The President also delivered a keynote address on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the death of Luthuli, who mysteriously passed away on 21 July 1967. Soon after laying a wreath on Luthuli's grave, the president delivered a speech on the life and times of the former ANC President at Groutville Market G r o u n d s a n d questioned a report issued on his passing. “On this day 50 years ago, our country lost one of its most illustrious sons and Africa's first Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Chief Albert Luthuli, under mysterious circumstances. Security official arrested for corruption

Hospice thanks Woolworths

By Xpress Reporter

A security official at the KwaDukuza Magistrate's Court has allegedly been arrested and charged for fraud and corruption. It is alleged that bail was granted to the security official who still retained his post at court. Staff members at court have spoken to the Xpress Times on the condition of anonymity, and expressed their concern with regard to the accused still being on duty. “Considering that he has been charged for corruption, people around here are uneasy about the fact that he is still on site,” said a concerned employee. KwaDukuza Magistrate's Court Manager, Nishi Lalbahadur, declined to comment on the matter, citing that it is the management of Tshedza Protective Services that should be contacted as the accused is their employee. Tshedza Protective Services said that the security official is only posted temporarily at court. “This post is temporary because a hearing is scheduled to be held this Friday.” Newsflash After the Xpress Times contacted the Supervisor of the security company on Tuesday, 25 July 2017, the security official was replaced Mini Facial

I have been waiting for payment since February 2017 and nothing has happened yet.” The Supervisor at the Department of Labour in KwaDukuza, Ms Gumede, declined to comment on the issue. “I deal with so many people so I cannot comment on the matter until I look into it.”

A disgruntled KwaDukuza resident has expressed her frustration with the Department of Labour as she has not received her last UIF payment after 5 months of waiting. Despite numerous visits and telephone calls made to the UIF Office, the disappointed woman claims that she has been met with countless excuses. “On the 6th of February 2017 I went to the UIF Office to sign for my last payment. I was told that I would receive payment within 7

to 10 days. Two weeks had passed and I received no payment. I phoned the office and was told that they needed to send an email to payroll,” she said. She alleges that another staff member at the office eventually checked on the system and she was told that “the money is there.” “I was asked to come in and fill in another form. A week later, I phoned to check on the progress and I was told that the paperwork was sent to Durban and only they can do the processing as the Stanger branch no longer does it.

Man killed on Manor highway

Mandeni Mayor lends a helping hand Mandeni Municipality Mayor, Councillor Sphesihle Zulu commemorated Mandela Day by donating groceries to the needy elderly locals of Mandeni. To honor the tremendous role that was played by the first democratic president of South Africa, the late Dr Nelson Mandela, the Mayor visited the Ngqulunga family in ward 4 (Hlomendlini area), the Gumede family in ward 5, and the Zuma family in ward 13. “As members of the ANC we were taught to use 18 July as the

day to give to the needy, as the sign of commemorating the life of our great leader and our former president Nelson Mandela, as we all know that he passed away on the 18th of July. It is the culture that we need to follow to cater for the people next to us,” said Zulu. He acknowledged the role played by the ward councilor, Sipho Magwaza, who gathered comrades to do cleaning for Nqulunga family. “What you have done comrades is appreciable, it is good to appreciate as we all know that

people in the political arena do not appreciate but they only criticize.” On behalf of the family, Mr Mkhipheni Ngqulunga said he is thankful for the Mayoral visit and donations. “I did not expect that you can pay a visit here. I will be failing my duty if I do not also thank the local people who decided to leave their daily responsibilities and decide to come and clean my premises,” he said. Ngqulunga extended his thanks to Cllr Sipho Magwaza.

