DEDICATED: Members of various community safety services that were honoured by the Mayor for their selfless dedication to the safety of people in and around Continued from page 1 urged the police officers to down and 831 suspects were KwaDukuza

and ensure safety through cooperation between KwaDukuza TRT, SAPS and private security companies,” said Chirwa. The mayor also took to the podium to deliver a keynote address. “We need to continue and mobilize community members so that we can squeeze the space for criminals. The work that you put in in making our town safe is in line with our vision of making this town a city. I say this because nobody would want to invest in a town where criminals are in charge” said the first citizen of KwaDukuza while addressing the members of different community safety services. Mthembu also

respect their uniforms and respect the people put in charge to lead them. “Respect the uniforms and understand the responsibility that comes with it. It is now evident that through our partnerships, we are turning the tide against violent crimes and drinking and driving due to the reported statistics following the festive season. I have said time and again that we have placed a high priority on domestic violence and violent crimes. The partnerships in law enforcement agencies holds true of this”. The statistics revealed that during the festive season, 81 illegal firearms were seized, 218 illegal liquor outlets were closed

arrested for drug possession. In total 5014 suspects were arrested on various charges. Among those who received awards were private security companies such as, ALFA Security, K9 Security, HAWKS, Z2 and G4S. Government departments that were awarded include, KwaDukuza Fire and Emergency Service, KZN Community Safety, RTI Groutville and KwaDukuza TRT. Individuals that were honoured included SAPS KwaDukuza station commander Brigadier Sbongile Mhlongo, Cecil Veramuthu and iLembe Cluster Commander, Major General Mandlenkosi Chirwa.

Joint operations and hard work from KwaDukuza crime prevention services and KwaDukuza SAPS together with private security companies are yielding positive results. In the course of last week more than a handful of crimes have been either prevented or dealt with successfully. Police in Melville were performing a routine check on motor vehicles passing in the R102 when they stopped a motor vehicle and discovered a gun with

live ammunition. On 14 January 2017, iLembe Cluster task team together with Umhlali K9, Empangeni POP and KwaDukuza CIG conducted an intelligence driven operation in Emankwanyaneni area, Sundumbili, which led to seizing of one 308 rifle with 14 live rounds and the arrest of Msawenkosi Ndwandwe on charges of alleged possession of unlicensed firearm. On Sunday, 22 January 2017, another joint operation was held by SAPS units, Umhlali task team

The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) Greater KwaDukuza Region hosted a media briefing at the regional office on Monday, 23 January 2017. Among the issues discussed were the latest engagements with local farmers. “Guided by its 5th Congress Resolutions, the ANC Youth League in the Greater KwaDukuza Region will be meeting with the progressive and patriotic farmers from its locale to discuss possible solutions on how young people of this region can benefit in agriculture through partnerships, supply of goods and services,” said Regional Secretary, Musa Zondi. He added that this is an initiative to ensure that young people become roleplayers in the economy, particularly the agricultural sector, in this region. “As the ANCYL we strongly believe that young emerging and aspirant farmers should be given opportunities to participate in the economy mainstreams to ensure that we reduce inequality, unemployment and poverty in our region and farming as one of the strategic sectors wherein this can be achieved.”

Learners' safety a priority in Ward 16

HEROES: Members of KwaDukuza Traffic and Crime prevention team, with Operation Hlokomela representatives and Cllr. Jennifer Vallen during the operation in ward 16. NO STONE UNTURNED: Safety officials checking the maximum number of students in a van

