The 'Human Trafficking' Awareness Campaign is to highlight the importance of human trafficking, and to ensure that the community is aware of such dangerous crimes which occur in the world. According to KwaDukuza SAPS communications officer, Priya Nunkumar, Human Trafficking is a global crime trend, where children, women and men are taken from their countries or areas they live in, and sent to a destination country or destination area by force, by being pressurised or by being tricked into a situation to be exploited. “Victims of human trafficking stay in situations of trafficking, because of two reasons: Physical entrapment the victims are physically trapped by restricting their movement, taking their documents and money. LAUNCH: KwaDukuza SAPS launched Human Trafficking Awareness Campaign.

“We urge members of the community who may have information on crimes, preferably before they are committed, to contact the SAPS on the Crime Stop number 086 00 10111. Information may also be communicated via the MySAPS App, an application which can be downloaded on any iPhone or Android. All information will be treated with strictest confidence and callers may remain anonymous”, she added.

threats of arrest, deportation and imprisonment; blackmailing the victim's family members; starvation, degradation and isolation,” said Priya Nunkumar. KwaDukuza SAPS acting Station Commander, Colonel MN Novandla urged members of the community to be aware of the crime trends which occur in the country, and to always ensure that they report any suspicious activity or behaviour immediately to their closest police station.

he ANC in KwaDukuza has taken all the executive positions in the municipality after attempts by opposition parties to form a coalition fell through. The municipality's inaugural council meeting took place on Monday, with all but one councillor being in attendance. First up on the agenda was the election of the new council speaker. The ANC nominated former mayor Cllr Dolly Govender, while the EFF nominated Cllr Thobisile Nkosi. Not to be outdone, the DA also made its nomination, opting for Cllr Kathleen Naidoo. The IEC then conducted an election, which saw the ANC's Govender being elected as the new speaker after getting 35 votes. The DA's Kathleen Naidoo only managed 15 votes, while the EFF's Thobisile Nkosi slumped to a heavy defeat, scrapping together just four votes. The new speaker then took over the meeting, calling for nominations for the new members of the executive committee (EXCO). A total of ten EXCO members were elected, with the ANC getting five EXCO seats, whilst the DA, IFP, IA, EFF and ActionSA obtained one seat each. The ANC elected councillors Lindy Nhaca, Thulani Continued on Page 6

Continued from Page 1 Ntuli, Njabulo Cele, Coleen Mdletshe and Thando Mthembu. The opposition EXCO members are Tammy Colley (DA), Thobisile Nkosi (EFF), Melisizwe Nhleko (IA), Nel Sewraj (ActionSA) and Musa Sibisi (IFP). The next item on the agenda was the election of the new mayor. The ANC nominated Cllr Lindy Nhaca, while the EFF once again nominated Thobisile Nkosi, with ActionSA chirping in with its own nomination in the person of Cllr Nel Sewraj. The IEC then came in and conducted an election by secret ballot. Predictably, the ANC's Cllr Nhaca cruised to an easy victory, garnering 35 votes, while ActionSA's Nel Sewraj secured

14 votes. The EFF's Thobisile Nkosi once again received a paltry four votes. The position of the deputy mayor was uncontested. Cllr Thulani Ntuli of the ANC was the only nominee and was duly sworn in as the new deputy mayor. Cllr Ntokozo Mbatha got the position of chief whip, which was also not contested.

Differences aside Delivering her maiden address, Mayor Nhaca thanked the people of KwaDukuza for participating in the election. She added that her election, being a woman, was further proof of the ANC's determination to achieve gender parity in terms of senior leadership representation. “This is not a moment to

celebrate, but a moment to gather more strength to continue on our journey to deliver on our mandate of a better life for all. All political parties in this house, as different as we are, need to come to terms with the fact that the people have spoken. Now is the time to put our differences aside and work as a collective towards attaining our goal to accelerate service delivery and improve the condition of our people,” stated the mayor. Among the dignitaries who graced the meeting with their presence was the DirectorGeneral for Cogta in KZN Thando Tubane, Member of Parliament Maria Ntuli, DA's KZN MPLs Bradley Singh and Sharon Hoosen and ACDP secretary general Mary Dladla.

