14% reduction in road fatalities in KZN 2 WEEKS SPECIALS
province during the 2019/2020 financial year, “The late MEC Ntuli has been in the frontline, travelling the length and breadth of the province, rolling out government efforts to reduce road fatalities while also mitigating the impact of Covid19 on citizens. We acknowledge the vast contribution he made to curb road carnages in line with the 20% set target of reducing road fatalities in the province. Moving forward we will build on the solid foundation made by MEC Ntuli to ensure road safety and end bloodshed on our roads,” said MEC Mshengu. “Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and the inclement weather conditions, our law enforcement officers were out in full force during the festive season period and stopped 93 619 vehicles at multi-disciplinary roadblocks and other operations. This resulted in 6 810 written charges being issued, while 381 vehicles were suspended, and 84 vehicles impounded. A total of 115 motorists were arrested for drunken driving and 11 motorists were arrested for excessive speeding. Furthermore, a total of 1612 motorists were charged for various offences that include driving without valid driver's licences, failure to wear seatbelts, driving unlicensed vehicles and inconsiderate driving,” added MEC Kwazi Mshengu

Foreign owned shops set alight in Durban By Xpress Reporter
Fear has been ignited upon foreign nationals in KwaZulu Natal, following the torching of two foreign owned shops on Monday, 25 January 2021 ,in the Durban CBD. Durban Metro Police confirmed that two shops were set alight, in the CBD, by an unknown group of people. On Monday Durban Metro Police spokesperson, Parboo Sewpersad said one arrest had been made, “it is alleged that a group of ten people, walked into two shops that have been torched. One person arrested from that group, police is investigating further. They just walked into the shop and apparently throw petrol and set the place alight. There was a hawkers table set alight,” said Sewpersad. One of the shop owners, Mohamed Hossain said a group of men looted his shop before set it alight and lost about R400 000 worth of stock. Hayat Khan of the Pakistan SA Association said he believes it was xenophobic attacks, “it was a xenophobic attack, as other shop owners were also threatened. The foreign national community is now living in fear,” said Khan.

DURBAN: Shops looted, set alight after mob runs amok in Durban CBD on Monday, 25 January 2021.
KwaZulu Natal SAPS spokesperson said a group of about 30 persons gathered at King DiniZulu Park indicating that they wanted to march to the City Hall to hand over a memorandum, “Police informed them that they would not be allowed to march. Whilst this was happening, another group converged in the city and began looting shops. Reports were received of two shops as well as a stall belonging to a street vendor that were set alight. Police officers from Durban Central and Metro police responded. They pursed the group and one suspect was arrested. He
attempted to stab police officers during the arrest but was quickly subdued without
any injury to any of the arresting officers,” said Colonel Jay Naicker
Kwa-Zulu Natal traditional leaders have raised concerned, that bodies are being swopped at funeral parlours, and many bereaved families are receiving the wrong body, burying and cremating strangers. Last week two incident occurred where families were given the wrong bodies to bury by the funereal service, the mix-up appears to be happening due to the strict covid-19 protocols,
where families are not allowed to view the body of their loved one who passed away from the virus. The KZN provincial house of traditional leaders, led by Inkosi Phathisizwe Chiliza, called on stakeholders in the funeral service industry to ensure these incidents don't occur, “traditional leaders are aware of the protocols that had to be followed by funeral service, with regards to handling the bodies of
people who died from covid19 complications,” said Chiliza “As traditional leaders, we fully understand that funeral service providers are working under immense pressure, as bodies continue to pile up at their facilities. We are also aware that they have to follow certain protocols in handling the bodies of people who died due to Covid-19 complications,” added

Grieving his father's death, Mohammed Siraj claimed a five-wicket haul
After India ended Australia's 32-year unbeaten streak at Brisbane's Gabba Ground to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series, unlikely heroes were discovered in the injury-hit Indian team.
on his bicycle for training. “My mentor was called Washington. He Helped me a lot and I kept my son's name after him as a way to show my gratitude,” Sundar's father told media.
Mohammed Siraj: tragedy to triumph Despite grieving his father, who died just before the series, the 26-year-old emerged as one of India's new stars. Thrust into the limelight after a succession of injuries to frontline bowlers, Siraj rose to the challenge with a maiden five-wicket haul in Brisbane, only his third Test. Siraj's father, an auto-rickshaw driver from the southern city of Hyderabad, always dreamed of seeing his son play for India, but he passed away on November 20. Siraj stayed in Australia and missed his father's last rites despite an offer to fly back home. The image of Siraj welling up when India's national anthem played in Sydney went viral. “The boy has become a man on this tour. Siraj, leader of the attack in the first Test and he has led from the front,” said former India opener Virender Sehwag.
Shardul Thakur: ticket to ride Playing his first Test of the tour, Thakur steadied India with a valuable 123-run firstinnings stand with Sundar and also topscored with 67. It was the third highest score by an Indian number eight in Australia. Growing up in a village in Maharashtra, Thakur, 29, had to commute in crowded local trains for two-and-a-half hours every day to chase his cricketing dreams. He would set out early and return home late. For one year, he stayed at his coach's small apartment in Mumbai because he could not afford any other accommodation. “We didn't take any money from him. I got him admitted in my school, and Shardul stayed with us for a year,” said the coach, Dinesh Lad.
Washington Sundar: defiant on debut Australia were in the driver's seat after they ran through India's top-order on day three. But in walked Sundar, a 21-year-old Test debutant who hit a defiant half-century. Sundar also took three wickets, including the key scalp of Steve Smith. Sundar became the toast of Indian media and when his father was asked about his son's unusual name, he revealed he had christened him after a friend who helped the struggling family buy uniforms and pay school fees. He even bought books for Sundar and took him
Shubman Gill: farming the strike The opener from India's agricultural state of Punjab came as a replacement for Prithvi Shaw and struck 91 on the final day to pave the way for India's stunning win. Gill, 21, spent a good amount of his childhood in his home village and was fascinated to see his grandfather, father and uncles working in the fields. It was in the sprawling fields that Gill started playing cricket with farm hands bowling to him. “I can tell you if he had not been a cricketer, he would have become a farmer. He still has an interest in farming,” said his father, Lakhwinder.
