KDM honours Madiba’s legacy By Xpress Reporter

HANDOVER: KwaDukuza Municipality officials handing over school uniforms to the Gumede family in Thembeni, KwaDukuza on Mandela Day last week

MAYOR: KwaDukuza Municipality Mayor, Councillor Ricardo Mthembu interacting with children during the school uniform handover

KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) joined masses around the world and participated in the Nelson Mandela Centenary celebrations on 18 July 2018. KDM deployed its various departments to engage with Ntshawini residents as part of the Masakhane Campaign which enables government to interact with the community on ground level. The municipality was accompanied by SASSA, Post Office, and the Department of Health. During the event, residents were provided with an opportunity to have health screenings. Speaking to the masses, ward Cllr Thandeka Ngidi alluded that it's imperative for people to grasp opportunities when government comes to the people. “We are here with various structures of government to get deep to the people we are serving. I personally encourage community mobilization, as a community you are required to engage with structures of government that are

present in order to enable government to deliver services efficiently,” said Ngidi. KwaDukuza Municipality then proceeded to Thembeni in ward 11 to hand over school uniforms to a child headed household. The household, which is made up of 5 young children, is expecting to receive a house built by the Department of Human Settlements in KwaDukuza Municipality in partnership with other departments in the municipality. Speaking at the uniform handover, KwaDukuza Municipality Mayor, Councillor Ricardo Mthembu appreciated the selfless efforts by a community member who identified the insensitive conditions that the children were living in. “We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Baba uMkhize who identified the problem and made it his life's mission to help these children. We need people like him who play a significant role in changing people's lives especially during this period as we are celebrating the legacy of Nelson Mandela,” said Mthembu.

SADTU furious over alleged corruption By Xpress Reporter

The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) voiced its dissatisfaction over allegedly corrupt department officials by staging a protest outside the Department of Education in KwaDukuza on Monday morning. SADTU secretary in the region, Nduduzo Ngcobo detailed that they will not relent while teachers are being exploited. “SADTU cannot and will never sit back while corrupt departmental officials abuse their position for sex, post fixing, nepotism etc. We have had enough of these corrupt and incompetent officials. There's no way we can relax while ECD

practitioners which are SADTU members are being told to join a certain trade union in order for them to be employed in mainstream. Progressive principals that have been producing good quality results for years are given fraudulent letters to retire within 14 days upon reaching the age of 65, while educator's employments act, chapter 4, section 10, subsection (2) clearly states that “notwithstanding the provisions of subsection (1), an educator who was in employment immediately before 2 September 1994 in terms of a law repealed by educators' employments Act, 1994 (promulgated under Proclamation No. 138 of 1994),

PROTEST: SADTU members protesting outside the circuit office in KwaDukuza on Monday

shall have the right to retire on or after attaining the retirement age applicable to the educator immediately before the said date,” said Ngcobo. “How can SADTU be silent when qualified educators with more than 2 years of experience are terminated and employing unqualified educators with 7

outstanding modules? Enough is enough, all these three officials must be suspended and investigated,” concluded Ngcobo. SADTU said they will not take the foot off the pedal, they will fight until corruption is eradicated in the department and their demands are met.

Hill Crescent residents up in arms LEAK: Residents of the Hill Crescent area in Oceanview have expressed their frustration over a “massive water leak” which has been an ongoing problem for more than a month. The leak is not only an inconvenience to motorists, but is also causing damage to residents' property. “Water is flowing along the entire road continuously, and this has caused damage to my driveway. Ilembe was contacted numerous times but the problem still persists,” said an irate resident.

Luthuli walk inspires youth

XPress

By Xpress Reporter

Masses of young and old generations participated in the third annual Inkosi Albert Luthuli Legacy walk held on 21 July 2018 in KwaDukuza. Runners who participated in the event took the same route he did, to commemorate his legacy. The marathon was officially opened by KwaDukuza Municipality Deputy Mayor, Cllr Dolly Govender who said this marathon gives us a reflection of what a leader Luthuli was. “As government we strongly believe that sport can deepen unity. When you look at social ills faced by our societies you will realize that young people need to involve themselves in sport. Today we honour Inkosi Albert Luthuli for his commitment of maintaining

