Youth League calls for prioritisation of co-operatives

Continued from page 1 desperate clique has taken unto itself to spread malicious gossips of an imminent arrest of certain ANC leaders and thus tarnishing the image of the incumbent leadership and worse we, as the ANCYL have it on good authority that they have gone as to plot assassinations. Such lunacy! Such desperation! Conference aside, really are such people deserving to lead at any level? People who breathe such toxicity have absolutely nothing good to offer the ANC except their venomous politics.” The Youth League said that the fact that branches have not nominated their preferred candidate “should be ringing bells as a clear indication of the lack of trust in the majority of ANC branches. “What more humiliation are they inviting unto themselves? The ANCYL is calling upon all delegates to be vigilant of the dirty tricks implemented by these forces

Police pounce on KwaDukuza By Xpress Reporter

CONFISCATED: Skin lighteners seized from various shops in KwaDukuza last week

The KwaDukuza SAPS, KwaDukuza Municipality Traffic and Crime Prevention, Home Affairs, the Health Professional Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and ILembe Environmental Health led a joint operation to put an end on all illegal abortion spots in KwaDukuza and its surrounding areas. This operation was graced by KwaDukuza Municipality Deputy Mayor, Councillor Dolly Govender who expressed her dissatisfaction regarding the number of illegal abortion practitioners. “We have a great challenge, the challenge is not only a threat to us but to the upcoming generation as well. We see pamphlets of abortion every

day in our street, the time has come to be ruthless. The planning of the operation started early this year and there are people who were arrested by private security companies but they were never charged, they just disappeared like smoke. This joint operation will hopefully send a loud message to the criminals that KwaDukuza is not a place for culprits,” said Govender. In a meeting held before the operation, it was stated that the head masters of these illegal abortion are very slick and well connected. KwaDukuza SAPS acknowledged that the issue has to be dealt with but there are procedures that need to be followed in order to gather tangible evidence. Health Professional Council of South Africa said illegal abortion is as deadly as the issue of drugs. Two teams were formed to raid illegal abortion spots in the CBD, each team consists of more than 2 two

police officers. The aim was to catch abortion practitioners in the act and use that as evidence to charge them but the operation was unsuccessful as suspects were not found in their various spot located in town. It was unclear if the suspects were tipped off. After some searching around the CBD, HPCSA noticed that some shops are retailing substances that are harmful and might cause skin cancer. They then confiscated all the substances from various shops. Emphasizing the importance of seizing all the skin lightening substances, HPCSA said, “These skin lighteners contain bad substances including hydroquinone which might lead to skin cancer.” A representative from ILembe Environmental Health said, “This joint operation involves the local municipalities, SAPS, Home Affairs, ILembe Environmental Health and Community Safety to eliminate illegal activities such as abortion, and people posing as doctors. I assure people of KwaDukuza that there will be more operations similar to this one in the near future.”

Everything you need to know about today's strike affiliated to Saftu; NUPSAW, ICTU and Salipswu made a similar Section 77 application to Nedlac and it was granted. Reasons why Saftu is taking to the streets: Labour law amendments: Parliament is currently considering amendments to the Labour Relations Act‚ the Basic Conditions of Employment Act‚ and the new National Minimum Wage Bill. “Various amendments to labour laws will make it incredibly difficult to strike, it's already quite difficult,” said Saftu spokesperson Patrick Craven. He said that the new labour bill making its way through parliament will include more rigorous requirements for pre-strike balloting and that this will be difficult for smaller unions with limited funds. Craven added that the proposed

Thousands of workers are expected to take to the streets today, 25 April 2018 for a one day strike as the South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) plans to make the country “ungovernable”. Saftu, led by dynamic general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi, was formed exactly one year ago. All employees, regardless of whether they are Saftu members or non-unionised may join the strike under the 'no work, no pay principle'. Section 77 of the Labour Relations Act (LRA) allows workers to undertake protected strike action to promote their social and economic interests. Saftu's application to the Section 77 SubCommittee of the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) was unsuccessful but three trade unions

amendments to the LRA will also allow for the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) to intervene in strikes deemed to be lengthy and/or violent. Minimum wage: Saftu objects to the R20 an hour minimum wage agreement, which was set to be implemented on May 1 but has since been postponed due to lengthy parliamentary processes. The Parliamentary portfolio committee on labour said on Friday it will refer the National Minimum Wage Bill back to the labour department to be redrafted so that it includes public input received by the committee. Who will not be part of the general strike? Cosatu - the Congress of South African Trade Unions spokesperson Sizwe Pamla said that while they agree with Saftu