By Xpress Reporter

An elderly man was struck and killed by a car on the R74 near the Stanger Manor traffic light intersection on Wednesday, 19 July 2017. The accident happened at around 08h00am. Medical rescue teams rushed to the scene but the man had succumbed to his injuries and died instantly. According to KwaDukuza SAPS

spokesperson, Johannes Khoza, it is alleged that the man was crossing the road when he was knocked by the car. “I humble myself to all pedestrians, please use the overhead bridges in order to avoid motor vehicle accidents with or without fatalities,” said Khoza. Following the incident, a case of culpable homicide has been opened at KwaDukuza SAPS.

ANC KwaDukuza ready for regional conference

COMRADES: Current ANC Greater KwaDukuza Region top five

By Xpress Reporter

The African National Congress under Greater

KwaDukuza Region says it is ready to host the Regional Elections to decide who will

lead the party. Speaking to the Xpress Times, Regional Secretary, Thabani Mdlalose

mentioned that all delegates are geared up and ready to elect their next chairperson. “There are no traces of violence within delegates, they are all ready and are on speaking terms. We are just waiting for confirmation from the province whether to proceed with the elections or hold back for now, other than that all is well,” said Mdlalose. When asked who the frontrunners for the top post are, Mdlalose said only after all the branches have filled and submitted nomination

forms will they be able to know. “For now there are frontrunners, we are still waiting for branches to submit nomination forms, from then on we can be in a better position to disclose who will compete in the elections.” The regional elections are expected to be staged in August. Currently, Ricardo Mthembu occupies the position of Chairperson under ANC Greater KwaDukuza Region. Furthermore, Mdlalose

also mentioned that by September all the branches under Greater KwaDukuza Region will be ready to announce who they want to see leading the ANC nationally. The regional executive committee of the ANC Greater KwaDukuza Region is currently as follows: Regional Chairperson: Ricardo Mthembu, deputy chairperson: Maxwell Chili, Secretary: Thabani Mdlalose, deputy secretary: Zibuyile Khuzwayo and Treasurer: Thulani Ntuli.

Standing together against crime DRIVEN: Seen are women of Lotus Park, Isipingo, who are part of an all-women community policing forum called the Lotus Park Ladies Sub-Forum

By Xpress Reporter

In recent months, the community of KwaDukuza has felt the impact of high crime rates as there have been numerous reports of armed robberies, hijackings as well as incidents of mugging. Crime is a prominent issue in the community and residents are encouraged to rally together by organizing watch-groups and forums to curb the problem. With Women's Month fast approaching, ladies are encouraged to unite in the fight against crime and take a stand against the escalating violence in our community. KwaDukuza women are also urged to be vigilant following the recent scourge of crime in the CBD and surrounding areas. The Lotus Park Ladies Sub-Forum in Isipingo is a shining example of c o m m u n i t y involvement. The allwomen community policing forum was formed by Isipingo grandmother, Zarina Assan, who was tired of her community constantly being targeted by armed robbers and hijackers. Apart from keeping alert during the day, the women also keep watch and patrol the streets in their area.

Robbers strike at Quick Service By Xpress Reporter

On Friday, 21 July 2017 five men robbed Quick Service in KwaDukuza Central Business District and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash and a Samsung phone worth R2500. According to KwaDukuza SAPS spokesperson Johannes Khoza it is alleged by the complainant that she was busy at the said place when she was approached by five males inside the shop. “Suspects pulled out a firearm and took her son in-law to the back while others were demanding money. The suspects took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled. A Samsung worth R2500 was also taken,” said Khoza. A case of business robbery has since been opened at KwaDukuza SAPS. “I humbly appeal to the community to come forward with any information that may lead to the arrest of the perpetrators,” concluded Khoza.