HANDOVER: This award was presented to Mr Vivian Reddy by the Sivananda World Peace Foundation in association with GOPIO International.

Congratulations are in order for the business mogul, Mr Vivian Reddy, after he was awarded an award for his continuous contribution towards promoting peace, culture, unity in diversity and providing humanitarian relief to the underprivileged in South Africa. Vivian Reddy was honoured with this prestigious award at Jaipur Palace in Durban on 17 November 2021 during the 161st Anniversary of the arrival of indentured labourers to SA. President of Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin in Durban, Viran Singh

highly praised Vivian Reddy, citing that the business tycoon has always been a trendsetter, “I know Mr Reddy for the past forty two years, when I joined Umgeni Jayees at the age of 18. An individual who started his empire from nothing, an entrepreneur par excellence, he contributed to the welfare of Society long before he became an industrialist. We look up to Mr Reddy as our leader because he was innovative and empowered us as young leaders. Mr Reddy is a self-made business man with dedication and commitment to his profession. He

Singh further added that Vivian Reddy is one of the few Indians that reflect positively in society, “This honour was to recognize Indians to have displayed exceptional leadership qualities, in the Indian Diaspora He certainly is a legend in our Community and the Country. DA “prepared to work with KDM leadership” By Xpress Reporter

PREPARED: The DA's KwaDukuza caucus leader Cllr Tammy Colley

The Democratic Alliance's KwaDukuza caucus is prepared to work together with the newly elected leadership of KwaDukuza Municipality in order to fast track service delivery. The DA's KwaDukuza caucus leader Cllr Tammy Colley expressed no shock at all

at the turn of events in regarding the constitution of the new council, which saw the ANC making a clean sweep in terms of executive positions in the municipality. The ANC has taken the positions of mayor, deputy mayor, council speaker and chief whip, after opposition parties failed to form a coalition.

Colley said opposition parties simply could not find each other during the coalition talks. “Among opposition parties there were talks, with people moving away from each other. As opposition we are looking forward to working with all parties and offering solutions. We are here to work with all the parties and with the ruling party,

just to make sure that we get back to the basics,” Colley stated. In the inaugural council meeting held at KwaDukuza Town Hall on Monday, Colley was elected as the DA's representative to the 10-member executive committee (EXCO) of KwaDukuza Municipality.

NC

The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign (16 Days Campaign) is a United Nations campaign which takes place annually from 25 November (International Day of No Violence against Women) to 10 December (International Human Rights Day). Other key commemorative days during this period include WorldAids Day on the 1st December and the International Day for Persons with Disabilities, on 3 December of every year. The theme for 2021 is “The Year of Charlotte Mannya Maxeke 16 Days of Activism moving from awareness to accountability”. Given the scourge of Gender-Based violence in the country, which is declared a national crisis, government is implementing the Emergency Response Action Plan on GenderBased Violence and Femicide, which was announced by President Cyril in September 2019. The 16 Days Campaign forms the centre point of

government's comprehensive 365 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children. During the 16 Days period, Government together with civil society and the private sector will host a series of community and sector dialogues and activities to foster a collaborative effort in dealing with GBVF.

