iLembe hosts hand washing campaign As part of its month long Global Hand washing Campaign, the iLembe District Municipality in partnership with various government departments visited Ramakalan Primary School in KwaDukuza on 18 October 2018. The event was meant to educate the learners about the importance of washing hands with soap to curb the spread of communicable diseases, such as diarrhoea and other related diseases. Children are vulnerable to a lot of sicknesses due to the conditions of where they stay or play. The hand washing
lessons and demonstrations are critical towards improving the well-being of the children and are reducing high mortality rates. Department of Health Nutritional Advisor, Ntombifuthi Mngoma, told learners that diseases such as diarrhoea can be prevented if everyone washes frequently. ILembe District Municipality Environmental Health practitioners Thobile Mkhize and Mrs Nokukhanya Gabela advised the learners about the importance of washing their hands with soap at all critical times before handling food or after using
the toilet. They also told the learners that diseases such as diarrhoea can be prevented if everyone washes their hands regularly with clean water and soap. Ms Khawula, Ramakalan school Principal, thanked the departments and other stakeholders for choosing their school for this health education. “The hand washing education that you are bringing to our school will go a long way in sensitising the learners and the parents present here today about the importance of washing hands,” said the Principal.

MISSION: (L-R): Mayor of KwaDukuza Municipality Dr. Ricardo Mthembu, Ms. Ina Cronjé Chairperson of Trade and Investment KZN Board and Mr. Sihle Zikalala MEC for KZN Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs
Continued from Page 1 participated in various meetings where he has urged international business to explore opportunities to expand their business in markets found in KwaDukuza or those with a strong potential to be established in the region. Furthermore, he has requested businesses to
participate in business development programmes for emerging businesses with a hope that at a later stage, the beneficiaries of such programmes will export their products and services to the Russian Federation. Whilst he continues this mammoth task of persuading
investors, Dr. Mthembu has asked that local businesses also look at possible joint ventures abroad and present their interest to Trade and Investment KZN, so that it is not only businesses abroad coming to South Africa but also the local businesses going abroad.

Resident furious over constant flooding of flat By Xpress Reporter
A resident of Rocky Park in KwaDukuza has expressed her frustration as she claims that her flat has been flooded with waste and water for almost a year. The resident, who lives in a ground-floor flat at the Rocky Park Housing Project, alleges that waste from an upstairs flat has been flowing into her home. “Urine and faeces from the flat upstairs flows into my home. I am a sickly person and this just adds to my health woes,” she said. According to the disgruntled resident, her attempts to get help from KwaDukuza Municipality were in vain. “I approached KDM and they sent officials to my flat. All they did was take photos and I haven't heard from them since. They are not interested in the conditions that we are living in.” She added that she was told that the implementing agent, “SIMSI still has a hold on the property, therefore nothing can be done at the moment.” Attempts to reach the KwaDukuza Municipality for a comment were unsuccessful at the time of going to press. Worship Sphesihle Zulu highlighted key projects implemented throughout all wards under this Municipality and tabled a budget for the next financial year. Community members also got an opportunity to address concerns of their own which were either dealt with at the meeting or noted for consideration when the budget is being finalized. “As a municipality dedicated to service delivery, Mandeni implemented a host of infrastructural developments as per the various IDP meetings held leading towards the previous financial year, namely; the 2.4 km sidewalks constructed at KwaHlomendlini and are currently 95% complete (these sidewalks are being constructed by four black constructors from Mandeni), Commencement with the

