n attempts to curb the scourge of gender based violence in society, K w a D u k u z a Municipality in partnership with the Department of C o o p e r a t i v e Governance & Traditional Affairs (COCGTA) led by MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube, joined masses of South Africans to honour Human Rights Day on 21 March 2019. The event was used to address the scourge of crime and the abuse of women and children within the District. MEC together with municipal officials began the day by embarking on a mass march from Mbambo Bus Stop to Chris Hani Sports Field where she addressed hundreds of KwaDukuza residents. As political parties are out in full force campaigning for the upcoming General Elections in May, ANC members in the General Gizenga Mpanza Region, KwaDukuza were allegedly attacked by IFP members in Lindelani Township F section in the early hours of Sunday. This was while they were participating in a door to door campaign in the area. The campaign was led by Police Minister Bheki Cele, who was not part of the group that was attacked. According to the African National Congress in Kwazulu-Natal, five ANC members were injured during the attack.
“We strongly condemn such barbaric behaviour against our members, who were campaigning peacefully when they were brutally attacked. As we speak, three ANC volunteers are being rushed to hospital in an ambulance while two others are being treated on the scene. We call on all law enforcement agencies to act speedily and arrest these thugs that threaten the democracy of our country by their acts of violence ahead of elections”, said Provincial Spokesperson, Cde Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu. She further pleaded with IEC to intervene on the matter. “IFP is clearly in breach of the elections code of conduct as signed by all political parties on Tuesday 19

IFP Secretary in Ilembe, Makhosonke Ntuli also denounced the attack and cited that intolerance amongst political parties need to come to an end. “As IFP we are saddened by the attack, everyone has a right to campaign where they deem fit. We are committed to maintaining peace towards the election and after,” said Ntuli.

In conclusion, the MEC directly appealed to perpetrators of violence who prey on the most vulnerable in society to discontinue abusing women and children. Speaking at the event, KwaDukuza Municipality Mayor Dr Ricardo Njabulo Mthembu urged residents of KwaDukuza to work together with the law enforcement agencies to ensure that those who violate the rule of law are brought to book and face the full might of the law. “We will be working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure that those
who disregard the constitutional rights of others are dealt with decisively within the parameters of the law,” said Mthembu. “The area of Ntshawini has experienced a series of incidents, including murders, which have warranted a direct response from the law enforcement agencies. “The gathering of over 300 local residents at Townsend Park last Tuesday evening was the result of concern expressed to both DOCRRA and the recently formed "Friends-of-Townsend-Park" that the well-used park, or part thereof, was being proposed for sale to a private organisation and would eliminate approximately one third of the total park area for public use. The meeting was not to protest against the establishment of a mosque - or any other religious, commercial or social structure. The meeting was purely about maintaining the existing park area. “DOCRRA has the major and only objection to the sale of public open space and part of the wellestablished, much loved and heavily used Townsend Park,” said Lever. He added that DOCRRA would like to discuss the matter with

Owing to promises he made to the people of Etete in 2016, KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu officially unlocked the 2.5km x 5m blacktop access road to the community of Etete which will be constructed at an astounding value of R 6.8 million.
This multi-million project in ward 20 will create job opportunities for the locals, it expected to be completed by 12 August 2019. Mayor Ricardo Mthembu alluded that KDM is committed to changing people's lives. “We will be working hand in glove with the local community as a way of
implementing our policy on Radical Economic Transformation,” said Mthembu. KwaDukuza Municipality during the 2016 Legkotla as part of its resolutions for the current Council Term of Office took a decision to prioritize this project.

All roads entering to Mandeni were barricaded with burning tyres and wood as a large number of disgruntled Mandeni residents took to the streets on the early hours of Monday calling for the Mayor of Mandeni Municipality, Siphesihle Zulu, to step down immediately. Mandeni residents allege that Zulu has continuously misused his authority for his personal gain. According to the protesters who marched to the Mandeni Local Municipality, Zulu stands
accused of committing nepotism. “Zulu needs to step down and allow someone with moral courage to take over. Enough is enough, he has dismally failed to deliver on his promises yet he keeps misusing government funds together with his wife,” said one of the protesters. Residents left Mandeni Municipality furious as they could not hand over the memorandum to the Mayor. It is alleged that he was not present at the municipality at the time. Sibusiso Khuzwayo confirmed that police arrested 12 people for public violence, during the protest, “We arrested 12 individuals for public violence in Nyoni and Newark on Monday during the protest. Today at 4 am three vacant factories were set alight together with trucks, fortunately no one sustained injuries but there are not arrests at the moment,” said Khuzwayo He further explained that police will conduct intensive investigation to find perpetrators behind the burning of property.