that the R20 per hour minimum R20 per hour. Fedusa - the Federation of wage is inadequate, it's a starting point to improve workers' lives and Unions of South Africa general the figure is what the “South secretary Dennis George said that African economy could give us”. the organisation won't be joining Pamla added that the amendments the strike as the minimum wage to the LRA do not represent a was negotiated with government. dramatic change to the labour He added that 4.5 million workers landscape as they were already will be covered by the R20 per hour provided for in the legislation, they salary and this will be “a huge benefit to the country”. - Fin 24 just weren't enforced. Nactu - the National Council of Trade Unions general secretary Narius Moloto (10 & over) each said that the federation Head & Feet believed that the 10 x 1kg minimum wage is “historic” as it will benefit 40% of workers, currently Contact: Ismail 084 549 6736 or 032 551 1717 earning below

Project named after Chief Luthuli By Xpress Reporter

KwaDukuza Mayor, Ricardo Mthembu has welcomed the naming of the 1.5km bus route in Groutville after the late political activist and Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Chief Albert Luthuli. Mthembu on Tuesday, officiated the construction of a 1.5km Chief Albert Luthuli Farm Road improvement project that will cost Council R5.9 million. Mayor Mthembu said this is

done in honour of the late activist who organized nonviolent campaigns to defy discriminatory laws in South Africa, during apartheid. He said it is imperative and mostly correct that it be named after the struggle stalwart. “Based on the record that Luthuli set in African politics as a leader of a revolutionary movement who fought against the odds of oppression, it is imperative

and correct that this road be reconstructed, in honour of this legend. This road symbolizes the legacy of Chief Luthuli as a proponent of the struggle, noting the fact that Groutville is also his ancestral home of Chief Luthuli, he left an indelible mark in the history of the country,” said Mthembu. INkosi Luthuli was the first African to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1960 for his role in non-violent

struggle against apartheid. He was a South African teacher, politician and a tribal chief, born in 1898 and died on 21 July 1967. He joined mainstream politics in 1944. This is an historic investment that will create jobs, beef-up the local economy and provide easy access to key points of entries in the rural sections of Groutville, which is a growing settlement in KwaDukuza.

He made a statement after conducting an inspection at the two lane stretch that will be surfaced with tar to cover a distance of approximately 1.5km long and 5.5 metres wide. “These are some of the Back to Basics actions that ensures government delivers according to the needs expressed by our communities as part of the

municipality's integrated development plan. The road upgrade will not only contribute towards strengthening our economy and creating jobs but will also promote safety in the strategic entry points of Groutville”, said Mthembu. The project developer has been on site on Monday. The expected timeframe for completion is five months.

“Is SA burning?” With the recent events in SA…Is SA burning? The land and property issue is enough to dry up the sweat of one's hard earned acquisitions. It seems that a civil war is on the cards. Or are we sitting on a time bomb? The toll road issue is atrocious. Consider the amount of taxes civilians have to pay - Fuel, sin tax, toll fees, vat, license fees, income tax, TV license, sugar tax, and the list is never ending. One needs to consider that over 25% of the SA population is unemployed. It seems that crime is out of control. The courts are saturated, so are the prisons. Many would prefer to be in jail because they are well catered for by the justice department. The citizens of this country have a right to inter alia, to safety and protection. Residents are not safe in their homes anymore. Why are the authorities slow to bring out the army to quell the frequent acts of violence? Innocent people are dying on roads by acts of stone throwing. At Mooi River Toll Plaza several trucks were burnt and looted. Consider the loss to companies and the service providers. Visitors from Gauteng to KZN will think twice before venturing on this long trips. Talking about long trips, one has to endure the traffic jams for kilometers on end. Is this acceptable in this so called modern democracy. The bottom line is that the innocent citizens are not deserving of such treatment. Is this the democracy we fought for? Something has to be done... and now. Anand Pillay

UNITED: British journalist and author, Yvonne Ridley (third from left) and KwaDukuza Deputy Mayor, Councillor Dolly Govender (third from right) at the event hosted by the Stanger Khidmat Organisation

By Xpress Reporter

The Stanger Khidmat Organisation (SKO) hosted Sister Yvonne Ridley in KwaDukuza on Thursday, 19 April 2018 as part of the 'Survivor Tour' which focuses on the global issue of rape being used as a weapon of war. Ridley is a British journalist and author who recently returned from the Syrian Border and the Rohingyan refugee camp. The purpose of the tour is to raise funds to help rape victims and turn them into survivors.

