Stanger Manor Secondary School continues to epitomize academic excellence in KwaDukuza, producing sterling matric results year in and year out. In the latest matric results episode (which was for the Matric Class of 2021), this outstanding learning institution yet again amazed many by producing the top two achievers in the entire iLembe District. The best matric achiever for the 2021 academic year in the District was Darshan Bramdev, who scored an impressive seven distinctions, followed closely by his schoolmate, Neil Mothilall, also with seven distinctions. This pair of fine young minds are not yet done with empowering themselves academically, as they

are both headed for the Western Cape to pursue tertiary studies. Darshan will be enrolling for a degree in actuarial science through the University of Stellenbosch, while Neil is joining the University of Cape Town, to read medicine. The two boys were lauded lavishly at the iLembe District Matric Results presentation ceremony held in Stanger Secondary School on Friday last week. Meanwhile, other schools elsewhere in the District were also determined to notch up stellar performances this time around, with the third best performer in the District coming from Amaphuphesizwe Secondary School, located at Umphumulo

Mission, in Maphumulo. This particular matriculant, Thando Ngubane, waltzed home with five distinctions. Our Lady of the Rosary Secondary School, which is located at Nodwengu area in Ndwedwe, also made a mark for itself, producing the fourth best performer in the name of Simthandile Phila, who delivered six distinctions, and was the only girl in the top five. Not to be outdone, Tugela Secondary School in Mandeni brought in Lindokuhle Mbonambi, who took the 5th spot with his five distinctions. All the five top achievers were celebrated in the event, which was linked via satellite connection, to the provincial event which was held at the prestigious Anton Lembede Maths Science and Technology Academy, situated in La Mercy. Meanwhile, the Champion MEC for iLembe District, Transport and Community Safety MEC Peggy Nkonyeni has congratulated the District on its performance, singling out the District management led by Dr Musawenkosi Madondo, and the learners and educators. “Ilembe District attracts a lot of tourists. We need to pay attention to those subjects that will promote tourism and (boost) the economy of this District,” MEC Nkonyeni stated.

Ambitious target for iLembe's Matric Class of 2022

Continued from Page 1 KZN, after getting a 75.7% pass rate. This was a drop from the 2020 results which stood at 76.9%. ILembe District Director in the Department of Education, Dr Musawenkosi Madondo, said on Friday that the District had set itself an ambitious target for the Year 2022, to achieve nothing less than 80%. At the circuit level, the District was led by the Nsuze Circuit, which achieved 90.33%, followed by Balcomb Hills Circuit with its 89.36%. In the 3rd place was Umhlali Circuit which obtained 83%. Umhlali was followed in the 4th position by Ntunjambili Circuit. Finishing off the top five circuits was Ozwathini Circuit with an inspiriting performance that produced an 81.82% pass rate. “We reiterate that the class of 2021 is distinctive and remarkable because it proved to be the tough battalion that went through the pain, trauma, and destruction of the July

2021 inferno and unrest. It was a sad and tragic moment in the history of our country and province where no less than 144 learning centres were damaged at a time where the educational budget had been slashed by R6.3 billion as part of cost containment measures. “The vandalising and targeting of schools to steal food and equipment had been on the rise with the advent of COVID-19 in 2020, and so, the July 2021 civil unrest only worsened the situation and enabled criminals to loot the future of our children. Because of the unrest, all plans for the KZN winter holiday intervention programme had to be cancelled. “It is in this regard that we truly honour the class of 2021 because we cannot think of a group that went through such disturbances and dislocation in post-apartheid South Africa. “On this day, we also wish to pay tribute to the heroes and heroines behind our great performance for 2021. To all our teachers who never

spare themselves under extremely trying circumstances, we salute you for your commitment to the success and future of our children,” stated premier Zikalala. Notably, no school in KZN got 0%, and the province has 145 schools that achieved 100%. The province also delivered the highest number of distinctions in the country, which came in at 61 887 distinctions. “We urge communities to take a keen interest in the future of their children. Let us join hands and work with community policing forums to protect school assets and buildings from vandalism, theft and destruction. “We call on our teachers to be on time in class and to focus on teaching each day. Without our committed teachers, we cannot have any hope of improving the lives of the people of KwaZuluNatal, and so we enjoin them to enthuse, teach, and inspire our learners,” the premier concluded.