KwaDukuza Traffic and Crime prevention team together with Operation Hlokomela and ward 16 councillor, Jennifer Vallen

took to the street on Thursday, 19 January 2017 to ensure commuters' safety. The main aim of this roadblock was to ensure that school children are

transported by valid driver's license holders with PDP's and in roadworthy vehicles. Bongani Gumede of Hlokomela said the operation as a whole will

continue throughout the month of February and urged parents to be wary of which cars they put their children in. “We need parents to cooperate with us the most, because they are the ones who put pressure on drivers to make space for their kids even if the car is full,” said Gumede. He added that they will call a meeting with the parents to enlighten them about the danger they put their children in. Cllr Vallen echoed the safety message and also said, “There are many other

programmes to come, we look forward to the continuation of this programme, so that we can see positive outcomes. We have received numerous complaints from the public saying that they don't see enough police visibility. This is part of the visibility they asked for and we will be part of it as ward committee to monitor it.” Va l l e n t h a n k e d KwaDukuza Traffic and Crime prevention team and Operation Hlokomela for availing themselves for this initiative. M.E Thengwayo of KD

Traffic and Crime Prevention said, “We will continue to make sure that children are at school at all times. What we have realised while doing this operation is that a lot of students are loitering around school premises and in the street. We will follow up and find out what could be the cause of this”. He added that as a department together with the ward councillors and Hlokomela they will continue to ensure that school children arrive to school alive and are safe on their way back home as well.

LEADERS: From: (L-R): Standing: Cllr Xolani Mdletshe, Cllr Linda Mdletshe and Cllr Mlungisi Shelembe. Seated: Acting Municipal Manager, Sizwe Khuzwayo; Municipal Speaker, Makhosazana Zungu; Mandeni Mayor, Cllr Sphesihle Zulu; Mandeni Deputy Mayor, Cllr Phindile Sishi and Cllr Ntombizodwa Florence Ntuli

Mandeni Municipality hosted an Executive Retreat Assembly at Ocean Reef Hotel in Zinkwazi from 17 January to 19 January 2017. Both the political and administrative leadership gathered with the aim of obtaining high level reflection on activities that occurred in the first six months of the 2016/17 financial year, the mid-year departmental reports, and annual report that will provide the full picture of what has been happening in the municipality and how to move

forward towards the financial year. Mandeni Mayor, Councillor Sphesihle Zulu said, “We are confident that this is going to be a year of triumph again characterized with the double commitment from all councilors and officials, this is the year that we want to close all gaps that we have seen during the previous years in terms of service delivery. “This year is the very special year in the history of this country because it marks 100 years since the giant struggle

stalwart was born, Oliver Reginald Tambo who mastered an art of maths and science, law and arts, politics and responsible leadership.” Zulu also expressed his appreciation for the tremendous and the remarkable role that was played by the previous council. “I am also happy that finally we have managed to fill the vacancy of the Manager Community services which have taken us a very long time, over and above I'm happy because Mr Dlamini who

filled this position is a son of Mandeni and defeats that myth of our enemies that a Mandeni born cannot occupy a managerial position in this municipality,” he said. Also discussed at the assembly was the fact that the municipality has also c o n t i n u e d w i t h implementation of its staff disciplinary codes as guided by the relevant policy and legislative frameworks in as far as institutional arrangements and municipal transformation is concerned.

Community members plead for respect

ROAD ACCIDENT FUND / MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE CLAIMS Have you been seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident or the victim of possible medical negligence?

By Xpress Reporter

Members of the community who represented public interest in the Tender Adjudication Meeting on Tuesday, 17 January 2017 have lamented the ousting of Councilor Ibrahim Kolia from the meeting. Kolia was asked to leave the meeting due to his commitment as a councilor and rules that forbid councilors to sit in such meetings, however the manner in which his case was dealt with has been met with criticism from those who were present. Haroon Mohammedy and Cassim Moola who were present on their individual capacity as community members on the day feel that the chairperson of the committee, Skhumbuzo Hlongwane went overboard by

dismissing Kolia in public. “I felt embarrassed and ashamed by the way they handled councilor Kolia, they should have been discreet and called him to the side and reminded him that he should not have been there and not embarrass him in public,” said Moola. The complainants also lamented the way the chairperson of the committee handled the sitting, citing his refusal to allow public participation as contradictory to the advert which stated 'for public concern'. “The problem I want to highlight is the attitude of officials in the municipality, an official that holds a public position must learn to respect the public. In a public position there is accountability, transparency

and most of all respect. If he as a public official doesn't respect people, he will be treated the same. As a public official you should know that you have to respect the people you accountable to,” further commented Moola. The purpose of the TAC meeting was to lay out the processes that have been followed in appointing companies to oversee the construction of a civic center in an area currently occupied by a sports complex. On the day of the meeting, Hlongwane said the public was only invited to observe and not to participate which ignited a lot of criticism towards the committee he chairs. Meanwhile, attempts to get hold of Hlongwane were fruitless until the printing of this article.

