KZN Premier praises alcohol ban KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala has commended President Cyril Ramaphosa's decision to reinstate the ban on alcohol sales as part of South Africa's coronavirus lockdown measures, saying the number of medical trauma cases has dropped. On July 12, in a televised national address, Ramaphosa announced that the ban on alcohol sales would be reintroduced with immediate effect because since it was relaxed there had been a spike in trauma cases arriving at hospitals. According to the president, these hospital resources would be better utilised for treating coronavirus patients. During his weekly Covid-19 provincial update on Sunday, Zikalala said: “We are already starting to see some signs of the easing of pressure on our trauma, accident and emergency units in hospitals, as well as the mortuary admissions of people who died of
violent causes.” “We expect a further reduction in this regard the longer the ban continues,” he added. According to Zikalala, the number of trauma incidents had dropped by more than 20% since the reinstatement of the ban. “From the 6th to the 12th of July we had 155 trauma cases. But one week since the reintroduction of the ban on alcohol, from the 13th to the 18th (of July) we only had 120 trauma cases,” said the premier. “We have always maintained that alcohol is a contributing factor in murders, attempted murders, assaults, rapes and domestic violence. We have seen a reduction in these crimes since the police in the province started enforcing the ban on the sale and distribution of alcohol,” he added. The premier further announced that a total of 12 health workers had died of Covid-19 in the province. -IOL

Mandeni Municipality concerned over intimidation of service providers
MM: Sizwe Khuzwayo, Municipal Manager of Mandeni Local Municipality has voiced concern over intimidation of service providers within Mandeni Municipality.
Mandeni Local Municipality has weighed in on the continuous acts of intimidation of some of the Municipality's reportedly lawfully appointed service providers. It's reported that some service providers rolling out work and services in relation to various infrastructure and other municipal projects being implemented by the Municipality within its jurisdiction are being intimidated by individuals who call themselves 'Local Businesses'. In a report by Mandeni Local Municipal Manager, Mr Sizwe Khuzwayo, he uttered these acts of intimidation are intended to disrupt, and have in fact disrupted, the implementation of some Municipal projects, “The Municipality is aware
that these acts of intimidation are being perpetrated by disgruntled individuals and so-called “local businesses” that have banded together to form some informal structure/s or under the umbrella of the “Business Forum”. Furthermore, these acts of intimidation are intended to disrupt, and have in fact disrupted, the implementation of some Municipal projects and this is having a negative effect on service delivery and expenditure of conditional grants, and hence this has attracted the attention of other Spheres of Government,” said Khuzwayo “The Municipality subscribed to all the laws of the Country in particular Section 217(1) of the

ILEMBE: Launch of One Home, One Garden was a huge success at Ilembe District on 30 June 2020
KwaZulu-Natal Human Settlement and Public Works MEC Peggy Nkonyeni who is also the Operation Sukuma Sakhe MEC Champion for iLembe District last week Friday 25th of June 2020, launched Covid-19 One Home One Garden Two Fruit Tree Intervention program in the iLembe District. Covid-19 One Home One Garden and Two Fruit Tree is a provincial intervention program which was launched mid-June 2020 at Zululand District by the KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala and the KZN Department of Agriculture and Rural Development led by MEC Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi, aimed at encouraging communities to set up vegetable gardens and fight poverty in their respective homes in response to the dire situation that left many families financially stretched. ILembe MEC Champion Ms Peggy Nkonyeni rolled out the iLembe District Covid -19 One home one garden and two fruit tree at KwaDukuza Ward 4,
Shaka's Head last week Friday. In attendance were iLembe District municipality mayor Cllr Siduduzo Gumede, Deputy Mayor Dolly Shandu, KwaDukuza Municipality Acting Mayor Dolly Govender, Speaker Phumlile Zulu, Maphumulo Municipality Deputy Mayor Zama Ncalane and Mandeni Municipality Deputy Mayor Phindile Sishi. Ten identified families were assisted with gardening tools, seedling and two fruit trees in a form of organic seedling bed which will ensure that the growing of vegetables are not exposed to vagaries associated with destroying growing seed beds. This was coordinated by the appointed service provider called UMgibe Farming. Speaking at the first session which was held at Shaka 'Head community Hall with the beneficiaries only, His Worship Councillor Siduduzo Gumede appealed to all local municipalities in the district to

