward Councillors at Sibusisiwe hall on Thursday, 16 February 2017. Acting Municipal Manager, Sizwe Khuzwayo said the workshop was proposed after the ward committees inauguration. “It is important for ward
committees to know what has been raised in an IDP meeting, it is also important that they work closely with Ward Councillors,” he said. He also said the main aim is to cover critical issues if there is an IDP meeting, adding that they should be able to make input with regard to service delivery. Mandeni Mayor, Councillor Sphesihle Zulu thanked all stakeholders for being present. “You are the
ears and mouth of the society, over and above we need your skills on how we respond in matters of service delivery, it is also vital that we make inputs as people who come from the society. “We have received inputs in some wards, while in other wards they focus more on maintenance issues, we should strive to know as to how Mandeni can be the reliable, people centred and sustainable economic hub,” he said. Zulu lamented that as the council they need Ward Committees and Ward Councillors' triple commitment to deliver the needs of the people. “I am therefore hopeful that you Councillors and Ward Committees and officials will strive to put Mandeni forward, I am also hopeful that you will be the engine of success in Mandeni,” he said. This informative workshop was graced by the presence of Linda Mncube from iLembe District Municipality, Bheka Yaka and Mrs Dudu Mhlongo from Cogta and Mrs Phumzile Luswazi, IDP

Valentine's treat for late ANC Councillor's family By Xpress Reporter
The ANC Greater KwaDukuza Region offices turned to a warm restaurant on a rainy Valentine's Day as members of the youth wing of the ruling party treated children and family members of their former Secretary and ANC councilor, the late Bonga Zungu, to a day of good food and laughs. As part of the day's proceedings, Zungu's three of five children who were present on the day were given a R1000 voucher each to spend at Edgars and hampers wrapped with love. Two other children who were not present on the day received the same gifts through those who
represented them. Regional Chairperson, Mfanafuthi Ngcobo praised Zungu for his contribution to the party structures and to the community at large. “We chose to gather here and celebrate Valentine's Day by showing love to his family who allowed him to spend most of his time with us in the ANC and also because he was a leader who showed love while he was alive. We want to build a connection with his family to also show them that the people he spent his life with still remain his friends to this day.” Furthermore; the ANCYL also announced its plans to complete the house Zungu

was building for his children so that they can also enjoy being under the roof their father wanted them to have. “We would also like to announce to the family that we have plans to complete the house he (Bonga Zungu) passed away before completing. By the end of our term in office we will try to ensure that the house is either complete or nearing its completion phase. This we also do to show that our thoughts are with his family as well,” said Ngcobo. Meanwhile, the youth wig also echoed their intentions of changing the name Blythedale Beach to Bonga Zungu beach. A new business center called 'Across the Bridge' is under construction at Mandeni, Hlomendlini area. The center which is a brain child of local businessman, Sbu Hlatshwayo is showing signs of progress despite initial setback that delayed the construction. Earlier in the year, community members were against the idea citing that they already had plans for the land allocated for the center. There was a tug-of-war between the community members and the businessman until the chief of the area, Professor Ngcobo intervened and resolved the matter. Hlatshwayo confirmed that the issue is now water under the bridge and also aired his
delight about the commencement of the project. “I would firstly like to thank the chief of this area for how he dealt with the matter and I am also happy that my dream will now be a reality,” said Hlatshwayo. The ambitious businessman further commented by saying that the center will help in job creation and giving Hlomendini a much needed facelift as it is an area that was once known for violence and now people can come and see that all that is a thing of the past. Across the Bridge will offer food and beverage courts, a driving school, brick construction site and a car wash.
Strength in numbers Xolani Mtshali alleges he was on his way home at about 9pm. He passed a group of youths who suddenly launched an attack on him and robbed him of his two cellphones. He reported the incident to his uncle who works at SAPS and they tracked down one of the females who was amongst the group. She led them to one of the culprits who was then arrested. Khulekani Maluleka (19) will seek bail this week. All his gang members are still at large.