plaza was targeted by a fraudster from Umlazi who came in to purchase a J5 and J7 Samsung phone on “her” card. After receiving one phone, her companion left the store and head office picked up that the card was fraudulent and notified the salesperson. At this stage, the female was patiently waiting for her J5 phone, only to be arrested and handed over to police. The card has also been linked to fraudulent deals in other areas as well. Zandile Mafu (24) was granted bail of R2000.

Outrageous A 19-year-old Zamani township youth is lucky that his uncle has a cool head. Nkosinathi Ngema (42) alleges that he was speaking to his mother when he was approached by his nephew who simply stabbed him in the back. Ngema fled but the lad followed him, brandishing a cane-knife and knife. He removed his licensed firearm from his safe and fired a shot to scare off the enraged youth. The youth left and went to Ngema'a brother and struck him with the cane-knife on his buttocks and leg. He then returned to the shop where his grandmother was and demanded money from her before fleeing. Sanele Sifiso Ntuli (19) has been remanded in custody pending an investigation into his fitness to be released on bail.

The swordsman of Northlands Park An Indian Village man alleges he was attacked by a sword-wielding Northlands Park man on Christmas day. Sanjay Iodiaparsad alleges that he had gone to visit his son. En route, he was accosted by his mother and sister-inlaw who began verbally abusing him. His mother-inlaw allegedly called her tenant whom she handed a sword to, to attack him. The swordsman allegedly struck at him and he raised his arm to block resulting in a cut to his right palm. Suleman Sheik (51) appeared in court on Tuesday

Respect all A security guard appeared in court last Thursday after he allegedly shot and killed a dog. A teenager who lives at Lindelani alleges that at about 10pm he heard the dogs in their yard barking. He noticed the guard who is known to him walking on the road. He alleges the man drew a gun and shot his dog which died as a result of the injury sustained. Police were alerted and Sakhile Nzuza (33) was arrested. He was released at court and is due back on 16 February. Brothers at war A 25-year-old rape survivor is angry and confused. She alleges that her boyfriend and his cousins left her at home and went to a music festival on 27 December 2016. One cousin returned later and allegedly raped her in the house. She tried several times to contact her boyfriend, however, he was more interested in the music festival. She then sent him a message which was unclear. He then rushed home to find she was not in. He managed to contact her, only to learn that she was raped and was at hospital and going to the police. The culprit was arrested last week and was remanded in custody pending a bail consideration.

ACTIVE: From: (L-R): KwaDukuza Primary Foundation Phase H.O.D, Ms Ganas; Principal, Mr P Pillay and PlaySport 365 CEO, Yashin Tewary with some of the learners

Last Wednesday, PlaySport 365 conducted a demo for the Grade R learners of KwaDukuza Primary School. The children were put through their paces using hurdles, cones, agility sticks and shuttle runs. PlaySport 365 motto is “We get your child fit and active through the power of sports.” PlaySport 365 CEO, Yashin Tewary, a former Natal Tennis player and ex

teacher, emphasized the value of hand-eye coordination. Tewary was grateful to the principal, Mr P Pillay and the Foundation Phase H.O.D, Ms Ganas for having PlaySport 365 at KDP. PlaySport 365's aim is to offer free demos this term to any school in the Stanger area, including Shakaville and Lindelani. Principals should contact him for bookings.

