Ecstatic Winner of ‘SPAR Win a Car’ Competition!

he Department of Human Settlements and Public Works led by MEC Peggy Nkonyeni together with ILembe District Municipality and Mandeni Local Municipality held a Mandela Day programme on 18 July 2019. The day's proceedings kicked off with an unannounced visit to Sundumbili Clinic and Mandeni SASSA offices where the officials handed gifts and interacted with the people. This intervention was also used to address some of the challenges faced by employees when executing their day-to-day duties. The highlight of the day was a handover of two of the nine houses for disabled people at Macambini Area (ward 02 & 09). The fully-furnished houses were handed to the elated beneficiaries, Bukwaphi Mhlongo (ward 02) and Khethiwe Ngubane (ward 09). The former shared her delight for being among beneficiaries of this programme. “I am grateful for everything; our government really listens. It feels great to have a decent roof over your head. Thank you to the government. This has really changed my life”

said the overjoyed Mhlongo. The two beneficiaries also received groceries and officials prepared a garden in their homes to ensure they have food on their tables. Speaking on this occasion, Mayor Phindile Sishi cited that Nelson Mandela himself would be proud of this intervention as he believed that all people are equal regardless of their disabilities and background. “Our government made a commitment to uplift people from all backgrounds, today on Mandela day we are heeding that commitment” MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works, Peggy Nkonyeni said that her department has committed itself to prioritizing disabled people in the current financial year. “We have resolved to prioritize disabled people, it is our duty as government to identify them and make sure they are elevated to live decently and contribute to the mainstream economy of our country” said the MEC. The day's proceedings were folded at Macambini Multi-purpose Hall where 10 disadvantaged community members received blankets and food hampers. ILembe District Municipality Mayor, His Worship Sduduzo Gumede, his Deputy, Cllr. Dolly Shandu and HOD Mr. Tubane were among the dignitaries who took part in this event

Luthuli's legacy celebrated at KwaDukuza The life of the late Chief Albert Luthuli of Groutville was once again celebrated through sports on Friday, 19 July and Saturday, 20 July. An annual event, the Luthuli Legacy celebrations were launched in 2017 on the 50th anniversary of the unfortunate and untimely passing of KwaDukuza's inimitable son, Inkosi Albert John Luthuli, after a debatable accident on the railway bridge in Groutville, on the 21st July 1967. A fundraising Golf Day was held at the Umhlali

Country Club on 19 July with monies raised to be used to support Groutville community-based initiatives while the Chief Albert Luthuli walk and fun run took place in Groutville the next day. The walk and fun run endeavours to promote a healthy lifestyle and afford participants with the opportunity to experience all sites Chief Luthuli visited and worked regularly. The legacy walk and fun run was organised by the Luthuli Museum in partnership with iLembe

District Municipality, Enterprise iLembe, KwaDukuza Local Municipality and the Department of Sports and Recreation in the district. His Worship the Mayor of iLembe District Municipality Cllr Siduduzo Gumede took part in this year's fun run while Acting Mayor of KwaDukuza Local Municipality Cllr Dolly Govender took part in the walk. Ballito councillor Tammy Colley also took part in the fun run coming in third in the women's section.

SMA blanket drive The members of the Stanger Muslim Association (SMA) were a welcome sight for the residents of

Maphumulo this past Sunday. The SMA distributed over 130 blankets in the area as part of a winter

Teaching and learning SA mourns death disrupted at local of “White Zulu” school

The uniform they're currently using costs roughly R600, now they will pay more than a thousand Rand for a school uniform. We will fight to the nail to ensure this does not happen on our watch, most parents from this area rely on social grant,” said Ngema. According to COSAS, teaching and learning resumed yesterday. Attempts to reach the school principal and the Department of Education in KwaDukuza were unsuccessful at the time of going to press.

MUSICIAN: South African singer, Johnny Clegg passed away last week

South Africans across the country have paid tribute to late musician, Johnny 'White Zulu' Clegg. It is reported that Clegg (66) was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2015, which ultimately lead to his death on 16 July 2019. He died in his Johannesburg home surrounded by loved ones and was laid to rest the following day in Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg. Following his death, condolences began to pour in. King Goodwill Zwelithini said he was deeply hurt by the news. “Clegg shot to the spotlight during the dark days

of apartheid when blacks and whites were not allowed to work together and he worked with (Sipho) Mchunu. He also looked beyond the lines of apartheid and worked with black people. That shows he never believed in the apartheid system of segregating people according to race. We wish that the country can have more people like him, people who look beyond race. We can say he never had apartheid leanings in his blood,” said Zwelithini Clegg was a vocal voice during the apartheid struggle, he is also known for his famous song 'Asimbonanga'.