assist communities to fight against the pandemic in all forms. “I humbly request that as leaders we support the community in this difficult times of Covid-19 with the necessary tools to roll out poverty eradicating strategies and as we know so many people are being retrenched and still more will be retrenched” said Gumede. MEC Nkonyeni outlined the purpose of this provincial program. She said the government through Provincial Council Command resolved in doing away with food parcels because they make people lazy and there are not sustainable compared to planting of vegetables in modern ways. “This type of garden will not only feed families if handled properly, they could generate much needed money for people to sustain their lives and people can stop looking for employment to government” said Nkonyeni. She concluded with requesting other stakeholders to contribute and coordinate to instil the culture of One home one garden because Covid-19 is still here. Speaking with one of the beneficiaries Mndiyata Gaqa (70) said “I would like to thank the intervention from the government and the new strategy to plough many vegetables in a small space. The vegetables will help me boost my immune system as I am very old and I will take good care of this garden” said Gaqa.

Response to article “Anticorruption protest at Manor Primary”
With reference to your article dated 15th of July 2020, we as the Anti-corruption Parents Group of Stanger Manor Primary School would beg to differ on a number of issues going forward, namely: 1. COSAS stated that “members from the SGB and SMT brought innocent parents into their factional camps and fighting battles using learners.” This is untrue and no learners were involved in the protest. Concerned parents participated without fear or favour. There is no factional camps. What proof as COSAS do you have to back your statement? 2. COSAS speaks of illegally erecting a tent. Necessary permission was sought from relevant authorities and even the SAPS was invited to oversee the protest. Traffic authorities were also present. 3. The tent was not obstructing traffic, neither was it a hindrance to the learners and teachers. No teaching and learning was disrupted. 4. COSAS chose not to divulge to the public that they brought small unknown youngsters carrying sticks and batons, without shoes and masks to remove the tent themselves. Whose permission did you seek to remove a privately owned tent? 5. These children were brought in to intimidate parents. One would ask the question is COSAS' core role function to go around removing tents? 6. No racist remarks were made to COSAS. We have proof to back that. COSAS alleges that the anti-corruption parents group is a group that only serves a particular race group. This is untrue and misleading the public. We serve the interests of all parents irrespective of race. Why does COSAS play the
race card and mislead people? 7. If COSAS states that they fight for the learners, then what are we fighting for? Why don't you as COSAS and us as an anti-corruption parents group work together? The common factor here are our learners. 8. The Acting Principal stated that the memorandum will be handed to the SGB for their perusal. How can the SGB peruse the memorandum when the protest was to remove the SGB and Acting Principal? 9. In conclusion we would like to state that we are not tarnishing the image of the school, but rather striving to root out corruption, thus promoting the efficient functionality of school with quality teaching and learning taking place. Vishal Singh Anti-corruption Parents Group of Stanger Manor Primary