Justice must prevail After reading an article on News24 on 16th July 2017, I was quite disturbed to learn of an irregular contract that was awarded in 2012 in the Johannesburg region. It seems quiet 'regular' these days for contracts worth millions to be awarded to certain companies without the proper procedures being followed. To my surprise the benefactor of the contract was Edison Power Group owned by Mr Vivian Reddy, who has also been awarded the tender for the development of the new King Shaka Mall in KwaDukuza . The development of the mall and the procedures followed in the awarding of the tender has attracted a lot of negative attention from members of the community and many other concerned groups. Many questions and thoughts will now possibly be a hot topic and it maybe the Concerned Citizens Group may have had some valid points in their recent battle against this major project. My personal view is now marred with a possibility that this particular tender could have also been awarded irregularly by the KwaDukuza Municipality. Could this be the modus operandi of Mr Vivian Reddy? The citizens of KwaDukuza must no longer be silent. The question in matter is not what is being built but in how our municipality is doing business with companies that are benefiting themselves the most. If the upliftment of the community and job creation was the main aim of the mall, there would be no need to by-pass procedures. The residents must stand together to fight and uproot the corruption within our local municipality. Our voices must be heard and justice must prevail. The KwaDukuza municipality together with the councillors that were voted in by the people of KwaDukuza must be accountable to the community! Concerned Resident Vishaam Singh

It is sad that the consumer has to face the brunt of the financial woes of iLembe Municipality. After the Municipal Elections of August 2016, the Mayor stated that no new vehicles will be bought for the councilors and himself but sadly this was set aside and new vehicles were bought. Can you imagine a business property valued at five million rand (R5m) has to fork out more than R10 000 per month for sewer alone even if the toilets were not flushed. Thanks to the generosity of the municipality they have decided to peg the value of properties at five million rand or else a property valued at R21m the sewer charges would be over R48 000 per month. The Mayor wants to fix the financial situation at iLembe but this should not be done at the detriment of the consumers. He states that those who can afford must pay. What about those that cannot afford? Have they got an alternative? You just have to find the money. As long as you are not registered as an indigent you just have to pay. The Mayor states that a house valued at a million rand will pay a lower tariff under the valuation system than the water based system. This does not apply in all cases. Taking this example, if there is a couple living in this house and use 15kl of water for sewer, they will be paying R278.96 compared to R655.50 with the valuation method. This is more than double. The Mayor stated, “one of iLembe's main problems was the low revenue collection rate.” This is definitely iLembe's problem, not the consumer. You have a task at hand for which the staff is well compensated. Seventy five million rand was lost to illegal water (not electricity as mentioned) connections in the previous financial year. What has the Mayor done about this? Next month will be one year since the Mayor is at the helm of iLembe. Personally, I feel iLembe's financial woes will continue to suffer at the spiraling cost of services. I wish the Mayor will find a way forward as he is engaging with the iLembe Task Team. The Mayor definitely knows where the problem is and as long as this problem continues, no solution will be found. Concerned citizen

Dangerous anger Nkosikhona Guma (24) alleges he and his friend were walking home at about 11h30pm after having a few drinks. They were followed by two youths who began attacking them for no reason. One of them stabbed Guma in the chest with a sharp object and they both fled. Police managed to trace the culprit who is a taxi conductor and apprehended him a month after the incident. Kwazi Dlamini (24) has been remanded in custody pending a bail consideration. In broad daylight Heresh Naidoo alleges that he locked his premises and at about midday noticed his garage door was open and tyres amongst other items were missing. He did not report the incident and made inquiries. One person who purchased a vacuum cleaner came forward and implicated an Etete youth who works for a local graphic outlet in the CBD. Naidoo tracked down the youth and handed him over to the police. Rowan Naicker (26) has been remanded in custody pending a bail consideration.