Eleven-year-old Smanga Madula was found dead on Wednesday evening, a day after he was reported missing from Inqolobane Children's home situated on a farm near Prince's Grant road, KwaDukuza. Despite working tirelessly, hopes of finding Smanga were derailed by bad weather on Tuesday. Mahalo Spa Lynn Davdath of Mahalo Spa is internationally qualified and possesses vast experience in her field. She spent five years working on cruise ships, managing beauty spas on board. Mahalo Spa opened in April this year, and Lynn is now introducing the public to a new treatment - Garra Rufa fish therapy the first of its kind on the North Coast. WHERE DID GARRA RUFA ORIGINATE? The Garra Rufa fish, or commonly referred to as "doctor fish", originates in the river basins of the Northern and Central Middle East, mainly in Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran . The Garra Rufa, traditionally, provide a massage in warm water that rids the skin of its scales. The natives of Turkey have used and are still using the Garra Rufa fish to cure skin diseases as well as refresh their skin for more than 200 years. It was in Turkey that the phenomenon "Fish Spa" was born, according to local history, in the Sivas province. The first Skin Therapy clinic using Garra Rufa fish in Ireland (Limerick) was opened in 2008. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS, AND HOW DOES IT WORK? The Garra Rufa eat Only your dead skin. You will see a difference in only one treatment Helps for skin diseases such as psoriasis and eczema, stimulates blood circulation. These fish can also stimulate acupuncture points, which help in regulating the nervous system, improves skin regeneration, removes bacteria and reduces foot odour, the feeling of the fish nibbling your skin is pleasant and relaxing. This fish is famous for its ability to eat dead or diseased human skin. They don't have
The foundation that Mahalo Spa thrives on is Love. You enter into a positive, tranquil, warm and welcoming Environment. Here at Mahalo Spa our Vision is to treat your Mind, Body ans Soul, so that you leave feeling relaxed and at peace. Not only will your Body be touched, but your Mind and Soul too.
teeth so whilst calluses and other stubborn ailments are gnawed at, healthy skin is left untouched. The fish secrete an enzyme, called “Dithranol/Anthralin”, each time that it is in contact with human skin. This enzyme improves skin regeneration! A fish pedicure is a treatment that uses dozens of tiny fish to nibble away dead and hardened skin from the feet. Feet are cleansed to remove any oils, lotions and perfumed scents, which could be harmful to fish. Your feet are then immersed into the tank filled with Garra Rufa fish. You end of your therapy with a relaxing massage. D O T H E G A R R A R U FA S P R E A D INFECTION/DISEASE? The Garra Rufa fish therapy is said to stimulate blood flow and improve circulation, remove bacteria, reduce foot odour and help with athlete's foot. The risk of infection associated with Garra Rufa fish pedicures is likely to be very low, according to experts from the Health Protection Agency. The HPA is currently unaware of any cases of infection associated with the use of the fish spa pedicures. The enzyme that is secreted does a great job at treating, thus leaving minimal or even no room for infection. The risk of catching bacterial infections or parasites such as fluke worms and blood-borne viruses, including HIV and hepatitis, are unheard of! WHO CANNOT HAVE A FISH PEDICURE? Those who have open wounds, infectious health issues [Athlete's foot etc.], people who suffer with diabetes, should consult with therapist before having the treatment, if you have got your legs waxed or shaved don't go for a fish pedicure for at least 24 hours. Kindly use your own discretion when deciding to go for a Fish Pedicure, considering any ailment, disease or virus that you have, and how it will impact other clients and especially the Fish. Please speak to the therapist should you have any further queries.

Local brings honour to KwaDukuza
The stranger I grew up with
A few years after I was born, my Dad met a stranger who was new to our small town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this enchanting newcomer and soon invited him to live with our family. The stranger was quickly accepted and was around from then on. As I grew up, I never questioned his place in my family. In my young mind, he had a special niche. My parents were complementary instructors: Mum taught me good from evil, and Dad taught me to obey. But the stranger... he was our storyteller. He would keep us spellbound for hours on end with adventures, mysteries and comedies. If I wanted to know anything about politics, history or science, he always knew the answers about the past, understood the present and even seemed able to predict the future! He took my family to the first premiership game. He made me laugh, and he made me cry. The stranger never stopped talking, but Dad didn't seem to mind. Sometimes, Mum would get up quietly while the rest of us were shushing each
other to listen to what he had to say, and she would go to the kitchen for peace and quiet. (I wonder now if she ever prayed for the stranger to leave.) Dad ruled our household with certain moral convictions, but the stranger never felt obligated to honour them. Profanity, for example, was not allowed in our home - not from us, our friends or any visitors Our long time visitor, however, got away with four-letter words that burned my ears and made my dad squirm and my mother blush. My Dad didn't permit the liberal use of alcohol but the stranger encouraged us to try it on a regular basis. He made cigarettes look cool, cigars manly, and pipes distinguished. He talked freely (much too freely!) about sex. His comments were sometimes blatant, sometimes suggestive, and generally embarrassing. I now know that my early concepts about relationships were influenced strongly by the stranger. Time after time, he opposed the values of my parents, yet he was seldom rebuked... And NEVER
asked to leave. More than fifty years have passed since the stranger moved in with our family. He has blended right in and is not nearly as fascinating as he was at first. Still, if you could walk into my parents' den today, you would still find him sitting over in his corner, waiting for someone to listen to him talk and watch him draw his pictures. His name? We just call him 'TV.' He has a wife now....we call her 'Computer.' Their first child is "Cell Phone" Second child "video games" By the way, they now have a wonderful grand child She is a genius! She is fondly called "WhatsApp ". She is nearly more popular than her mom Her older cousin is " *Facebook" and new baby cousins are "Snapchat, Instagram" This stranger and members of its family appear to have taken up permanent residence in our homes and we seem powerless to check their excesses.
CONGRATULATIONS: Local resident, Riya Sing recently entered a competition on 'inspiration' with Successors Training Institute in Durban, and won a bursary award of R30 000. “I chose my parents, Cllr Madhun Sobram Sing and Sonitha Devi Sing who motivated me to better myself in many ways to become more independent and successful in my life,” said Riya. The award ceremony was held at AHA GATEWAY Hotel in Durban on 13 October 2018. Riya was the only winner amongst many that entered the competition