Albert Luthuli Hospital staff infections rise to 331
The Department of Health and unions have established a personal health and safety committee at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital in Durban to tackle the rise in the number of healthcare workers contracting Covid-19. Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu said at a media briefing on Sunday that hospital management and unions had set up the committee to deal with challenges regarding Covid19 personal protective equipment (PPE) protocols. She said all hospitals should have similar committees in operation and the department would ensure they were established. Simelane-Zulu confirmed that “about 300-or-so” healthcare workers had been infected with the coronavirus at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital, while the National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) put the figure at 331 on Sunday. “It is indeed about 300 or so healthcare workers, but we must remember that we are not only talking about nurses. We are talking about nurses, doctors, administration staff and general orderlies. The number of nurses infected is about 100, and of course that is a high number on its own,” Simelane-Zulu said. She said the department had on Friday met hospital management and unions to discuss the issue of PPE, which some staff had complained was lacking. She said a decision had been made to establish a committee to monitor the use of PPE and the department had agreed with unions and management to investigate
the use of and availability of PPE in the hospital. “There is no shortage of PPE in Inkosi Albert Luthuli, and I am saying this categorically there is no shortage, they have sufficient PPE. The challenge that we have in that particular facility is that there are some healthcare workers that believe that they should be given a particular (type of) PPE that is not in the guidelines from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases,” she said. “Inkosi Albert Luthuli is a very big hospital, and it is a specialised hospital, but healthcare workers there cannot be treated differently than healthcare workers in any other facility. We are committed to ensuring they are given the correct PPE at the correct level they are in. It depends on the level of exposure that is in that facility. “We are also worried about the fact that there might be an issue with how PPE is utilised in the facility. One thing we agreed upon between ourselves, management of the facility and organised labour, is they need to have a committee responsible for the health and safety of workers. It includes all stakeholders within the facility to ensure they walk about on a daily basis, on an hourly basis, to make sure everyone has PPE on and that everyone is utilising PPE correctly.” She said the department had last week visited Edendale Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, where dozens of workers had been infected, to check on PPE availability and to establish a
personal health and safety committee. The department would check to ensure similar committees at other hospitals were functioning correctly. “The issue of the infection of healthcare workers is something we need to sit down and correct together. We can't afford to be pointing fingers at each other, because if we do, healthcare workers are going to continue to be infected. We are working on the challenges they are facing at Albert Luthuli. What we are doing at Albert Luthuli is something we have started doing at other facilities,” she said. She added that a team of healthcare workers would be rotated between hospitals to resume the duties of staff who had been infected and needed to go into quarantine. Additional training of staff in the use of PPE would also be implemented. Nehawu provincial secretary Ayanda Zulu said the union was concerned about the number of healthcare workers that had been infected at Inkosi Albert Luthuli, Edendale, Stanger and Church of Scotland hospitals, but that it was engaging with the department. Zulu said the committees would play a “crucial” role to ensure health and safety protocols were implemented and the union welcomed PPE-usage training. Premier Sihle Zikalala said 1 557 healthcare workers in the province had been infected with the coronavirus, of whom 60% were nurses, and 12 had died. -IOL

The recruitment of former police officers forms part of the SAPS's commitment to improving the staffing levels to enable the organisation to fulfil it's Constitutional mandate of fighting crime and keeping the inhabitants of this country safe and secure. KZN expected to be the next epicentre KwaZulu-Natal is expected to become South Africa's next Covid-19 epicentre. This is according to National Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize, who noted that while the Western Cape and Eastern Cape's cases were stabilising, KZN is expected to take over from Gauteng with a surge in cases. On Monday, KZN recorded 45 614 cases, an increase of 2 399 from Sunday's cases. Mkhize said in SA, Gauteng still remained the province with the highest figures, however KZN is taking over. On Monday, Mkhize announced that the country's confirmed Covid19 cases stood at 373 628 with 140 new deaths reported. Of the cumulative figure, 45 614 of the cases were from KZN. KZN has also recorded 429 deaths with 13 494 recoveries.
Gauteng recorded 36 879 cases and the Western Cape recorded 85 772 and 65 316 cases were from the Eastern Cape. Mkhize said officials from his office are in talks with leadership in KZN on how to move ahead as infections are expected to peak in the next few weeks. He added that the goal now is to avert a shortage of beds and oxygen. On Sunday, KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala, hosted a briefing where he shared insights on the impact of Covid-19 in the province. Zikalala noted that the surge in cases continued with e T h e k w i n i a n d uMgungundlovu recording more than half of the daily cases. He said that the overall incidence risk for the province was 250 cases per 100 000 population. According to Zikalala, by
July 18, just over 1 600 people had been admitted to hospital. "Of those admitted, 265 patients were in ICU with 139 needing to be placed on a ventilator. Other patients were admitted to high care wards," he said. The Premier once again urged residents to continue in the fight against the pandemic. "There are no police officers; or government officials that can enforce the change in behaviour at home and at an individual level. Our defence weapons are our face masks, social distancing and regular washing of hands. Remember that there is no vaccine. The price to pay for not adhering to the protocols is too high; it is in our hands to save ourselves and those we love from this deadly pandemic," he said.

