“ILembe second hotspot in KZN” Zikalala By Xpress Reporter

KwaZulu Natal Premier, Sihle Zikalala has reported that the province is sitting at 10% and remains the 4th highest province in the country in terms of Covid-19 cases. Ilembe district is

identified as the second hotspot after eThekwini Metro. “While iLembe has fewer number of Covid-19 cases, however when calculating according to numbers per population they are higher than Ethekwini. ILembe

stands at 53,5 per 100 000 compared to the 30,0 per 100 000 of eThekwini. This makes Ilembe the second most concerning hotspot in the province of KwaZulu Natal,” said Zikalala on 24 May 2020 during a media briefing.

The premier further added that the province now reports an average of 20 new cases which is a slight decline from the 43 to 45 that used to be reported. “eThekwini Metro is still contributing the bulk of the new cases at 58%. In Ilembe district alone, we

currently have over 380 cases. We remain pleased with the capacity that has been created by the KZN Department of Health in dealing with Covid-19. Within a few short months the province has prepared 1870 beds for isolation, 5164 for quarantine, 143 for ICU and 84 for high care. Based on the current patient load we

have adequate stock in all our facilities," added Premier Zikalala. According to the office of the premier the province has screened over 3,9 million and tested about 80 208. Concluding, Sihle Zikalala urged all sectors of society to play their role in curbing the spread of this pandemic.

Here are the level 3 rules KZN: Premier of KwaZulu Natal Sihle Zikalala giving an update on covid-19 in the province

Another accolade for KwaDukuza Municipality By Xpress Reporter

KwaDukuza Municipality has once again proven why it's considered one of the fastest growing leading Municipalities when it comes to combating climate change. Last week, KDM was declared the National Winner of WWF's One Planet City Challenge. The One Planet City Challenge is an international WWF initiative which invites cities to report ambitious and innovative climate actions and to demonstrate how they

are delivering on the 2015 Paris Agreement. It is reported that the international jury recognized KwaDukuza as a high performer across all categories and was particularly impressed given the town's disadvantaged urban context. KDM Acting Mayor, Cllr Dolly Govender expressed her gratitude, alluding that the victory is for all KwaDukuza citizens as a whole. "It is an honour to be bestowed with such an accolade. This goes to show that we have clearly

understood that regardless of the extent of our municipal area, KwaDukuza has a role to play to ensure low emissions, education of the communities and sustainability of the environment in general as enshrined in the United Nations 'Sustainable Development Goals on Cities and sustainable Urbanization'," said Cllr Govender. Dr Meggan Spires, Senior Manager ICLEI Africa also congratulated the Municipality. "We at ICLEI

Africa send hearty congratulations to KwaDukuza Municipality on being named as a national winner of the One Planet City Challenge. With partners such as WWF, ICLEI Africa has been working with KwaDukuza for many years on their climate change plans and actions. KwaDukuza is a climate change leader not only in South Africa but globally and this award is thoroughly deserved," said Dr Meggan Spires.

The whole of South Africa will move to coronavirus (Covid-19) level 3 lockdown on June 1, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Sunday. This will entail the reopening of most of the economy and would see some eight million people return to work, including most civil servants. Here are some highlights from Ramaphosa's speech on Sunday: * Alcohol will be sold but only for home consumption but the sale of cigarettes will continue to be prohibited for health reasons. * Workers can start returning to work but employees over the age of 60 with comorbidities should ideally work from home. * Companies must have a plan before opening and must ensure the daily screening of workers, quarantine those that are affected and assist with tracing those believed to have come into contact with

Sappi, Southern Lodestar Foundation and SPAR Porridge Donation to feed local communities

Sappi Southern Africa in partnership with the Southern Lodestar Foundation and its distribution partner the SPAR Group, have joined hands to provide much needed relief to people in dire need during the Covid-19 pandemic. A total of 3,000 kg of A+ Plus Instant Maize Meal was delivered to STANGER SUPERSPAR for the benefit of communities near the Sappi Stanger Mill. This initiative was undertaken as part of a broader partnership between the three partners, which has seen 60,000kg of A+ instant porridge distributed to vulnerable communities near Sappi's operations in KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga. The understanding that the pandemic is placing great strain on the livelihoods of communities that are already severely pressurised, and are finding it difficult to afford basic food, is what led to Sappi entering into a partnership with the Southern Lodestar Foundation. The Southern Lodestar Foundation is an organisation which provides innovative nutrition solutions for children and has developed the instant maize porridge which is

being used in school breakfast programmes and is renowned for its nutritional value consisting of protein and other micronutrients. Sappi Stanger Mill used its understanding of local communities to identify seven local community organisations, which were used as a springboard to provide community assistance. These organisations which service the local communities in Gledhow, Ntshawini and the greater KwaDukuza community, include a local welfare centre, local clinics, a hospice, a home for children with disabilities as well as a feeding scheme. “A 1kg pack of the highly nutritional porridge can feed up to 10 adults with a 75g-100g serving per day, or can provide a 50g serving to 20 children, “says Andre Redinger, founder of The Southern Lodestar Foundation, a registered NPO, based in Hilton, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. As Managing Director of Millhouse Limited, the manufacturers of the porridge, Andre established the foundation as a vehicle and platform to connect people, nutrition and food within the African landscape. This with the goal to ensure knowledge and

nutritious foods are more accessible to all, for the growing and flourishing minds and bodies of all people. “Our passion is to feed, nurture and grow communities through knowledge and nutrition, as we believe that no one can reach their full potential on an empty stomach,” explains Andre. “Sappi is an active member of the KwaDukuza community and in the Southern Lodestar Foundation and SPAR, we found partners who are aligned with our vision to assist communities particularly in this difficult time,” said Elijah Masondo, Sappi's Communications Manager for KZN. “We have always taken an active interest in assisting the Stanger and surrounding communities,” says Sunny Somduth, Manager of Stanger SUPERSPAR. “At this challenging time in particular, we are delighted to partner with Sappi and the Southern Lodestar Foundation in this initiative, to facilitate the provision of food and nutrition to these vulnerable communities. We trust that it will greatly assist families in need.” We would like to thank all our donors and partners involved in our efforts to aid those in need during this uncertain time.