Izwi Lothando revives ANC KwaDukuza weighs in on provincial conference Madiba's legacy The African National Congress (ANC) in the General Gizenga Region congratulates the successful sitting of the 08th ANC Conference in KwaZuluNatal and singularly appreciates the election of ANC members from within the region into the ANC Provincial Executive Committee (PEC). The 8th ANC Conference in KwaZulu-Natal that was convened over the weekend resolved to elect Cde Ricardo Mthembu, Cde Phumlile Zulu and Cde Makhosi Zungu as

HAPPINESS: M.S Mthembu with her children together with Izwi Lothando chairperson, Phila Zulu and SASSA officials on Mandela Day

By Xpress Reporter

Last week South Africa celebrated the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela's birth. Madiba, who departed this world back in 2013 remains a global icon for his long fight against white-minority rule and for his message of peace and reconciliation when he was released after 27 years in prison. Izwi Lothando, a non-profit organisation based in KwaDukuza, joined celebrations by trying to better the lives of disadvantaged citizens. The organisation's chairperson, Phila Zulu stated that giving hope to the people is what inspires them to do better as an organisation. “The day started by helping M.S Mthembu, mother of 3

children by getting birth certificates and applying for child support grant. She's been struggling to obtain an ID for the past 24 years after all her documents were burnt to ashes during the violence that took place in Dlangezwa in North of KwaZulu Natal,” elaborated Zulu. “From hearing about Izwi Lothando, Ms Mthembu reported her case, and then the organisation took her matter with both hands and presented it into the right channels. Department of Home Affairs intervened and came up with solutions on how Ms Mthembu can be helped. Today Ms Mthembu and her children have the necessary documents that every South African citizen needs to have. We give

thanks to the Management of KwaDukuza Home Affairs and South Africa's Social Services Agency (SASSA),” said Zulu. After assisting Ms Mthembu, Izwi Lothando then headed to Mbazamo Primary School where the organisation donated a trampoline and a swing for Grade R and Grade 1 children. The organisation concluded its journey of serving people on Madiba Day at Lusizo Day Care Centre where they also donated outfits to the 5 to 6 year olds at the centre. Phila Zulu thanked everyone who participated in this great initiative and urged communities to devote themselves to uplifting others.

additional members in the ANC PEC. “We wish to commend the delegates of the 8th Conference for recognizing leadership in our region and for supporting our position when we lobbied for such elections even ahead of the provincial conference. Joining leaders of such great stature bears testimony to their political contributions and track record in the region. “Their ability to lead the ANC in the province is undoubted and beyond questioning given the

amount of political work, responsibilities and contributions. We believe that the election of the aforementioned comrades is a formidable combination that will help advance the work of the ANC in the province towards a more united and stronger ANC in KZN. May their unwavering commitment to the work of the ANC be impactful as they take up these new responsibilities,” said the ANC General Gizenga Region in a statement.

Bongimfundo Primary School celebrated Mandela Day on Wednesday, 18 July. Learners participated in various activities. There was also the performance of the Mandela Jive. Seen are some of the winners together with organizers, Mr S Sibiya and Miss NT Budula.

Early Childhood Development KZN has an initiative which provides a mobile school on wheels which goes around KZN to schools which need the support. Raksha Singh of Arbour School joined this initiative, making Mandela Day their second journey with the mobile unit. The mobile unit visited Glendale Heights, where many children under the age of six gathered while mums watched over. The children enjoyed many activities lined up for the day such as singing, football, role play and the variety of toys provided by the mobile unit.

expensive lifestyle I was disappointed at the launch of “Thuma Mina” rally which I attended in Groutville when CRM defended Ingonyama Trust at the expense of rural masses, which deserve Title-Deeds as stated in the Freedom Charter. I expected CMR to defend Kgalema Motlanthe Panel. As we celebrate life and times of Nelson Mandela, we must remind the “trio”, we Zulus have no intention to take up arms against a democratic state. We have no quarrel against Kgalema Motlanthe. We are “soldiers of peace and combatants against corruption”. We fully acknowledge our freedom fighters before 1912 who fought in wars of dispossession by against colonialists, amongst those brave like Zulu Kings, Dingane, Cetshwayo, Bambatha are Maqoma, Hintsa, Mphephu, Mzilikazi, Luka Jantjie, Sobhuza to name a few. Overall, CMR has done well to liquidate Zuma legacy but we have many mountains to climb. Before the launch, CMR issued titledeeds to mainly South African Indians in KwaDukuza but at the launch of “Thuma Mina” rally failed to boldly say “I will tell Zulu King, Zuma and Buthelezi that rural masses under Ngonyama Trust will get titledeeds like all South Africans. Land belongs to the people not Zulus. We are a South African province not the Kingdom of the Zulu. How could South African Indians like Month Naicker, Natoo Barbenia, Billy Nair, Ela Gandhi, Fatima Meer, George Naicker, Chotal Motala, Vejay Ramlakan, Phyllis Naidoo, George Sewpersadh and many joined entire country to defeat apartheid if later ANC president will be silent about attempts to revive tribalism in KwaZulu-Natal. Trevor Bonhome, Derrick and Robert McBride, Joe Mmemela, Greta Apelgren, Matthew Le Cordier could not have joined the struggle for the creation of the Kingdom of the Zulu. Dorothy Nyembe got 15 years with Bafana Ngcobo and Themba Dlamini for attempting to recruit Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi clan into MK. They were sent to Buthelezi to deliver a letter from Moses Mabhida. We call our president not to be scared of an imminent war by Zulus, we are not fools to be used to defend stomachs of the King and Zuma. Siyanda Mhlongo KwaDukuza