MANDELA DAY 2020 By Xpress Reporter
18 July 2020 marked Mandela Day, an annual international day adopted by the United Nations. It is more than a celebration of Nelson Mandela's life and legacy, it is a global movement to take his life's work into a new era and change our world for the better. People from all walks of life commemorate Mandela Day by cleaning up the community, feeding the hungry and bringing smiles to children. This year we observed Mandela Day in the midst of a global pandemic.
The first Mandela Day was launched in New York on July 18, 2009, but the UN's resolution to declare the day occurred later that year. On November 10, 2009, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring July 18 as “Nelson Mandela International Day”. The overarching objective of Mandela Day is to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better, and in doing so build a global movement for good. Ultimately it seeks to empower communities

everywhere. Nelson Mandela Day not only celebrates Nelson Mandela's life, but it is also a global call to action for people to recognize their ability to have a positive effect on others around them. The day hopes to inspire people to embrace the values that Mandela shared. These values include democracy, freedom, equality, diversity, reconciliation, and respect. Mandela Day calls on us all, every day, to make the world a better place. Each year on 18 July we look back on what has been done, and
forward to what will be done. Mandela was imprisoned under white-minority apartheid rule from 1962 and 1990 before he led the African N a t i o n a l Congress party to victory in the first multi-race elections in 1994. He served one term as president before stepping down in 1999. Mandela, who died in 2013, remains a global icon
Good Samaritans beautify KwaDukuza
ETETE: Cebo Fakazi, Nduduzo Ngcobo and Sbu Gumede embarked on a campaign to donate food parcels to disadvantaged families in ward 7 Etete, KwaDukuza on Sunday 19 July 2020.
Following in Nelson Mandela's footsteps to better the lives of vulnerable families, good Samaritans from KwaDukuza took time out of their busy schedules to bring relief by donating food parcels to five less fortunate families from Ward 7 in Etete, KwaDukuza on Sunday 19 July 2020. According to Nduduzo Ngcobo, one of the drivers of this great initiative, the main purpose is to give dignity and feed families that have been badly affected by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. “In celebrating Mandela day, we visited 5 of 15 families that we identified to have been badly affected by Covid-19. We gave them
food parcels and blankets. We are hoping that the 10 remaining will be visited this coming weekend - following the notion that everyday should be treated as Mandela Day,” said Ngcobo. Ngcobo further stated that their campaign is not politically affiliated and pleaded with anyone who can afford to donate and help eliminate hunger especially during these difficult times. “We shall assist needy families for as long as we can. We are thankful to everyone who made this campaign a huge success,” added Ngcobo Beneficiary families said they were thankful for the assistance.

wickets at an average of 21.33 with an economy rate of 2.12 including eight five-wicket hauls and two 10-wicket hauls. The left-arm spinner only had one opportunity on the international stage when he played for a SA Invitation XI against the International Wanderers at Kingsmead in 1976. At the age of 29 he was in his prime and took a matchwinning 6/66 in the second innings, his victims including international captains, Greg Chappell of Australia and Mike Denness of England. It was a clear indication of what he could have achieved on grounds around the world at the highest level had he been given the opportunity. He was a master of flight and spin and had a good arm ball to back it up. their Test match against South Africa in 1970. He persuaded the Australians to let him bowl to them and made an immediate impression, bowling experienced Test batsman Ian Redpath and impressing the likes of Ian Chappell and Ashley Mallett, the latter being Australia's leading spinner of the 1970s. He had one season for Radcliffe in the Lancashire Central League when he took 62 wickets at 14.62 apiece. Baboo finally got his chance to represent his country in Masters events in one of which he dismissed both Viv Richards and Gordon Greenidge. “Baboo Ebrahim was one of the countless number of outstanding cricketers who was denied the opportunity to display his talents to the world and live his cricketing dreams,” said CSA Acting Chief Executive, Dr. Jacques Faul.

Former Natal cricket legend and Delta Premier League Cricket Club mentor, bowling coach and founder, Baboo Ebrahim, succumbed to the coronavirus at age 73. Uncle Baboo had been in ICU for nearly a month after contracting Covid 19 and died last Friday night just before midnight. His death has sent shockwaves through cricket circles in KwaZulu-Natal and more especially his Delta Cricket Club (DCC) family of young and upcoming stars. Known for his humor, intelligent game play and love for the game, he was fondly called “Uncle Baboo” in the team and beyond. Baboo was one of the outstanding South African spin bowlers of the 1960s and 1970s who would undoubtedly have played as many Test matches for his country as the 48 first-class games to which he was limited. In those matches he took 179