Councillor Dolly Govender, has welcomed the commencement of this training session. MANDELA-DAY: Inkanyezi Yokwethaba Foundation embarked on a series of charitable activities to commemorate Mandela Day, 18 July 2019.

As the world commemorated Mandela Day on 18 July 2019, an NPO known as Inkanyezi Yo k w e t h a b a F o u n d a t i o n embarked on a series of charitable activities, mainly focussing on early childhood development. Inkanyezi Yokwethaba Foundation teamed up with various Government divisions and private sector companies, the day's proceedings

began with an awareness campaign from Prospect Farm PS to Madundube Market on the R74. The main objective was to shed light on health, environmental issues and challenges faced by teenagers. Speaking to the Xpress Times, Mhlengi Ngcobo, who is one of the founders of the organisation cited that they're driven by the actions of Nelson Mandela trying to curb poverty in society.

Organisers proceeded to two primary schools where they handed over stationary, school uniforms, school shoes, clothes and food parcels to learners who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. KwaDukuza resident Nishani Duwarka was recently named National Top Achiever in the South African Institute of Professional Accountants' (SAIPA) Professional Evaluation exam held in May 2019. The Professional Evaluation is a four and a half hour written exam that every prospective SAIPA member must pass before being admitted as a member of

SAIPA and awarded the designation of Professional Accountant (SA). The May 2019 Professional Evaluation exam saw 600 candidates from across the country participate with Nishani being named as the highest scoring candidate. In recognition of her achievement, she was recently honoured at a gala dinner held by SAIPA at the Riverside Conference Centre in Durban.

Everybody I know has stories about how they or people they care about have been treated badly at work. I am sure that every person reading this has their own stories of people not being treated like people. At the same time, good companies are starting to learn that treating their staff well is good for business. These companies are realising that their most valuable resource really is a workforce that is respected, happy and engaged. The problem for businesses is that many of the courses that train people to understand how a business works, don't train them to understand how people work. Well-intentioned business owners make decisions that cause unhappiness in their teams. Executives make “good business decisions”, forgetting to think about how choices will affect the daily lives of their employees. This is just one area where companies are turning more and more to the Social Sciences for help. Anthropologists, sociologists, and psychologists are able to help companies understand their people. The ball ricocheted off Stokes's bat as he attempted a second run while the throw came in from the infield. It raced to the boundary and England was credited 6 runs. Off the last ball 2 runs were needed. Only 1 was scored and the innings' scores were tied at 241 apiece. The match had gone to a "super over", the first in the history of the competition since its inception in 1975. More drama was to follow. England batted first and notched up 15 runs. The Black Caps were on the verge of making history. Once again, in a matter of minutes, the result hinged on the last ball of the over. Two runs were required and the batsman was run out going for the second run. Once again the match was tied! Can drama be so heightened that such a result can be attained within a matter of minutes? The rules of the competition had to be turned to and they stated that in the event of a tie in the super over, then the side scoring more boundaries in the match and super over would be declared winners. So England, who knew the situation, had won the match in the most dramatic of fashions. The

crowd went delirious and the country was in a state of euphoria. They had lifted the Holy Grail and become the third host country to be champions (for the third consecutive time). A similar drama was being enacted at Wimbledon where perennial rivals, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovich, were meeting in the men's singles final. The last set was tied at 12 all and a tie-breaker would be played (according to the new rules). This time, the defending champion, Djokovich, prevailed and Federer had failed to add to his number of Grand Slam titles as he is coming to the end of his career. So a weekend of nerve-wracking sports

had come to an end to leave all fans with a sense of satisfaction. Let's hope for more such exciting events in the future. Until the next time, have a happy sporting week.

K w a D u k u z a Vo l l e y b a l l Association will host the 10th anniversary of the Ralph Reuben Memorial volleyball tournament which is scheduled to get underway tomorrow (Thursday) at the association courts at Stanger High commencing at 7pm. The young, prolific, jovial and inspirational volleyball player lost his life tragically in June 2010. Each year thereafter, The Reuben family have sponsored the volleyball tournament in his memory. Isaac Abraham, president of KDVA thanked the Reuben family for their sponsorship and for keeping the memories of their star player alive. The tournament will be contested by 9 teams affiliated to the association. At the draws made this past Monday at the Quartz, Cool Leaders, Bethel CC, Heights, KSST and Darnall

United will contest Pool A with Sunbrook, Glenhills, Shakas Sporting and Manor Old Boys drawn in Pool B. Looking at the draws, volleyball pundits have already predicted Bethel and Darnall as favourites from Pool A to qualify for the semi finals whilst Shakas and Sunbrook are tipped to progress.