Thank you On 21 July we had a fire at our residence. The Larkfield community rallied together to help extinguish the fire. We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to everyone who assisted. A special thanks goes out to Aslam Randeree and his family, as well as Philadelphia Temple. We were amazed by the heroic efforts put in by everyone who assisted. Seelan Chetty and family

Dear Editor, Narrative that President Ramaphosa is a “coward” will not be arrested if he is not decisive no matter balance of forces in the ANC and Tripartite Alliance. His dangerous and soft approach on Zulu Tripartite Alliance of King Goodwill Zwelithini, Mangosuthu Gatsha Buthelezi and Jacob Zuma confirms that he wants to treat Zulu tribe as superior tribe. We Zulus, are not going to take up arms to protect the King's milking cow, the Ingonyama Trust in the same way we reject State Capture which turned Duduzani Zuma into a millionaire within seven years. CMR must know, when the apartheid state killed our people in KwaMakhutha, University of Zululand, Mpumalanga, Piet Retief, Boipatong, and Trustfield when our people were killed in trains around Johannesburg and when Chief Shayabantu Zuma created a “no go zone” area for United Democratic Front in Inkandla where Emperor Zuma has a R246m palace. Our people were killed in the Edendale Seven Days war which prompted ANC leaders to summon Walter Sisulu to come down to see how the apartheid state and its surrogates create Zulu on Zulu war. Our King as Zulus did not call any Imbizo to end this brutal war. He dismally failed to emulate Kings Dingane and Cetshwayo. When IFP was losing power over the public purse, the King started to rebel against Chief Buthelezi. Now, the King is going back to his old habits of using power to defend his

of drugs. As a youth club we are working tirelessly to help them and create a drug free environment. Most of the drug users get into this due to peer pressure from societies, therefore we appeal to anyone to intervene and help,” said Mkhize. Speaking on behalf of KwaDukuza Municipality, Mr M. Pitso said that community can play a significant role to help teenage sons or daughters

through a variety of difficult situations. “As a municipality we are working tirelessly to eradicate the existing problem of drug users in our town, but it is imperative to work together with law enforcement to nab drug distributors. The Municipality has identified a house in New Guelderland which can be used as a rehabilitation centre to help this young generation,” said Pitso.

BERG: Taming the Dragon With the threat of a severe cold front and an imminent storm looming, five brave and resilient members of the Smurfs Hiking Club left KwaDukuza just after midnight for an adventure of a lifetime. Armed with expedition and survival gear, medical supplies, rope and heavy backpacks, the team ventured deep into the remote parts of Bushman's Nek in Southern Drakensberg. Having endured steep ascends, low visibility and extreme sub-zero temperatures over three days, the team over-nighted in remote caves at an altitude of 7000 feet above sea level.

Despite the heavy snowfalls that blanketed the landscape, morning summit temperatures as low as minus 9 degrees Celsius, the team pushed ahead and successfully summited a significant peak on the Thumathu Ridge on the KwaZulu Natal/Lesotho border at 7000 feet above sea level. “A special mention must be made of Saiyal Singh who displayed great spirit and character under testing conditions during this winter climb. The Smurfs Hiking Club salutes those who have the will and courage to venture beyond their comfort zone”, said team leader Vimal Mothilal.