Tewary also stated that PlaySport 365's origin is in Manor Primary, with the help of Principal, Mr L Reddy and Deputy Principal, Mr I Abraham. The goal of having a sports academy was achieved. Classes for 2017 have begun. To enroll your child, or to book for Adult Get Fit classes (starting soon), contact Yashin Tewary on 084 357 9552.

Celebrating National Police Day HEROES IN BLUE: Cabinet approved 27 January as National Police Day in 2005. The day remembers the sacrifices that the men and women in blue have made and continue to make as they provide safety for all who live in South Africa. It is also a day to reflect on the significance and meaning of the policing profession and the important role it plays in society. National Police Day is an important day on the SAPS's calendar as it marks the date on which the South African Police Service Act, 1995 (Act no 68 of 1995) was promulgated.

Ever so often we hear and read of fraud, corruption, nepotism, underhand acts by those in authority. World Leprosy Day will be observed around the world on Sunday, 29 January 2017. The day was initiated in 1954 by French philanthropist and writer, Raoul Follereau, as a way to raise global awareness of this deadly disease and call attention to the fact that it can be prevented, treated and cured. Leprosy is an infectious chronic disease that targets the

nervous system, especially the nerves in the cooler parts of the body - the hands, feet, and face. - if not treated sufferers can become blind, lose the sensations in their hands and feet; and become prone to a disability through the threat of injury. On this day, organizations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) hold public and educational outreach events where they give people information about

Ratepayers have no faith with Municipalities iLembe is now reminding the ratepayers

regarding their outstanding balance of sewer rates and instructing ratepayers that they have 60 days to settle the account. This must be done on a monthly basis, many people don't receive their statements early and they must pay their own taxi fares to get to Stanger and query their accounts. Do you call this “customer service?” iLembe must note that there are many poor ratepayers and they must also know that we ratepayers make the council's wage. In Darnall the condition of drinking water is sometimes terrible and areas of Nonoti people don't receive water for weeks, yet their accounts are very high. People have no faith with Ilembe. Shame on you. Ilembe must show respect and work together with the ratepayers. I really don't blame the Mayor and councilors. They do their job and report problems. This is all departmental issues. There are more executive directors, assistant E.D's , managers, but no work done! This is happening in Ilembe and KwaDukuza Municipalities. These directors and managers must know that councilors are accountable to the voters. We ratepayers are calling for council to sort this major issue. Then only will KwaDukuza be a city in 2030. Ford Kuga fiasco continues

Jehovah's Witnesses assembly North Coast congregations of Jehovah's Witnesses invite and welcome all interested persons to a one day assembly that will highlight how we can “Maintain Love for Jehovah”. The importance of this theme cannot be overemphasised, as mankind has been given no greater command than to Love God with our whole heart, mind and soul. One of the discussions on the Saturday morning programme has as its title “Whoever Loves God Must Also Love His Brother”. The

programme will be presented in English in the Empangeni Civic Centre starting 9:40am on February 18th 2017, ending at 4pm with a one hour break at lunch time. As is the custom, attendance is free and no collections are taken or asked for. The full d a y s t a l k s a n d demonstrations provide, both young and old, an opportunity to examine just how real their love for God is. Further information can be obtained from Martin Powell on 082 494 5365 / mwpowell@wol.co.za

POSSIBLE ENGINE OVERHEATING: Burnt out Ford Kuga

Owners of Ford Kuga vehicles across South Africa are growing concerned after numerous reports of the vehicles spontaneously catching fire. One person has died so far, amid numerous reports of the mid-size SUV erupting in flames. It has been estimated that as many as 40 Ford Kugas have gone up in smoke so far.

Ford says it is still investigating several incidents of the Kuga vehicle catching alight. During the past few weeks, several Kugas equipped with the 1.6l EcoBoost engine have caught alight and in December 2015 one person was killed when his car burst into flames. Ford South Africa says it's

still trying to obtain evidence from the police regarding the death of Reshall Jimmy whose Kuga caught alight in 2015, and other incidents to determine the underlying cause for the fires. Ford SA said the cause of some of its Kuga SUVs catching fire may be caused by engine overheating. In the latest incident, a man

was driving just outside Durban in Westville North when his Kuga caught alight. He managed to escape unscathed. Ford has asked owners of 1.6-litre models to 'contact their Ford dealer to request a further check of the maintenance items, especially to check coolant system condition and integrity.’

