Covid-19 third wave alert Many countries are experiencing the third wave of covid-19, local experts believe that after Easter celebrations, South Africa could experience a third wave as some citing relaxed lockdown regulations and holiday revelry are the reason for a resurgence. Health Minister Zweli Mkhize is concerned of a possible third wave of the virus after Easter, he added

the virus will spread again during SA winter months in June and July. South African Medical Research Council Respiratory and Meningeal Pathogens Research Unit at Wits, Director and Vo l c a n o l o g y p r o f e s s o r Shabir Madhi said the third wave of the virus will come to down to control of the human behaviour, “The virus is completely unpredictable

so controlling it is difficult but we have complete control over our own behaviour. It is simple, the more people infected the more chances for the virus to mutate as a response to our antibodies which increases the chance for more variants and a third wave. Most infections are caused by gatherings and flouted preventative measures which is a fear of the April holidays,” M a d h i said. L a s t w e e k Mkhize UNISEX announced Also stockist of: Hair-dye, Shampoo, Conditioner, Face Masks, Gel

infrastructure must be built with the dependence of the 30 national vaccinations facilities to thousands which can accommodate rural areas. On Thursday, Finance Minister Tito Mboweni said he was told the third wave will hit soon while he hoped for a reprieve it will be bad for the economic which is worse than the first and second wave. “I'm scared that the third wave is coming. It's going to be more vicious than the second one,” said Mboweni. He feared the third wave may trigger a lockdown escalations that could hinder

43 million vaccines were secured through a deal with Covax, Pfizer and Johnson& Johnson, By 30 April 2021, the short term goal was to vaccinate about one million health care workers with a long term goal being to vaccinate 40 million people which is about 67% of the population by the end of 2021 to achieve herd immunity. With Media Hack Collective's vaccination tracking calculator stating it would take 17 years to achieve the 67% vaccination target. The herd immunity would change once South Africa enters the mass vaccination however

t h e E c o n o m i c Reconstruction and Recovery Plan. “We learned a lot since level 5 to now at level 1, we are now learning bad lessons as people act like we are no longer under lockdown. I wish we could all co-operate, the third wave has to be managed in a way that maintains economic activity, In November ratings agencies Moody's and Fitch downgraded the country further into junk status based on concerns of rising debt levels, the government's ability to raise revenues and pay off debt inflicted by the pandemic,” added Mboweni.

We must be a society of equal opportunity for all, regardless of one's race, sex, sexual orientation or whether one is able bodied or a person with disabilities. And it means that we must all work together, whether as government, labour, business or communities. We must rebuild a society that is far better than the one that came before it. We must become a society that is free from poverty, hunger and deprivation. We must become a society where women and children are free from violence, and where their rights are protected. President Cyril Ramaphosa says his government is working hard to ensure that every citizen is vaccinated against the Covid19. Ramaphosa was speaking during the virtual commemoration of Human Rights Day where 69 innocent people were killed during an antipass protest march led by the PAC in Sharpeville in 1960, “We have been able to weather the coronavirus storm in large part because of the strong culture of human rights in our country. Human rights that were hardwon by the heroes and heroines of Sharpeville and the countless heroes and heroines of our struggle for liberation broadly. They were firm in their conviction that freedom for some is freedom for none; and that nobody must be left behind. It was at Sharpeville that President Nelson Mandela signed our democratic Constitution into law 25 years ago. The Constitution is a shade and a shelter for all,” said Ramaphosa. He said the country was now in the phase of reconstruction and recovery saying his government was working to build a new economy that promises equal opportunity for all. “In doing so, let us remember that this is a struggle for all of us far greater than ourselves. It is not a fight not for our own piece of

KWANONGOMA: Burial procession before the funeral for the late King Goodwill Zwelithini to his KwaKhethomthandayo Palace.

King Goodwill Zwelithini was laid to rest on Thursday 18 March, he was interred during the early hours of Thursday morning in a private ceremony attended only by close male relatives. The king made history as the longest-serving monarch of the Zulu nation, with a reign that spanned five decades. Zwelithini, 72, died from health problems related to diabetes last

Friday and he was buried in a traditional ceremony known as “ukutshalwa kweNkosi”, which is attended by only senior men of the royal family, many wearing colourful Zulu regalia. After Zwelithini's burial, President Cyril Ramaphosa was among the speakers at a memorial service who praised the king, “It was during his reign that the Zulu nation achieved harmony and peace. It was during the course of his reign that

his people alongside all the people of our country realised the dream of freedom from the injustices of colonialism and apartheid,” said Ramaphosa. Others attending the memorial included former President Jacob Zuma, Princess Charlene of Monaco, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize, CAF president Patrice Motsepe and many others.

20 children undergo heart surgery in honour of King Zwelithini

CHAIRMAN: Vivian Reddy, Chairman of Sibaya donated R5 million to The Children's Cardiac Foundation of South Africa in honour of the late King Goodwill Zwelithini.