in force to manage the Covid19 pandemic. Last week President Cyril Ramaphosa have the strongest hint yet that talks were underway behind the

scenes to explore ways to lift the State of National Disaster amid the declining Covid-19 infection levels in the country. However a few days later health minister Dr Joe

Phaahla dashed hopes in this regard when he predicted that the 5th wave of the pandemic could arrive mid to end May, or sooner. Speaking in a TV interview, Minister Phaahla said the expected 5th wave would likely be worsened by the cold weather and the flu season. “If there is no variant of serious concern very soon, we definitely would expect a wave somewhere around May, when winter starts. That's when people start to congregate indoors because of the cold. Disaster, or bring it to an end in favour of alternative methods to manage the pandemic. “We are examining how best we should handle the state of disaster in this period where the infections have tapered down and to see the efficacy of using the State of Disaster legislation or utilising other measures. “The National Coronavirus Command Council is examining exactly that to see whether we can use health protocols, health regulations to move forward in our management of this pandemic,” said Ramaphosa. The president has once again defended the implementation of the State of National Disaster, which came into effect in March 2020. He said while many have argued, with some degree of merit, against the use of the State of Disaster, Ramaphosa said government had “managed the process rather well”. “Of course, there is a good argument to be put forward that now that we are where we are, should we not examine and look at other methods [or] other instruments that can be utilised,” he said.

Malvern veterans thrashed by iLembe The iLembe Veterans cricket team were at their super best when they trounced Malvern Veterans by 66 runs in their home ground in Malvern Park this past Sunday in a 20 over game. iLembe batted first and posted a formidable score in their 20 overs. They scored 115/4. The top batsmen were A. Maharaj (31), M. Mather (21), B. Ismail (19) and S.P. Maharaj (13). Malvern's bowlers bowled well with best bowlers

being R. Kinsey (2/9 in 4), R. Govender (1/27 in 4 and M. Richman (1/28 in 4) In reply, iLembe bowlers mesmerised their opponents with quality and a devastating spell of swing and accuracy, especially from A. Mohammed who posted figures of 6/4 after 4 overs. Aboo Ismail showed age is just a number spinning a web around the Malvern batsmen and he ended up with figures of 3/8 in his four over spell. They bowled out Malvern for a paltry 49 runs and comfortably won by 66 runs.

India's cricket pundits on Monday called for changes in the team after South Africa's one-day series whitewash following Virat Kohli's exit as skipper. India lost their third and final ODI by four runs in Cape Town to end a disappointing tour that also

saw the tourists lose the Test series 2-1. Quinton de Kock's 124 set up a tense win in the final 50-over match, which followed two emphatic victories for the hosts. KL Rahul captained the ODI side in the absence of white-

ball leader Rohit Sharma, who missed out due to injury. Kohli, who quit as Test skipper after the South Africa series loss, was the top scorer with 65. Deepak Chahar, a pace bowler who bats in the middle order, hit a gritty 54 in India's chase of 288 but got out with the team needing 10 runs to win, and the remaining two batters soon departed. "What's lacking about this particular Indian outfit is the batters that they have in the team, none of them chip in with three-four overs of bowling," former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar told. “That's got to be the quest for India with their 50-overs team. If they can't find an

obvious sixth bowling option...you have got (to have) pure batters who walk in to the team and can chip in with some bowling." Former captain Sunil Gavaskar had backed Chahar's inclusion in the XI after the first two losses, saying veteran fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who went wicketless in two matches and gave away too many runs, has lost his sting. Gavaskar had also told TV channel India Today that captain Rahul "had run out of ideas" during opposition partnerships in the first two ODIs. But cricketer-turnedcommentator Aakash Chopra said the losses could help the team reinvent itself. "India's white-ball cricket template needs a makeover... this could very well be the beginning of the new approach.”