Festival of Light “Lead us from darkness unto light (Tamaso Ma Jyotir Gamaya)”
On November 7 South Africa will be ablaze with thousands of clay lamps lighting the land, bringing peace and prosperity to the African soil. The community of KwaDukuza will celebrate their 16th Diwali festival, organised by the Glenhills and District Diwali Committee. This function will take place on Saturday, 27th October 2018 at the Temple Hall and open space, Lot 14, Murugan Road, starting at 15:00. The festival of Diwali sees millions of Hindus around the globe celebrate in unison the festival of light and the triumph of good over evil. The Festival of light will be a day of joyous cultural celebrities, with community-embracing programme of songs, dances, sketches and talks from various cultural groups. Diwali is ultimately a time of introspection when we look at the
world with renewed enthusiasm; it is not a time of hostility nor the time for an annual critique of society but simply a reflection of a year gone by and the promise of better things yet to come. October 27th will see the Glenhills area dazzle with a kaleidoscopic aura as the fireworks are set off. Diwali, like other festivals celebrated by Hindus, is not merely religious in its appeal, but also has social cultural and community dimensions. Diwali is an occasion to strengthen bonds of friendship with people from different faiths, hence the integrated programme by the Glenhills and District Diwali Committee. In India, the Diwali festival is secular, in that it is celebrated by people, irrespective of their religious affiliation. It is hoped that Diwali will be
seen as a festival that will strengthen the bridges of communication between the multitude of cultures and religious sects in South Africa. We should not forget that our great nation has its own needs during Diwali. People are experiencing the worst kind of moral degeneration as drugs, crime and corruption is surfacing through our society and communities at large. Let us join forces in helping our communities follow the path of righteousness. The Glenhills and District Diwali Committee wishes all a joyous and festive Diwali. Be there at the Festival of light to experience the new dynamics to nation building. Date: 27 October 2018; Venue: Hare Krishna Temple Hall and Open Space; Time: 15:00. Submitted by Glenhills and District Diwali Committee
Being a community newspaper, we at the Xpress Times put you, our loyal readers first. It is with this consideration that we have engaged you, through our various festive competitions. Your response has been nothing less than outstanding. Now that Diwali fever has swept KwaDukuza, our commitment to this joyous Hindu event has not wavered. We hope that you try your luck at winning our fabulous prizes and kick off your Diwali with a little something extra. Good Luck!!
TERMS & CONDITIONS Competition is open to all. One entry per person. All entry forms must be dropped off no later than Thursday, 20 October 2016 at 3pm. No late entries will be accepted. Winners will be selected through a random draw. The judges decision is final. Staff and immediate family are exempt from entering. Drop of entries at Xpress Times office or Stanger Sweet Specialists.