Here are some activities to keep you busy: by kidz, for kidz

Colouring time!

Q: Why did the boy bring a ladder to school? A: He wanted to go to high school.

Q: Why do bananas have to put on sunscreen before they go to the beach? A: Because they might peel! Q: What do elves learn in school? A: The elf-abet.

Q: Which flower talks the most? A: Tulips, of course, because they have two lips! Knock, knock. Who's there? Lettuce. Lettuce who? Lettuce in, it's freezing out here!

A Town Mouse and a Country Mouse

A Town Mouse and a Country Mouse were friends. The Country Mouse one day invited his friend to come and see him at his home in the fields. The Town Mouse came and they sat down to a dinner of barleycorns and roots the latter of which had a distinctly earthy flavour. The flavour was not much to the taste of the guest and presently he broke out with “My poor dear friend, you live here no better than the ants. Now, you should just see how I fare! My larder is a regular horn of plenty. You must come and stay with me and I promise you shall live on the fat of the land." So when he returned to town he took the Country Mouse with him and showed him into a larder containing flour and oatmeal and figs and honey and dates. The Country Mouse had never seen anything like it and sat down to enjoy the luxuries his friend provided. But before they had well begun, the door of the larder opened and some one came in. The two Mice scampered off and hid themselves in a narrow and exceedingly uncomfortable hole. Presently, when all was quiet, they ventured out again. But some one else came in, and off they scuttled again. This was too much for the visitor. "Good bye," said he, "I'm off. You live in the lap of luxury, I can see, but you are surrounded by dangers whereas at home I can enjoy my simple dinner of roots and corn in peace."

Forever loved and missed by your wife, son and daughter

No words can tell the loss we had 2 years today They say that time will heal Neither time nor reason will change the way we feel For no-one knows the heartache that lies behind our smile For someone who meant so much to us and loved by all he knew You left behind a trail of tears and precious memories too Remembering our happiest days spent with you We loved the sunshine in your smile and kindness in your heart But heaven saw you tired which meant we had to part Till memories fall and life departs You will live forever in our hearts

MAMA ALISHA

2016 THE BEST YEAR OF MY LIFE- ALL THANKS TO MAMA ALISHA I am Mr Vijay Tinnet from Stanger Manor. I was a security guard for 15 years but had nothing to show as my salary too was small. I had fear to marry becuase I had fear that I couldn’t support a big family. One day I was chatting with Jan Corbus my previous work mate who had become rich so fast and he told me to go to Mama Alisha because she had helped him to get rich. He called her and told her he was sending me to her. The next day I went, she started with a prayer, then she told me to use a magic wallet. I took the magic wallet home, after only 3 days she had told me I woke up checked the wallet and here was a lot of money. I went back to her she said it will bring more. I bought myself a brand new range rover & A home in Umhlanga and also got married. I opened my own business thanks too Mama Alisha

MY WIFE TOLD ME TO GO TO HELL WHEN I WAS POOR BUT SHE WANTS ME BACK BECAUSE IM RICH I am Cliff from Umhlanga. I came to know about Mama Alisha from Auntie Merina who lives in Stanger and had previously visited her with a financial problem and it had been fixed. I had lost all my money, cars, business some of which was left to me by my late parents. When things went real bad. My wife told me to go to hell and started having affairs looking out for rich men and when I confronted her about it she told me go to hell, left me alone and went. I suffered for almost 2 years but meeting Mama Alisha rose me up again. She gave me a magic wallet with which I could get money daily inside my house. I opened up a new business worth 2 million rands bought 2 new cars and when my wife heard that I am up again she wants me back, thinking of forgiving her but am not sure. Only that she is the mother of my 3 kids. I can forgive her for only that. If Alisha bought my life back to normal, I know she can help you too.