Twenty children on the waiting list for corrective heart surgery will have a second chance at life through a R5 million donation from the Sibaya Community Trust, in honour of King Goodwill Zwelithini. The Children's Cardiac Foundation of South Africa, the recipient of the donation, is the brainchild of cardiac surgeon Professor Robin Kinsley and was established

in 2018 in partnership with Lenmed eThekwini Hospital & Heart Centre. “This donation by Sibaya has enabled us to operate on at least 20 or more children in the memory of King Goodwill Zwelithini. I hope the contribution will be a starting point and that many others will come forward. My hope is that we have a tree of life that we will call the King Goodwill

Zwelithini paediatric cardiac tree,” said Professor Robin Kinsley. Vivian Reddy, Chairman of Sibaya Community Trust said during his last meeting with King Goodwill Zwelithini, they discussed many different issues, but the King has always been fond of children, “His Majesty loved children, we thought it would be a good gesture to save the lives of these children from poorer communities in his name. In his death, 20 lives will be saved,” said Reddy. Honouring the king's wishes, Reddy will also be building a shelter for victims of gender based violence. He said a team currently working with the Phoenix Child Welfare had been assembled and they had identified land and architects had been commissioned, “We are going to have a marvellous building, we will make it special. I think it is important that more businesses and the government honour his majesty with naming buildings after him because he did so much, he saved the province.” Added Reddy

WINNERS: SPAR shoppers won themselves a R500 SPAR shopping voucher in the Clover competition.

Aljam-ah councillor, AK Dawood was called by concerned businesses to act on their behalf with an environmental and health disaster right under our noses at the taxi and bus rank. The raw sewages that overflow from council erected manhole is totally unacceptable. And is creating a serious health hazard to the passengers and workers from Hesto that take that route to board busses to various destination. The smell and the stink will definitely cause a human disaster in terms of the health of the citizens that take that route by foot.

As councillor I was shocked to see a person drinking water from the same still water by the taxi rank I am sure the water is not for human consumption. Manholes are broken and not repaired Those who are responsible should be brought to book I don't believe any human being should go through this awful smell of sewage and urine stink. If the of Department Health have a conscious I think together with KDM iLembe should visit the site and do an inspection to see for themselves the place in question which is the bus and taxi rank.

At this point in time close to an election, promises of housing especially; is used to bait citizens for their and families' votes. Local Government Election (LGE) 2021, in the midst of a pandemic, has all of us vulnerable and voter canvassing promising you housing, can be a pipe dream (look at Rocky Park). Oh and if ANY political party throws this “Rocky Park houses will be available soon,” rhetoric; know that it is a pipe bomb of emptiness. Cllr Sahajana (Sarge) Naidoo and I (both from the DA), along with our activists; have been on the ground; these past five years, educating citizens on misnomers about who gives houses and more. Cllr Vernon Pillay KwaDukuza

PICTURED SEATED: From Left: Cllr Kathleen Naidoo (chairperson Ilembe Constituency), Extreme right Cllr Madhun Sobram Sing (Caucus Leader) Contesting for Provincial positions: From Left: Marlaine Nair (Provincial Deputy Chairperson), Hlengiwe Precious Shozi (Deputy Provincial Leader), Sikelela Emmanuel Mhlongo (Provincial Leader), Bongummusa Cyril Nhlabathi(Provincial Chairperson),Sithembiso Ngema(Provincial Deputy Chairperson).

Some of the DA candidates contesting for positions at the elective Provincial Congress this Saturday descended from KwaDukuza, on Friday, canvassing for support from delegates in the iLembe constituency. All candidates

were passionate of serving and growing the party to its full potential. With local government elections round the corner hopefully between August and November its important right leaders are elected at provincial level to

map a way forward with our campaigns. The iLembe constituency wished them good luck on their campaign and will work closely with the leadership that will be elected on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola insists he has no regrets over Jadon Sancho's decision to quit Manchester City for Borussia Dortmund. Sancho graduated from City's youth academy as one of the brightest young stars in Europe. But he opted to leave the Premier League club for Dortmund in 2017 over fears City's collection of world-class talent would deny him regular playing time. The 20-year old has gone on to become a key figure for Dortmund, while also breaking into the England squad. Now Sancho is set for a reunion with Guardiola after Premier League leaders City were pitted against the Bundesliga club in Friday's Championship League draws. Asked if he was frustrated Sancho rejected a contract offer when he was 17. City boss Guardiola made it clear he is happy to see the youngster thrive away from the Etihad Stadium. “I've said many times, it is not a regret. He decides. He's doing really well. Congratulations, he's an exceptional player.” Guardiola said. “He is a national player with huge quality, doing really well in Dortmund. We wanted him to stay but he decided to leave, and when people decide to leave all we can do is let them leave. I wish him all the best, except when he plays against us. No regrets at all. If he's happy, I'm happy.” Sancho has not made a first team appearance at City when he was sold to Dortmund for just 8 million pounds. That looks a bargain as Sancho is reportedly valued at 108 million pounds by Dortmund, with Manchester United among the clubs interested in him. Guardiola does not wonder what might have been, saying: “Nobody knows. Maybe he stays and we don't play good or better. The life of every person decides what life they lead. We will face him, try to control him. We know the quality he has, everyone knows. The quality in Dortmund is from all departments. They are a strong team.” Sancho is currently sidelined with a calf injury but is expected to be fit for the games against City on 6 and 14 April.