Mandeni among taxi violence hotspots By Xpress Reporter

The town of Mandeni in iLembe District has been named as one of KwaZulu-Natal's most troublesome places in terms of taxi relate conflict. This emerged in a report delivered by the KZN Department of Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, on Thursday last week. In the report, the department says authorities have embarked on an intensified operation to clean up the industry, which has so far seen 73 taxis being impounded by law

enforcement agencies. The department says Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC Peggy Nkonyeni is thrilled about the outcomes of the operation, whose main objective is to restore stability and compliance within the taxi industry in the province. The operations were conducted in targeted areas in the province which are experiencing instability in the industry. These are joint operations led by the department's Public Transport Enforcement

Service (known as Operation Shanela), and includes the SAPS Taxi Task Team and other enforcement agencies. The main focus area of the operation is Greytown where it has been alleged that illegal operators have invaded the taxi rank, threatening to take over the rank and the operations. The department said more than 50 vehicles were impounded in Greytown alone. It added that operations were continuing. Other areas which are being targeted include Mandeni, Kranskop, uMzimkhulu, Newcastle, Harding and KwaNongoma. More operations are planned throughout the province. “In total, 72 taxis were impounded for operating without permits, 46 suspended because of their condition and unroadworthiness, while a further 47 taxis were charged for minor offenses. “The positive outcome is part of the revival and repurposing of Operation Shanela, which is aimed at strengthening law enforcement in the public transport industry,” stated

The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal has accused the ANC of “having blood on its hands”. This follows the release of the latest quarterly crime statistics, which made for some sombre reading. The DA's KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson for Community Safety and Liaison Sharon Hoosen said the crime stats, which are for the three months from July to September, are a “grim reminder of some of KZN's darkest days”. She added these figures relate directly to the unrests in July. Hoosen also accused the ANC's provincial leadership of allowing factional battles with the party's structures, which has derailed the focus from critical areas like eradication of crime. “While the statistics reflect the level of destruction of law and order during this period, they also show that KZN's citizens are

more unsafe than ever before. This is evidenced by the increase in murders up by 44.4% a figure which remains the highest in the entire country. “The DA notes in particular the increase in attempted murder cases recorded by Phoenix SAPS during this quarter which saw a staggering 320% increase. While the latter figure does not come as a surprise, what is truly shocking is that the provincial leadership has, to date, failed to take corrective measures. This is particularly relevant when it comes to sensitive issues such as racial tensions within communities,” Hoosen stated. Hoosen also noted that crimes against women, as well as house robberies continued to show an upward trend. This, she argued, made for extremely unsafe living conditions for the people of KZN. “The reality is that our people remain unsafe under everworsening conditions. Despite this, SAPS continues to under-

The DA believes that KZN's ANC-run government owes it to the people of our province to take full responsibility and turn this unacceptable situation around. The National Library of South Africa hosted an event at the KwaDukuza Town Hall on Friday 19th of November 2021. This event was attended by students, authors, libraries, schools, institutions and members of the public.

The initiative was part of the NLSA's outreach programme, where the NLSA share the services that are provided by them to the public. The Luthuli Museum was also part of the event to give support and to extend the collaboration

and strengthen partnership for future plans. The Museum further said it is still seeking ways to establish stronger linkages with the NLSA, thereby enabling the latter to support schools in the Groutville area with library materials.

Abduction and Kidnapping Prevention Tips The new norm is posting pictures of our kids, in school or their achievements, remember this give perpetrators information about our children. Also try to not take pics of the school badge or uniform or anything that might give the name or the location of you and your kids. Actually that should be a rule for any pictures. 1. Teach your children to run away from danger, never towards it. Danger is anyone or anything that invades their personal space. Teach them to yell loudly. Their safety is more important than being polite. 2. Never let your children go places alone, and always supervise your young children or make sure there is a trusted adult present to supervise them if you cannon. 3. At all times know where and who your children are with. Remind children never to take anything or respond in any way if approached by someone they do

not know. 4. Talk openly to your children about safety and encourage them to tell you or a trusted adult if anyone or anything makes them feel frightened, confused, or uncomfortable. Discuss security issues with your children so that they will understand the need for precautions. 5. Practice what you teach by creating "what if" scenarios with your children to make sure they understand the safety message and can use it in a real situation. 6. Consider installing an alarm system in your home with a monitoring feature. Make sure your home is secured with deadbolt locks, and ensure that landscaping around it does not provide places for people to hide. Check other access points, such as gates, and make sure they have been secured. Consider installing exterior lighting around your home. Have a plan if an intruder tries or gets into your home. 7. Make your children part of