Whom to trust Employing young staff with teenagers is proving to be a headache for some employers. In the latest incident, a 23-year old cleaner from a local school has been charged with rape. According to the grandmother of a 14-year old Gledhow girl the child did not return home recently. After interrogating her, she finally revealed that she spent the night with her boyfriend. It emerged from a doctor's report that the girl is involved in a sexual relationship with the man. KwaDukuza's Ushaka Mall will come under the hammer on 23 August 2017 at 12h00pm following a decision by the property owners to consolidate their assets. The mall currently grosses well over R7 million annually with operating expenses excluded. Speaking to a national publication, codirector of Nexus Property Group, Greg Nafte said the mall is a secure asset with guaranteed returns due to its strong tenant mix and further added that, “In terms of obtaining finance for a property of this stature, it becomes a lot easier to get funding from banks when you're able to show them that large retail chains are invested in the property too. The mall will also always be a valuable asset as it services the local community's needs.” Nafte further stated that, “the mall boasts an erf size of 2,1128 hectares with a gross lettable area of around 8 700sqm. The mall is currently 95% occupied and includes a strong mix of stable tenants including CashBuild, Clicks, Telkom, Crazy Store and Cell C as well as anchor tenant, Pick n Pay, who have a lease in place until 2026, after which there will be three options to extend for five-year periods.”, said Nafte before concluding by saying that an auction was deemed the best method as it brings finality to sale and gives all prospective buyers a fair chance to submit their bids.

iLembe hosts successful awards evening iLembe and District Cricket Union hosted a successful Annual General Meeting and Awards Evening last Friday at the Quartz Conference Centre. At the awards presentation, clubs and individuals were recognised for their achievements for the 2016/17 season. At the function, President of IDCU, Abboo Ismail said he was disappointed at the last AGM when he announced that the national team, Proteas were ranked 6th amongst the test playing nations. He said that after enjoying a good season of test cricket, Proteas now find themselves ranked 2nd whilst they enjoy the honour of being the number one ranked ODI team. He added that he was disheartened with their premature exit from the

Champions trophy a few months ago failing to reach the knockout stage. He continued saying that the Union was represented by iLembe and Dawnheights in the KZN Cricket Union Challenge League Stream I. Unfortunately, Dawnheights were relegated to Stream to with iLembe performing ordinarily despite progression to the T20 semifinal. He appealed to clubs to send their potential players to play at a higher level and to represent the Union. He congratulated the various clubs that won the various leagues but was disappointed with the response from schools in the high and primary school leagues. He encouraged clubs of getting involved in getting schools to play and to groom youngsters to achieve their

in the 20-over A league with Magnum claiming the B league and Dawnheights the U16 league. The Union also hosted a successful double wicket tournament. All these teams received team awards. In the individual achievement awards, all

potential. Ismail added that with Double Ring Trading taking over the Country Club ground was done albeit not to the expectations and requirements of the Union he added. The rivalry between Grove End I and Randsons will continue tomorrow (Thursday) when they clash in the final of the Ralph Reuben Memorial knockout tournament payed under the KwaDukuza Volleyball Association at the Association courts. This is a repeat of the 2016 final which was won by Grove End and they are favourites to retain it. With the weather playing havoc a fortnight ago, the quarter finals and semifinals were played on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively last week. In the quarter final, Randsons were made to sweat in their narrow 25-22, 26-24 victory against a determined KSST squad. Grove End I romped home 25-17, 25-18 against their compatriots Grove End II whilst Sunbrook cruised to a 25-13, 25-16 win over Frendz. Darnall United brushed past Manor Old Boys 25-12, 25-19. Randsons relatively cruised past Sunbrook in their semi-final clash on Thursday winning 25-16, 25-19 to book a place in the final. Reigning champions Grove End were made to sweat in their semi-final clash against Darnall, late

Grove End/Randsons clash in Ralph Reuben Memorial final Café Residentia Reuben's team. Grove End cruised to a 2517 win the first set. Darnall came out in the second set like a team possessed. They mesmorised Grove End 25-16 to level the set scores 1-1 and push the game into the decisive 3rd set. With a vociferous crowd behind them, Darnall threatened to cause the major upset of the century when they matched Grove End in all departments, much to the amazement of the huge crowd. However, they lacked BMT (big match temperament) as they succumbed 13-15 to Grove End. Darnall will be hoping for a podium finish when they take on rivals Sunbrook in the play-off with Randsons hoping to cause an upset by wrestling the title away from Grove End in the

final.