First Indian woman to complete MyLife Dusi Canoe Marathon

RACE: Aadila Kajee and Abby Solms with their medals they completed the MyLife Dusi Canoe Marathon in Durban.

Aadila kajee was the first Indian woman to finish the MyLife Dusi Canoe Marathon which took place on, Saturday, 20 March 2020 with guidance of two-time champion Abby Solms. Kajee a resident of Pietermaritzburg took on the three day race. It has been a whirlwind build-up for the former, Wykeham Collegiate pupil who had never picked

up a paddle let along been on a canoe before. Planted the seed when she started running during lockdown, “On one of the runners our group was chatting about their various experiences at the Dusi,” Kajee said. “They were arguing what is more difficult, Comrades or Dusi and they mentioned that they have run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban,

some have also ridden from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, and they were just saying it is amazing achievement to have done the route from Pietermaritzburg to Durban in all three formats, run, ride and paddle, so that is when I thought maybe I should try and be one of these insane people to try and achieve all three,” Added Kajee.

KZN teenage girl accused of bullying jailed for no-show in court A 16-year-old girl accused of assaulting another girl has been sentenced to three months in jail for failing to appear in court, the KwaZulu-Natal education department said on Sunday. The teenage girl was charged with assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm after “severely assaulting a fellow girl learner” from Mathole High School in the Zululand district. Footage of the incident was circulated on social media and the family of the victim opened a case against her at the police station in Mahlabathini. The accused was released into the care of her mother and was supposed to appear

in court again on February 23 but she did not show up. At the next appearance, on March 9, she could not offer an explanation for her noshow in February. “She failed to provide reasons and the magistrate found her guilty for failing to appear in court and she was sentenced to three months' imprisonment for failure to appear before court. KZN bullied pupil 'recovering very well' says education department “The grade 11 learner, who has started serving the three months' jail term, is expected to appear before the court once again on March 31 where the matter of assault with intention to cause

grievous bodily harm will once again be heard,” the department said in a statement. Education MEC Kwazi Mshengu said he hoped the sentence would serve as a deterrent. “We have had a number of cases involving learners that are bullying others in schools. Despite our spirited campaigns to plead with our learners to desist from this behaviour, it appears that some continue to disregard our call. We hope that this sentence and the likelihood of another one for assault will serve as a deterrent and a harsh lesson to all other wayward learners,” said Mshengu.

18 drunk drivers arrested in KZN over the weekend KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Ms Neliswa Peggy Nkonyeni has lambasted the 18 drunk drivers who were arrested in the province over the long weekend, for putting innocent lives at risk by driving under the influence of alcohol. Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, members of the provincial Road Traffic Inspectorate were out in full force during the long weekend and stopped 7953 vehicles at roadblocks and other operations. This resulted in 672 written charges being issued to motorists, while 51 vehicles were suspended, and 136 motorists were charged for driving without a driver's licence. A total of 18 motorists were arrested for drunken driving and 171 motorists were charged for speeding. Furthermore, a total of 102 motorists were

charged for various offences that include failure to wear seatbelts, driving unlicensed vehicles and inconsiderate driving. Commenting on the long weekend operations, MEC Nkonyeni warned that motorists who continue to undermine the authority of the state will be arrested as additional law enforcement authorities will be deployed on all major roads throughout the province during the Easter period as part Operation Vala multidisciplinary law enforcement operations, “Our law enforcement officers will continue implementing a zero-tolerance policy against drinking and driving because drivers who consume alcohol while driving or drive while drunk can lead to fatal road crashes. We wish to commend our Road Traffic Inspectorate officers for ensuring maximum compliance and arresting the 18 drivers who were driving

under the influence of alcohol as they could have killed many innocent road users,” said MEC Nkonyeni. MEC Nkonyeni said a large number of traffic officers will be deployed on provincial roads, predominantly covering the N2 and N3to ensure the maximum safety of motorists. Police visibility will also be intensified during the Easter period due to the expected influx of vehicles to our province, “Our Road Traffic Inspectorate officers are not only going to focus on drunk drivers but will also concentrate on checking the roadworthiness of vehicles, overloading, as well as motorists who use mobile phones while driving. Motorists who insist on breaking the law and endangering the lives of other road users will face the dire consequences of their actions,” warned MEC Nkonyeni.