W i t h Wo r l d C u p a n d Wimbledon fever (also Sardine!) over, focus shifted to the South African cricket tour to Sri Lanka. And what a disastrous tour it has turned out to be. Prior to their departure for the scenic island of Sri Lanka, the coach and captain of the Proteas informed the cricketing public of SA that the team was well-prepared and ready for the conditions as well as the opposition. They knew weatherwise that it would be hot, humid and sultry but they did not count for the Lankan's bowlers and batsmen being superior to their own. The Proteas were outclassed and outplayed by an outfit that knew its strength and whose batsmen were not fazed by the much-vaunted Proteas' pace attack which was ineffective in both the tests. Beaten in three days in the first test and in four days in the second test, the Proteas were not competitive whatsoever and the team's brain-trust have much to account for. Theunis de Bruyn restored some respectability to the Proteas by scoring a well-constructed century in a good partnership with Temba Bavuma (63) in the second test. The rest of the batsmen seemed to be leaden-footed who just planted their front foot forward and hoped for the best. Very few of them used their feet to unsettle the spinners and they were either bowled, caught by the close-in fielders or plumb in front LBW. No one would have thought that the absence through retirement of AB de Villiers would have such a negative effect on the SA batting order.

Experienced men like Hashim Amla, Faf du Plessis and Dean Elgar failed to play the long innings that they are capable of doing, leaving it to the inexperienced Bavuma and Quinton de Kock to bolster the batting. The tail also failed to wag against the wily SL spinners led by "ol man river" Ranganna Herath. He just seems to go on and on and it's a pity that the series against England will be his last . In a series that was convincingly lost 2-0, one will tend to forget the achievement of the relatively young spinner, Keshav Maharaj, who took 9 - 129 in the first innings, the second best for a SA bowler and the best since re-admission in 1991. Can cricket followers remember Hugh Tayfield who took 9-113 against England at, of all venues, the Wanderers in 1957 ? It enabled SA to win narrowly. Tayfield was known for his immaculate length and accuracy rather than prodigious turn and it enabled him to take wickets on all types of surfaces. Maharaj would do well to follow in his footsteps and concentrate on line, length and flight rather than extreme turn. Therefore, more the mystery that Tabraiz Shamsi was omitted for the second test. The last word. The selection of the Proteas team for the second test against Sri Lanka raised eyebrows when it was announced that Vernon Philander was dropped for a top-order batsman, de Bruyn and Shamsi was omitted for another paceman, Lungi Ngidi. Dale Steyn was still in the team after performing hopelessly

Simply easy The scourge of addicts plunging families into crisis is growing at an alarming rate. Mbalenhle Msomi of Groutville alleges that her brother arrived home, took his father's computer, threatened her with a knife and walked away. in the first test, taking one wicket. Why was he there ? Just to enable him to get that one wicket to Jayce Singh is a former o v e r h a u l sports administrator and Patron of the KZNCU S e a n Pollock's record of 423 ? Surely the SA management had seen the pitch and no way was it going to assist pace. Shamsi was flown back hastily from SA only to be left out to carry the drinks. Were they thinking that they had a pace attack to match that of the unbeatable Windies teams of the 70s and 80s ? The four- pronged pace attack of Holding, Roberts, Garner and Marshall (with Croft) could demolish any team on any surface, be it in the West Indies, England, Australia or on the subcontinent. According to Harold Samuel, former Stangerite and NCB captain, manager and convener of selectors, the team's brain trust must take responsibility for the debacle in Sri Lanka. They owe it to the public that the team does not only represent the cricket fraternity but the whole nation. The psyche of the people has been badly deflated and we are hoping that a better performance will be on display in the coming ODI series that begins next Wednesday (1 August). As for Steyn, send him back to SA and select him against Zimbabwe or Afghanistan or anyone else to enable him to break the record ! Until the next time, have a happy sporting week.

alleges that he was at his house when his neighbour began verbally abusing him. The neighbour approached Rawlins who tried to defend himself. won their pool games to meet Frendz in the second semifinal. All eyes were on Darnall and TVGB to reach the finals and provide an explosive final. Darnall was merciless in their quest to reach yet another final as they slaughtered MOB in straight sets to book their place in the final. TVGB however, did not have it their own way when they came up a resilient Frendz outfit. With the scores levelled at 1-1, it was the sheer determination of TVGB that clinched the final set to set up a repeat of the Easter tournament final. Explosive action can be expected in the final and spectators are urged to make their way to the courts at 8pm to witness this titanic battle. Frendz will play MOB for a podium finish.