Australia upset the form book by defeating hosts India 3-2 in the ODI series. Ominously, Captain Aaron Finch has returned to form that had deserted him earlier. His form was carried into the series against Pakistan that is presently underway in the UAE. The Aussies have thus far convincingly overcome the Pakistanis on their "home" ground in the first two games by 8 wickets respectively with Finch scoring 116 and 153*. Others like Usman Khawaja and Sean Marsh are also on song and the Green Baggies look ominous for the World Cup. With the return of Steve Smith and David Warner, the batting will definitely be strengthened. Their bowling attack is well-balanced and takes wickets on a regular basis to keep the opponents on the back foot. The Aussies are on the way up and the others better beware. Indian cricketers, meanwhile, will be involved in the IPL that began on Saturday. Although exciting, this hit, miss and giggle type of cricket is not the best preparation for the longer format of the World Cup. Not much time will be available for the selected players to adjust to the rigours of the 50 overs game. But the professionals that they are, they should be able to make the necessary adjustment. Time will tell. Locally, the Momentum Cup has reached the "death" stages. The semifinalists have been decided. The first match is between the Titans and the Cobras at Centurion on Wed (today) while the second game between the Dolphins and Warriors is on Thursday (tomorrow) at Kingsmead. While the Titans are
expected to proceed to the final on Sunday (31st), the Dolphins this season have not been playing well at Jayce Singh is a former home and have lost sports administrator and Patron of the KZNCU a number of games which they were expected to win. A fishing competition in aid of raising funds for Alvin Moonsamy, who is selected to play for Maritzburg Sporting, representing South Africa in the seventh Global veteran football Masters Tournament to be held in Malaysia in August later this year, was a tremendous success with entrants in all categories rewarded for their efforts. Organisers from Gueldies Football Club put this event together. Anglers from far as Richards Bay and Pietermaritzburg participated in the fishing tournament. The organisers will like to thank all the sponsors and anglers for making this event a huge success. They congratulated all the winners in the various categories. Another competition is planned for Saturday, 13July 2019.

Members of KwaDukuza Athletic Club participated and successfully completed the Deloitte Challenge last Sunday, 17 March 2019 with the 42.2 km marathon starting at the Lifestyle Centre in Ballito and the 21.1km half marathon starting at Sibaya casino. The races were championship timed. The weather was extremely hot and there was no provision for water made by the convenors. Many runners
experienced hydration problems. All KDAC members that attempted both the marathons completed the race within given time. The 42.2km marathon was run under trying conditions for many runners thus making it extremely difficult for the Comrades qualifier. Roshan Chalithar led upfront for KDAC in the 42.2km race cutting the tape in a time of 04:09 followed by Danny Sewmungal ( 0 5 : 1 8 ) , Morgan Pillay (05:22) and Y a t h i n

U. Hoosen scored a scintillating 63 as he led upfront to ensure iLembe Cricket Club a 7 wicket victory and stay in the hunt for a table topping finish in their game against East Coast in the KwaZulu Natal Cricket Union 50 over Challenge League game played on Sunday. In a bid to finish top of the table in the Promotion 1 league, the iLembe outfit travel to Umlazi for their final fixture in the league. Manager, N. R. Singh encouraged the team to focus on this all important match and finish the season with a resounding win. East Coast captain, E. Moodley won the toss and decided to bat first. Openers D. Bengu and B. Chetty put on 43 runs before Chetty was caught by S. Logenathan of the bowling of I. Sher for 18. Bengu was then trapped LBW by Logenathan for 23 with the total on 59/2 after 25 overs. Dawnheights crush Tongaat

Youngster, Wasim Suleiman and Comfort Shange (captain) lead Dawnheights to an impressive bonus point victory over Tongaat in the KwaZulu Natal Cricket Union 50 over Challenge League played over the
weekend. Dawnheights won the toss and elected to bat. Opener Wasim showed his class in amassing 70 runs with his aggressive batting. Notable contributions from captain Comfort Shange (50) and allrounder Ishan Kalia (37) saw DCC reach 239 in their allotted 50 overs on a slow pitch. Tongaat began their chase with a steady and cautious batting amidst good tight bowling from Ishan and Keane. The slow pitch encouraged the captain to bring Avishkar as the change bowler. The tight bowling built up pressure and it wasn't long before Avishkar got the first wicket. Thereafter wickets kept tumbling with Raj ended up with 3 scalps, and other bowlers sharing the wickets. The last wicket fell with Tongaat requiring a further 80 runs giving Dawnheights victory.