What the law says about wearing face masks The lockdown regulations state that as an attempt to flatten the curve of the coronavirus pandemic, a person must wear a face mask or an item that covers their nose and mouth when they are in public, and no one is allowed to enter a public place if they are not wearing a mask. This regulation leaves many people with unanswered questions as it does not specify whether or not wearing a mask is an offence that warrants arrest and detention. According to national police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu

Sister Shabalala of Glenhills Clinic, accepts the donation of A+ porridge

Naidoo, not wearing a mask is "currently not an offence therefore police cannot arrest for such a failure.” Speaking to the Xpress Times, KwaDukuza SAPS Communications Officer, Priya Nunkumar stated that KwaDukuza SAPS has not arrested anyone for failing to wear a mask. "I can confirm that KwaDukuza SAPS has not arrested or fined any members of the community for not using a mask,” she said.

South Africans who work and study abroad can travel

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation and the National Coronavirus Command Council, approved essential travel for South Africans who want to return to countries where they are based. "South Africans who wish to leave the Republic are permitted to depart only for the following reasons: work, study, family reunion, take up permanent residency and receive medical attention," Home Affairs said in a statement. KwaDukuza's 'Iron Man' passes on Well-known KwaDukuza resident, Nikeyi Maarbeel passed away at his home in Stanger Manor last week. Fondly known as Jaawan (young), the 82-yearold had achieved more runs, be it marathons, ultra-marathons or fun runs than any KwaDukuza person his age. Running in the colours of KwaDukuza Athletic Club, Maarbeel was a familiar face on the roads; a true inspiration to all young and old. Circumstances surrounding his death are still unclear, with residents speculating that he was murdered. However, KwaDukuza SAPS could not provide more details at the time of going to press.

97 killed in Pakistan plane crash

Poachers nabbed near KwaDukuza Police arrested four poachers at a roadblock near KwaDukuza on Thursday and found them in possession of four red duiker and two porcupines. KZN police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said that Newark police officers acted on a report of suspects poaching at a farm in the district. "The police officers together with local farmers and other law

enforcement agencies responded, however they found that the suspects had fled the farm. A roadblock was set up on the R102 at the Fort Pearson intersection to capture the suspects," she said. "A vehicle with four occupants was stopped and a search was conducted. Upon searching the vehicle, four red duiker carcasses and two porcupine carcasses were found inside the vehicle."

CRASH: A Pakistan International Airlines plane crashed on Friday, killing at least 97 passengers and crew members

Rescue crews have retrieved the data recorder from the Pakistan International Airlines plane that crashed on Friday, killing at least 97 passengers and crew members. The recorder, or "black box," was found at the crash site in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi on Saturday, according to PIA spokesman Abdullah Khan. Two passengers survived but 97 bodies have been recovered from the scene, Pakistan Armed Forces spokesman Major General Babar Iftikhar said earlier on Saturday. The jet went down in a residential area, but the plane did not hit any buildings and no one on the ground appears to have been killed, PIA CEO Air Vice Marshal Arshad Malik added. Iftikhar said army troops, rangers and social welfare organizations have been assisting in the search. He added: "97 bodies recovered. 2 passengers survived. 25 affected houses cleared, their residents accommodated at various places with the assistance of Civil Administration." The plane took off from Lahore and was due to land at 2:30 p.m. local time in Karachi but went missing from the radar, PIA spokesman Abdullah Khan

told CNN. The pilot on board told air traffic control in Karachi that he had lost engines, before the plane crashed on Friday. "We are proceeding direct, we have lost engines," the pilot can be heard saying about the plane's approach, in an audio recording of aircraft communications obtained by CNN from a Pakistani government source. On the recording, air traffic control asks the pilot to confirm that the plane will have a belly landing, a situation where an aircraft lands without deploying its landing gear. The pilot's response is inaudible. It is unclear why air traffic control was discussing such a landing. A few seconds later the pilot can be heard giving several mayday calls, followed by a response from air traffic control saying both runways are clear to land. The audio then cuts off. Khan confirmed the authenticity of the recording. "[The pilot] had been told both landing strips were available for his use but he preferred to use the goaround landing route, we are looking into the technical issue. Our prayers for the lives that have been lost," Khan said earlier on Friday. -CNN

KDM law enforcement nabs suspect

The suspects were also found in possession of a shotgun and a pistol with ten rounds of ammunition. "The firearms are licensed and were seized by police for further investigation," said Gwala. The four suspects, aged between 24 and 49, were arrested and charged for poaching and trespassing. They are expected to appear in the KwaDukuza Magistrates Court on Friday. The red forest duiker or Natal red duiker is similar to the common duiker, but is smaller in size and has a distinguishing reddish coloring. Additionally, it favors a denser bush habitat than the common duiker. In 1999, red forest duikers had an estimated wild population of 42 000. KwaZulu-Natal P r o v i n c i a l Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula congratulated the team for the successful arrest of the poachers.