Giveaway scar A career criminal with a scar on his face was not going to go too far with his trade. In his first act he allegedly snatched a pair of earrings from Nikita Singh. She followed him and he was apprehended by a local security company who managed to land a few blows with a whip before he managed to escape. The following day he snatched a cellphone from Meena Belray of Tugela. With the assistance of another security company, the culprit was apprehended. Whilst the commotion was ongoing Nikita Singh spotted the culprit and identified him by his scar. Siphiwe Sosiba (22) has been charged with two counts of robbery. He will seek bail on 31 October 2018. Staying alert Three youth appeared in court on a charge of robbery at a local tuck-shop in Shakaville. According to Samson Samuel he and his brother were held up at a gunpoint in the premises at about 12:30am, airtime, cash and cigarettes were taken. Police were alerted by an alert member of the public of possible culprits and accompanied by the victim, went to the house of the culprit. The men were identified and some of the stolen items were recovered. Sanele Njiyela (21), Solomuzi Sibisi (27) and Sibusiso Ndlovu (28) will seek bail this week for the incident. Mistaken identity There are always three sides to a story. According to Bongumusa Gumede he went to visit his girlfriend. After trying to contact her he spotted her alighting from a vehicle. An argument broke out and he seized her cellphone and made contact with a caller who had tried to contact them whilst they were arguing. The person agreed to meet him and speak to each other. A short while later a person arrived and after an argument this person shot him in the knee. He was assisted and taken to hospital for further treatment. The girlfriend Ntombi Mthembu told police that they are not in a relationship and that she has met someone else. Whilst arguing a good samaritan from the nearby compound approached them and Gumede allegedly became violent towards him and drew a knife. The man armed with a firearm warned Gumede to back off and fired a shot into the ground which ricocheted and struck him in the leg. Gumede has requested that the charge of attempted murder be withdrawn. Michael Ntuli (52) was granted bail and is due back at court on the 27 November. Police are investigating further.

jacking. As the Constituency MP for KwaDukuza, I immediately requested an urgent meeting with Minister Cele in KwaDukuza to show the community that the Government is taking this matter seriously. Regrettably, the constant dodging, delays and unwillingness by his office to commit to a meeting have only reinforced the resident's perceptions that the failing ANC run government simply does not care about the people
of KwaDukuza. However, this approach of ducking and diving by Minister Cele seems to be at odds with his approach to Westburg, Gauteng and Bonteheuwel in the Western Cape when he rushed there quicker than a blue light motorcade. Why is he treating the people of KwaDukuza differently? Why do they not deserve his urgent attention? The fact of the matter is that life in KwaDukuza has become unbearable under a Police
service which cannot protect residents from criminals as the statistics clearly show. We need Minister Cele to meet with the residents and me without delay, failing which, the DA will lead a protest to the Police station demanding his presence. For as long as the Minister refuses to meet me and the residents of KwaDukuza, we will be no closer to understanding what his plans are to counter the 1,4% conviction that has become a national embarrassment for his department.

Newly launched book to empower youth BOOK-LAUNCH: In the middle is author of 'A Christian diva thinks critically' Sibongamandla Dlomo together with the Love of the Nation Church members, during a book launch on Saturday at KwaDukuza town hall.
INTERVIEW: Dr Thomani Gomba with Sibongamndla Dlomo.
By Xpress Reporter
“A Christian Diva Thinks Critically”, written by Sibongamandla Dlomo was launched on Saturday, 20 October 2018 at the KwaDukuza Town Hall. Despite being launched during the weekend, the book is flying off the shelves. The determined author said that the book is inspired by her life experiences. She told the Xpress Times that the book is aimed at challenges facing the youth of today.
“It's time of knowing and communicating, in my life I have had traumatic experiences, therefore I decided I would write a book for the youth of Africa, which would share my experiences and equip them on how to overcome obstacles that one may come across in the journey of life. I hope this book will inspire people of all ages to turn words into wisdom,” said Miss Dlomo. This is her first book and it was not an easy mission. Dlomo said the book has already been well
received by people of all ages. “Various socials ills affecting the youth and ways to solve them are covered in the book. The society is constantly changing, so does the people. We are influenced by people around us, and I want to influence the youth to do good even when everything is going wrong,” expressed Sibongamandla. The book launch was graced by various authors from all over the country as well as neighbouring countries.