Proteas pooled alongside India, Pakistan for 2022 T20 World Cup The Proteas have been drawn alongside India, Pakistan and Bangladesh in Group 2 for the 2022 T20 World Cup to be hosted in Australia. The fixture list for the event was released last Friday, with the draw for the First Round and Super 12 groups also confirmed. Group 1 will comprise hosts and defending champions Australia, England, New Zealand and Afghanistan. SUPER 12 The Super 12 will start in Sydney with a meeting between the two finalists from the 2021 T20 World Cup, Australia and New Zealand, squaring off on 22 October. India and Pakistan are scheduled to meet at the MCG in Melbourne on 23 October in what will be one of the most hotly-anticipated matches of the tournament. South Africa's opening match is against a yet-

to-be determined qualifier (Group B winner) in Hobart on 24 October. The Proteas' second match is against Bangladesh in Sydney on 27 October; India in Perth on 30 October; Pakistan in Sydney on 3 November; before facing another qualifier (Group A runner up) in Adelaide on 6 November. The First Round The tournament will begin with a sixday group stage to determine the final four teams to qualify for the Super 12. Sri Lanka and Namibia will be joined by two further qualifiers in Group A, with the West Indies and Scotland drawn together alongside two additional teams from the

IFP says “regulate the employment of foreign nationals” By Xpress Reporter

The Inkatha Freedom Party has submitted a private Members Bill to Parliament to regulate the employment of foreign nationals in ALL sectors - not just restaurants. The IFP says the alarmingly high rate of unemployed South Africans and the high representation of foreign nationals employed particularly in the unskilled occupational level is a serious concern. “The commission for employment equity has also noted in its 21st annual report (2020-2021 annual report), the preference and high representation of foreign nationals at certain other occupational levels in sectors such as the Mining and Quarrying sector, where foreign nationals represent 12,4% of the workforce at the semi-skilled occupational level. With due regard to the Promotion of Equity and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act, 200 (Act No. 4 of 2000), there should be deliberate attempt by the State to conduct the increasing preference by certain sectors in the workforce to employ foreign nationals over South Africans,” said IFP “Moreover, the perception by South Africans citizens that foreign nations are “taking their jobs”, exacerbates xenophobia. Therefore it is imperative to regulate the employment of foreign nationals in the Republic, in order to stem the narrative that the ratio of job opportunities between foreign nationals and South Africans are skewed towards foreign nationals”, added the IFP. This call was hugely welcomed by most South Africans on social media, many indicating that this is the strategy the government need to work in order to better the lives of ordinary South Africans and help minimize the increasing numbers of crime in the country. “I do hope that since your party & others are in parliament, you will push the ruling party ANC which has around a 230 seats majority to implement the immigration act, provide resources to conduct audits on illegally acquired visas, IDs,” said one Twitter user. The objectives of this bill submitted by the IFP, is to amend the Employment Services Act, 2014 (Act No. 4 of 2014), (principal act), with the intention to regulate the recruitment of foreign nationals in certain economic sectors and to strengthen the current regulatory framework regarding the recruitment of foreign nationals in the republic. The Bill amends the principal Act to ensure that when recruiting potential employees, an employer must confirm that there are suitable South Africans citizens that can be employed in that position, prior to recruiting a foreign national.

Global Qualifier in Group B. The qualifying stage will consist of daily doubleheaders, held on alternate days at Hobart's Bellerive Oval and Geelong's Kardinia Park, with all Group A matches at the latter venue and all Group B

matches held in the Tasmanian city. The winner of Group A and runner-up of Group B will join Group 1 in the Super 12 stage, with Group B's winners and the second-placed team in Group A heading into Group 2.

Knockout Stages The Sydney Cricket Ground will host the first semi-final on November 9 while the second last-four clash will be held at the Adelaide Oval. The final will be played at the MCG on November 13 under lights.

Australia had been due to host the T20 World Cup in 2020 but it was delayed two years because of the coronavirus pandemic with India retaining the 2021 edition - though that edition had to be shifted to Dubai because of Covid.