Varying stories A long-distance taxi conductor alleges that he was attacked by a nurse and stabbed in the head by her. The incident arose over a dispute over money. Andile Mpunda alleges that the woman asked for R200 change which he gave to her. She allegedly approached him at about 5pm that afternoon and an argument ensued. She allegedly stabbed him with a sharp instrument. Rachel Mthembu (57) appeared in court on Monday and was remanded to 10 May. She has an entirely different version as to what transpired. Who is lying? Haibo Thulani Dlamini of Groutville alleges that he was returning home after jogging in the early hours of the morning. As he reached the main gate his uncle was waiting for him and fired a shot in his direction. Fortunately, he was not injured. He alleges that there is an ongoing feud between them. Nhlanhla Sibiya (42) was arrested in connection with the incident and he flatly denies the claims made by his nephew. He was granted bail and is due back in court on 20 April 2017.

REFLECTIONS OF THE SOUL Discover the glistening diamond within you... You feel lonely and empty with no one to turn to. You reach out to friends and family for support but still feel hopeless inside. You may be looking for something outside of yourself wishing that it completes you. This feeling of restlessness spurs you on an aimless quest hoping to find the 'thing' that is missing... So what is this that you are looking for? “Deep within you is all that you seek, if you are willing to give it a peek. Just explore inside of you and be sure to find all that you have been relentlessly searching for. At the door to your very own soul, you will unlock the hidden treasure and more attaining your heart's goal. Discover the eternal love, peace and joy that epitomise who you really are as a whole! Unleash your freedom
and uniqueness, and rekindle the love you once had before. As it is now time to acknowledge your own greatness and be in awe, letting your true essence shine more and more! Self acknowledgement increases self love and self acceptance, and these two ingredients serve as a foundation to cementing your self esteem. When you love and accept yourself unconditionally, you open the doors for others to do the same. Nurturing your self esteem leads to inner happiness and contentment. The way you communicate with yourself can either lift you higher or break you down. The most important relationship to foster is the relationship you have with yourself. Be a compassionate friend to yourself, not your worst enemy. People mirror your thoughts,
internal dialogue and the beliefs you have about yourself. Therefore if you think positively about who you are, others will too. Ultimately how people treat you is a direct reflection of how you treat yourself. So if you love, honour and respect yourself completely, others around you will automatically reciprocate. The first step in attaining inner bliss is to cultivate a loving relationship with yourself by planting the seeds of self love and self acceptance in the garden of your soul, and watch your self esteem and relationships grow and flourish... discovering the true diamond that you are! - Farah Manjoo Holistic Empowerment Coach & Learning Strategist BARAAQA Healing Sanctuary & Learning Centre 083 786 4417
CANSA Shavathon 2017 The Cancer Association of South Africa has been leading the fight against Cancer in South Africa for the past 87 years. During the 2017 CANSA Shavathon fund-raising event, they hope to raise R10 million. All funds raised are used to assist CANSA continue with delivering their unique, integrated service to the public. To achieve this goal CANSA KWADUKUZA will once again be hosting the CANSA SHAVATHON 2017 event at the Stanger Super Spar complex on Saturday, 25th February 2017, from 8h00 to 18h00. The public is urged to come and support this worthy cause by having their heads shaved or sprayed for a donation of R5000 per adult or R25-00 for children 13 years or younger. We will also have bandanas and teddy bears for sale. Shavathon is a time to honour those fighting cancer and also to honour loved ones who have passed on. It will once again help unite the nation in the fight against cancer and raise funds so that CANSA can continue supporting cancer survivors and those touched by cancer. Every Shavathon is different for survivors and for those supporting them by shaving or spraying their hair. For some it is an emotional moment of quiet reflection having their hair shaved in remembrance of those who are touched by cancer, loved ones lost and people they don't even know. For others, especially the kids, it is a fun and colourful way of raising funds and showing solidarity with the millions of South Africans touched by cancer. Everybody knows somebody who has been affected by cancer in some way. Shavathon gives you the opportunity to help us fight cancer in a substantial and memorable way. For further information you can call Stephen Naidoo on 0823009537. If you are unable to come to Stanger Super Spar, please support our tin collections that will be taking place at different locations in and around KwaDukuza and on the streets of KwaDukuza.