“When men play their war games, it's usually the women and children who suffer. The weapons may get more sophisticated, but it's really alarming that this medieval practice is growing,” said Ridley. “We are living in a really damaged world so much so, that in a country like India, every 15 minutes a woman is raped.” Ridley was captured by the Taliban in 2001, and after 11 days in captivity in Afghanistan she converted to Islam after having promised her captors that she

would study Islam if they agreed to release her. In January 2014, Ridley was nominated for the Muslim Woman of the Year award at the British Muslim Awards. KwaDukuza Deputy Mayor, Councillor Dolly Govender was among the women who attended the enlightening event which placed focus on the horrific rape and murder of Asifa Bano, an 8year-old girl from India. The devastating incident sparked a global outcry for justice.

50 Ready to Fill Pastries Eggless (Rectangular & Oval)

R110 Last weekend was Cup semifinals at home and abroad. Interesting and exciting matches were on the cards and so they proved to be. At the Moses Mabhida Stadium, Free State Stars rubbed more salt into the already gaping wounds of Steve Khompela's Kaiser Chiefs by defeating them 2-0. This result leaves this proud club trophy less for the last three years and has caused the coach to tender his resignation. In Pietermaritzburg at the Harry Gwala Stadium, Maritzburg United caused a major upset when they defeated league leaders and favourites Sundowns 3-1 after the visitors were reduced to 10 men halfway through the second half. This win sees the Team of Choice reaching the final of the Nedbank Cup for the first time while for Stars it will be their first cup final after 19 years. This will be played at the Cape Town Stadium next month. In England, the FA Cup finalists will be Manchester United and Chelsea who defeated Tottenham Hotspurs 2-

BEYOND THE TOUCHLINE 1 and Southampton 2-0 respectively at the Wembley Stadium. This will be United's 20th Cup Final while Chelsea were last year's losers to Arsenal. This year's final will also be a battle between the two managers whose relationship with each other is not good even at the best of times. According to Antonio Conte, Chelsea will be underdogs, but this does not sit well with Jose Mourinho who knows that his opposite number is playing mind games. Another intriguing contest is on the cards. Manchester City's genial manager, Pep Guardiola, believes that top footballers can play anywhere on the field in spite of their formal role. Forwards and defenders should be comfortable whether attacking or defending. This is reminiscent of the "total football" played by the Dutch in the 1970s led by the indomitable Johann Cruyff. Here in Stanger,

during the late 50s and early 60s, we had players who could play a similar type of game without giving it a name. Fullbacks Mariemuthoo "Botu" Kisten and Narainsamy Reddy, centre-back Bala Aiyer, and goalkeeper Jugoo Govender were exceptional as defenders but who could attack with venom. Botu and Narain were overlapping full-backs at a time when the role of full-backs was only to defend. Bala was a consistent goal scorer from his central defensive role with his head and his immaculate penalty-taking. Botu also scored goals by joining his forwards and creating the additional attacker. Jugoo as the 'keeper initiated attacks from the back with his accurate distribution which led to many a goal being scored. So 50 years ago total football began in this humble hamlet and was so successful that the aforementioned players were key to

the success of the Lower Tugela Soccer Federation in provincial competitions. While some of our cricketers are plying their trade with much success in the IPL, the balance are twiddling their thumbs wondering whether they will be in employment after 30 April. CSA is still in the midst of finalising the contracts of all professional players in the country. This uncertainty could lead to an exodus of our most talented cricketers to become freelance players in the many lucrative T20 leagues throughout the world as well as county cricket in England. The sector to be affected will be the Proteas who will have to do without some of our best players. Nobody wants to see this happening and making our national team a second-rate side in the world. According to Tony Irish, the CEO of SACA, the organisation that looks after the interests of professional

players, the onus is on CSA to prioritise the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) so that there is a greater degree of certainty and security for the players in the immediate future. The current MOU expires at the end of the month and if not finalised, it could see approximately 230 players unemployed. We appeal to CSA to look at this as a matter of urgency and bring about finality. The future of our cricket is at stake. The last word. Once again violence at a football match in SA has raised its ugly head. This time it was at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday night in the match between Kaiser Chiefs and Free State Stars. Chiefs' fans went on the rampage after their side had lost to Chiefs and attacked the players, the Coach, ground security personnel and all who came into their wake. This type of behaviour is not uncommon

Jayce Singh is a former sports administrator and Patron of the KZNCU

when some of our leading clubs are involved. The responsibility of controlling the supporters lies with the Club and strong action has to be taken to prevent such occurrences which are becoming common. The PSL has imposed heavy fines on defaulting clubs but this has not deterred fans from misbehaving. Clubs themselves will have to take drastic measures and bar unruly fans from attending matches. A football ground has to be a safe place for both spectators and players to be at! Until the next time, have a happy sporting week.