securing your home. If you have installed analarm system, demonstrate it to your children and show them how to make certain that doors and windows are locked. 8. Have a list of family members who could be contacted in case of an emergency. Designate a family member or close associate who would be able to fill the role of advisor in case of an emergency. 9. Be alert to and aware of your surroundings. Know the "escape routes" and plan what you would do in different emergencies. 10. Know your employees and co-workers. Do background screening and reference checks on everyone who works at your home, particularly those individuals who care for your children. Their knowledge of your family is extensive so make sure that you have an equivalent understanding of who they are. 11. Consider varying your daily routines and habits.

South Africa to host 2027 50-over Cricket World Cup

The Cricket World Cup will return to South Africa for the first time since 2003 when the 50-over showpiece comes around again in 2027. Like the 2003 edition that was won by Australia and where the hosts bombed out in the first round, the tournament will be cohosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Kenya was the other co-host in 2003 when they famously reached the semi-finals. The announcement was made on the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Twitter feed and that means South Africa will be hosting its first senior ICC tournament since the 2009 Champions Trophy that was also won by Australia.

South Africa also hosted the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 where they also failed to make the playoffs. Cricket South Africa's acting chief executive officer Pholetsi Moseki said it was important for the World Cup to come to Africa for the growth of the game. "We're really excited and we've got a goal of growing cricket in Africa. Seeing that we're the big brother to Zimbabwe and Namibia, it was important that we pull them along and have it as an African tournament," Moseki said. "It is extremely important for the tournament and cricket is probably one of the fastest growing games in the continent and the tournament will help in this regard.”

Raheem Sterling, Rodri and Bernardo Silva got the goals as Manchester City cruised to a 3-0 win over Everton to move within three points of Premier League leaders Chelsea. City made light work of seeing off an Everton side still decimated by injuries to key players.

Tottenham 2-1 Leeds United Tottenham needed a second-half fight back to launch Antonio Conte's reign in charge with a 2-1 win over Leeds. A first win in four league games takes Tottenham above Manchester United, who sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday, up to seventh in the table and within four points of the top four.

Leicester 0-3 Chelsea Chelsea swept to a comfortable win at Leicester as N'Golo Kante's rocket helped the Premier League leaders move six points clear at the top. Antonio Rudiger opened the scoring and Kante's long-range blast put Chelsea in control before Christian Pulisic came off the bench to score in the second half.

Aston Villa 2-0 Brighton Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard enjoyed a winning start to his reign as late goals from Ollie Watkins and Tyrone Mings sealed a victory against Brighton. Gerrard was taking charge of his first Villa match after leaving Scottish champions Rangers during the international break to replace

Liverpool 4-0 Arsenal Liverpool ended Arsenal's three-month unbeaten run with a thrashing of the Gunners at Anfield to ease up to second in the Premier League. The Reds' front three of Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah were all on target before substitute Takumi Minamino set the seal on a return to form for Jurgen Klopp's men after losing for the first time in 26 games in their last outing at West Ham. Victory lifts the Reds to within four points of leaders Chelsea.

Dean Smith. The former Liverpool star saw Watkins and Mings strike in the final six minutes to give Villa their first win in six Premier League games. Smith was sacked after five successive league defeats, but Gerrard made an immediate impact as Villa climbed four points clear of the relegation zone. Gerrard is the first Villa manager to win his maiden Premier League game in charge since John Gregory in 1998.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is under intense pressure after Watford's stunning win pushed the beleaguered Norwegian to the brink of being sacked. United crashed to a fourth defeat in their last five Premier League games, leaving them languishing 12 points behind leaders Chelsea.