Councillor’s Corner
Shivarathri celebration
KwaDukuza and her citizens - burgeoning frustration, silver lining always! I hope that each councillor within this great municipality of ours, has an idealist mindset coupled with visionary desires with regards to Vision 2030... Their vision 2030 and you t h e c i t i z e n ' s #KwaDukuzaVision2030 (yes have your say on Twitter or Facebook with this hashtag). The mere mention of crime in the CBD and residential areas maybe "buzzkill." The "overkill" is the situation of so-called carguards. According to people I spoke to there are many types of illegitimate car guards who give the genuine ones a bad name. There are those that are allegedly harrasing women, especially in Chief Albert Luthuli Street, by slapping
windows. There is the guy who puts on the reflector vest so he can get spare change for his next whoonga fix to the guy who allegedly triples as a runner, thief and selling dud USB flash sticks. A suggestion is for security companies to form an association (eg. KwaDukuza Car guard Federation). Each Car guard will be officially cleared and have numbered vests. The feel good is WhatsApp and the chat groups that allow KDM officials, councillors, law enforcement and towns people to interact and help citizens, in real time, is a phenomenal innovation... the silver lining. Cllr Vernon Pillay Secretary: DA Ilembe Constituency

The newly acquired Shiva Murthi will be installed on Friday 24 February 2017 on Shivarathri Night. The 1.5m murthi from India is the latest addition. Shiva devotees are encouraged to attend and receive the blessing of Lord Shiva the destroyer of negative energies and evil forces. The trisul (trident) represents the three gunas (qualities) namely Sattva guna stands for purity, knowledge and goodness, Raja guna stands for action and passion Tamo guna stands ignorance and dullness. These three qualities are prevalent in everyone the good, bad and the mixed all arising out of passion. The choices are in our hands. Goodness will take you upwards, passion you will remain in the middle and ignorance will take you downwards. These three gunas or qualities of nature and
their influence on beings are in proportion that is different. Shivaratri is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Devotees are awake the whole night and offer bael leaf on the Lingum. Shivaratri will be celebrated at the Shree Hanuman Temple, 19 Rose Road, Stanger Manor on Friday 24 February 2017 at 6pm. Devotees are free to offer fruits and milk and participate in the hawan. For 34 years the temple has remained steadfast in observing and celebrating all important Hindu functions. All welcome, Prasad and meals will be served. Proteas : Proud of record Cape Town - Proteas skipperAB de Villiers says that although he is proud of his team's consecutive ODI winning record, he believes a loss is inevitable. Sunday night's four-wicket win against New Zealand in the first ODI at Eden Park saw the Proteas extend their winning streak in one-day cricket to 12 consecutive wins. The Proteas have not lost an ODI game since their triangular series loss to the West Indies in June last year. De Villiers believes that a loss is inevitable, but would like to continue the Proteas winning streak and seal the ODI series in New Zealand. "We don't play for those kind of records, but it's a nice one to have, we are very well aware of it," De Villiers told reporters on Sunday at Eden Park.
"We're only human and we know we're going to lose a game along the line that's the nature of the beast, but we will hang onto that record for as long as we can. "We go to Christchurch next and hopefully we win another one. "The series is at no means over, but we'll take it one step at a time. Christchurch is next and we'll assess then. "We're really proud of that record and hopefully we can continue that." If the Proteas defeat New Zealand on Wednesday, they will hold second-place for the highest number of consecutive victories behind Australia who've won 21 consecutive ODI games in 2003. The second ODI gets underway in Christchurch on Wednesday, February 22 (00:00 SA time).