In sport, spectators often only consider “big results” as being important. But competitors tend to see things differently. For them what really counts is the level of physical and mental work you put in, to beat your opponent. I remember, as a 16-year old playing for Stanger against Pietermaritzburg in a Natal A Division match at Northdale Tennis Centre. I lost the opening set to the Pietermaritzburg No 1, Roy Naicker 6-0. Naicker pushed me from end to end, hitting me off the court at times. I was exhausted and it seemed a matter of time before I would succumb. After losing the first set, my coach and manager, Mr. ML Balwanth said “You've got to fight - hang in there!” Two hours later, the score read 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 in my favour.
Why was this significant? I was a skinny teenager up against a full-grown man, who was beating the pants off me. It was also well over 35 degrees in searing Pietermaritzburg heat and I was wilting. But Mr Balwanth had given me the much-needed boost. When I stepped off the court, I can remember him just saying: “Robbie Naidoo, Robbie Naidoo!” Strangely this match did something for me and was the start of an amazing love affair with me and Pietermaritzburg.
Love affair, what do you mean?

I have played six tennis tournaments in Pietermaritzburg and won all of them - three Northdale and three Woodlands Open Championships in an unusual combination - six in three separate years - each apart from the next - with three different partners.
That sounds unusual, how did this happen? In the first year (1985), I was taken to Pietermaritzburg by Michael Balwanth, who was the senior partner and like an elder brother. Michael had a big serve and I gobbled up the points at the net. We cruised through the rounds and eventually reached the final, where we took on the Pietermaritzburg No 1 pair, Roy Naicker (again) and Sparrow Chetty. By that time, we were playing well. Again, it was a smoldering hot day and by around 5pm, the heavens opened and we had to stop the match which was pretty close at that stage. The organisers agreed to continue the game three weeks later, on the day of the Woodlands Open. We returned and won the Northdale final in the morning. We then proceeded to win the Woodlands Open despite being match point down to Natal players, Bradley Mohammed and Wayne Wheatley, in the quarters. There are two important things about this story - we won two tournaments in one day - a feat that is very rare. And secondly, Mike got registered to his wife, Reetha the night before the tournament and I was witness. I won two trophies but I guess Mike was the real winner with three!”
What was your relationship with Indran Pather like? While Mr Balwanth was the father of tennis for us, Indran was the driving force. During our high school years, we would get us to practice 3-4 hours a day - and this included our matric years (kids do not do this). We would complete all our homework at school, apart from accounting. By 4pm, we would be at the courts - Indran, Naveen and I. Michael would join us after work. We did this for about five years. It was pivotal to the development of all our careers. I met Indran when we were 13 and he immediately influenced me. Indran has an amazing mind and is a natural sportsman literally brilliant at everything. When we were 16, we competed in the famous Quik Service Stanger Doubles Championships and against all odds beat Gora Jeewa and Mike Balwanth in the final. Indran and I went onto win several titles including Natal Junior Doubles and Natal High School championships. Ironically, we played in the
Springfield Open at the Wild Coast and met the infamous Roy Naicker and Sparrow Chetty in the semis. We were 5-1 down in the match, with the first to 7 being the winner. We clawed back to win 7-5 and easily won the final.
When did you start coaching? I was 16 - first with Naveen and Yashin. Thereafter Indran and I established a coaching school in Stanger and for more than a decade produced several teams and players. At one point, we had 10 junior teams playing in the provincial leagues. Several top juniors, many who became SA champions, came through our ranks. These included Naveen Singh, Nishal Balwanth, Yashin and Razin Tewary, Yashwin, Urishka Singh and Yanitha Singh, Mohammed and Shain Manjoo, Dean Kuppan, Minesh Maharaj, Priyantha Tolsi and Yunis Moolla.
As a columnist are there things that stand out? Haha, I have a few. My famous one is that I predicted Rafa Nadal's rise before anyone had heard about him. I wrote in January 2005 in the Post Newspaper that he would be the sports starofthe year. At that point, he was unknown and lowly ranked. He went on to win the French Open and finished the yearranked No 2 in the world. When summing up the Beijing Olympics for East Coast Radio, I said live on radio that, while I had watched Bolt, Phelps, Federer and Nadal, the guy that impressed me most at the Olympics was Djokovic. I said that he hit the ball flatter and more solidly than anyone I had ever seen and that, in my opinion, he was destined to be World No 1. No one believed. He today has 14 Grand Slam titles and counting. Is there anyone else you'd like to thank? If anything, I would like to thank my teachers at Stanger Secondary. There are too many to mention but my matric form master, Mr NK Hiralal and our beloved, PE master, Mr IN Naidoo stand out. Without the high quality of education and support, none of us would have been able to attain anything. Also thanks to my parents for support and my cousin, Jay, who was a Natal athlete and who was an inspiration to me, growing up.
