KZN Treasury empowers SMME's in iLembe

OFFICIALS: KZN Treasury hosted the Water and Sanitation Public Private Partnership Summit at the iLembe Auditorium recently

The Provincial Treasury wants to use its public private partnership that supplies water in iLembe District (Government and Siza Water) to boost business for local emerging enterprises. Replicated in other districts, this will feed into the much-needed growth of the economy in KZN. This transpired recently during the Water and Sanitation Public Private Partnership Summit 2019 held in KwaDukuza. The summit was aimed at creating awareness on available opportunities for local SMMEs to participate in a district-wide public private partnership that spans over 20 years. “Realising that local SMMEs were not benefitting from this partnership instead businesses from outside the district were benefitting - we facilitated this summit. We called all stakeholders under one roof to thrash out issues that cause this situation. We want local emerging enterprises to participate in growing the economy. “Throughout engagements in the summit, we have realised that there were bigger issues relating to lack of information, mistrust between business and government, and frustration of some of the SMME members who do not get opportunities to work with government. “The summit succeeded to bring all parties to a common understanding. Now SMMES know what work is out there, and what opportunities are available for them to do business. We will have further engagements in future to assess the strides that we have made,” said KZN Provincial Treasury PPP Unit

Chief Director, Ms Thandiswa Kankqu. ILembe District Municipal Manager Jeff Khumalo was enthused by the summit. “This summit was quite informative for the SMMEs. It was quite encouraging when speakers made presentations that show available opportunities to make business within the district. “Our municipality has also made presentations and highlighted areas of business for SMMES. Observation has been made that in some of the smaller sectors like women and people living with disabilities, very few has benefitted in terms of procurement. Going forward, the district will use a targeted approach to benefit these sectors as well. “We have received a directive from the District Mayor to have such SMMEs summit in all our local municipalities where opportunities would be openly presented to SMMEs,” said Khumalo. Senior Project Advisor, Mr Sithembiso Mkhwanazi advised the emerging business people to be disciplined when they get tenders so that they build their reputation. “Be disciplined. Stay on budget. Work hard and ensure that you produce quality service for your client,” he said.

The highly anticipated mass meeting organised by Human Rights Association (KZN292) held on Thursday 19 September 2019, saw a large number of KwaDukuza residents flock to Stanger Manor Hall to listen attentively and also raise their concerns to the organisation with regards to alleged poor service delivery from ILembe District Municipality and KwaDukuza Municipality. The main objective of the engagement was to discuss

Chairperson of the Human Rights Organisation Cyril Pandaram stated that the organisation is the voice of the voiceless and they will do everything in their power to ensure leaders are held accountable and needs of the people are attended to. Cyril further took a dig at ILembe District Municipality, alleging that the municipality can hardly attend to the grievances of the community. “ILembe District Municipality is one of the worst municipalities, and it takes them almost 6 months to repair damaged water pipes. As members of the community we never asked for smart meters, prepaid meters were excellent,” added Cyril. Two suggestions by the Human Rights Organisation (KZN292) received public unanimity - to dump refuse in front, inside and in the street of the Municipal Buildings in Chief Albert Luthuli Street and the removal of the cashiers at the Umvoti Toll to allow motorists to go through without paying.

Hundreds have received training and found employment. “The Department of Human Settlements and the Flanders Government identified the Society as a suitable recipient of funding for a community care project. Twenty homes were allocated to the Society to provide accommodation for 120 children affected or infected by AIDS. The homes also provide accommodation for children who have been abandoned or removed from their parents. We also initiated a Safe House Facility for children in need of care and protection whilst social workers conducted investigations. Praveen Sham has served on the KZN Provincial Board of Child Welfare South Africa and has chaired the Board. He was also a member of the Executive Committee of the National Board of Child Welfare South Africa.

In a bid to boost the shrinking economy, KwaDukuza Municipality partnered with Coca-Cola to launch the BIZNIZ in a Box youth programme on 18 September 2019. The programme aims to put young people at the forefront of economic development. This great initiative will boost entrepreneurship and employment in the community and will also provide young people with valuable skills on how to run their own business. Opening the launch of the programme, KwaDukuza Municipality Acting Mayor Cllr Dolly Govender said that youth must grab opportunities of this magnitude when they arise. “We urge the young people of KwaDukuza and its surroundings to take charge of their lives. Youth are the future, this is a great opportunity for them,” said Govender. According to Coca-Cola, this programme will improve the economy, curb the alarming rate of unemployment, and also convert youth from job seekers to job creators.

On Monday 23 September 2019 Medical Rescue units responded to a taxi related shooting in Shakaskraal where a taxi owner of Dolphin Coast Taxi Association was shot and killed. According to IPSS Medical Rescue the taxi owner was deceased at the scene. “One person, taxi member, is deceased on the scene and we treated his bodyguards,” said IPSS Medical Rescue. Teddies 'Shake-a-Paw' Day at Manor Primary North Coast Primary learners excel WELL DONE: North Coast Primary School held their 'Show and Tell' contest recently. Seen are Grade R learners, Ismail Hajaree, Trent Ramdin and Ashteel Ramnarain The Girl Guides Movement of South Africa observed Shake-a-Paw (Teddies Enrolment) Day at Manor Primary School last week. These delightful little Teddies (Grades 1 and 2) pledged their allegiance to the Guiding Movement when they recited the Teddy promise and pledge. Mrs Saroj Reddy, the Teddies instructor has faithfully dedicated 24 years to the Guiding Movement of South Africa. Stanger Manor Primary is extremely indebted to her for the sterling work she does to promote Guiding at their school. Mrs Benita Naidoo, her assistant is also commended for her time and sacrifice. Honorary life member, Mrs Marge Reddy, who served for 45 long years, was present to induct the Teddies. Parents and wellwishers were in attendance.