XPress In a local derby game played between iLembe Cricket Club and Dawnheights Cricket Club, iLembe trounced Dawnheights in a low scoring KwaZulu Natal Cricket Union Challenge League I game played at the Country Club grounds this past Sunday. Dawnheights won the toss and chose to field first. iLembe posted 154 all out after 37.3 overs.

iLembe trounce Dawnheights in low scoring game Dawnheights bowler D. Rautenbach struck first removing opener A. Sarwar for 9 with the score on 12 in the 3rd over. I. Mahomed was joined by skipper A. Nadasen and they took the score to 43 in the 9th over before

Mahomed was run out by Rautenbach for a promising 23. Nadasen tried to up the run rate but fell to a S. Mohamed lbw for 24 in the 22nd over. With iLembe in some strife at 109/7 in the 28th over, Y.

Ismail and C. Shange steadied the ship with a 31 run partnership for the 8th wicket before Shange fell victim to a K. Govender lbw. The last 2 wickets fell on 154 in the 38th over with Ismail carrying his bat with a hard

fought 37* which included 3 boundaries. Dawnheights bowlers kept their team in with a shout with Govender 3/38 after 8.3 overs and Mohamed 2/12 after 6 overs with iLembe posting a par score at country club. Needing a run rate of 3.1 runs an over, Dawnheights chase got off to the worst possible start after opener S. Singh fell of the 3rd ball of the innings to S. Sadayan for 0. Singh's partner A. Singh was next to fall for 3 to I. Mahomed

in the next over. A. Bageloo 1 and S. Mohamed 0, fell in the 3rd over to Sadayan with the total on 8. L. Moodley and K. Govender tried to resurrect the sinking Dawnheights ship but it was in vain as Moodley was caught behind by keeper Y. Ismail of the bowling of Mahomed for 13. Moodley was Ismail's 5th victim caught behind as the batsmen where finding the edge of the bat regularly. Sadayan and Mahomed were on fire as they dismissed Dawnheights big hitters and last hopes, R. Naidoo (8) and Rautenbach (0) respectively. U n f o r t u n a t e l y Dawnheights sunk to 52 all out after 15 overs, with Sadayan 5/27 after 8, Mahomed 4/25 in 7 and man of the match Ismail claimed 6 catches to go with his 37*,were iLembe's chief destroyers.

Keane urges West Ham to ditch Payet Robbie Keane has weighed into the Dimitri Payet debate, and has told West Ham in no uncertain terms to cut loose the want away player and reinvest the money. The 29-year-old Frenchman is eager to secure a move to former Ligue 1 side Marseille, having cited family reasons, and has been left out of the Hammers' side for their two recent Premier League matches. Slaven Bilic's charges certainly didn't appear to miss Payet too much as they

convincingly beat Crystal Palace and Middlesbrough, and Keane admits that despite being a "top, top player", he has to go. He told Goals on Sunday: "There's a problem there. "It is looking like that the best thing for the club and Payet probably to leave, certainly if you can get good money for him. "He is a top, top player, but they are flourishing since he announced he wants to go. "When you have a player who is a special talent and

Dmitri Payet set to leave West Ham

wants to leave, there is always a few in the dressing room, people like Mark Noble who is a legend there,

who is thinking 'this is my club and you just want to walk away'. "Everybody has their own

situations. I don't know if he's homesick and his family wants to go home, but I think for West Ham, try and get the money and get someone in this window or in the summer." Scotland manager Gordon Strachan went one step further by suggesting West Ham may be winning because of Payet's stance. He explained: "It can bind the squad together. "Sometimes you have an individual that's so good that you rely so much on him and

the rest take a back seat. "Now it's a case of 'we've not got him here, we'll all have to pitch in and do a bit more'. They probably feel more comfortable that way. "Sometimes the players feel undervalued when everybody is talking about one player and it can wear them down. "There's freedom when that player is not there and they can go out and play. They have done incredibly well and seem to be a more rounded team in this period.”