Mountains in the sea With 2017 already a month old, members of the Smurfs Hiking Club were back in action in Eastern Cape, Coffee Bay. Beautiful blue skies and warm balmy days greeted the group as they explored the dramatic and rugged coastline with the assistance of local trail guides. The group ventured into secluded caves and hidden rock formations. With nerves of steel and heart on their
sleeves, they negotiated tough and challenging offroad conditions successfully. Having kicked off the major adventure hot spots like 'hole in the wall', summit of the boiling point, Umtata River Mouth, Mapuzi Point, and a thrilling river crossing of the famous Mpako River, the group returned after another memorable and adventurous trip. This humble but determined mountain club have always

Dawnheights slump to KDAC to host welcome party yet anothigher defeat
Harlequins were victorious against relegation bound Dawnheights
Dawnheights survival in the elite KwaZulu Natal Cricket Union Challenge League (stream I) lays in tatters after slumping to yet another defeat in their league game played this past Sunday at the KwaDukuza Country Club grounds. Home ground advantage did little to lift the local outfit against the visiting Umbilo Harliquins. With the game reduced to just 25 overs due to rain, Dawnheights were required to score at a blistering pace to set a competitive target. However, they got off to a poor start, losing their first
four wickets for a paltry 12. Dawnheights lost wickets at regular intervals and only managed 104 after losing all their wickets. The only batsmen to register some type of resistance and register double digits were opener Levan Moodley who scored a painstaking 24 with only a single boundary whilst Rajen Naidoo was their star batsman accumulating 33 runs not out that included 2 boundaries and 2 huge sixes. Jaswanth Singh could only register 10. In reply, Harlequins made a steady start to their run chase
with openers John (13), Faisal (18) and number 3 batsmen Daniel (12) contributing 43 runs. However, Dawnheights bounced back into contention reducing Harlequins from 87/5 to 99/9 in the last over, thanks mainly to Levan who took 2 wickets in the final over. With the last wicket remaining, Dawnheights were within sight of victory. However, they were denied that as Harlequins scored the winning runs with the second last ball of the game.

Sunbrook battle for victory
Sunbrook had to dig deep into their reserves to beat a rampant Cool Leaders 2-1 in their opening round robin fixture in the Trophies Engravers sponsored Top 8 round robin match hosted by the KwaDukuza Volleyball Association last Thursday at the association courts. The tournament changed format this season from a straight knockout to teams playing in two pools with the winners and runners up from each pool advancing to the
knockout stages. Cool Leaders came all out in the opening set taking a commanding 17-12 lead. Sunbrook, still trying to get rid of the cobwebs after a long break slowly clawed their way back into the game reducing the deficit 16-17. Cool Leaders got their act together and advanced to 2317, but Sunbrook once again clawed back to 22-23. However, it was a little too late for Sunbrook as Cool Leaders won the set 25-23.
The wheels on Cool Leaders bus came off in the second set as Sunbrook took total control to cruise to a 2514 victory and force the game into the third and decisive set. The final set proved to be a humdinger bringing both sets off supporters to their feet with both teams giving it their all. The teams changed ends w i t h Sunbrook in a slender 8-7
lead. After the change, both teams continued to match each other. With scores tied at 15-15, the game could have went either way but Sunbrook held on for a narrow 17-15 win. Sunbrook have almost guaranteed their passage into the semi's as their only threat lying from fellow division I outfit Preston who
lost their opening fixture against KSST 25-17, 25-10. In the other pool, favourites to advance into the semi's, Grove End and Randsons did not make heavy weather of their victories. Randsons demolished Division I champions Darnall United whilst Premier League champions cruised past
Manor Old Boys 25-20, 2512. The second round of the round robin fixtures takes place tonight (Wednesday) at the association courts. In other volleyball news, KDVA will host their Annual General Meeting this Thursday, 23 February at the Quartz Conference Centre commencing at 7pm.
